Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at September 18, 2026 09:43 AM (ccf/V)

53 It's somehow unsettling how there are suggestions of motion in the painting, but no overall feeling of movement. The crashing waves, the fisherman's lean, the bent pole, the very nature of the seashore... it should have some sense of dynamic movement, but I'm just not feeling it. It's peculiar, because it is technically good on so many other levels.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at September 18, 2026 09:47 AM (k5CNB)

75 Although I like much of Bellows' style many of his scenes are cityscapes of various kinds which have little appeal. However, his scenes of nature use the same techniques of movement and color and light in images I enjoy. This is one. He really captured the colors of the water as it surges and breaks against the rocks with the light greens of shallows into the blues of the deeper water and the white foam as waves break against the shore. The rounded look of the rocks, worn by wave action, is so true. The fisherman's posture is correct and the bend in the rod as well. The style is realistic without being a photo.

Anyone who has fished the surf as it breaks against rocks will identify with this image. You can hear the ocean, smell the water and feel the wind and damp in the air.

Posted by: JTB at September 18, 2026 09:47 AM (yTvNw)

76 How did people in the past keep fedoras on when it was windy?

I assume if you are fishing the last thing you want to do it keep grabbing your hat every 30 seconds.

113 I've seen enough episodes of Shetland to know this guy isn't fishing. He's trying to haul in the suitcase full of illicit drugs dropped off the coast of Fair Isle by Norwegian criminal gangs using a fishing trawler to traffic their goods into Shetland. Jimmy Perez will nab him with the help of DS McIntosh...

157 The Fisherman, 1917
George Bellows

A very nice week of art. Thanks. Though some may say today's selection is missing mermaids and at least one dog, imo it's a fine one & it would likely hang.

So, is there a link?

Yes. Again from the Carter Handbook, 2023, and credited to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas:

"Although best known as a painter of gritty urban scenes, Bellows created more than 250 seascapes, most portraying the Atlantic Coast in Maine. But he turned his attention to the Pacific in 1917, when his family vacationed in the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, on the northern tip of Big Sur. There, he created this work, one of his last major ocean paintings.

Bellows was fascinated by the bright colors of the Pacific, and he relied on a jewellike palette of brilliant blues, greens, purples, pinks, and ochres to render water crashing against a rocky coastline. He considered the sea one of the most challenging subjects to paint, and the lone angler maneuvering his line may symbolize the struggle of the artist as he grappled with his chosen subject."

Good weekend!

From smalldeadanimals, so our trade war is going great! We're led by the best and brightest.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s summit urging global investors to “Choose Canada” was produced by an American events firm — despite Carney recently pledging that Ottawa would contract Canadian companies and hire Canadian workers.

The inaugural Canada Investment Summit in Toronto brought together investors who manage more than $100 trillion in assets from nearly 30 countries as part of Carney’s push to catalyze $1 trillion in investment over five years.

Analysts say over $1 trillion in investment abandoned Canada

But the summit’s producer was E2K Events x Entertainment, operated by California-based Olmstead Productions Inc.

E2K’s own privacy notice identifies the American company as the summit’s producer. It also says E2K and its subcontractors provided services including event production, delegate services, staffing, transportation, printing, photography and video.

During the crusades the Christians lost Jerusalem after the battle at Hattin. Richard the Lionhearted got it back and then later they lost it again.

But in the 1200s one Muslim ruler just...gave it back to them...because he wanted an alliance. I guess the whole "yeah Jerusalem is our holy city too honest!" thing wasn't as import back then...

229 The Kennedy Center, only built in the mid-1960s, is falling apart and poses physical dangers just trying to keep it operational.

For example, for many years, there was nothing but friable asbestos issues in all of the mechanical spaces in which private contractors were routinely working to keep all kinds of piping, electrical, AC systems in operation.

Additionally, plans showed asbestos had been sprayed as fireproofing directly onto the steel framework of the building. Over 26,000 square feet of asbestos-containing insulation was found on the steel structures alone.

Even if contractors didn't disturb it, with air movements, leaking ceilings, etc. it became friable sooner or later. Simply put, the structure itself and all of its mechanical and electrical parts were old & often repaired or replaced in part.

The Kennedy Center is operated and controlled through a shared responsibility between both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government. The legislative branch would usually bring in the contractors and the executive branch often had to inspect the contractors upon receiving complaints for incompliance with standards (OSHA, etc.).

Obama's record on immigration in his first term was actually better than W's.

It was after the shellacking of 2010 and the surprise underperformance in 2012 (which they overcame with cheating) that they suddenly started counting border turnaways as deportations, starting the statistics games that made him look better while upping asylum acceptances.

DACA didn't happen until June of 2012.

As someone who works for maintaining a 1950's building, having asbestos fireproofing on steel columns is common. Asbestos doesn't become hazardous until you disturb it (remove it) and it becomes airborne dust particles and inhaled. Asbestos insulation is also common around steam and chilled water piping.

So whomever wrote that doesn't know jack-sh@t about building maintenance.

The contractors working doing repairs and other work were not necessarily unprotected under the asbestos standards. Often sampling - or lack thereof - was the issue.

However, Trump is proposing closing the Kennedy Center to protect the general public in the theaters and main exhibit areas.

Contractors are protected by federal (occupational safety and health) standards, as you well know. Members of the general public are NOT so protected.

And Congress' S&H program, despite Bernie's big mouth, is/was "lacking" at best.

He is a Disruptor.

His shtick is to shove [current thing] down the audience's throat, and when some of them complain, the woke mob swarms to demonize him.

Previously, he had a song w/an LGBTQ activist singer celebrating queer love. When they performed it at the Grammies (because of course it was nominated), dozens of gay couples positioned themselves throughout the venue, and then they paused the song to perform a mass gay marriage ceremony. Captive audience, that no doubt included some conservative Gospel and Country artists, were forced to participate.

He is an a$$hole activist from Seattle, and he will do something just as obnoxious when the next [new thing] comes along. It's not about SSM or Palestine, it's about making a normal event into and activist brawl, where others are forced to support or be eaten by the mob. The mob is already busy destroying Ed Sheeran.
