THE MORNING RANT: Following SNAP Restrictions on Junk Food, Pepsico Cuts Prices Due to Softening Consumer Demand

Some basic economic truths are playing out in the junk food market – the market where Pepsico engages in commerce. Much of its revenue has been in the form of redistributed taxpayer money, which passes through government to the recipients of what was once called “food stamps.” The recipients of SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) have historically spent considerable amounts of their federal food assistance on Doritos, Mountain Dew, and other low-nutrition foods sold by Pepsico.

But thanks to President Trump and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., that is changing, as documented in a piece of mine from early January (“Thanks to MAHA, Several States Just Implemented Bans on Using SNAP Benefits for Junk Food” in which I wrote “the USDA granted individual states the authority to implement waivers to federal regulations, thus allowing state-level determination of food products which may be considered ineligible for federal SNAP benefits.”

It didn’t take long for Pepsico to feel the pinch. By early February, the company was finding itself needing to cut prices in response to slowing sales.

But a few months earlier when SNAP recipients were still spending government money, Pepsico was able to steadily increase prices. Now that those same consumers are forced to buy Fritos and Cheetos using their own money, they have suddenly become price conscious.

In the media reports about Pepsico dropping prices, there is no discussion about the lost SNAP business. There is, however, an acknowledgement that the company had been very aggressive in raising prices at a rate well in excess of inflation. Suddenly, Pepsico finds itself having to cut prices by a rather significant 15%.

PepsiCo is lowering the prices of its Cheetos, Doritos, Lays and other snack brands by up to 15%, saying it wants to bring "relief" to consumers facing an affordability crunch.

The move comes amid a pullback in demand from consumers after PepsiCo instituted a series of price hikes. In the fourth quarter, PepsiCo increased beverage prices by 7% in North America, while its snack prices were up 1%.

So Pepsico raised prices in the fourth quarter (October, November, December) and then in January came “a pullback in demand from consumers.” Coincidentally, this pullback in demand occurred exactly when the SNAP restrictions commenced.

As Lauren Chen stated on Twitter/X, “SNAP no longer subsidizes buying junk food, and now the price of junk food is dropping. Could you imagine if we applied this principle to college? Or healthcare?” Yep, everything we subsidize with taxpayer money has the effect of driving the price of that product higher.

Peter Schiff had an excellent post on Twitter/X last week expanding on this subject:

PepsiCo spent $2.8 million last year lobbying to keep junk food eligible for food stamps. Then RFK got 18 states to ban SNAP purchases of soda, candy, and processed snacks.
Within a week, PepsiCo cut Doritos, Lay's, and Tostitos prices by up to 15%. The CEO blamed "affordability." But the timing tells the real story.
• Frito-SNAP is a $100 billion-a-year program. According to the USDA: 20 cents of every SNAP dollar goes to junk food.
• Frito-Lay products appeared in 7.2% of all SNAP shopping trips.
The moment the government stopped subsidizing demand, PepsiCo had to compete on price. No regulation. No price caps. No antitrust probe. The subsidy disappeared, and the market corrected overnight.
Now consider that this same pattern — government money in, prices up — plays out in college tuition, healthcare, defense, and every other industry with a guaranteed government buyer.
Federal spending is nearly a quarter of the entire economy. All of it inflating prices. All of it eroding your purchasing power.

When corporations and their executives made a hard-left political turn in the early 21st century it puzzled me, because the Democrats they allied with were not the party of free enterprise. But I’ve since come to realize that much of corporate America now rejects free enterprise too, and instead wants government to act on its behalf in redistributing money from taxpayers to corporations.

Be it SNAP benefits for junk food or EV credits for auto manufacturers, the Trump administration is putting an end to the corporatist business model and its parasitic attachment to taxpayer wallets.

With “affordability” such a visible political issue, and with the Pepsico case-study showing how consumer prices can be reduced, Republicans need to aggressively focus on cutting the government subsidies that result in higher consumer prices.

45 Mumble mumble years ago, when I was in grad school and we had babies, Mrs. SoCon and I were on food stamps for a year. What astounded me was that our food budget went up. It didn't supplement our spending, it replaced and elevated our food budget for that year.

Now, we had been frugal as heck and always cooked from scratch, because we had to. But it was amazing to be able to buy meat on advertised specials that week rather than only look at the discounted items because it was at/after its best buy date.

I'm grateful for that year on food stamps, and I won't apologize for it because we used the program as intended. But that's also why I have zero issues with reforms that limit the types of food you can buy.

I know for a fact my kids never were taught any of that stuff. They still don't get financial basics.

Notice how PepsiCo announced these price cuts right when the Super Bowl is coming up? They saw the writing on the wall that more and more people are picking store brands and they want to make themselves look better before the game so people buy their snacks

junk food is the new cigarette/alcohol. When you've had a bad day, feeling down, want to "treat you self", etc. Its a "cheap" way to indulge in dopamine.

One of the reason obesity & poverty hang out together. When life kinda sucks & you cant take a vacation to escape, then you "escape" through food.

Buying it at a corner store or supermarket is a ripoff but buying the giant bags at costco for 5 bucks is a deal!!

I still love Doritos and buy them occasionally, but I'm not loyal to them the way that I once was. They lost it. I don't think this is enough.

They’re getting ahead of the GLP-1’ers. With oral GLP-1’s around the corner maybe they’re making the product more enticing.

Everyone knew when food stamps cut out junk food that the price of junk food would come down. This isn't a surprise. (Only mention of SNAP, no responses lol)

We actually had about a week of basic economics in our world history class in the early '80s in my podunk Michigan high school. It was a series of short films (or filmstrips) done from the perspective of small-business owners, IIRC.

Not that any of it really stuck with me then, but still.

I might have the occasional dessert once in a while...likely once the cycling season is well under way.

The owners doubted it could hold 10 people and all that gear, much less make it to Cuba on its single engine.

Third, the regime has produced no evidence of anything. No photos of the boat or gear. No access to those injured. No witnesses. As Marco Rubio said yesterday, we don't believe anything they say until we can verify it independently. The U.S. Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security are looking into the matter.

I remember visiting Padre Island with a geologist a while back, and he was saying how insane it is that people are building these big permanent structures on it. (hotels, etc) He said there's been barrier islands along that coast since the jurassic, and when you examine the geological record you find lots of times where the entire island has been picked up and moved a mile or two in a single night. I said how often? He said "well geologically, all the time, at least once every thousand years or so. But it's gonna happen sooner or later."

Your probably aware of the shifting sands of the Kill Devil Hills. When the Wright Brothers flew there they were well over 100' tall. After one of the hurricanes raked the area that beach is now about 100 yards or less.

Rotisserie chickens are a great deal and beat the pants of junk food/fast food. You can feed a family of four with one, or stretch it for several days for a single person.

Chips went the year before that.

This year I have given up sweets (so far).

I might have the occasional dessert once in a while...likely once the cycling season is well under way.

But the chips and soda are never getting added back. I barely even think about them anymore.

Good on you. I managed to give up sweet soda, although substituting La Croix for when I really want some texture in my beverage, it's a smaller amount without sugar craving driving it. Similarly, swapping out coffee (which I love) for tea (which I tolerate) has made sleeping easier.

I got my junk food down to those individually wrapped Dove dark chocolates some time ago, and I don't know if I can ever bear to give them up completely.

I guess when you're on EBT/SNAP or whatever it's called, a loss of 25 cents is no big deal.

It often makes it possible for me to wheel that paid-for cart inside, shop and leave, put the cart back into that corral, and get a free quarter for my efforts. Ha, ha.
