Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Put it online, they said
It'll make things so easy, they said

This article was written before election returns came in, so this is not an election thread. You are welcome to discuss that anyway if desired, since election returns are probably the main topic of conversation

The past decade or so has seen a wild proliferation of stuff that falls into the general category often called the "Internet of Things," or IoT. These are things that do something and connect to the internet either to perform its work or to extend its functionality. IoT devices are often referred to as "smart" devices. "Smart" cameras, doorbells, TVs, locks, thermostats, switches and more all go online to function or to work to their maximum effect. This is all increasingly common and often underscores security and privacy issues or risks. Those risks are so real that it's not unreasonable to just assume that all of it is simply not secure at all, and implement or it not based on your risk appetite.

But that's in the household. IoT is not merely merely for consumer electronics and household gadgets, it's also industrial equipment, and the risk profile there is radically different. If someone hacks your "smart lock," he can wander in and rob your house. If he hacks your "smart camera" and catches something compromising, he could blackmail you. If he hacks your factory, that's a whole different story. If he hacks your supply chain management, that's a whole different story. The risk blast radius in industry is much greater than it is at the household level, and those risks are not merely hypothetical. There have been some very public incidents in Europe that demonstrate the problem, as multiple attacks on industrial IoT were targeted squarely at the food supply.

Last month, there was a coordinated attack on commercial refrigeration equipment produced by a Danish manufacturer. Most of the targets were in France, and multiple supermarkets and suppliers were exposed to major product loss as a result of their refrigerators being told to stop refrigerating. This was accomplished setting the refrigeration temperatures high or turning on the integrated defrost cycle. The machines were not off, nor were they offline - they were just set high enough to let things spoil:

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's PM programme, Alex Pearce, the managing director of fruit and vegetable supplier Langridge Organic, said he had noticed on Monday morning that two of his company's fridges were showing "abnormal temperatures and defrost settings".

"A third fridge suddenly went into a defrost mode ... At the back of my mind I thought, 'I think we're being hacked.'

"So I unplugged the cable from the wall which disconnected our fridges from the outside world."

He said the company's fridges had been set as high as 150C.

Mr Pearce said: "I reckon I caught them by luck right in the middle of it being hacked."

He was paying attention, and intervened to contain the problem. Good for him, and I hope he got a bonus. The losses across the industry reached millions of Euros, and happened due to software vulnerabilities in the equipment. This is, in part, due to a collision of the software lifecycle and the industrial equipment lifecycle:
Danfoss told AFP in a statement that most of the affected equipment was "legacy" products which "no longer receive software or security updates".

It said its AK-SM800 and AK-SC355 fridge regulator systems were notably affected, with a version of the former using "outdated firmware". It added that it had long advised supermarkets to update from those models. Danfoss gave no figures of how many systems were affected.

Commercial or industrial refrigerators are capital equipment, and can see very long service life - service life that will almost inevitably be much longer than software is typically maintained, patched and kept secure. "Update from those models" is not a very good solution for major durable goods.

Authorities in France described the attacks as "amateurish" and offered assurances that there was almost no chance a state actor was involved. That is probably true, but that also makes it worse, not better. If some unsophisticated hackers can cause a few million Euros in losses (which are food losses) literally overnight, imagine what the sophisticated ones can do - especially since it happened again this week, in a different set of countries and with a different manufacturer's equipment. Like last time, some outfits noticed right away and intervened while others suffered significant product losses. The overall scale of the more recent event was smaller, but it was the exact same style of attack: instruct the connected refrigerators to change their setpoints.

Connected industrial equipment gives a real benefit to the operator, which is why it is used and why organizations will pay for it. Centralized monitoring capability alone is probably worth it for any organization with multiple locations. Real-time status, conditions monitoring, fault detection and isolation, coordinated maintenance activities, utility cost optimization and more are all very real improvements to large-scale operations and industrial IoT makes that possible. Those very real benefits, however, come with very real risks when it comes to both failure scale (the consequences of errors can be more severe, because they are wider in scope) and external threats (hackers and similar). The convenience and optimization of industrial IoT requires rigorous change control, security-conscious infrastructure design and strict security process control. Many places - and manufacturers - embrace the former and skimp on the latter. Control surfaces are directly connected to the internet, updates don't get applied, change control is lackadaisical, corporate infrastructure security is poor, etc. Fixing those things not only reduces operational convenience, it increases cost - though probably not more than major equipment failures.

These have been comparatively little incidents and were not disasters. They were loss-making inconveniences, but the scope of these attacks has been thankfully limited. These small-scale incidents, however, highlight a major risk. More than a decade ago, someone once put to me as, "our only hope is that the Internet of incompatible Things collapses under its own weight before the Internet of insecure Things gets us all killed." Engineers have largely solved the compatibility problems, because that's what engineers do. The security problems, however, must be dealt with before little incidents like these refrigeration attacks are seen merely as contextual footnotes in the history of industrial IoT disasters.

I love reading about the fridges in Europe. Let's connect everything. What could go wrong?

A lady just rang my doorbell. A neighbour put out a barbecue and she asked for help to put it into her truck.

I kind of needed that today.

11 The convenience of much of IoT isn't worth the safety, privacy, and maintenance costs

Great I can set my home thermometer remotely.

So can the government
So can random hackers
The device will be more expensive
It will break more often
My parents won't be able to figure it out

And let's add passwords to all these things do and require them to be "secure" so everyone has a list of passwords written down somewhere...

20 I keep referring to a former co-worker who put his whole house in the IoT. The locks for the doors, the appliances, the garage, HVAC, entertainment center and of course all the connected devices.

Then, during an epic winter storm, lost power. For days.

They were locked out of their house, once in, couldn't use anything without a generator... so he bought one.

But the internet's down. And your apps won't work without it.

None of these networks touched the Capital I Internet. While we using Internet Protocol, all of these transactions were conducted over private networks.

I seems to me that some cheapshit enterprises in Europe messed up by not spending the Euros on private networks.

I think we look at internet security in a wrong way.

The idea is software needs to be a fortress because their are endless barbarian wanting to come in and loot it.

I have a look on my door, but if a group of people really wanted to get in they can. That doesn't happen because it will bring police who will arrest them.

With the internet it is harder to arrest people sure. But the answer to that should be more severe punishment. If we started hanging people/droning people for hacking and broadcast it on TV internet security wouldn't be such a difficult field...

Which is why they really shouldn't be software-based, at all. When you convert a mechanical system to a software system, you turn a likely reliable machine into something that is increasingly unstable and ephemeral.

Posted by: t-bird at November 04, 2026 11:09 AM (Kkd7+)

Refrigeration equipment has to be monitored to keep product from spoiling if the temperature gets too high. Residential refrigerators are plug and play, but supermarket refrigeration systems are complex and require a great deal of maintenance. I've been in the refrigeration industry since I graduated from college, and these systems have been in place since the late 80's. AFAIK there have never been any large scale attacks against grocery stores like we are seeing now. With AI, this is only the beginning. Anything connected to the interwebz is vulnerable, and this type of hacking could literally bring this country to its knees in weeks.

Basically every Republican won every position they won in 2024 and 2022. However the margins were about 6% smaller on average looking at it ballpark.

In a state like mine a 6% shift doesn’t do much since the margins are so high to begin with. Winning by 20 or by 14, whatever still a solid win.

In a state where wins are in razor thin like a Wisconsin or Michigan or even minesotta that’s a tsunami election for the other side.

This is my WAG as to what happened last night. The Dems managed to pin their own the blame for their own horrible policies and behavior on the opposition, because the opposition couldn't undo the damage in two years.

I believe that the average American is struggling financially right now, especially if they're young. Thanks to being bled dry by years of Bidenomics, their credit and savings are blown. Trump promised to fix that, and he hasn't (yet).

And if corruption is an emerging theme, there has been nothing more damaging than the corporate and government leftist alliances and the corruption they've spawned. The dems own the bulk of that, but seem to have convinced voters otherwise.

I thought we would perform much better last night and keep the Senate. Michigan elected an anti-semite jihadist. Texas, of all places, elected a trans, gay senator that took 2 weeks of the election off. Neither of those was because of gas prices or inflation. 137 How many new "sanctuary" states? TX? (!!) Others? Enforcing immigration law is already incredibly difficult due to institutional/civic collapse generally. Just wait til you see what it's like starting in January.

Census definitely without legislative fixes. Birthright citizenship absurdity ditto. God knows what destructive vandalism re data centers, AI, etc (even with vetoes, capital can go on strike as it did under Obama).

Leaving aside the electoral picture for 2028, seems most are just ignoring the catastrophe we're seeing/about to see.

139 Most voters don’t spend their days analyzing every piece of data like oh gdp is up 3% kudos to you dear chap Donald. They know Trump is in office, gas is $4 it was under $3 before the war he started. And they’re pissed off.

Voters show their anger is voting for the other party. I really don’t think it’s more complicated than that. It may not be rational but it’s how it works.

It’s back to Clinton’s “it’s the economy stupid”.

The economy is doing good for the top 10%, aka those who own the stocks. It is not doing good for the bottom 90% and particularly the 40-90% groups where Repubs have thrived.

Having a job with no salary increases with inflation rampant, so you work a ton and can't afford life is not gonna ever feel like "the economy is good" - it's gonna feel like someone is lying to your face.

Not to mention the entry level and AI job losses that make finding non-minimum wage jobs for those out of work so difficult.

207 >>So things flipping blue was likely. But the amount they flipped blue needs digging into. Looking at the demographics of the votes cast, once they are all in. Analyzing what can be fixed for 2028.

We hired Trump to do hard things, things that are obviously unpopular with at least half the country. He sealed the border and is deporting illegals at a record pace. He took down a red/green alliance in Venezuela, Cuba and Iran that has been poisoning this country for decades in many ways. He laid the groundwork for fixing our economy with very controversial tariffs that are onshoring manufacturing in ways we haven't seen since the 1960s which is when most weren't even born. And he did it largely on his own.

Half the country despises him and us. They murdered a nice guy like Charlie Kirk just for talking with them. Our schools have been breeding grounds for generations that are nothing like us. The left has been radicalized. We better get even more radicalized against them or we are screwed.

208 Here is this , just a data point :

"Two Colorado ballot issues addressing transgender youth were passing with narrow majorities as vote counting continued into the night Tuesday.

About 52.4% of voters supported Proposition 134, which would ban transgender youth from school sports teams that match their gender identities, as of 4 a.m. Wednesday. About 47.6% opposed the measure.

Similarly, about 52% of voters supported Proposition 135, which would prohibit gender-affirming surgeries for people under 18, with 48% rejecting it."

219 Well ... last night sucked.

I was optimistic yesterday all the way to about 6 pm. Then I started seeing numbers that looked ... bad.

I couldn't have been more wrong about my predictions.

But the reason I was wrong is that I think I'm right about a phenomenon that I'm been talking about for years:

We have Trump and nobody else. Without him actually on the ballot, too many of us stay home. We have no GOtV efforts. The Dums crush us in getting their people to "vote." We don't.

We are fucking doomed in 2028 unless we can somehow get our shit together. Anyone here think JD will get asses out of seats in 2028?

Posted by: Elric The Blade at November 04, 2026 11:48 AM (iFTx/)

220 So far, the Dems have picked up 15 seats. They started Election Day with 215, they are now projected to win 228. 68 seats are to be determined.

In 1982, Ronald Reagan was half-way through his first term. The Republicans took a beating then, too. The GOP kept control of the Senate, but the Dems added 26 more seats to their majority in the House.

The MSM of the day hated Reagan about as much as they hate DJT now, and they ALL went on and on how this was the end of the "Reagan Revolution". Almost immediately after the last vote was counted, the policies that the Reagan Administration had pushed through despite the worst efforts of the Dem-controlled House to stop them, kicked in. The result was the 1984 "Morning in Amerca" election which RR won in a Mega Landslide.

A year before the midterms, Dugin was already describing how Trump’s own base could make Republicans lose the midterms. He named the American influencers he thought could pull that support away, identified Israel as the issue that would split the party, and said what Trump would have to give in to Russia to reverse course.

On November 14, 2025 he described the pressure campaign in public. Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Steve Bannon, Alex Jones, and Nick Fuentes were the media figures in the that would help punish Trump. He described the Groypers pressing Republican figures in public to choose between America First and Israel First, and said the Israel issue will bring parts of the MAGA right and the anti-Israel left into alignment....

Today he reinforced that message blaming Trump’s backing of Netanyahu, the war with Iran, and the economic and energy fallout. He said Trump sided with neoconservatives, Zionists, and what Dugin called the deep state, and “lost everything.” His bluntest line was “Iran defeated Trump.”

He laid out the strategy for how he was going to run control over American foreign policy in 2025..."

I dont believe these states changed in a meaningful way ideologically or demographically. They're just sick of Trump's schtick.

A lot of "conservative" ballot props actually passed, it's just voters wanted to send a message to Trump and they felt voting dems or sitting out was the way to do that.

I take no glee in this, I would love it if Trump was a popular President and got more Republicans elected, but its just not the case.

If I was a Dem, I'd want conservatives to be waving the Trump flag forever as it went (further) off the cliff.

272 “ Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. “

274 232 Most voters don’t spend their days analyzing every piece of data like oh gdp is up 3% kudos to you dear chap Donald. They know Trump is in office, gas is $4 it was under $3 before the war he started. And they’re pissed off.

Gas is under $3/gallon in Texas.

They just elected Talarico.

It wasn't about the price of gas.

Agree. See my comment above. Our GOtV efforts are terrible and without Trump we just aren't motivated.

The GOP "brand" is dogshit. Polls worse than genital herpes. But MAGA is a much bigger tent. People vote for Trump who wouldn't vote for a rando GOP candidate. But when Trump isn't actually on the ballot, those people either stay home or -- gasp -- vote for the Dum.

Posted by: Elric The Blade at November 04, 2026 11:50 AM (iFTx/)

I don't know what happened in my state, Texas, last night. My best guess is every pro-abortion, pro-tranny, pro-open borders, and tax the rich person voted, and too many Republicans stayed home out of apathy, stupidity, or I don't know what.

Posted by: Gref at November 04, 2026 12:00 PM (5rh/l)

275 >>I take no glee in this, I would love it if Trump was a popular President and got more Republicans elected, but its just not the case.

Trump was elected president, 3 times, and has delivered on what he promised and more.

Texas just elected a talking penis. Michigan elected jihadist. If you think this was about hating Trump you probably voted for Ron or Haley.

I disagree with some of the above.

I do think that the war in Iran was a mistake of timing.

Trump and his people had to know that prices would rise just as they were going down to comfortable levels after Biden.

Would waiting 8 months or a year have mattered? Till after the election.

Only if Trump received intelligence that Iran had a bomb ready to deliver on Israel or us, does a war at that time make sense.

And BONUS! Conducting a "kind war" to leave infrastructure, etc intact and minimize the death toll, assuming the anti-gov't forces would take over once the mullahs and gov't were decapitated was...well, misreading the situation. Short of flattening everything in sight instantly like in a real war, this was going to last, at least a year or two.

So, now the Dims will hand Iran a victory. America's blood and treasure wasted and revenge will be sought. Plus, the USA now becomes Flambe' France.

Terrific.

284 I think gas prices were in the mix, but I legit think 10-1 the issue was more about going to war with Iran and Trump looking reckless.

Even the war in Ukraine was why gas prices spiked, Republicans would have weathered that. It was around the same price in 2022 under Biden and Dems did fine.

The conflict with Iran was necessary and vital to US national security. Period. It temporarily increased (bigly), the price of energy. Iran's response to US strikes simply demonstrated their regional capacity to hold the world's oil energy needs hostage for the furtherance of their imperialist ambitions. Fortunately, we have a president willing to pay the political price to stop them.

290 A theory: Trump is focused more on the long game. With Iran, take their grip (Strait of Hormuz) out of the middle east equation. Tarrifs will eventually bring more production to the USA. None of this happens overnight, or even in a couple years. But it is a long game strategy.

Unfortunately, the electorate is what about me, right now. I think Trump lost sight of this.

The GOP did absolutely nothing in the last 2 years. Yeah, yeah the BBB. The party is run by, and full of drifters. At the expense of us, they got their comeuppance. We got rid of some (Collins).
