Hi, I’ve been a long time reader, mostly lurking. I sent in a picture of Huey a while back that got posted here. I adopted him from a shelter 13 years ago and he has gotten me through a lot of dark times. I lost him to cancer yesterday. He was the most gentle and sensitive soul. He didn’t chase squirrels and rarely barked. I never needed a leash with him, he always stayed by my side. Everyone who met him fell in love with him.So sorry that you lost your wonderful Huey this week. He looks just like you describe him. Keep in touch. ![]() This is Yuki, my sweet American Eskimo dog. She was nearly 15, but I had to let her go this past Tuesday. Her heart was strong, but her body just gave out. I didn’t want to do it, but now she’s out of pain. I might not be around for the Pet Thread, so am just mentioning here that on Tuesday I had to put my poor 15-year-old American Eskimo dog to sleep. She had leg and kidney problems and was in constant pain; I wanted her to stay, but it would have been too selfish. I feel awful. Afternoon, Pet People,
MP4, Nan, and TC: Honor your long-time friends by recalling them as they were. I wish I could find the Nero Wolfe line where NW tells Archie, or someone else, that he does just that with friends who have passed, and how it honors them. You'll miss them every day, yes, but you can remember them every day as well. I too remember all my cats, warts, stubborn attitudes, and loving purrs all together. My ex-father-in-law had two American Eskimos when we visited him in Denver in late '82. He would tell them, when he wanted them to get a move on, "Mush! Mush! Oatmeal!"
As for Tutti Fruitti, she looked like a great beauty, and I'll bet she knew it too. TC, Huey sounds like the kind of dog to win over people who don't usually like dogs! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 04, 2026 03:48 PM (wzUl9) 6

Greetings one and all. Domo's trip to Urgent Care went well. Most of the nail is gone but there is enough left that it might grow back. The funny thing is that he lost a nail on that same paw a while back so it looks like he's flipping you off. But that would not be of Dude so I know he's not doing that.

Moron-Adjacent animals: Maple looks like she'd love to chase a ball and is just waiting for a hooman to produce one.
This week, I saw my own pet-adjacent animal. Aside, that is, from the long smooth short-haired grey ("blue") cat who visits nearly every day for some dry food. On Thurs. afternoon I happened to go out to the car, and spotted an opossum curled up by the curb. He seemed listless and peered around at me as if his neck hurt to turn it. Not that I know much about opossums. I went back about two hours later, and he was still there, quite still, as if he had passed on to the Great Marsupial Beyond. The next morning, early, long before any city employees could have come by to remove him, I saw that he was gone. Was he just doing the "playing possum" routine the previous evening? I'd like to think so. They are very primitive-looking creatures, aren't they? As if God did a first draft of the cat, looked it over, and said, "Come on. I can do better than *that*." One of our "indoor only" cats managed to get out for about 24 hours and one thunderstorm.
Now that she has been "rescued" back into the house, she is essentially velcroed to me. If I stop moving, the cat is on me in less than 30 seconds. I believe that in her meows she is claiming to have PTSD far worse than any vet that did two tours of duty of Vietnam. She is most displeased when I express skepticism regarding her claims. Big black Stirling is here with me, sprawled on a folded blanket on the back of the couch. Little grey Dagny is nowhere to be seen, and I've checked all the closets and her sunny spot, the window in the bedroom. Probably she's in her cave under the bed. Both are doing well, having passed their fourth birthdays in good health.
Dagny is my fourth Siberian. Aside from her sort of standoffish ways, she is the most *normal* of them all. A Kipling "I am the cat who walks by himself" type, she is. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 04, 2026 04:06 PM (wzUl9) 16
Joyenz, if you're here: I've shifted the cats over to the Feline Pine stuff. Seems to work well for them -- and me. Yesterday I dumped out the "sawdust," and while it was a couple of inches deep in the pan, it seemed to weigh less than the same of the clay stuff. And I did not have to clean the pan laboriously the way I did with the clumping clay. If I get them a stainless steel pan, I'll bet it will be even easier!
When I have my house, I plan to have two pans for them, one in a bathroom or laundry room, and one in the basement. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 04, 2026 04:09 PM (wzUl9) 17

I was out planting cabbages this morning, and while I was digging holes for the plants, my girl kitten, Becca, came over and carefully squatted over one of the holes and peed. Which was fine, but then she filled the hole in again.

Beautiful Moronimals! Condolences going out to those whose pets have departed this life.
Currently visiting my Sis, who has a Labradoodle and two cats here in Vancouver. Dog is named Rocky, and is a very friendly fellow. He had a ride in my car down to the tire shop, where I had a flat fixed. It is a beautiful day here, sunny and about 60 degrees. Gardens and trees all blooming like mad. The pet pictures were also really nice.
Seperately, my experiments are going well. Horror movies, no matter how disturbing are about 20% less scary with a cat laying in your lap. Even more so if they're purring. Ralphy is better. I'm holding him as he goes down steps. I think that's best. Posted by: Stateless - He ain't heavy, he's my dog. Old, but full of life. at April 04, 2026 04:14 PM (Sco7b) 24

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at April 04, 2026 *** My boyhood cat Rusty, indoor and patio only, got lost at one point for about two and a half days. We were afraid he'd gotten into the shop whose back door opened into our patio and then onto the street. My mother, brother, and I searched around the block and beyond for a long time. We were beginning to believe he was gone for good. Then, early on the third morning, there he was at the kitchen door, meowing to come in. He was starved, but unhurt. He probably got into that shop and then hid in terror of strange people for all that while. He was very pleased to be back and never disappeared again. The CDS must have sensed an upcoming vacancy. There was a cute ginger cat on the front porch last night. I went outside to check the weather, and was looking up at the clouds. And when I looked down, this orange cat was just sitting there, staring at me from the bottom of the steps. I went into the house and got it some food.

Are cats aware of colors? I have a new rug, Iranian but tribal rather than formal pattern--if you looked at it you might think it was Navaho. Shades of camel to orange. Georgie has decided to live there! He crawls under it, pulls it over him, sleeps stretched out. And he is all but invisible, he melds in so well! In the middle of the night I have to be vewy vewy careful.

On Tuesday, I walked by the Pet Sense store in the strip mall near my house. There was what looked like a travel bag at the front door. I was getting my walk in before taking my dad to a doctor’s appointment. Anyway, turned out it was a cat in a fabric carrier. It was a very pleasant day and the store was going to open within the hour. I assumed that someone was just dropping the cat for grooming before heading to work.
The next day I went in to check and make sure that the animal was okay. I showed the young lady the picture I’d taken the morning prior. She said that the cat was left there and pregnant. I was furious. I’m not a cat person and I can’t take care of a pet right now, but I’m going to go back this Monday and give them cash to pay for the animal’s expenses. I wish people wouldn’t get a pet, and then bail on the responsibility of having one. Humans can be real cruel jerks. Posted by: Unkaren at April 04, 2026 04:27 PM (OTOad) 39

Posted by: Wenda at April 04, 2026 *** I'm not sure. Seems I've read that cats are not as color-blind as dogs. Certainly the felines all seem to know where they look the best, or the places that, when they lounge or curl there, their humans go "Awwww!" more often. OT, but the "Ace TV" channel is showing a 1958 episode of Mike Hammer w/ Darren McGavin. Sharp and clear, but no closed-captioning. Of course actors actually spoke their lines then instead of mumbling.

Hooray for the Pet Thread, the furriest thread of the week. So sorry to see such fine pets passing on.💔
Feral farm cat news: Little Rascal, whom we think is the mama of the getting-bigger-all-the-time kittens (who remain shy and elusive), was getting rather rotund, but then suddenly this week she is skinny again. We've looked around the tin barn but haven't seen any signs of new kittens. It's early yet. Daisy the feisty Oklahoma Malinois, is pretty smart. Had a much-needed heavy drought-breaking storm night before last. Yesterday morning, I got up and Daisy was there at the back door, as she often is, to go outside first thing. I warned her it was pretty wet out there. Opened the door, and she looked out but didn't even poke her nose out. Nope, nope, nope, she turned around and went back to bed. Domestic indoor farm cat news: Ony, the old yellow-eyed black cat, just keeps rolling along. Getting on in years, so, glad to see. She is very vocal in demanding food and "requesting" her litter box be cleaned. Enjoys lying in bed with us, and sitting in my lap when I'm at the computer. And, that's the critter report from Webworks Acres. Posted by: mindful webworker - pandemonium! at April 04, 2026 04:36 PM (/rhF0) 46
Yesterday heard what sounded like a death fight on the deck. Turns out the dogs had stranded our resident squirrel on the side of the garage, which the squirrel traverses to get to the bird feeders. Piper was screaming like she was getting kicked by a moose. Luckily, the squirrel eventually went around the corner out of reach of said dogs, and everyone calmed down for a bit. It was 15 minutes of noise as if we were torturing both dogs. I wondered what the neighbors might think, but then, I decided I just didn't give one fat rat's backside what they think.

As an aside:
Owney (ca. 1887 – June 11, 1897) was a terrier mix[1] adopted in the United States as a postal mascot by the Albany, New York, post office about 1888. The Albany mail professionals recommended the dog to their Railway Mail Service colleagues, and he became a nationwide mascot for nine years (1888–1897).[2] He traveled over 140,000 miles throughout the 48 contiguous United States and around the world as a mascot of the Railway Post Office and the United States Postal Service. He was the subject of commemorative activities, including a 2011 U.S. postage stamp.[3] Pic at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owney_(dog) Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at April 04, 2026 05:29 PM (XeU6L) 68

"The actual sex is brief, but then they stand on the deck looking satisfied, for up to 20 minutes."
