Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Coal Deserves A Second Look![]() [click to enlarge] Coal kept the cost of electricity at an affordable level for over a century but idealistic policy decisions to close to 300 coal plants in the last 15 years have opened the door for higher and more volatile electricity prices. In 2010, the price of electricity in the U.S. was about 11 cents per kilowatt hour. By 2026 the price of electricity has increased 75% to 19 cents. And, according to the Department of Energy, rates could increase another 40% in the next four years. Meanwhile coal generation has dropped from 45% of America's power to barely 16% today and is projected to decline another 50% by 2030. In statistics this is called an inverse correlation. Simply put, the more we reduce coal generation the more we will pay for electricity. It is a sad irony that the very people who were instrumental in prematurely closing efficient coal plants, now whine about increases in the cost of electricity.Energy is life, and inexpensive and abundant energy drives economic growth unlike any other input. We created the greatest economic engine in human history by providing that energy, and much of it was coal! The increased use of petroleum correlates with the rise of the automobile, which makes engineering sense because gasoline and diesel are so energy dense. But the steel used to build those cars was made with coal energy, and using coal for industrial power and electrical generation is a perfect pairing with petroleum for transportation. Another reason for the decline of coal and its vilification is its history as the fuel for the rise of the West, and America in particular. It is linked with post-modern evils such as industrialization, colonialism, etc. It powered the great industries of the 19th century West, and is linked with the dominance of White Europeans over the rest of the world. So the crypto-communist environmental lobby has pushed to destroy our greatest source of energy, and the intended consequence is that electricity costs have skyrocketed! Because they want us to regress to the mean, and that mean is European summers during which tens of thousands of people die from the heat, because they are too poor to afford air conditioning. And look forward to wearing coats inside during the winter, because fuel will become so expensive that Jimmy Carter's cardigan will become a quaint glimpse of a better time! Coal does not come without costs. Natural gas, nuclear, and solar are superior across many metrics (probably not wind though). In particular, coal kills a lot of people, though less than it used to:

Once upon a time I was a coal miner, for many years. And yet, I survivrd. The forces arrayed against coal were/are well funded and organized. They effectively destroyed the industry in order to promote the Watermelon agenda. It would take a couple of decades of countermeasures to restore the industry. Probably dead then. Maybe better to push nuclear energy.

To return to coal requires quite a big investment. Many of the coal generating plants were old and because of EPA grandfathering and limits on renovations before it became treated as a 'new' coal plant, could not be updated much.
Many of the Eastern mines have closed and the Western mines are indeed strip mines. Western coal had just about pushed all the older Eastern mines into bankruptcy because the West's coal is predominately low sulfur while the East is not. Low sulfur is required to make the necessary scrubbers on emissions work. Particulate regulation by the EPA is also something that many of the aging coal plants cannot meet without grandfathering. Same issue that required diesels to be cleaned up and required emission systems on diesel engines. Add in all the costs of meeting environmental standards of today, I dunno if coal can be priced cheap enough for utility plants to return to using it for new plants. In part, it is also because natural gas does fine in power generation, is quicker to start and stop, emits a lot less problematic emissions and has no problem meeting a lot of EPA standards without expensive emissions equipment. They will not give that up easily and coal is the centerpiece of their demonization of carbon over the past three decades. Meanwhile, China is producing new coal plants weekly. 17 People in general have bought the " coal dirty" message that was pushed down their throats their whole life.
Posted by: steevy Because old coal power plants were in fact dirty. They dropped particulates down wind of those stacks. Same as being next to railroad tracks when coal was used for locomotives instead of diesel/electric. New plants can be built that don't have that problem but require expensive and temperamental emissions scrubbers, etc. And that makes it easier for power companies to just turn to natural gas that does not have those problems. Fracking did more to kill coal than anything the government did. When natural gas was such an abundant by-product they were just burning it off it was clear it would surpass coal - and thankfully it did take some steam out of the renewable push since it is pretty clean and super reliable, as well as cheap.

22 And we can turn coal into fuel to power vehicles other than electric.
Posted by: Anna Puma ======= We can, we can even turn it into coal gas as a nat gas substitute, but the process is kinda nasty. Coal gas sites from over a century ago are still EPA superfund type sites because of the nasty concentrated byproducts from that process. Carbon is wonderfully complex and has its own specialty organic chemistry that takes advantage of that. But, not all processes that can be done actually pay out without either subsidies or some other tactic like mandated alcohol content in gasoline. Synthetic gasoline production was used by the Notsees and later by South Africa during it being sanctioned but were done more from desperation in lacking crude oil to refine than from economics. The anthracite coal burns pretty clean, but I think that is mostly PA and OH areas. Can get it by the bag at Tractor Supply type places for $12 for a 40 pound bag, which makes about 16,200 BTUs. I think that too many Canadians have the unfortunate mindset that they are Europeans stuck on this barbarian continent with the barbarians to their south.
Now, they got this honest wanting to be like their motherlands in the UK & France, but they also, unfortunately got their arrogance and superiority complex about America from the same place. Not All Canucks are like this, of course - we have a few great ones here - but they have been so brainwashed by their media that a good 70% of them can't think straight anymore and believe they are going to virtue signal themselves to victory over Trumphitler. The latest scare the Canadian government is going for is to keep dropping "America might invade us" pieces everywhere just to rev the engines a little more for Carney & the Liberals. It is just not price competitive and has problems with the leftover byproducts that can be quite toxic. Again, we either subsidize it or require its use like ethanol by legislative fiat. Actually, compressed natural gas is probably a better option under that circumstance and if you had to, you can make an ersatz natural gas aka coal gas from coal. Easier than distillation process. My grandparents had a coal furnace.
Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory at October 15, 2026 11:34 AM (seCv0) We had a coal furnace back in the 50's when I was a kid. My dad worked midnights at a local factory, so my mom would go down to the basement, shake down the grates, and shovel some coal into the fire, making sure it was spread evenly. She would open the small vent on the furnace door to keep a constant draft all night. It was a boiler that made steam for the cast iron radiators. Steady heat all night. If I remember, we used around 9 or 10 tons of coal over the winter. We converted to oil in 1961. No more coal bin, no more shoveling coal. In some cases, like national security, we can see that producing oil at home prevented us from the Middle East vetoing our actions by oil embargoes. But Trump is not subsidizing the petroleum industry to do it. It is economically efficient for us right now. We can move to producing more coal fired plants over time but the investment is expensive compared to nat gas and either ratepayers or governments will have to pay to spin those plants up.
Posted by: whig at October 15, 2026 11:33 AM (E4rtv) I don't expect it to happen instantly. But we just should not abandon coal like we are doing. This shouldn't have happened to begin with, as we closed too many coal fired plants down that could have been modernized and we wouldn't be facing electricity price hikes like we have seen. We could be investing in more hydropower, too, but the environmentalists can't stand a blocked river. Posted by: SpeakingOf at October 15, 2026 11:44 AM (6ydKt) 119

Posted by: t-bird Energy production and use are textbook examples of tradeoffs. Lots of items can be 'burned' or in nuclear, split or fused, to produce energy. But each source has its own cost/benefit analysis that makes it quite complex to just get the economics correct. And you get nat sec problems when you rely on cheap energy that suddenly is no longer available due to crises abroad. And then you are properly f*cked just like Germany is right now. They shut down their nukes and went all in on solar/wind when it did not make sense literally but could do so because they imported cheap Russian nat gas. Now that is gone, and they are stuffed. You can burn coal - even high-sulfur coal - cleanly. Back in the early 1990s I worked at a government research lab working on clean coal combustion and they had a number of furnace designs that worked just fine. Bench scale, and maybe not all of them would scale up; that's always a risk. But the technology exists, it just needs adoption.

we baled out of Houston almost 8 years ago and bought a smaller house an hour away...the house had no gas
Centerpoint came to the rescue and brought a gas line all the way down the block (650'), under a street, under the driveway and set the meter on the back of the house. When I asked how much it would cost they replied "No charge, when the neighbors see you have gas they'll want it too". Posted by: DanMan at October 15, 2026 12:09 PM (8uzBS) 208

I can't imagine living around here with the FREQUENT power outages (thanks PECO!) in the winter with all-electric heat! yikes. and your pipes! I guess you have to get a gas-powered generator
Posted by: Black Orchid (j+aD2) at October 15, 2026 11:54 AM (j+aD2) ___ Due to the terrain and remoteness of my AO, power outages are also a thing. The Co-op is great when it comes to responding to outages, but it may take a while. We have an outdoor wood furnace, a wood stove, and a dual fuel genny. I saw a video from a woman playfully calling herself a conspiracy theorist and showing every 2 years there is some sort of sex scandal the FNM goes nuts for 90 days before the federal elections and today I see the Babylon Bee picked up her video.

Worldwide coal use is not down at all. The highest year of coal production was like 2 years ago. It’s just down in countries where white ppl and communists live. The rest of the world has more than taken up the slack.

Posted by: Black JEM I agree pretty much. Feudal lords got to be the top dog because they earned it originally and the whole system required heirs to go through complex military training and leading troops into battles to keep it. It was not until much much later that these feudal lines became decadent in softer ages than the founders had. Posted by: whig at October 15, 2026 12:19 PM (E4rtv) 228
