The Morning Rant: CAFE Is Neutered, But Not Dead Yet!

The pathetic and impossible manipulations of the automobile market perpetrated by a series of ignorant administrations came to a head with the drooling imbecile figurehead named Joe Biden. Mandating an impossible 50 miles/gallon for 2031 was wishcasting on a grand scale. It is impossible to achieve without destroying the market for large automobiles and shifting America to tiny econo-boxes with ridiculous technology designed without attention to what consumers actually want.

But...that's what they want! The idea of sacrificing another American industry on the altar of ClimateChange^TM was (and is) the Democrat Party's wet dream! Imagine all of the people who would sign up for government assistance! All the new programs to retrain workers for the new green economy!

Thankfully, the current administration realized that CAFE was just another tool to destroy our economy, and gutted the future standard.

Just not enough! They have allowed an increase from the current 30 miles/gallon to 35 miles/gallon by 2031. Instead of allowing consumer demand to drive technological improvement, the government did what all governments everywhere throughout history have done...tell us what to do. So the car companies will build shitty little cars that get good mileage so their average fuel economy will satisfy the government edict. That's not how markets work!

Anyone who has ever driven a modern car understands how ridiculous some of the solutions have been. That maddening auto-shut-off that kills the engine at seemingly random times when the car is stopped? Does anybody like that? Does anyone believe that adding thousands of additional starting cycles to a starter and engine is a good idea? Or the disappearance of spare tires because their weight cuts into fuel economy? What about the millions of people who get stranded and have to spend time and money for a tow to a tire shop instead of spending 15 minutes to change the tire themselves?

All of these "innovations" have opportunity costs that are borne by the consumer, but are not calculated into the decision. The auto companies are fixated on meeting CAFE, not improving the total cost of owning and operating an automobile. And that is government's fault!

The girl who lives in the apartment below me is obviously well off (or her family is.) New Mercedes SUV, etc. Well, her parents pull up one day in this 60'sish station wagon. Aftermarket stuff (because I figure no stock exhaust sounded like that.) Wrap around windshield. I was letting the dog out and I stopped and just stared. It was beautiful.

We used to be a proper country.

We've been vaguely thinking of getting a new car over the next 6-12 month period. Maybe sooner, maybe later.

Anyway, the lovely and technologically-curious Mrs naturalfake asked me, "Have you thought about electric?"

And, I honestly answered, "No." but said I'd check them out.

I test drove a Tesla Y L and have to say it was pretty amazing. You can set a destination and it will drive you there all by itself. You could probably be sleeping in the back seat, if it let you. I sent it over various roads and it worked perfectly. It's very much a sterile techno-box inside, but it did everything it's supposed to do in my 30 min frolic.

Then I test drove a Rivian R1S. Not as technologically proficient, you can let it run once you're on the street or highway, and it does that well, but you need to guide it to your destination.
Inside, it's pretty luxurious in an outdoorsy way.

Both are really nice though pretty dang pricey for what they are. Around town they're probably pretty great and short trips but once you get on the road, say between DFW and Santa Fe or Denver or Tucson, you are really at the mercy of the chargers available and not all of them are well...good quality.

I like it. Predictable and controllable once your used to it. Restarts every time quicker than my right foot gets from the brake to the gas. Bigger better battery and starter. It knows which cylinder is next and with direct injection fuels and fires it. It's part of hybridization now.

The bit that bugs me is the stops in parking space and then re-starts when I put the transmission into Park?

Gotta use Manual in parking lot.

The newest technology supposedly turns off the light that would blind oncoming cars while keeping on the parts of the headlights that wouldn't. Many of this and next year's new models have it.

To be fair, my acc works like this: Get in car. To normal full start you have to push in the clutch. Do not push in the clutch, just hit the start button. Light will flash (because car is not started) but you have full power. Push again and you have the limited radio and power to the charging ports and can roll up and down the windows for 9 mins. Infotainment/radio shuts off as well after the 9 mins. Charging ports stay powered for about 2 hours from what I have seen.

Full EVs are just dumb tech gadgets, we've had electric cars since the 19th century and they just never take off. But hybrid gives you the same advantages as trains: power, long distance capability, quick reload of power, good efficiency, etc.

I mean its never going to be a Hellcat or a Corvette, but for just daily driving etc it will be fine.

Almost all modern auto assembly plants are automated. The BMW plant in Spartanburg is 10 million square feet and produces almost 500,000 cars a year. But there are almost no employees on the assembly lines. It's all robots.

In all these plants, though, there are many people working on computers similar machines that run the robots and other automation. You don't see them on the floor, though.

148 I always despised EV/hybrid and self-drive until I got my new car. It's a hybrid that can run on EV mode only, and has an "intelligent" cruise control that matches the speed of the car ahead and can steer the car between lanes.

It's a really cool feature for commuting, especially in traffic. Put on the CC and the car drives itself in boring, potentially infuriating traffic. It will even come to a stop and start moving again.

I like that much more than I thought I would.

157 148 I always despised EV/hybrid and self-drive until I got my new car. It's a hybrid that can run on EV mode only, and has an "intelligent" cruise control that matches the speed of the car ahead and can steer the car between lanes.

It's a really cool feature for commuting, especially in traffic. Put on the CC and the car drives itself in boring, potentially infuriating traffic. It will even come to a stop and start moving again.

I like that much more than I thought I would.

I do too, to me it's like an extra pair of eyes that will keep me and my family safe, had a car come 2 lanes over cut off the car in front of me and he slammed the brakes and my car was faster than me putting the brakes on, I felt the brake pedal leave my foot it was so fast.

This is pretty much the only fault of my Infiniti Q60, and they also made darn sure you could never put a donut in the trunk. They put two metal blocks in the space where the donut would go. This was because they were specced with 'Run Flats', so you wouldn't need it, right? Well, a lot of us owners yanked those heavy, expensive tires off. I've got Roadside Assistance through both the dealership and AAA, and it's worth it.

I think it's more of a space issue. Bigger cars and SUVs do have spare tires. The smaller ones, there's no room.

Plus, the number of people who can change a spare tire in 2026 is very low.

99.99% of people will just call roadside ass't. The luxury and exotic brands specifically do NOT want you changing your own tires. They do not want rich doctors and bankers outside their Lambo on the side of the road trying to change a tire. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm surprised they're not down more than that. I can't imagine using an unregulated "drug" in this day and age--fentanyl ruined that market for any with any sense. I can think of at least 3 people that I was friends with that died from that crap in the last 5-10 years. They were all just "regular" works-5-days-a-week people who liked to cut loose on a Friday or Saturday night. And they got handed something they shouldn't have, and they're no longer with us.

Even if it works well, it is still worthless. The improvement in fuel mileage is tiny, if it exists at all. And if something goes wrong, and the car simply fails to start one day, you have an added layer of complexity to wade through in order to troubleshoot the problem.

- CAFE is regressive and hurts lower class and middle class the most

Give future politicians the ammunition to show that all this environmental crap is a lie. Make it political poison. There is lots to do here. It looks like RFKjr is trying to do it for vaccines and he is doing it for crime and immigration, but more needs to be done on the environmental crap.

Toyota has LED headlights that scan like a CRT so the computer can precisely control what does and doesn't get lit up (no blinding opposite lanes, for instance). But US regulations are so strict they can't ship them here.

The OH numbers are more important because OH has a longer history and greater emphasis on mail in early voting. The NC numbers are less significant because early voting in NC is much more about in person early voting, mail in voting is a very small number.
