Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thanks to MAHA, Several States Just Implemented Bans on Using SNAP Benefits for Junk Food; also, A Friend of the Blog Is Running for Statewide Office in Nevada![]() 18 states have taken advantage of this opportunity, and the first junk food prohibitions on SNAP benefits were implemented on January 1, 2026. Those states were Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia. “Soda, candy cut for many SNAP users starting January 1. What states are affected?” [USA Today – 12/30/2025] Millions of SNAP recipients are about to face new limitations on what they can use the federal assistance program to buy, including bans on soda, energy drinks and candy, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "The Trump Administration is leading bold reform to strengthen integrity and restore nutritional value within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program," the USDA said in a statement about the upcoming changes.Should the federal government be telling people what food products they can and cannot consume? Of course not. Individuals can spend their own money on whatever they want. But the taxpayers who are funding SNAP have every right to demand that welfare money not be used on junk food. "Every American who wants to eat a donut ought to be able to eat it or drink a Coke," Kennedy said in early 2025. "But the federal taxpayer should not be paying to poison our children. And we're going to end that."13 more states will be rolling out various junk food bans on SNAP benefits later this year, including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida, Arkansas, Idaho, Hawaii, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Companies that have come to rely on the taxpayer-subsidized SNAP revenue stream are not happy. “Big Sugar Ramps Up Lobbying Efforts as SNAP Soda Ban Spreads” [Bloomberg Government – 7/30/2025] Food and beverage influence groups boosted lobbying efforts as more than a dozen states seek to block federal food aid recipients from using benefits to purchase sugary products. The American Beverage Association, which lobbies for Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc., and other non-alcoholic drink makers, spent $1.7 million in the first half of 2025—more than double its outlay during the same period last year.Grocery chains also lobbied hard to keep revenue from the taxpayer subsidization of junk food rolling in. A report by the National Grocers Association argued that prohibiting SNAP users from purchasing junk food would cost grocers about $1.6 billion initially, and another $759 million going forward. Apparently, a dollar spent on milk instead of soft drinks hits the income statement differently. Even if I weren’t still upset at PepsiCo and Coca-Cola for their left-wing activism during the great awokening, I would still find it offensive that these prominent corporations are fighting so hard to be on the receiving end of redistributed taxpayer wealth. Eighteen states placing restrictions on the use of SNAP benefits to purchase junk food is a great start. Many more need to join this health initiative. If this type of slave labor offends our sensibilities when it occurs in Georgia, why is it acceptable for manufacturing that is outsourced to China to use the same labor system? The acceptance of slave labor anywhere in our supply chain makes the domestic acceptance of slavery possible. Even the use of foreign children as slave labor is becoming disturbingly common again in the United States. Last summer, a raid on illegal labor at a California marijuana farm resulted in the detention of 10 minors, some as young as 14, all foreign nationals, and some of whom were “unaccompanied.” There are more delicate terms that could be used, but the simple fact is that these children were slaves, living on a marijuana plantation, and being held as chattel by the property supervisor. This article is not behind a paywall. I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

++++ Yup. "Public assistance" - if we're to have it - *must* come with strings attached, preferably a lot of them. Staying on "public assistance" should *not* be the goal, getting off of it should be. If being on it is necessary for you but unappealing, you'll be more inclined to take steps to get off of it. We should return to a biblical method of "SNAP": those in need should be bussed to farmer fields to glean the unharvested bits. And, sure, they can collect bits and pieces of harvested animals. If you don't even want to do that level of work - collecting the food and then cooking it - then, honestly, I don't care if you starve.
As an interim step, the government should return to purchasing staples and handing them out to those currently on SNAP. "Here's your cabbage. Here's your cauliflower. Here's your broccoli. Here's your tripe. Now go feed yourselves." Posted by: GWB at January 09, 2026 11:13 AM (SpLbr) 44

We tend to "mind our own business" while the left is very interested in getting all up in ours. That a problem.
The ubiquitous "Coexist" moniker isn't about "all of us getting along." It is about us, bending to the left so as to not be constantly harassed. They want you to coexist with them, under their terms. There's no middle ground. If left unchecked, hard, they'll likely subsume the country. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 09, 2026 11:18 AM (NwnyJ) 65

A Denver food pantry does this. They provide nutrition and cooking classes to teach people how to make smart and nutritious choices, stretch meals, etc. They also work hard to stock up with nutritional food, such as trade bakery items from a grocery store with another food bank for fruits/veggies. Very creative. Best part is this not a government program. Didnt food assistance start out as boxes of food from the ag department. Cans of peanut butter, some kind of cheese, some surplus grain, probably beans, maybe some canned meat.
This notion that it is wrong to prevent SNAP from being used to buy anything that happens to have calories because 'picking on poor people' is horseshit. Probably young folks and then wine and granola moms who want their kids to have the nutritional advantage over folks that need assistance are the only ones who really oppose letting someone buy gallons of soda pop with those bennies. If people learn the basics of cooking they can eat cheap. But it takes some time and effort. It’s easier to complain about evil Republicans than spend a few hours a week cooking.
If we still want to allow SNAP beneficiaries to get beef, give them the cheapest cuts, like chuck and brisket. They require learning how to cook them properly so they aren't tough. Guess what. I learned, and I have the money to eat filet mignon should I so choose. If you're really hungry, you'll learn. Otherwise, I don't care. Posted by: Archimedes at January 09, 2026 11:21 AM (Riz8t) 74
Well, I assume so, but after DOGE I am left wondering if there is any food bank and other "private" charity that isn't getting some government money.. . . . You can also consider a handful of almonds, or sliced apple drizzled with peanut butter powder mixed with water to make it drizzerable. Let’s rework your breakfast, though. Stop with the oatmeal package and do actual real oatmeal. You can make overnight oats for time so you cut your sugar even more and increase your portion for the same calories. Very nice.
Where I've seen problems in banning sugary drinks is that it usually includes prohibiting the purchase of juices, juice boxes for children and/or sometimes for the elderly. It can affect school lunches programs. (I think PA may even have round the clock food programs for children of certain families and there's programs such as Meals on Wheels.) It can even affect where people migrate to. (See Philly's Soda Tax that caused quite a few SNAP users to move into different districts, counties, states where they had easier, more walkable access to grocery stores v. convenience stores at gas stations.) I have no idea how it works now, but years ago parents or guardians received coupons for milk, orange juice, cheese, some cereals, maybe a few other routine items but nothing for nonfood household supplies, hygiene items, or cleaning products. Sometimes that encourages users to trade or sell off SNAP benefits for cold cash, laundry detergent, diapers, etc. (In other words, it contributes to fraud.) Also, I'd rather have those trying to stay off of certain street drugs drinking energy drinks than shooting up under the tree on my front lawn. Posted by: Helena Handbasket at January 09, 2026 11:32 AM (ULPxl) _______ For grocery stores in poorer neighborhoods (and even in some not-poor neighborhoods), the percentage of their sales through SNAP/EBT is probably over 75%. There's a Western Beef supermarket in the South Bronx that I occasionally shop in. Of the 100s of people I've seen paying over the years, maybe a dozen didn't use EBT. Incidentally, despite being in a bad neighborhood, the WB has almost no security, nothing is locked up or hard to reach, and it's quiet clean and well stocked. I always wondered how this was possible, as most stores in bad neighborhoods had everything on lockdown. Then I found out that WB is owned by a notorious mafia family. 82 Not sure how true it is but I’ve read that Americans throw out about 1/4 of the food we buy. Either from going past expiration dates, throwing out leftovers, buying too many ingredients for meals and then throwing out what’s not used, etc.
I know at my house we certainly do waste a ton of food. I will admit same here - mainly throwing out leftovers, but produce going beyond usability is also an issue with us. The problem, which is the first step in solving, is J will go to the store and see things that look and sound interesting, and then I will do that as well. Or a farmers market, specialty store, what have you. Or on the night of our preplanned meal, J will not be feeling it and will order food (at least not burgers, typically Thai or Napalese and he knows very precisely what I will eat and what I won’t). Poke bowls are another thing. Anyway, it’s exactly what Elric noted, I know I live a privileged existence, and not in the way the left has usurped it. I am sure if I was on my own with my kid, this would look very different. Posted by: Piper at January 09, 2026 11:49 AM (11JP3) 208

They’re all do this. Because they all have under the table side gigs and plenty of money. I’m convinced 90% of all welfare spending is for people who don’t need it. SNAP users can generally buy potato chips, corn chips, pretzels, popcorn, cheese puffs, nuts, crackers, cookies, donuts, and more. OTOH, SNAP users cannot buy toothpaste or mouthwash benefits because they are considered personal hygiene/household items, not food. 153 I'm still amazed at people willing to divulge their medical history on the open internet.
Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons ======= I've shared my history with a bunch of doctors, with the insurance company, with nurses, with Epic management system, etc. I am sure that all the insurance companies share with each other including life, property, car, and so on. So mentioning it here risks boring other people but not so much anyone can employ it against me. The modern era is an era where privacy is largely an illusion unless you want to go live in the woods, off grid, as a hermit. Flock cameras and automatic license plate readers plus your cell phone track you everywhere, most big businesses now have face recognizing tech as do big sporting venues, etc. Your bank records and other financial information is on tap for local cops without your say so and that goes for your call records, texts, emails, and posts as well. And databrokers sell every bit of information that you ever share to get a product warranty, service for cars, etc., the apps on your phone collecting all sorts of info, your browsing history, and that leaves out dataleaks from shitty companies. A gram scale is very useful at tracking calories, and the Nutrition Facts label.
The truth is, humans don’t need a heck of a lot of food to sustain themselves. This number goes down further as we age, or become more sedentary too. The “2000 calorie” itself RDA is some kind of mythical Unicorn type person who dutifully jogs 5 miles after work every day. At the very least, older sedentary people can get obese on those kind of numbers. If you keep track of your intake, you’ll soon discover your own personal metabolic rate. “If I eat this much I lose/maintain/gain” It is remarkable what a close run thing this is, and it isn’t very much. It takes permanent, lifelong changes to the way we approach our “diet”. It is not a temporary thing. I settled into one meal a day because I like large satisfying meals. It works for many. There is no way around calorie restriction, one way or another. Nobody wants to do that, and of course it shows. Rampant obesity, metabolic syndrome and eventually, full blown Type 2 diabetes. It isn’t too much to ask that those depending on the kindness of strangers for the very fiber of their being stay within the height and weight chart. There's a post on Reddit (of all places) that lays out a timeline of decisions the woman who was killed in MN the other day made.
The gist of it is that she had a kid(s) who relied on her. Instead, she opted to leave them wherever they were that day and participate as an agitator at an anti-ICE protest. She was (allegedly) the lead instigator for that event, being filmed by her wife. While in her SUV she could have stopped, opened the door and got out. She chose.... poorly. There were a lot of points in time where she could have, if she wanted to, stopped what she was doing. But didn't. There shouldn't be an ounce of sympathy for this woman. Good nutrition is wonderful but unfortunately, high potassium and/or low sodium with certain BP and/or blood thinner meds is a serious problem.
High potassium foods tend to be very nutritious and it's difficult at times to plan meals without a lot of potassium therein. Low sodium is common when trying to eat well and drink ample water for hydration. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at January 09, 2026 12:02 PM (NFX2v) 284
