I hate Bob
I don't even know Bob but I hate bob. I have a feeling I am not alone in hating bob. I know at least one other blogger who hates bob as well. Bob is lucky I don't know him or I might make the papers for wacking him upside the head with a 2x4. In any case, I have deleted his posts, banned his ip addy etc etc, and he keeps coming back.
Short of hiring a hit man how can I can I make sure this guy never shows up on my blog again.
I know it has something to do with blacklist, but I don't want to go messing there, or people will be wanting to hit me upside the head with a 2x4.

Rachel: Try this link and this link for information on how to work blacklist
FYI: You can use the search thingy over in the sidebar to search across all the MuNu blogs for answers to questions such as these. Most of your answers will be under MuNuviana, but the blogs themselves will sometimes have good technical information.

Rachel Ann, if there's a determined human out to f*ck with you, there's almost nothing that automated technology can do to stop them, unfortunately.
Blacklist needs something that is completely consistent from one crap comment to the next, in order to function as either a pre-emptive blocker, or an after-the-fact removal tool. Also, that element common to all crap comments must be very unlikely to occur in a real comment, or real comments will get clobbered as well. (Things like names, or common phrases used are risky.)
If you can post or point us to examples of some of the crap, we be able to help find a way to protect you. In particular, depending on the content of the messages, ISP's can sometimes be involved to shut them down.
Let's at least take a shot at him.

Hi Madfish, and thank you. I've done the blacklist thing as far as I'm able. I didn't want to add urls and such to the list because I don't want to create a problem with blacklist.
Paul, this guy changes his ip frequently. I have him banned several times in my list. I then erase the comment. I can't get into my g-mail now, to give the last comment (I've spam banned him there too!) but when I can I'll post the comment and all other info later.
He generally goes into the old stuff, so I'm slowly closing comments on all posts older than a month. Is there a way to do this quickly? Helen, I know you mentioned something about it.
His spam goes from the just annoying to yuck; he usually doesn't make more than one or two comments a day but they add up and I'm tired of him.

A Munuvian (Me) in the News!
On Tuesday I was interviewed about liveblogging by James Hebert who writes for the San Diego Union-Tribune. This morning the article is up, and Mr. Hebert has done a great job with the subject:
Sometimes serious and substantive, sometimes as snarky as the hecklers in a ballpark's bleachers, the liveblog is an offshoot of blogging (or Internet journaling) that harnesses the instantaneity of the Internet to offer real-time commentary on live events.
Whatever else they are, on Wednesday night the liveblogs were almost invariably more entertaining than the actual event – and they often served as a satisfying stand-in for debate viewers' own frustrations.
Go by and read the story!

Simple question...please don't laugh at me
How do I REM out some lines in my main template? I expect I'll have to take out my Hockey Whoopass Jamboree every now and then, and it would be so much easier to just REM out the line with my logo when I need to.

Help Moving Archived Entries?
Hey, does anyone know a quick 'n easy way to move a bunch of old entries from one blog to another? I ask because Loren is all set up at his page, and I want to move the entries he posted at Civi-Calls to his new place.
Many thanks, all in advance.

I'm not an archive moving expert, but the process moves the entire archive... what you want to do is select certain records (posts) to move... I'm thinking that the fastest way to do this would be to copy & paste from one blog into the other blog... You might check in over at the MT Support Forum and do a search - maybe someone has asked the question already.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at October 12, 2004 05:41 PM
2
Just read through the instructions on the MT Editing Menu> Import & Export Entries... it looks like you can put all Loren's posts into one category... then, export your blog.... then, import into Loren's blog using only his category... I think this will work... maybe you should wait for confirmation from Pixy or someone else?
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at October 12, 2004 05:49 PM
3
D'oh! I misread those instructions... it imports the entries into the selected category in the importing blog... I'm sure there are database c: prompt commands that would do the trick, but that's Pixy's Paradise to play in...
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at October 12, 2004 05:54 PM

Well, I have put all his old posts into one category: "By Loren Bliss" . Hopefully we can 'port them all over to Loren's blog en masse. Maybe I'm just not looking at the right places in the manual...
But this looks hopeful. Thanks, Barkeep.

Answer from the support forum:
Your best bet is probably to export all the entries, reimport them in to this new blog and then go to the entries list. First, list all entries on the page. Then you can filter the list by the rest of your authors. When you've filtered by one author, select all posts and delete. Do this for all authors except the new blog owner.
Posted by: Madfish Willie @ at October 13, 2004 12:02 AM

I'll try doing an export and see if I can filter out Loren's posts automatically somehow.

New Latest Visitors
I love the new Latest Visitors! Now, if there were only some way to correlate it with awstats - the problem being that awstats lists only the host name, and Latest Visitors lists only the IP. (Okay, I can get the host name from the IP myself, but it would be nice if Latest Visitors would do it for me... also, some hosts have multiple IPs, but you can tell from their names that they are logically the same.)

It has come to my attention that a number of people (ok 2) who wanted to join the debate chat fun on Friday were unable to get there or had some difficulty. Many school districts also pay the differential between military pay and their regular teacher pay (http://www.nyu.edu/hr/policies/timeoff8.html)... I haven;t read of any other local/state/federal employers that pay a differential, but it might be a common practice.

Blacklist Glitch/Policy Question
Hi. There's a strange little situation occurring regarding the blacklist. A perfectly nice blogger is being harassed by a prolific stalker who leaves weird, inchoherent spam in his name at other websites.
Currently, we have him blacklisted because of the spam. But I'm not so sure this is fair, since it isn't really his fault someone's using his name.
There's no ideal solution, though: if we take him off the blacklist we may have to potentially deal with spam from the stalker in the future.
Perhaps people could leave their input, and Pixy could then make a final determination?
If it's decided that we want to remove him from the blacklist, I'll review the blacklist procedures carefully and do the actual work. (I haven't worked with Blacklist before, but I may as well learn.)
Let me know. Thanks!

Hmmm, that's a dilly of a pickle.
Why can't the ISP be blacklisted instead of the URL?
If the spammer is using different ISPs each time then perhaps the only solution is for the perfectly nice blogger to change his URL.
Man, that's gotta suck.

I'm the perfectly nice blogger (and thanks for the kind description). My stalker has been following me around the net since even before I had a blog (we used to comment on the same forum). It's probably been almost a year and it has posted hundreds (more?) times on about a hundred blogs and forums as me. Either it posts incoherent crap or nasty, hateful stuff (it mocked a woman who lost her brother (a firefighter) on 9-11 because she posted on my blog and I posted on hers; it posted, as me, that my father was dead ... sweet stuff like that). It has also posted as numerous other bloggers and blog posters (maybe 8 or so that I can think of) but mainly, it pretends to be me. In the last hour or so, it's left two nasty messages on my blog (I just delete them now). The message that Attila got has been posted by the stalker on, literally, dozens of blogs. Anyway, let's see if I can help. The ISP that the stalker uses is AOL. It has a dynamic IP that always starts with the following three numbers:
64.12.116.???
205.188.116.???
152.163.10?.???
It posts using IE Explorer 6.0; WinME, 800x600 resolution, 16 color system. That's fairly unique. That's what I know. I hope that it helps. I appreciate Attila taking the time to bring this to your attention and you looking into this. I don't want or expect you to go to too much trouble over this but if there's an easy way for you to fix the blacklist, I'd certainly appreciate it.
Thanks again.

Ugh. AOL is a problem, because they have dynamically assigned transparent proxies. That means that if we block those IP ranges, we would be blocking millions of other AOL users too.
Let me have a think...

What the hell is wrong with my site? After the trackback is a little period-and if you click on it, it OPENS MY MT SITE to let people edit it! Is this normal?

Looks like someone added a backdoor for system maintenance, then forgot to take it out. I'd guess it's your template designer.
I clicked it and got to the login page, but it told me I wasn't allowed to edit your site.

Ted's right. Just go into your main index and look at the source to find it and just delete and rebuild. If you are scared to do so I'll help if you want, or maybe even just paste or email the source to me and I'll fix it and you can cut and paste it and rebuild. My email is patriot @ patriot-paradox.com (remove spaces!)

Just to reiterate what Ted said. The only reason YOU see the full editing screen is because you have your machine set to remember your login for that page. The rest of us just get a login page requesting username & password. What a scare though!
BTW, did you get your 'random reboot' situation resolved? If not, drop me an email.

It's intentional design. You've still got the same security in force. This just makes it easier for you to edit things if you see that there's a typo/update/problem/whatever.

VP Chat Party
Assuming, and rightly so, that I would be late in posting an invite to meet in the MuNu chat for the next presidential debate, Tuning Spork has sent the invitation for me. Thanks.
But if you can't make it to the big show on Friday night, be sure to stop in and join the fun during the VP debate Tuesday night 9:00 EDT.
Pajamas are optional - spelling doesn't count.

I really want to chat, but my TV and computer are not in the same room--but if you hang around afterward I may pop in to join you, especially if Cheney gets Edwards in a headlock and pounds his head on the podium! Oh, sorry--I was channeling Frank J there for a minute....

A standing ovation for Pixy please.
Hey folks;
I think something's gotten a little lost in all the recent discussions about traffic, bandwidth eekage and moving to a bigger server etc.
And that is the fact that, due to Pixy's skills, care and foresight in setting up and managing MuNu, we got through September's monster traffic assault
without a single service outtage or crashed blog.
Think about that for a minute. There are many, many individual blogs that have been brought screaming to their knees under that kind of an unprecedented barrage (known as the Slashdot effect). MuNu has
over 100 blogs on a single installation of MT, 4 or 5 of which saw massive surges in traffic, and the rest of us didn't even hear a burp.
Pardon me, but
FUCKING IMPRESSIVE.
I gotta doff my keyboard to ya Pixy. You've done one hell of a job.
Let's hear it for the Maestro huh?

I would love to but unfortunately that's 2am GMT which makes it 3am BST ... I'm not sure I'd be in a fit state to debate anything at that time in the morning!!!
