Can This Be Done???
I was curious if there were such things as Subdomains within the greatness that is Munuviana.
I had wanted to build a little blog for the nine yr old as a means for her to improve her writing skills during what is left of the summer, and M-blog just isn't as friendly as I'd like it to be. I would have so much more parental control if I could set her up as a little corner of my own world. And with the nonsense you see on the web and in the non-virtual world today, that's something I have to take pretty seriously.
Shoot, I even have a
banner all built for her.
Is this even possible?

Mama: Nice banner work! Yes, it is possible to set up a sub-site in MT... you can also set up a site via the cPanel, but it's not MT blogware...
Pixy: If you don't mind, I can set her up a sub-site like a testlab... just let me know if it's OK... I'll coordinate everything with Mama.... site paths, site name, add author and all that neat stuff...

That is just lovely, MadfishWillie! And I was just thinking about the Great Munuvian HonorRoll... I think perhaps placing it on her site but not adding her to it would be the best solution. That was all the traffic is one way-out instead of any coming in. Safer for a 9yr old that way.
I want her to stay an "Insignficant Microbe" with 0 Links from 0 Sources until she's 18 and enlisted in the Marines, if at all possible.
Oh, and she's already posted and loves it. Looks like it will be easy for her to use.
Thanks again, Pixy, MadfishWillie, et al.

Already Needing Help!
Hello,
I need help from someone a little more knowledgable on importing files to Movable Type from a previous Movable Type blog. I exported the file, saved it as a text file and uploaded it to a directory called import. Went to import in MT and all I get is this:
Importing entries into blog 'Patriot Paradox'
Importing entries as author 'Nick Queen'
All data imported successfully! Make sure that you remove
the files that you imported from the 'import' folder, so that
if/when you run the import process again, those files will not
be re-imported.
Is it just me?

Heh.
Because it's a shared installation, we only have one import folder. And only I have access to that folder, to preven accidents.
Since you're already on MT, your export file should work without problems. Just email it to me, I'll put it in the folder, you can import it, and everyone will be happy!

Is This Thing On?
Fellow Munuvians, I posted this over at Ellis Island a couple of days ago - traffic there has been slow, I guess. I'll repost here.
Hello All,
I just wanted to offer a site for absorption! It's my friend, Howard, from 3 Legged Dog. You can find him
here . He's a good friend of mine, and I think he would make an excellent addition to the mu nu family. He is helpful, warm, caring, and easy to get along with. He would also give you the shirt off his back. AND! AND! He has a damn good sense of humor. I think this is a great quality - there can never be too much of it. Please, check him out and let me know, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT, if he could be part of this, too! And I promise not to squeeze any more commas into one sentence. Spank you veddy much.
Thanks for your time! Have a great day/evening!

I'm here...sort of
Let the trumpets ring, Rusty Shackleford has joined the ranks of the great and has made the mu.nu move!!!! Sort of. Thanks to all who helped make the move possible and to Pixy for getting things set up.
Unfortunately Blogger has made a few changes since the
IMPORTING YOUR ENTRIES manual was written. This means complete 'tards like me are having a difficult time making the ol' switcheroonie.
1) The dark forces over at that
unnamed wholly owned subsidiary of Google no longer specify the path to your Blog Filename, so I'm not sure how to save that for later importation into MT. Also, what should said file be saved as? (text?)
2) To where should I FTP said file once I have it saved? Is there a way to create subdirectories myself? Is there some administrative access that I'm not sure how to get at?
I appreciate any help y'all can give.

Mr Rusty:
First... Welcome to MuNu!! Yay!!1!
I did a search on the MT Support Forum and came up with this thread. Following the regular MT instructions and use this new format. Also, it seems you MUST delete the <br> tags after exporting, and convert the single digit date formats into double digits... should be simple using search & replace. From there, I believe Pixy has to set something on the server so you can import your files into the proper folder.
Second... In the sidebar, there are several posts under Helpful Thingies that should answer a lot of questions. Remember... there are no stupid questions... just stupid people who ask questions.
PS What is your URL? I'll add it to our different MuNu blogroll scripts as soon as I know what it is.

D'oh! I already have you listed... my bad.

Willie,
Thanks for the help!
I'm not having a problem with the dates, that's taken care of already. What I'm not sure of is this:
In the instructions for moving to MT from Blogger this appears:
"Switch back to the Posts screen, and Publish your weblog. You will end up with a single file with all of your posts, formatted using the above template, at the location specified in your Settings. Download this file to your local hard drive."
I'm not sure what file it is I'm supposed to be downloading to my hard drive. Do I just open my old blog up in Explorer/Netscape and then save the webpage as a file?
The next problem is this: "Connect to your FTP server; then open the directory where you installed Movable Type." I assume the FTP server is mu.nu, and that this refers to going to the Main MT page when we login. I ASSUME.
"Create a new directory called import, then open that directory." How do I do this?
"Upload the file containing all of your entries into the import directory." This, I think I can handle. Just not sure where to upload the file to, and, as mentioned above, what the file should be and in what format it should be saved in.
Anyone have any idears?
Posted by: Rusty Shackleford @ at July 02, 2004 04:20 PM
4
The file you download should be a txt file, if I remember correctly.
After that, contact Pixy, he has to set soemthing up on the server so your posts are imported into your new site and not someone else's site. He'll give you instructions on how to proceed when he get's it set up.

Remember Personal Info?
Alright. I'm a bit confused about this. When I first came to mu.nu, my information would never be saved on the pop up version of comments, despite the fact that I checked the little box. At some point, it started doing it, and I wish to God I had remembered what I did for that to happen. Why? Well, because I recently did some computer maintenance, like deleting my cache and cookies, defrag, etc., and now it doesn't remember my info again. Can anyone tell me what I should do that it works again?
Oh, oddly, it works with other blogs, but every mu.nu site that has comments pop-up...NO DICE. Weird.
Help. I'm lazy and hate entering my info every time I want to post a comment.

If that doesn't work, add me as an author, give me full permissions, drop me an e-mail, and I'll take a look at your index file... or you could just e-mail me your index file and I'll look at it that way.

Um, what? Help requested.
I logged into my blog this evening and every post except the most recent has become center justified. At least, it appears that way on my computer. Does anyone else see that behavior on their computer? If so, any ideas on how to change it back? Some of the posts display poorly now and I'd like to fix them. However, since I haven't made any changes to my templates in a long time, I cannot fathom what the problem could be. Any suggestions? Bueller? Thanks in advance.

I have the same quiz posted on my blog, and had no such problem with it... the only different I can see is that after I posted the cut-and-paste results, I put a /font (with appropriate pointy bits before and after). I don't know if this will make a difference for you....
Madfish would know, I betcha.

Geek:
It looks like the quiz code has some <div align=center> tags open... try putting in a </div> tag after each of the top three quizes... see if that works... all the rest of the tags appear to be closed... if it doesn't work, e-mail back and I'll check it again.

It's definately the quiz. I had the same problem and had to change some of the HTML to get it to display properly.

You folks are the best. Thanks for the help. Maybe I need to wade through the HTML after a good night's sleep. Anyway, thanks again.

Thingys & Doodads - Rotating Banners
This edition of Thingys & Doodads will outline the procedures used to install rotating banner images on your website.
I can't tell you if other people notice things like new banners when they log on to a site, but I do. I see that
Rocket Ted keeps fresh banners on a regular basis.
Jennifer is always tweaking around with her banners and site design.
Linda has displayed three or four really nice banners until she settled on her current one. This script will select a random image from a list and load that image when the page is loaded or refreshed. I use 3 images on
my site. I set up
Harvey's site with 8 or 10 banners (if I remember correctly). I set up
Sir John of Argghhh!!! with 6 banners.
Pam did all the banners for Harvey, John and me (if you want some nice new banners, she can come up with something real good for you).
There are several ways to set this up... you can just put them in your templates, you can put them in a template module and use an MTinclude statements in your templates, you can set up text files and use php includes in your templates... the last method is the best way to keep your rebuild times fast. For the purposed of this tutorial, I'll use the method for MTincludes.
Scripts and instructions are listed out in the extended entry...

This is cool. I'm just starting to get into PHP for work.

To make the scripts work with php, put the scripts in a text file - for this purpsoe we'll use .inc for an extension.
Then, use php includes in place of the MTIncludes like this: <?php include('/path/to/filename.inc'); ?>.
Using php will make all your rebuilds much faster than using the MTIncludes. I illustrated the MTIncludes so that everyone could use them and not just the php enabled sites.

Just to be picky ... it might ben worth your icluding a noscript tag with a default banner for those of us browsing on non or low JavaScript enabled clients

Per Rob's request...
Insert the following code in the body section code after the </a> and before the </div>:
<noscript>
<h1>
<a href="http://YOURSITENAME.mu.nu/" accesskey="1">
<___ src="http://YOURSITENAME.mu.nu/path/to/FileName.jpg" border="0">
</a>
</h1>
</noscript>
Change YOURSITENAME.mu.nu to your site's URL;
change /path/to/ to your particular path;
change ImageName.jpg to your image's filename.ext;
modify/delete the width, height, border attributes as required;
add alt and title attributes as preferred.
[Thanks, Mr Rob!!]

I know, I know . . .
I only come around when I want to pick everyone's brains. But did we resolve the question of how to get one's blog to retain information on commenters? The worst thing is, my own blog doesn't recognize me?--how embarrassing is that? I have to re-enter my own information each time I go there. If this is happening to my "guests," so much the worse.
Let me know, O my faithful friends.

Always, or only sometimes.
It happens to me - sometimes - and not just here at MuNu. So I'm a bit confuzzled.
