Gotta watch 'em

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

We see a lot of videos about cute baby goats here at AoSHQ. I think that this video provides some good cautions concerning getting baby goats yourself.

One thing that I noticed right away is that this woman keeps her guardian dogs on a lead on her own property. This is not because they are apt to attack people. It is because they are apt to wander off to patrol what they THINK is their territory.

She adores her guardian dogs and their protective qualities (I may have seen this in a different video). One new sheepherder decided on Great Pyrenees to guard his sheep because in a study underway, that was the only breed which had never bitten anyone.

You may recall that in our own neighborhood we noticed what seemed to be a Great Pyrenees dog wandering in fields near us, and alternately visiting a house which had just been vacated. We though it had been abandoned, and maybe it had. It disappeared for a couple of weeks, re-appeared briefly, disappeared again and then re-appeared but ran off again when DH tried to feed it. Maybe someone in the neighborhood is feeding it more regularly. Hard to tell. We still leave dog biscuits for him when we see him (or her).

Anyway, back to the goats. First of all, they are not sheep:

Meet The PetMorons

GOLDENDOODLE JASPER.jpg

We lost our 14 year old Goldendoodle, Jasper, last week.
We brought him home at six weeks old, a jet black ball of fluff and pure energy. He was super smart, exceptionally athletic, an alpha personality, but just as sweet as he could be.

The last year was hard on him health wise, but he retained his never quit attitude, even when his body gave out on him. Best Dog Ever. RIP, old man.

onthemark329

He sounds and looks like an absolutely wonderful dog. So sorry that you have lost him. Thanks for sending in the photo and thoughtful tribute, so we can remember him along with you.

New Bird for the Pet Thread

We have bird feeders on the porch to entertain MegaRoy, over the years, it's sometimes a racoon feeder, or a possum feeder.  Sometimes it's a red-tailed hawk feeder.  Neighbor two houses up, had a sweet little kitty that would hang out and just be friendly with MegaRoy.  This is their 2nd kitty Dominoe, big honking maine coon mix tomcat.  Very skittish, wants a handout of crunchy chow, but shrinks back and hisses in fear of the big scary hoomans.  He was taunting the neighbor dog one house up from his own home.

BifBewalski

So Dominoe is someone's kitty, but he's YOUR bird! PetMoron adjascent, I would say. What would other members of The Horde say?

2 Condolences on Jasper, always heartbreaking to lose a cherished pet.
My cherished pet, is nearly recovered from his surgery and lab said that the margins are clear. He was irritated that he couldn't romp in the snow. But he is otherwise cheery and hanging out with my other doggo.

3 I give "Anne of All Trades" a lot of credit. She got a goat, found it was WAY more difficult than she expected, but she never gave up.

4 Lost my beloved rottylab Sammie the day after thanksgiving. Lymphoma 8 weeks then ...over.

On her wood carved urn, "The best dog ever" is engraved.

That is high praise. Not all of them are.

Sammie was in that club.

Condolences othermark 329.

I am sorry for your loss. It's mystery to see how a little puppy can grow up to be so special.

Posted by: JM in Illinois at January 24, 2026 03:35 PM (yJpvi)

7 My puppy did that when he was about four months old. He would lie on the register because it blew nice cool air. When he stood up and the register came with it, attached to his collar, he came unglued. To this day (he's almost 5) he will not go near the register. I was relieved, because I didn't know how I was going to break him of that habit.

10 There was a Great Pyrenees on our walking route when I was in grade school. It resided in its own front yard and never crossed the boundary (that I saw).

She was smart enough to flop in the grass right at the curb to induce simultaneous belly rubs from three or four 2nd graders!

I think she also considered us part of her flock for protection.

11 Our one outdoor cat has finally decided that 2F is her limit and she has spent the night inside for the last two evenings.

I think we have two more bitter nights coming.

I assume she will think lows above 10F will be perfectly balmy next week, so she can resume her night-time patrols.

12 I'm having trouble getting my girl dog to poop. But to be fair it's cold and there's 4" of snow and I might be uncomfortable about pooping in barefeet in snow with my butt just inches above said snow.

13 Daisy the brilliant Belgian Malinois set a new record for 'doing her bizness' this morning. Don't think she minds the snow too much, but brrrrrr it's cold. She was begging a minute ago to do the usual ball-chasing, but after given a sniff of the outdoors again (and a moment for more biznez), she settled back down on the couch.

BluebirdOfBitterness.com has some fun Caturday posts, including a vid of a cat finding out about snow.

Tried to show it to Ony cat; not sure if she knew what was going on, or made the connection to what's outside right now. She's very much an old housecat.

14 Today, the new cat gets life lessons on snow. I think she may be six months old and we've had little snow this year. She does not believe what she is seeing. She has demanded to go out several times, and then reality sets in. We are barely above negative numbers. At one point, she jumped off the porch and into snow up to her belly. She came back in and laid on the couch for awhile.

She tried again, so I pushed her out and closed the door. Gave her a minute and let her come in. She ran over and used the cat box. Troubles was out in it for awhile but he knows how to deal with snow. I am naming the new cat Patsy. She still needs a trip to the vet so this is good training

I like to take the broom and brush off a 5' x 5' area adjacent to one their normal favorite potty spots.

The two female dogs quickly learn to run right to that patch.

The two male dogs still prefer to write their names in the snow, no matter how deep, when urinating.

I am pretty sure that our two male dogs are both Morons!

18 Afternoon, pet people,

In the Big Snow last January, Miss Linda took little Dagny the triple-coated cat outside in her arms to show her what her ancestral homeland (Siberia) would look like. Dagny, normally so silent we once wondered if she were mute, immediately let out a series of yowls that made it clear that cold wet flakes on her fur and face were Not To Be Borne. It wasn't the wideness of the outside world scaring her, now. We tried her again in much warmer weather and she was quiet and enduring.

We didn't try with Stirling.

21 Sakura got her first visit to the vet today AFAIK. She was very distressed but comported herself well. Confirmed that she was spayed. Vet says she is about 4 years old. Meaning she has survived on the streets along time or was abandoned. Either way an impressive survivor.

And they said was pretty. Tricolor weegies are rather uncommon.

23 Speaking of big black Stiring, he has recenlty rediscovered sleeping on the blanket atop the back of the couch. This red-black plaid microfiber blanket used to be the favorite of the late Chekov D. Siberian. Linda insists on calling it "Chekov's Blanket." I say, "No, it's Stirling and Dagny's now."

Miss Linda brought out Chekov's old polyester-lined pet bed, which he used to keep warm after his shaving in early 2021. So far both cats have steadfastly ignored it. We'll see what happens when the outside temp dips to 24 or so on Monday morning and it's 60 or so inside when I get up in the pre-dawn darkness to turn up the heat.

We had a couple goats on the farm for no good reason. Never turn your back on a goat. Be careful even if you are facing them. Just don't get goats.

36 It looks like Bunny the stray Manx (my brother calls her Manxine) will be entering the domicile soon, depending on how terrible it gets outside. She's got her warming mats and cozy cube, but if we lose electricity (frankly I expect we will for some period of time; it would be close to a miracle if we don't) she's coming in. Publius is so tender-hearted that I don't need to wheedle at all.

She's a sweet cat, but very territorial. Once she came onto the scene, Sammy stopped hanging out. He's been living rough - every time he shows up he's got new wounds on his head. If he had any sense he'd hang out here. He's a big boy and could certainly co-exist here. But, he is not a sensible cat.

Anyhoo, I have great trepidation about bringing Bunny inside. Wondering what's the first thing to be broken as a result of some kind of dustup. I figured, I'll carry her in, show her to Purry and Della, then place her in the bedroom and close the door. I expect there will be a lot of footsie under the door.

I hope everyone gets along.

Abys are great little kitties, Wolfus. They can be very dog-like (according to those who have dogs): they like to play Fetch, will follow you from room to room, and ours would growl if a stranger came to the door. They're long and leggy like the Siamese but are MUCH quieter! They're high-energy cats and they're very pettable, but don't cotton to being picked up. They love to hunt and will bring in anything that dares to come into the yard (we protected ours with a cat-fence): mice, the occasional bird, now and again a praying mantis, butterflies, and on one unforgettable occasion, a bat!

50 41 Carpetweasel is adorable!

Thanks, Fenelon! Gizmo loved to burrow underneath area rugs. She went berserk when a friend of ours gifted us with a hand-loomed carpet from Afghanistan. Not only did she have to sniff every inch of it, she ran all over i, shoved her paws under the edges, and immediately dove right under it. Best kitty toy ever, so far as she was concerned!

52 Added note on goats. I moved to a neglected house on 4 fenced acres a few decades ago. Fence Lines all overgrown. Added one Alpine Goat to three canine pack. Fence lines all neatly groomed by 2 months. So when dogs ran to fence to bark at potential trespassers the goat who tagged along could be easily seen bleating along with barking dogs. The dogs never bit anyone. The goat, however, was a master at head butting vulnerable portions of anatomy of any stranger. Thus the Beware of Goat signs.
