Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

You may recall that last week, I said that we had a sick pup. Well, on Sunday, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He had been almost deaf for some time and had been developing some problems walking and eating, but then it was like his systems started to go into shut-down, over a rather short period of time. So alarming.

He started having honest-to-goodness seizures while we waited for a room to clear at the emergency vet office. Busy day for them. I think they gave him something for the seizures before it was time for his final farewell. He seemed calm then. He wanted lap time last week, which was not usual for him. Nose in the crook of an elbow or on a neck. He seemed to know.

This is a photo of Little Buddy on an old work table in the back yard in 2014. He liked to eat there, where the other dogs did not go. Sometimes he channeled a meerkat. But he had a minor seizure disorder that made him sort of blank out and we started to worry that he would fall off the table, so we took it down. That's a pomegranate tree in the next door lot hanging over the fence.

Little Buddy 2014.JPG

This is Little Buddy with his biggest friend, Troy. Troy had been a street dog and Little Buddy had been a street puppy. They both had beautiful eyes and soft, floppy ears that kept them from looking too dignified. We lost Troy years ago, and we hope that they are having a nice reunion. Our remaining dog, Curly, looks for his brother when he goes outside. Little Buddy was bigger than Curly, but Curly was the alpha dog. He misses escorting him to dinner.

We hoomans suddenly miss the other dogs we have lost - not just Little Buddy. Farewell, friends.

I had a stray kitten show up in the yard, mostly lurking around for a day, which is not unusual since all the neighbors have cats, but the next day she came in the kitchen door and started eating out of the cat bowl.

I have put flyers out, posted on facebook, left notice with the local vets, the Humane Society and the local cat adoption, and I have had no response.

I know someone really misses her since she is so sweet, but after a week I am starting to hope no one claims her, she has really calmed my other tom kitten down. "calmed down" is a relative term, of course, since they spend most of their play time boiling around the house

We are calling her Becca.

Another sweetie.

Rosie is our rescue Briard. She is sweet natured but full of energy. She just had her 5th birthday. She is vigilantly watching for animals invading our back yard.

Here's a pic of my mini-golden retriever at his second birthday party. Dubby is a very good boy! His "cake" is liverwurst with bacon. He didn"t give me a piece.

7 Afternoon, Pet Folken!

KT, I am sorry to hear about Little Buddy. They're gone too soon, aren't they? I'm sure Troy has met up with his adopted brother and are wondering where you are.

8 Maude was a basset hound on on our block that would come into your yard and eat your dogs food.

I saw her walking down the alley with a whole can of Alpo. Not in the can but the owner had cut both ends out and pushed the whole can out.

9 I had an encounter with a stray cat on my way to the library book sale yesterday.

It was skittish, but not entirely unfriendly.

Fortunately, I only went home with a few more books and not another cat, as I already have 5.

10 kinda sad today at Pet Thread time. A couple of submissions are still waiting for next week.

Happy to see Dubby the Golden Retriever on his birthday, Rosie watching her yard, Becca the Rescue and Purry Mason.

Someone moved out of a house near us and left a big dog resembling a white golden retriever. The day after we lost Little Buddy. He runs from us, but we have been leaving food where he has made a bed in a field.

Posted by: KT at November 22, 2025 03:52 PM (7vIsy)

11 Condolences, K.T. We have a couple of places out back for our late friends; so far, 2 dogs (2009 & 2011) & 3 cats (2010, 2014, & 2023), and just thinking about them brings tears, but also remembered joy.

Thank you so much for the Pet Thread.

12 Oodles of critter excitement at ol' Rancho Webworker lately. (1 of 3)

Understand, we often leave the back porch door open, and the screen door from the porch to outside open. It has one of those magnet-closed screen curtains, so the pets can push through while the bugs are (mostly) kept out.
(Magnet screen at Home Depot link)

🐁That's probably how we got our first live mouse in the house. Looked down and saw the little squeaker runnng by my feet as I sat at the computer. Chased it under a bookshelf in the corner, and then got Ony the old black cat and put her down there.🐈‍⬛ Ran a broom under the shelf and, after some chasing, Ony caught it by the tail. She let it go too soon, but it was near the porch door, so we shooed it out onto the porch. Daisy the mighty Malinois 🐕 then got involved, and didn't catch it, but did get it chased outside. So long, Mickey, and tell your friends how dangerous it is to be in here. (cont)

Posted by: mindful webworker - critter chaos pt 1 at November 22, 2025 03:52 PM (LaTF/)

13 (2) Days later, MiladyJo saw a young squirrel 🐿️ (chipmunk — no squirrel emoji, apparently) inside the screened-in porch, running along the window sills. Ony was on a couch out there, and when the squirrel jumped down, Ony immediately gave chase, out through the open door and across the fenced-in back yard. She came strutting proudly back. So long, Rocky, and tell your family about the monsters in this house.

On Wednesday, Daisy started barking up a storm, more than the usual "leaf! leaf!" bark. Our son M's pal had gone out to the S 40, which he shouldn't've, leaving the pasture gate open. A mama cow and several calves crossed the cattle guard into the living area. 🐄 (black angus emoji not available) Where the grass is just as green, of course. The cattle guard, laid down in my grandfather's day, was flat rails (railroad type) and filled in with nearly a hundred years of silt. Easy walking for the cattle.

14 (3) I would've let Daisy loose to herd them, but she has all the instincts, but lacks the training; we couldn't be sure she'd herd them the right way. MiladyJo, who was dressed for going into town, and I, hopped in the little red truck and started herding them. MJo did get out at one point to wave a stick at the calves to get them moving, but that mama cow, we couldn't be sure if she'd get fiesty protecting the babies, and I have this allergy to getting trampled and gored (she had horns), so it took a little time to get Mama back over to the gate. The little red Nissan, with city slicker tires and rear-wheel drive with an empty bed, got stuck in the mud by the gate at the last moment just as Mama got back across, and I had to have the cowboys give it a short tow the next morning, but mission accomplished, so all was well as we walked back to the house.

Daisy got out the next day and ran out to the pasture to chase some cattle around, briefly. To make up for having to watch us from the house the day before. Didn't get to train her up as a pup, and as smart as she is, she still has a wild and headstrong streak. Wouldn't trade her for anything, though.

Good dog. Good kitty.

15 Several feral cats have spent time here at the farm. I feed them, but none let me get very close to them. Only one would wait for me outside my kitchen window in the morning ... which was kinda nice. They seldom last more than a year or so ... they just disappear.

17 I don't have any pets at the moment. My last two cats lived to be 21 and 19 respectively. I never let them outside so there was no chance of them being run-over, bitten by rabid or infected animals, getting lost by wandering away of any of that stuff. I miss them both but I'm not in a hurry to have another cat. But I still have an ability to connect with them. I had a client once warn me that their cat wouldn't have anything to do with strangers, and 5 minutes later their cat was begging me to pet her. I think cats have an instinct about who does and who doesn't "get" them.

20 My own Killer Kittenz From Outer Space are doing well. Both were napping with me on the bed just now. I've noticed they tend to sleep one on either side of me, as if I am a mountain chain and they are staking out separate territories to the east and west of me.

Stirling has been trying to play a little rough with Dagny. They both still have their claws, of course. But Stirling outweighs Dagny by nearly five pounds, and he has the reach on her with longer forelegs. He corners her next to the couch, or pounces on her out in the open. She's not happy; I hear a faint growl from her and sometimes a bit of a yowl. I break it up with a spritz from a spray bottle or by throwing a pillow at them.

I *think* it's only play -- that Stirling may simply be bored. Most of the time they are fine.

21 My wife has been feeding a feral at her parents' house for several years. It will not allow contact, though it would approach her father when he would sit out in the sun on a nice day. Outdoor cat (obviously) is at least 10 years old and going strong. Wife calls it (don't know its sex) Wild Thing.

22 Greetings and good afternoon! One of the dogs we are babysitting right now is a Greyhound that raced in Ireland. She has a higher prey drive than her sisters or the resident greys. One of the funnier things is that she does not always bark at the tree bunnies. No, no; she has a war scream that announces she has found prey.

OK, it's not cute at 4 in the morning when the turnout is being done but it is kind of funny.

23 Troubles learned last year that the warmest place is under the frost protection. He's under the cover on my fig tree. I'll have to tack it back down. He does like having a little house to hang out in. I put one up for him since he doesn't mess with the possums or stray cats that come to eat on the porch.

26 Crusader, always thought I was a dog person - long ago, went out for a run one evening, encountered a friend walking with her daughter & dog - friend 'warned' me that the dog didn't like strangers, I squatted down, the dog sniffed my hand, and flipped on her back for tummy rubs. Then, after we married, wife accused me of 'alienating the cat's affections' because the cat slept next to me.

28 Kindltot, Becca looks very much like the kitten I rescued from teh steps of the UNO library in 1974. Somebody had left her there with a bowl of milk. I fell for the trap and took her home, where Mom promptly named her "Li'l Bit" and she equally promptly became Mom's cat. At first our incumbent, big red tabby Rusty, hissed at her. After a couple of days, it was as if he realized, "This is a girl, and a kitten!" and accepted her completely. He got brave and would sit out when people came over, while she would vanish.

When he passed away, she spent most of that day walking all around the apartment, calling for him. And when my mother passed, Li'l Bit went into a kind of shock and wouldn't emerge for me. I had almost to trap her to get her home with me. It took her a couple of weeks, until that Christmas morning, to come out and sit in my lap.

A funny, sweet cat, she lived to be about fourteen.

31 Little tricolor L'il Bit had a rocky time with my big red tabby Arizona. AZ did not like other cats; he never did (and hated Linda's Marie-Antoinette some years later). I'd play with each of them separately, feed them in different areas, etc. No problems about the litter box; I only had room for one.

When LB got to Cat Heaven and told Rusty about her adventures, I suspect he went, "Dayum."

34 Ah, feral cats!

Growing up there was a feral Tom in the neighborhood that we named Clint (for Clint Eastwood). Clint had 1-1/2 ears, a broken tail, and maybe 2/3 of his teeth. We started feeding Clint on the front porch, and he would eat while we sat there, but not allow us to touch him initially. Six months later, he not only wanted the food, but would crawl up in our laps wanting headpats. Moral of the story, there is no cat so feral that love won't bring them around.

Big Rusty did the same his first and subsequent Christmases: curled up on the fake "snow" blanket that we wrapped the base of the tree in, to hide the stand. Mom carefully put the more fragile decorations higher up on the tree, but I don't recall him doing any real damage.

Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and I had real trees for three Christmases of Arizona's long life, but again I don't recall any devastation aside from his knocking a few low-hanging plastic ornaments down.

Linda had a black bushy-tailed feral who would show up on a regular basis for outdoor dining, but would never come near us. We speculated that some of my late Wolf's longhair genes were still circulating out there; we've seen a higher number of bushy-tailed and semi-longhaired ferals around here than you might expect. (Wolf had his time as a playboy before I took him in.)

52 Sammie, our wonderful rescued dog, was diagnosed with lymphoma 8 weeks ago.

Out of the blue she lost 11 pounds, almost too quickly to notice. Vet put her on prednisone, and she bounced back, ate voraciously. Gained some weight back.

Alas, she's declining rather rapidly now. Had a vet scheduled for yesterday for the rainbow bridge, but she'd rallied this week, so cancelled.

It is so hard to know when they are ready. This has been a very exhausting month, up all night, explosions from time to time. She's just such a beautiful sweet dog, best we've ever had.

Oh the emotional trauma. *sigh*. Oh how we love our pets.

Can you give us an update on what they are doing at say, of 0200 in the morning, when all cats seem to think "Hey, it's time to start MISCHIEF!!"?

Fall baths and nail trims for Dutchess, Val and Dan today. God love them, they're such good, stouthearted dogs, but they're also 10 years old and showing their age. No longer able to jump in the tub or onto the grooming table, fat and wheezing. But they have good spirits that we hope carries them on for a while longer. Every day is a day of grace.

My cats are usually pretty quiet at night. If anything, I disturb THEM when I get up to answer a call of nature.

Every once in a while Penny or Hexie will get the zoomies in the middle of the night but it's pretty rare.

60 So sorry Derak. Take the time left to cherish and love her. The physical and emotional toil will end. Your memories won't.

Current cat seems to feel like 0200 is the time when she can get on the bedside table and do the "tap, tap, tap" and knock off whatever is on HER TABLE. Usually it's my glasses or cellphone.

I think snowball is in the garage- it is easy to get lost in that room. You never know whether he is sleeping in the Rolls' engine compartment or the Jag's. *laugh*

66 52 Derak It is so hard to know when they are ready.

----- I hate this part of it. We, too, have made appts for the end and then cancelled because the pet rallied.
So hard to get to the decision, and then we question -- Is it the right time?
I don't like to feel like I've stolen any of their days, but I also don't want them to suffer.

67 On a happier note, I put the tree up and have been decorating a bit and Lucy the Fink has yet to destroy anything.

She’s already staked out her spot under the tree.

When I was a kid, we had a dog that thought the Christmas tree was an indoor convenience. Caused a fair bit of mayhem.

69 Crusader, always thought I was a dog person - long ago, went out for a run one evening, encountered a friend walking with her daughter & dog - friend 'warned' me that the dog didn't like strangers, I squatted down, the dog sniffed my hand, and flipped on her back for tummy rubs. Then, after we married, wife accused me of 'alienating the cat's affections' because the cat slept next to me.

Yes! Pet's just know things...or at least some of them do!

70 Thx SockM. I know just how KT is feeling.

I've had to put down 6 dogs in my lifetime and it's a heart ripper every single time. There is no easy about it.

Just once I wish my dog would pass peacefully in the night. Going to the vet to do it just feels like murder.

One time we had a wonderful vet that did house calls, and he put our beloved chocolate lab down in the back yard. It was sooooo much better than the vet hospital. They know!

One lab we had was a real piece of work. She had a tumor wrapped around her heart. It was time. We took her to the vet and I'll be darned, she rallied right when the vet was to do the deed, and she fought him. It was just awful.

Never felt like a murderer more than that day.
I just hate this.

73 I had one dog that died in the house. He'd been showing signs of pain. I gave him his meds and got him to lay in his favorite bed. After taking a shower I came back down and he was gone. And his brother was in the next bed over with a crushed look on his face.

75 All the dogs I have been owned by:

Beauregard (Bobo) the child guardian
Sam the terrier/beagle from hell
Mukluk (aka MUK) the clever one
Wurfie-Dog (the stray that showed up on Christmas Eve)
Sophie the princess
Fair Dinkum Jazzman Louie Armstrong (Louie) Aussie terrier from another planet and failed show dog
Rosie the Beagle (Loud, obnoxious, and raider of the fridge)
RayRay the Amazing, the perfect dog even if he was misshapen
Ruby the beautiful sled dog mix
Piper the idiot sister of Ruby

Ruby and Piper are the current occupants.

The rest are over the bridge and probably trashing everything they can get their little paws on. Some have been gone for 50 years. I miss every one of them.

His current issue is a stinger down from his left hip. He's getting that one shot up in a couple of weeks. I get my shoulder surgery in a couple of weeks, and then get my cataracts removed in January.

At this rate, we will both be entirely MOPAR by the time we see you again.

But I have started the Thanksgiving soiree prep and I have already invited folks for New Years to blow some stuff up, so we are doing just fine and will continue.

Let me know if you intend to stray north anytime.

80 One of our most recent crop of dogs died on my wife's lap and I was forced to put down the other at the vet. He licked me as they started the IV. It was a horrible moment, but the love those dogs gave us over the course of our lives together made it worthwhile.

83 How are all you dog owners doing with keeping your dog fit and trim? Ours, Miss Lily the 6-year-old small-for-breed Welsh Corgi, gets plenty of exercise and eats what we measure out and not one gram more.

She is a ravenous eater, will eat anything, always seems hungry, knows the time of day and when it's time for breakfast and dinner, and spends less than 15 seconds gobbling down the 1/3 cup of Wilderness kibble we put in her dish.

She weighs 19.5 pounds and is all muscle. She loves to lay on her back and get her belly rubbed, and when I do it, I can feel she is tight as a drum.

Our former dog, a Belgian sheepdog bitch, weighed between 37 and 39 pounds her whole long life, we'd put her daily allowance in her dish, and she'd eat when hungry, sometimes leaving a little at the end of the day.

You know the Belgian, right? Same herding subgroup as the drug sniffing war dog malinouix, but with a long black coat. Think all-black well-fed coyote.

But this Miss Lily the corgi, she's a food hound. I just fed her.

84 When I used to put a tree up in the barn it was decorated with origami ornaments so when the cats played in it nothing got broken and we were all happy.

85 Sakura, the stray cat, has a soft spot for a little hungry black cat who comes around. She's territorial about our backyard, but seems to tolerate not just the black khet's presence but its proximity.

Also, since she is a Norwegian forest cat, contemplating changing her name, maybe, to Freya. Opinions?

87 When I worked graveyard, I used to keep the same schedule on my days off. I found that most of my cats were really not that nocturnal. They would crash out at 2 or 3. Jack, my Russian Blue, would stay up with me. The current crop of cats likes to be fed at 4.
