I'm having a problem with comments similar to the one that Harvey reported the day before yesterday. Mine says this:

Comment proglem in Munuviana posts
I attempted to post a comment in the Minx Comments post. However, I seem to be MT Blacklisted. I'll post my question below, but any help with the other problem would be appreciated.
Umm, huh? Do I change my Main Index or the Master Archive Index? And I save them as a different name? My current file names are index.html and archive.html. I do NOT see an index.php.
Ehh, I created a brand spanking new template, file named page.entry containing the code above(CSS replaced with my own). Will that work?
Confused in Virginia.

Sorry, I got eaten by mice.
...
Looong story, but I'm supposed to be working on Minx more-or-less full-time as my primary job, but something came up and ate my brain for the past week or so.
I'll be finished with it in the next few hours (yay!) - at least for now (boo!) - and then I'll post some more detailed instructions on Minxification.

However, I seem to be MT Blacklisted.
Yeah. That would be because you broke the blacklist.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BLACKLIST AN URL CONTAINING SQUARE BRACKETS. THESE THINGS: [ ]. IF YOU DO SO, YOU WILL BREAK THE BLACKLIST FOR THE WHOLE OF MU.NU AND NO-ONE WILL BE ABLE TO COMMENT.

RSS Woes
Somebody broke our RSS feed. Personally, I blame the Llamas. Or the Joos. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Anyway, does any one know how to tweak an RSS feed so that:
a) it works
b) it's the full Monty (not just excerpts, but full)

Rusty, are you sure it's busted? Last one I have is the "Jawa Trilogy", which was supposedly posted at 1:04 AM on August 8th. So basically I'm getting future posts, before they're even a gleam in someone's eye. Spooky.
Now, if you could just start a thread on the current price of oil we could get a Morning Edition thing going. (I think that was the name of the TV series where the day's future events were predicted in a morning paper. Can't find a reference to it on Stupid Google, though. It's like anything that happened five years ago, didn't.)

CPanel Woes
It's not a big deal, but I finally got around to logging on to CPanel, and when I tried to use the File Manager I got the following error message:
[a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive]
And I also got the following message under my trashcan:
Unable to change directory to /kei/home/demphist/.trash! You do not seem to have access permissions! (System Error: Permission denied)
When Jim first set up my account he gave me a plethora of usernames and urls, all of which looked sort of similar to those I generally use, but with slight variations. He eventually set up my blog url to the right spelling, but left my CPanel login name as one of the variants. That's OK, and I'm used to using it now, but I wonder if these misspellings are at the root of the File Manager error problem, somehow?

File Manager?
I asked on the comments of a previous post, but where exactly is this "file manager" in the MT interface where I can view -- and manage -- my blog's files? Sorry if I seem obtuse but I really don't where this function is, but have seen others talk about using it.

Rhodey, it's not in your MT interface, it's in your CPanel. That's the interface for managing your actual hosting account.
You access it at http://colossus.mu.nu/cpanel and then find the icon for the file manager. Once you click that, an Explorer-like window opens showing you the file structure of your part of the server. By clicking on the folder icons (not the name, the actual little icon to the left of each name) and Up One Level link, you can move through your directories and files.
When you get to one you want to alter, then you click on the name, and a menu of things you can do to that file will appear in the upper right corner. Clicking on something from that list will then allow you to perform that action on the file you selected (e.g. delete the file).
Obviously, you need to be careful of the changes you make, as these are the actual files that make up your Movable Type data.
Note that the username and password may not be the same as the ones you use for MT. Pixy would have sent you the info in your original MuNu arrival email. Also note that some folks are currently having problems with the file manager in their CPanel, so you may get errors.

Deleted post still accessible?
At the request of the subject of one of our posts, we recently deleted a post from our blog database. But, while the post doesn't now appear in our Movable Type interface, nor in the monthly and category archives, it is still viewable by any sites that had directly linked to it, or by manually typing its direct URL.
The post in question is here: http://colossus.mu.nu/archives/186361.php
Is there a server cache that still may have the post in it or something? The person really wants this post deleted completely (and we don't have a problem doing so) so what needs to be done?
Thanks.

All versions of MT except the most recent (V3.3) have a horrific design flaw that SixApart insists isn't a bug, but also didn't do much to let their users know about.
Deleting a post from withing the MT interface DOES NOT DELETE THE POST FROM THE SERVER. So as in your case, anybody who knows the url, or has a link to it, can still get to it with no problem whatsoever.
Nice huh?
The only way to do what you need to do is to use the file manager in your cPanel account to go into your archives folder and find the file named 186361.php and delete it manually.

File Manager
OK, maybe I haven't been paying attention but when did File Manager under CPanel stop working? I noticed that my favicon.ico file is under angrygwn.mu.nu/archives instead of the root directory angrygwn.mu.nu, and figured I should make it available in the root since that is where convention says it should be. I got to file manager, and I get an error related to not having permissions. Weird.

Sudden Parse Error?
I keep getting this error, preventing my site from loading:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected '<' in /home/ace/public_html/skins/1/3c-body.php on line 46
I haven't changed the template. I was wondering if anyone else got it too, and how it should be fixed.
I checked that line of my template, and looked to make sure brackets occurred in pairs, but that's the limit of my source-warrior skills.
Seems okay to me.

Minx Comments - Everyone Wins Except The Spammers
Here's a quick rundown on how to create your own Minx-based comments pages.
First, you need to change your comments links from, well, whatever they are now, to:
<a href="http://minx.cc/?post=<$MTEntryID$>">Comments</a>
Or something similar. http://minx.cc?post=XXXXXX is a link that works for any given entry to bring up that entry and its comments.
Well, it shouldn't work on unpublished entries. Let me check that...
Hmm. Well, that's not quite right. You can't see the post, but it gives you a comment form. I'll fix that.
...
Done.
Anyway, the template looks like this:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html><head>
<title>[posts][post.title][/posts] </title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://minx.cc/css/minx.css" type="text/css" />
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://minx.cc/scripts/showhide.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
<div id="container">
<div id="center">
<div class="content">
[posts]<h1>[post.title]</h1><p>
[post.text]
<p>
[post.more]
<p class="posted">
Posted by: [post.authorlink] at
<a href="[post.url]">[post.time]</a>
</p>
<p><h1>Comments</h1>
<p>
[comments:here]
<p>
[include commentform]
[/posts]
[magic.pager]
[magic.stats]
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="clear: both;"> </div>
</body>
</html>
Got all that?
No?
Okay, let's take it a bit at a time.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
This tells the browser that the page is to be interpreted as XHTML. Whether it is valid XHTML or not depends on the template, but if you don't put this line in some funny things happen with the current stylesheet.
<html><head>
<title>[posts][post.title][/posts] </title>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://minx.cc/css/minx.css" type="text/css" />
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://minx.cc/scripts/showhide.js"></script>
</head>
The HTML head section.
The title line just puts the title of the post as the title on the browser window.
The next two lines pull in the CSS (stylesheet) - replace this with your own CSS; and the standard show/hide comments thingy.
Which this page doesn't actually
use, so we might as well remove it.
Anyway:
<body>
<div id="container">
<div id="center">
<div class="content">
The start of the body of the page. The DIVs depend on your stylesheet; you should be able to get an idea of what to put here by looking at your existing comments page.
[posts]
The start of the
posts block. Post-related tags are only guaranteed to work inside a posts block.
<h1>[post.title]</h1><p>
Display the title, nice and big.
[post.text]
<p>
[post.more]
Display the post body, then a paragraph break, then the extended post (if there is any). If there isn't an extended post, your page should still look nice and tidy.
<p class="posted">
Posted by: [post.authorlink] at
<a href="[post.url]">[post.time]</a>
</p>
Show that "Posted by" line.
<p><h1>Comments</h1>
<p>
A line that says "Comments" in nice big letters.
[comments:here]
Put the comments here. (Hey, this stuff is easy!)
[include commentform]
Include the comment form.
[/posts]
Don't forget to close whatever you opened!
[magic.pager]
You only really need this if you are going for paged comments, which don't work right now anyway.
[magic.stats]
Show performance statistics. You don't really need this at all... But it's cute.
</div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="clear: both;"> </div>
</body>
</html>
And close everything else. Yay!
Easy, huh? All you need to do is save this as a new index template called
page.entry... And wait for me to fix things so that Minx looks for the page.entry template instead of the mxEntry template. And viola!

Good questions!
1. Nothing happens to your old comments! Minx keeps your old comments! (Neat, huh?)
2. You don't need a file name at all. And turn that little auto-rebuild thingy off for the new template.

Ok, so we don't need a file name at all, so why do you say "All you need to do is save this as a new index template called page.entry... And wait for me to fix things so that Minx looks for the page.entry template instead of the mxEntry template. And viola!"
At the end of your post? I'm a little confused, do we actually only have to change the comments links?
Posted by: Oorgo @ at August 04, 2006 06:18 PM

Sorry, I don't understand. Am I supposed to replace the main index template with this code? If I do that, how will it be saved as "page.entry"? Won't this code simply replace the code that's there?
I'm sort of hopelessly confused.
Also, I made some changes to the main index template awhile back that turned off comments after a certain number of days, and also turned off comments for old posts. Does this code interfere with that?
Oh, I get it. I just change the name of the output file when saving the main index template from "index.php" to "page.entry", right? Tell me that's right, because that's what I did. You know... so I can sleep at least.

A Vote Against Spam
I think I can stop spam dead by turning off the Movable Type comments and replacing them with the Minx comment system.
Two drawbacks:
1. Minx doesn't rebuild your blog, so the comment count won't update. This will get fixed soon; it already tracks which pages need to be rebuilt, it just doesn't actually do it.
2. Minx doesn't send you notification emails.
Oh, and:
3. Minx comments by default don't look like your blog. They look like, well
this, for example. But you can edit the templates and change it to use your existing stylesheet.
Give me a day or two to tidy things up and post some instructions, and we should be able to kick this spam addiction for good.
The problem is, everyone needs to make the switch so that I can completely switch off MT comments completely, because MT comments leak (at least on our ancient version).
I should be able to do something to globally switch everyone over, which just leaves you to set up your own custom comment-page templates (which I can help with).
What do you think?

Is there a way to delete all 55 at once using the MY Blacklist, or do I have to keep doing them one by one?????
Any help, please e-mail me at kotgd AT yahoo DOT com.
Thanks!!!!!

Yes you can.
Go into the De-Spam function in MT-Blacklist, and ask it to display the last (say) 5000 comments and tick the All/No filter option.
You have to say 5000 because that's right across munu, not just your blog.
Tick the ones you want to get rid of, and tell it to zap the little buggers!

I don't know what it is, but something has broken lately and is letting significantly more spam through.
If people are getting email notification, though, it has to be Movable Type, because Minx doesn't do that yet. Why MT or Blacklist would suddenly stop working in this respect I don't know.

I've been running sweeps through the recent comments to bulk-erase spam, but I've been having some trouble with MT Blacklist. After a while, it just decides it doesn't want to work any more.
Sigh.
Have to get a few things out of the way this week, then I'm back to Minx 24/7.

You've got that many spammers hitting your blog on one weekend??? I guess I should feel fortunate that I only get one or two a day.

We have a hell of a lot more than that. About five million trackbacks in the past month, for starters.
I've blocked all of those addresses globally, so we won't be hearing from them any time soon. That just leaves four billion other rat-bastards.

Wups
Sorry about the crappy performance there. I'm copying all the accounts across to the new servers in advance of the move, and when CPanel got to my account, which is, um, somewhat large, it went bananas and drove the old server into the ground.
I'm really starting to dislike CPanel.

Also, Minx performance can really suck when the system is busy and parts of the database have been flushed from cache. I'm going to have to do some careful testing on a low-memory system to iron that out.
"No, still too fast! Take out another 64MB!"

New Comment Thingy Banning
I've been ordered by Rusty to ban some ne'er do-wells, however, they're still commenting. With the same IP address that I banned.
Does the new comment thingy recognize the IP banning list in MT?

Looking for help
Pixy is snowed with server issues. Does someone else in Munuviana know how to dig the side bar out of the works? I realized that not only are my blogrolls gone, but my catagories, most recent posts, most recent comments, hosted by, designed by etc are gone as well. I do not know how (and am smart enough not to attempt) to do any digging where the info probably resides. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Phin? Whatsakyer? anyone?

I tracked down a cached version of your blog from 7-23-06 on Google. I've emailed the source code for the cached version to you as a Notepad attachment.
You can simply locate which parts of your sidebar you are missing and cut and paste them back in. (This should work, in theory, at least.)
Might I suggest you then backup your template as a "template module"?
Click on "Templates" while you are logged into blog.mu.nu; copy your finalized template and then from the main "List Templates" menu, scroll down until you see "template module"; click "Create new template module."; paste the template into the space titled "module body", give it an appropriate title (sometimes I include a date, too) and click save. -- shazaam! you've got yourself a handy backup.
Let me know if you need any help.

Thanks kyer.
Everything is backed up - twice a day, in fact - but it takes time to restore the backup and retrieve the single record required.

Thanks Kyer, and thank you Pixy... Restored and working on the clean up... will have copies of all modules saved somewhere else... I may be slow to learn, but I learn...

I'm down as well, but Teresa at Technicalities and Tammi are still up.... if that tells you which server has crapped.

Sorry everyone.
Our wonderful hosting company rebooted the servers, and one of our wonderful servers decided not to work.
Fixed now.
This is why we're moving to new servers at a new hosting company next week.
