Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Hi, KT, this is Caiwyn from the AoSHQ comments section.

I wanted to share the catio I built over the last month. My cats, Augie (short for Augusta) and Merlin both love watching the squirrels in the back yard. Merlin in particular wants to chase them outside, but his grey coat makes him nearly invisible at night and I don’t want to risk him being hurt. They are both indoor cats.

So to give them more of a taste of the outdoors I built them a catio! It’s 4-foot by 2-foot enclosure just outside the back window, made of 2x4 beams, 3/4-inch plywood shelves, and a large sheet of PetScreen. They access it through the window when it’s open, and it gives them multiple vantage points for watching birds and squirrels. So far they seem to like it!

Very impressive! A sure sign that your cats are loved! Thanks for showing us so many building details.

Hey, KT! This is my golden retriever Finn. He'll be a year old on 11/29, and has grown into a handsome boy. He's currently in full teenage hellhound phase, which we're hoping he'll grow out of soon!--Jordan61

Happy Birthday, Finn! We love you! You don't look like a hellhound.

1. Treat time! Winnie (Left) is thinking that maybe this time she does not have to sit. Kroger (Center) flopped down quickly. I told Rose (Right) to sit and she climbed into bed with Kroger.
To give you an idea of my initial concern, Kroger does *not* share his space very well but for the sake of a Yaky Puff, he was willing to overlook Rose's transgression.

2. Kroger with his new bed and his bear.

3. Winnie (right) deigning to let Cole share a dog bed. With some help from great hoomans. Kroger will share with his bear!

Thanks! I was happy with how it turned out.

And I loved the catio picture. We have a covered patio on our front yard and when we had the cats, we set up a door on a window so they could go in and out. Got funny sometimes when a dog was watching them jump into the house. They thought it was a kitty dispenser.

15 Caiwyn, that is great work! I'm guessing that is a basement or "garden-level" window, since it's so close to the ground. For a standard first-floor window, I suppose one would have to add supports of some kind?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 29, 2025 03:49 PM (wzUl9)

16 Really nice place for the cats, Caiwyn!

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 29, 2025 03:50 PM (DiLbP)

17 Saw that, Joyenz. But she died at home and I think that's how cats prefer to go.

18 I renumbered and added additional catio photos.

Posted by: KT at November 29, 2025 03:51 PM (7vIsy)

19 Oh, wait, Caitwyn, I see that window is just a bit lower than the one next to it, and that the catio has the lower level they can access.

It's just hard to watch. We were trying to arrange a squeeze in at our vet to end her suffering, but she went before I could make the call. My sister was at work and I was taking video to show her Callie's breathing. Turned out to be her last breaths I recorded.

23 Thanks, Fen. It's hard to tell from that first shot since it's only my legs but I was freaking out a bit with Rose landing next to Kroger. Thankfully, the power of Yaky Puff forgives a lot of transgressions.

26 The catio is very cool, my Savannahs would be THRILLED.

The Christmas tree has been procured and set up. Decorating now. The cats are so excited to see a tree in the living room. The dog is panicked, because everything new gives him an anxiety attack for a bit. He went with us to get it and was very brave until they threw it on top of the car. He lost his shizzle then. But he is trying!

Posted by: Piper at November 29, 2025 04:02 PM (OoFl2)

27 My Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are doing well. Big black Stirling is out here in the living room near me, and little gray Dagny is curled up on the bed. She was set to sleep with me, but I discovered I was not meant to nap today. So I got up and had some milk, and here I am.

I guess puppies go through the hellbeast stage just as kittens do. It was why I originally wanted a more settled adult cat, say, two to three years old. Somehow, though, these two kittens won me over -- as kittens will.

30 I put a bunch of old nuts out in the planters on the edge of the deck. Freddie the Freeloader (red squirrel) has discovered them and is beginning to hoard them. Meanwhile, the dogs are watching closely for any possible slip and fall by said squirrel, and occasionally rooting on said behavior. Much squeaking and squealing ensues.

Dogs don't read or watch tv, but they do like the live action shows.

32 Not a pet, but I had a wonderful experience at my friend's house. Our son is looking after their cats while she and her husband are away. The cats tend to take off when someone shows up they don't really know, but we got them all fed and litter boxes cleaned

Anyway. about the non pets. Friend has a lovely deck and nice bird feeders. We saw a female cardinal along with her mate. It always makes me happy to see a male cardinal. I had one dear congregation member who had several elegant tee shirts with cardinals on them. She said it made her think of the Holy Spirit. I think the same.

36 Side note: Three of the greys we were babysitting went home and the other two go home tomorrow. It's going to be quiet with only two greys but we'll manage.

Unfortunately, Kroger has some kind of problem with his legs and he's on crate restriction for a day or two. He is NOT happy about this development in his life.

39 I remember the time years ago I saw a raccoon close up. Relatively close, anyway. I was walking to my car, taking the route that leads by the (now closed and neglected) pool I once used to swim in, when my eye was caught by motion in a tree.

It wasn't a cat as I first thought: It was a raccoon. (He or she) looked like a full-grown one, larger than any house cat. He stared calmly back at me. Naturally I took care not to approach and startle him, and after a few minutes I walked on to my car. When I came back five minutes later he had moved on.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 29, 2025 04:32 PM (wzUl9)

40 Come to think of it, Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 and I did have a raccoon in Lafayette who used to rifle our garbage cans. We'd hear it out there and open the screen door with the lights off, to see the big grey furball and his sparkling yellow eyes.

One of our cats, Mitzi the red tabby, wanted to go out there and fight that thing. She was an average size for a house cat and would have had zero chance. We made sure not to open the screen door!

43 38 Will Kroger's leg issues resolve after being crated for a while, NR Pax, or you have to go to the vet?

We've had him at the vet and the diagnosis was a muscular degeneration. Thankfully it was not osteosarcoma which is a disease that really hates greyhounds for some reason.

Right now, we are trying to manage things with medication and lowering his activity level.

We have a very large front window in this old Victorian house. Seriously, about 5 x 6 ft. I call it the dog tv. We have a large ottoman in front of it, and they love to lie on that with their chins on the windowsill, watching the world go by.

The late red tabby part-Coon, Arizona, had a routine. When I came home after a lengthy period, such as work or a date, he would greet me at the door . . . but he would not let me pet him right away. He'd duck his head away from my hand, while sniffing my legs and shoes. Only when he'd finished doing that, verifying my identity I guess, would he let me pet him.

On the other hand, Marie-Antoinette, the smart black medium-hair, was always there to greet me. Once I came back from a three- or four-day business trip, during which a responsible cat-loving neighbor came in to feed and play with her. I stepped in to see Marie at the far end of the couch. She let out a yowl that was clearly a "Where've you BEEN???" That cat could communicate like nobody's business.

61 This is OT, but I'm posting it anyway.

This morning on the Prayer Thread, I posted a comment that was offensive to Roman Catholic theology. It precipitated responses, of course. I saw that it was neither in my best interests, or those of the blog, to continue the fight, and retreated to lurker status.

So, though as a lifelong adherent of traditional Protestantism, (and I admit that woke has destroyed mainline Protestantism), I stand by my belief, I confess that it was wrong of me to bring it up on the Morning Prayer Thread, which is supposed to be a forum for piety and spiritual comfort.

Therefore, I apologize for my anti-Catholic posts this morning, and I pray that my Roman Catholic friends on this blog will forgive me. It won't happen again.

God bless and be with you all.

Pushed against the flap with my boot, but raccoon kept trying to come in. Lifted the flap to try to push out with my cane, and he still kept coming. Looked a little more, and noticed two or three more raccoons lined up behind him.
Got the plastic door in over the flap before the invasion was complete.

We're nose to nose, trading tongue-licks, her front feet on my tummy. Half her 20-pound weight on me. She's a red-headed tricolor with these amazing razor-thin black lines running in a gibbous-moon shaped curve away from the outside corner of her eyes, across the snow-white features of her upper cheeks, to dime-sized jet black dots and beyond and sbove there's the red, as blazing a red as a celtic warrior's mane.

She stops licking, sniffs my lips, and turns to watch the Wisconsin-Minnesota game on the TV, being played in the snow. She was in snow, up in NW IL, just a few days ago, but now we are in subtropical FL, and there are gators to avoid.
