More Entries On a Page
This is probably very basic but how do I enable my blog to show more entries on the first page? It's only showing a couple of days worth of entries now.
Thanks!

Ms DeAnna:
In your [Weblog Config] on the left column, go to "Preferences", second box down says: Number of days displayed: (?). The MT default is 7 days. That means 7 calendar days. See if changing this number fixes your problem.
I'll do a prevent blank blog MuNuby Help post tomorrow and tell you how to keep your front page filled with most recent posts.

Under the default MT setup, if you don't post for 7 days, your blog will be blank. This appears to be the problem at your site right now. Increase the number of days in the weblog config to show more days. Be looking for my post tomorrow or late tonight.

Madfish Willie, you rock. Changing the web config thingy worked. I thought changing that would only change the "recent entries" on the side bar but this worked too!
Thanks so much!

MuNuby Help - CSS Previews
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a thingy or doodad that we could use to preview our site tweaks before implementing them? Right now we make a little change, save the file, rebuild the index, view the page... and over... and over... and over...
Well, wish no more! I've found a couple of neat little utilities that will let you preview your changes in real time without making permnent changes in your stylesheet.
Both of these utilities are from
slayeroffice.
This first one is called
CSS Preview. A text area and a div - enter your CSS, hit the preview button and see what it will look like.
The second one is called
Style Sheet Tweak Favelet. It will let you take the current page, select a div from a drop-down menu, make a change, and preview the page in your browser. It only changes the display, not the actual stylesheet, so you would have to copy / paste your values into your stylesheet for the effects to be permanent.
I haven't tried them out yet, but they look interesting.

MadFish:
A vastly superior method is available as an extension for Mozilla/FireFox. It's called EditCSS and it loads a page's entire stylesheet into the browser's sidebar. You can then make changes to the stylesheet elements and see the results in real time on the page. It also only makes changes to what you see in your browser. To make permanent, you just cut & paste the newly adjusted stylesheet into your templates.
Oh, and it's an absolute riot to paste other people's stylesheets into your own blog and view the results
This extension alone makes it worth having a Mozilla-based browser on your machine, and it is indispensable for both designers and those just wanting to learn to do some minor CSS tweaking on their own blog.

Is there a trick to installing the EditCSS program or am I just a retard? I installed it both ways, installed the J??lib, restarted my browser. Now when I right click a page, "EditCSS" shows as an option but when I click it, nothing happens. Did I do something wrong?

Well, it turns out there is some king of bug in XP. So I followed a link over to Edit Styles and bookmarked it. That works like a champ... and it lets you move the edit window around so the banner area is not covered.
Thanks for the link!!

The Snooze is open. REAL open.
I'm in class today and tomorrow. I'll be wandering by the computer through the day but definitely won't have time to work up any decent posts. Instead of having a Crappy Post Day two weeks in a row I figured I'd ape some of the more successful bloggers and have an open microphone day.
There are only a couple of rules that you need to follow:
- Make sure to use a title on the post and put your name in parenthesis at the end. Example: What I learned in class today (Jim Peacock)
- Use the "SnoozeBob" category. That's going to be the general category for guest posters. Nothing like simple and easy to understand category titles to help folks navigate the site, eh?
- Don't do anything that will get your ass permanently banned. There are no hard and fast rules for this because a goodly portion of my readership are clever and evil and if I made up rules or guidelines they would take a savage delight in finding loopholes through them. Just don't do anything remarkably and intentionally stupid or malicious and you'll be just fine.
Here's the particulars:
Login URL
Account: SnoozeBob
Password: password
All y'all that already have accounts that can post here, feel free to use them or post using the SnoozeBob account. It's all good.
BEGIN!
PS - In case you've forgotten what he looks like,
here's Snoozebob!
PSS - Munuvians will need to log out as themselves in order to login as SnoozeBob. It's that "logout" button at the top of the MT interface.

MY BLOG! MY CRAPPY CRAPPY BLOG!!!
Where is it?! I thought the Munu server might be down so I came here and here it is. I clicked to a few other blogs on the blogroll and they work fine. But where is Blather Review?! Gone?! N-n-n-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!!!!!!!!!
UPDATE: Well, this is int'resting. When I accessed with IE it came up right away. But whenever I try to get to it in Mozilla I get the message:
The file / cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.
And this is not only from my browser's dropdown quicky-clicky thingy, but from all permalinks on other blogs!
Anyone out there with Mozilla? Click on the Blather Review link in the sidebar (3rd or 4th from the top) ------->
Can you get there from here? This is weird....
UPDATE II: Hmmm. I can't get in with http://blatherreview.mu.nu, but I
can with http://br.mu.nu! wtf...?

To bump a post - post it as normal and then, once it's posted, edit the posted date at the bottom of the post edit screen. You can set it minutes, hours or days in the future and it will stay at the top until you post something which has a later date ... easy

Need Help With Commenting & Archiving & Search
Three questions, if anyone can help:
My comments work, but the presentation is pretty lame. How do I change the style of presentation?
I'm not sure if my archives really work. When I go to my archives, I get a Parent Directory listing of my posts, but not even by title, just by a number (followed by .php). Is this normal?
When I click on actual archived posts, the presentation is all screwey. I'd like the archived post-displays to look just like my site. Do I just cut and paste my Main Index template into my Main Archive template? Or what? I have no idea.
Finally, I'm not sure if my search function works. Does search scan the entire mu.nu site for hits? If so, then I guess my search actually is working just fine.
If anyone can help (Madfish Willie...! I'm looking right at you), thanks!

If you just bring up your /archives directory, you will indeed get a list of files ending with .php. You need to produce links to your archives from your main page.
Your individual entries use the individual entry template. You can't just paste your main index template over it, though - that won't work. You'll need to be selective.
And yeah, your search is broken.
I'm at work right now, so I don't have time to explore further.

Ace:
I'll fix your archives for you. You'll have to give me access to your site. At your main screen, on the right side, is a list of actions. Select add new author. From the drop down list, select Madfish Willie 2. At the bottom/middle of the next screen give me access to your site. In the next screen check all the boxes so I can do what I need to do for you. then drop ma an e-mail letting me know what you want done. It may not be till tomorrow night before I can get to it. I have a big commercial pool cadd design and presentation to complete on short deadline. After that it won't take long to get your stuff done.

Search
This might shock some of you, but I did something stupid. A while back I deleted the search function from my template in a fit of spring cleaning gone mad. Now I'd like it back. Any ideas on how to do that, oh wonderous people who know these things? Best would be a cut and paste code to drop in the template - you know, keeping it simple (and real).

Yeah, I'd like to know too. I did something I thought was clever -- I just cut and paste the search-code from Blog Slovo's site.

But I can't search my own, alas.

you need to pass the correct blog ID into the hidden filed on the search form.
You should be able to get MT to return this by using the <$MTBlogID$> tag or you can read it off your URL when you login to edit your blog ... it's in there somewhere.
then you should be able to use the search code from the default MT template (I would post it but it's changed in Version 3)

Programming Question
Okay all you brilliant Munuvian coders - I have one for you. For a different page for use in my group website, I'd like to have an HTML page that will list (and make available for download) all of the files in a particular public HTML file. It doesn't have to look all fancy - just like this - and I don't have access to any MySQL tables or changing options on the web server because GaTech won't give me access or anything like that. It'd be nice if it was just a nice quick javascript or php or something like that, but I have a sinking feeling that it isn't.

The blue page bg is 11k and loads 1 time, the light blue sidebar bg is 2.76k and loads 1 time, the sidetitle bg is 2.14 k and loads 1 time... I don't think that is what slows the load times... the banner images are pretty big (238k) so that will slow it down - need to make them transparent gifs?... and I still have the sidebar images on the radio server, so that may slow the load times down too. And I probably will have to resize the original sidebar images instead of doing it with HTML tag attributes... the ecoystem and sitemeter scripts are on the bottom of the right column and load last... there is another script on the left... the sidebars are module includes... what else is going to slow it down?... the comment show/hide script - page isn't big enough to slow it down... the trackback show/hide script - ditto...
Anyway, I'm still working on it... How is the load time on my site?

Does anyone - if anybody actually goes over there - have load time problems with my site on dial up? If not, the problem is the banner image size and the images still hosted on the radio serever.

I try to keep any graphics like my banners and such to

You can get the banner down to under 20kb if you split it up into 2 images (left and right), crop it and make sure you aren't resizing in browser.
Positioning the bits will be 'fun' but not impossible. Oh and you can shave another 3kb off that by using normal text for the "A Celebration of things ..." sentance.
Other observations. Your alpha doesn't work in Mozilla but it can do - you just need to hide the mozilla alpha style from IE. I think ALA had a tutorial on this.
Becuase of the alpha in IE the BG to the banner looks a bit funny.
The alpha doesn't carry across to the indi archives
Everything else seems to be ok (although personal preference that BG is just nasty but for some reason i can see Harvey being very happy there

Debbye: The banner should change, although sometimes the random nuymber selecting the banner will come up the same several times. There are eight different banners in the rotation you can look at.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback! I'll discuss your various solution with my graphics artist and get this thing loading faster for everyone. I think that after I move all the images to MuNu, the load times will improve a lot.
Rob re: Text Bug in IE
In my site: Ii've been using Mozilla 1.6 for viewing and quit using IE. After I did the AdAware thingy, I loaded back up and viewed my new design. I noticed that the sidetitles and date and post title text is very small in IE compared to the size in Mozilla. I know there are differences in how the two browsers render the box model, but have never heard anything about rendering text differently. The font is a fairly common script style font. It rendered smaller initially in Mozilla, so I jacked up the sizes bit so it would look right with the other text.
Here is the problem. When I try to manipulate the text sizes for IE it doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried using %, assigning a PT size, assigning a PX size, assigning the +/- attributes to change sizes, and tried x-large/xx-large etc and nothing seems to change the text size in IE.
In the MabLab site, the post text (100%) is rendering smaller (than the posted by line text (80%)? Whassup wid dat? What would cause that? In doing a test design, sometimes I make a change, insert the new code after the original code so that is the instruction the should be rendered, and comment out the original code. If I don't like the change, I can delete it and use the original again.
Anyway... thanks for any help you can give me on this particular issue, cause it's freakin me out!!!

Harvey's always up for a good...pokin'!
Hmmm...filing that away for later use.
Anyway, the only thing I see wrong is the size of the calendar. If you use less padding, it should work fine!
I also agree with the site being very busy. It's not so much a load time thing for me (I'm on cable server), but an esthetic thing. But, each person has their individual style, and I think this style fits the type of blog. Very nice work!

Mr Rob: It looks like my text sizing problem is related to my screen resolution. I'm on a crappy monitor at 1024x768 / 256 colors and everything looks fine as far as text sizing. But I still haven't be able to effect any noticable changes at 1280x1024... weird stuff maynard.

Erm, I've whisked through the code and the CSS and can see no obivious problems. I also am unable to recreate the problem on either my home or my work PC at any resolution... Very, very confusing. You're definitely running IE 6.0.2?
I'll keep looking but can't see anything wrong with the CSS.

I think has something to do with my video driver on this Dell laptop. I don;t seem to have the problem anywhere else. I'll just have to live with it I guess.
Thanks for taking your valuable time to look at my spaghetti code... I made my last set of changes and haven't made a backup copy and cleaned up yet. I'll do that soon and use the old CSS as a skin.
Thanks again for you assistance.

Riddle me this . . .
or what I know about software development would fit between these brackets [ ].
OK, just asking here, but what is
pyblosxom? I figured some of you might have some handle if this is something new or what? I found it by tracking a Google search
that hit my site that was done on the words "just had" to
this site after reading the following excerpt
on Google:
blog :: tech :: pyblosxom_upgrade.txt Sun, 04 Apr 2004 15:19 Just had fun Just
had fun with a rather obstreperous upgrade from PyBlosxom 0.8 to 0.9.

Pyblosxom is a weblog engine that uses standard text files located on your filesystem as a database of weblog entries. The concept is simple, managing content is as easy as editing a text file with your favourite text editor.

I Don't Know if I'm Allowed to/Supposed to Ask Questions Here...
...but it looks like that's what people are doing.
The web-design for my current page is GunSmoke by Maystar designs. She has a Moveable Type version, but when I cut and paste it into my CSS Stylesheet box, it just doesn't work at all. There's no sidebar, the whole screen is used for the content-area, and the huge banner-title font is used instead as the title for individual postings.
My question is sort of vague, because I don't know enough to sharpen it. I'm not asking anyone to look at this code and check for errors (it's possible the thing is just badly written), but is there something simple and basic I'm missing? Am I wrong for assuming I can just cut and paste the template into my Stylesheet box?

I took a look, and yeah, the way that style is set up it won't work as a Stylesheet.
The style is embedded right into the template, so you'd need to paste it into your Main Index template instead... Of course, then you would lose your changes. I can try editing the Stylesheet for you if you'd like.

No, you don't have to make changes, if what you mean by "changes" are just putting my dumb links and pictures and stuff in. I can figure all that out easily enough.
I just figured out, two minutes ago, that the thing was supposed to go into the Main Index Archive box, not the Stylesheet box.
I just want to know-- am I losing something or doing something wrong by not having anything in the Stylesheet box? The site seems to be working, but it seems like if there's a box, there should be stuff inside of it.
And I guess that rather than a "modular" design this means I'm going to have to make all changes to the Main Index, right?

Thanks for offering to do the changes, though.
I'm just worried that this isn't the right way to use Moveable Type, and that I'm screwing up royally by sticking this in the Main Index Archive.

See, I knew I was missing out on something.
Now I don't have that cool automatic commenting & trackback feature.
I think I'll be able to figure out where that code should go, though.

Yes, you need to add this to the main index, not the style sheet. How do I know this, becuase I, too, am using Gunsmoke by Maystar. You will need to do a lot of cutting and pasting to get that blogskin, or any other, to have all of the features found in the default blog. Good luck

Dave,
Cool. How did you expand the margins? Looks like you're page is bigger than mine.
And I've got a problem with the link color. My links are supposed to be red, like yours are, and then turn grey when used. But mine all seem to be gray to start with.
Did you have that problem?

I didn't touch the margins, but I did redo the colors. Look at the top of the skin, you'll see settings for the colors. You can change this. Can someone provide a link for color coees?

Lovely Wife was infested with that once. It's a helper spyware thing that adds reference hyperlinks all over the place. Are they backlighted in yellow and have a wavy underline? Hers did - to differentiate them from real hyperlinks. Go for Adaware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy and you can get rid of it.

Its a very nifty* piece of spam that highlights keywords in web documents and makes them hyperlinks to commercial sites. AdAware should get it but you can also check your add remove programs list in control panel to see if you can nuke it that way.
*nifty in that it installs silently and is a pig to get rid of! As spam machines go that's about as good as you get

I think it attacks your browser rather than your ISP program or hard drive. I wrote a post about a week agao where "ad hominem" was underlined and highlighted as a link to an on-line dictionary. I'll presume that no one else can see it as a link because it only shows up as such when I look at my site in IE. When I'm on in Mozilla it doesn't show as a link.

Hatred
I made the super mistake of trying to find a haircut online. Somehow, now all of my Internet visits bring me a mass of pop-up ads asking if I want to remortgage my house, date a Russian mail order bride, or buy coffee.
None of which I want to do.
Is there a program I can download to stop this agony?
Thanks!

Ad-aware is one of them. It's free. There's another one too, but I can't remember the name right now.
Check with Stevie at CaughtintheXfire. She's gotten familiar with that software because something similar happened to her.

I am more interested in whether you found a way to get a haircut over the internet. I really do hate making that 10 minute trip to the barbershop, sitting for 30 minutes awaiting my turn and then finding the whole actual cutting procedure took less than 3 minutes.

AdAware is great.
The program that will prevent this sort of thing happening, though, is Mozilla.

In case anyone is interested -- because I don't LIKE Firefox (it doesn't render some of my favorite websites correctly) I use this program, in addition to AdAware Plus and Spybot Search & Destroy (free):
Spyware Guard.
