Posted by: dantesed at June 05, 2026 09:48 AM (Oy/m2) 106
Limerick explanation:
Sickle cell anemia is a genetic condition that largely afflicts African-Americans. It gets its name from the shape of red blood cells into a curved configuration resembling a harvesting sickle during low oxygen conditions. When this happens, the blood cells can cause blockages in capillaries resulting in tissue necrosis of organs. This is a sickle cell "crisis". In the patois of southern Louisiana I have heard patients refer to it as "sick as hell anemia" and mention "blood clogs" as part of the disease. (However, I never heard anyone "heave a scythe of relief.) Posted by: muldoon at June 05, 2026 09:48 AM (qgHp7) 107

The painting doesn't make much sense. The subject is holding a sickle, which is a harvesting instrument, in a field where the vegetation is barely ankle-high. Larks 'ascend' in the morning, so this is intended to be daybreak, I think. She's open-mouthed, as if this is the first time Country Girl has ever heard bird song, which is very unlikely.
Not intended for practical-minded country folk, this painting is for the high-minded bourgeoisie in the Big City. Posted by: mrp at June 05, 2026 09:50 AM (rj6Yv) 115

What a lovely painting. The peasant girl about to start another day of labor. She is young, sturdy from work, even her feet are broad from contact with the ground. She probably doesn't expect her life to change. The colors of her world, even her clothes, are muted, not dull but of the earth. The one bright spot is the rising sun, the start of a new day. Then, as the sun first appears, she hears the lark singing and pauses. Her expression is not exaggerated just still, as a sound of loveliness and life touches her. It is subtle but look longer and you can feel the stirrings she is experiencing, possibly for the first time.
I would hang this in a minute. I can imagine Tolkien having this painting in mind as he developed the Shire. Posted by: JTB at June 05, 2026 09:52 AM (yTvNw) 122

The oddest thing about Genghis is he fell in love with a woman who was then abducted by a neighboring tribe and forced to "marry" a warrior in that tribe.
Genghis got together a rescue operation but it took a year or so and when he did get her back she was pregnant. He raised that son as his own though the son's loyalty was always weak because everyone, including him, knew biologically he wasn't. Note he didn't adopt Borte's son, he just pretend the boy was biologically his. Posted by: 18-1 at June 05, 2026 09:58 AM (sKqQm) 145

And Canada's AI strategy is OUT!! Probably literally. Kate at smalldeanimals had this tweet.
bu/ac @buperac AI in Canada lost before it even got started. They literally are trying to get AI to give a Land acknowledgement before any session. Here are 6 statements that show how Canada already blew AI like we all knew it would. 1. “The Government of Canada commits to applying Gender-Based Analysis Plus in a meaningful way across policy design, skills development, innovation, and governance to ensure that AI reflects our values, protects those most impacted, and leads to outcomes that are safe, inclusive, and beneficial for all Canadians.” 2. “Canadian AI must support, reflect, and project Canadian culture, which includes our customs, our history, and our heritage. Canadian voices, languages, communities, and knowledge must also be represented in how AI systems are designed, built, and used.” 3. “support Indigenous self-determination over how AI is built and used in Indigenous contexts, and build domestic capacity to address the specific harms Indigenous Peoples face.” Time to get back to AI while it's still useful up here. The Song of the Lark
Jules Breton The Art Institute of Chicago April 14, 2025 Did you know that Jules Breton’s "Song of the Lark" was deemed the most popular painting in America in a poll conducted in 1934? In this evocative work, a young peasant woman stands silently in the flat fields of the artist’s native Normandy as the sun rises, listening to the song of a distant lark. Not only was the painting popular with the public, but it was also Eleanor Roosevelt’s favorite work of art. On view in Gallery 222. Image: Jules Adolphe Breton. "The Song of the Lark," 1884. But that’s a side show and they’re not really leaving California it’s a tax shelter. In reality the people moving out of Cali are on average the middle class who have been priced out. That Uhaul statistic proves that point. Wealthy people don’t rent uhauls to move. San Francisco is minting more millionaires than ever before. If, IF convicted, expect riots. Posted by: tubal at June 05, 2026 10:46 AM There won't be. Everyone knows this kid f*cked up. None of the race baiters have been here, nor will they. The protesters outside the court are in the ones. This is not your son's George Floyd or Trayvon Martin. National news will barely blip when the jury comes back in 2 hours with a guilty verdict. The only way to protect from ID theft is to notify and have credit reporting agencies lock your credit information. These 'protection' agencies are more of an alert.

Karmelo Anthony moved to 'undisclosed location to ensure his safety,' family reps say, April 2025
He's been residing in an undisclosed location under house arrest with a leg monitor since being released on a $250,000 bond. Lesser or Reduced Murder Charges or Manslaughter - the sentence is 2 to 20 years in prison. Criminally Negligent Homicide (a state jail felony), punishable by 180 days to 2 years in a state jail facility. House arrest for a year - where you know he's been an angel - and then maybe he gets the minimum. (He was just a child & it just happened!) Where's Whig and the others that are quite knowledgeable? I haven't read it in ages, but Willa Cather's book "Song of the Lark" is named for this painting. The description of the main character seeing this painting in the museum, and her reaction and artistic awakening due to the painting, is gorgeous. Written as only Willa can. From wiki: "The Song of the Lark is a novel by American author Willa Cather, written in 1915. It ... tells the story of a talented artist born in a small town in Colorado who discovers and develops her singing voice. Her story is told against the backdrop of the burgeoning American West in which she was born in a town along the rail line, of fast-growing Chicago near the turn of the twentieth century, and of the audience for singers of her skills in the US compared to Europe. Thea Kronborg grows up, learning herself, her strengths and her talent, until she reaches success. The title and first edition cover art comes from an 1884 painting of the same name by Jules Breton, part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago."
