Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

First Dog I Ever Rescued

Dear K.T.,

This guy showed up at the garbage cans by the highway the week before Christmas last year. He followed me home & adopted us.

rescue black 1a.jpg

He was skin & bones, filthy, and full of fleas, ticks & heart worms. I called him Zeke and he was just so grateful for any kindness. After 10 months of good food & lots of love, he’s now 90 lbs. of muscle . . .

rescue black 2A.jpg

He looks great after your TLC!

We think he is an Anatolian Shepherd - Lab mix. Here he is with my Golden, Maggie.

Rescue black w maggie.jpg

Those two look like great friends. Maggie is lovely. Zeke looks big next to her.

You just never know what might show up on your doorstep one day.

Regards,

Dino58

So my brother completed the shelter for our adopted stray, Sammy, last weekend. Then the damned cat disappeared on Monday. Four days, and we feared the worst. Purry was so glad "that guy" wasn't around anymore. I think Della missed him staring at her through the sliding glass door.

Then this afternoon (Friday) he showed up ravenous. Maybe he was locked in a shed or garage, but we're convinced it's a Halloween miracle!

I don't know if you can see that inside of the styrofoam, there's a sherpa-lined cat cube.

Miley

Looks very cozy.

What experience has The Horde had with kitty shelters?

Here's the photo of Della (on the chair) and Sammy from last week. Evidence of a black cat Halloween miracle when Sammy returned!

Was taking care of the grandkids and dogs. We were raking leaves into a pile for some fun. Turned around and the 2 dogs had set themselves up for a perfect photo. Duck is the Rottweiler x mastiff and Bruce is the Golden Retriever.
I love this site and particularly the Saturday afternoon pet thread.

Sue

Duck and Bruce were having a great time! Bet the grandkids enjoyed watching them, too! Thanks for sharing such a fun time with us!

Update to our kitty fund has been posted

15 All my cats have been rescues, most of them just showed up - the lady down the street fed ferals and some cats don't like the crowd - one was from my neighbor, and one from the shelter.
I also stole one from my sister, but he was a kitten and needed more care than she could give him, and then my wife was too attached to let him go back.

16 Question for cat people:

(Bride of PI and myself are both cat people, yet still failing on this.)

We have a cat that has de-trained herself from using the litter box for both #1 and #2.

Clean bill of health from vet, we have tried about everything else - extra litter boxes with different litter, hidden litter boxes for added privacy, spraying vinegar water in favorite spots. Nothing has worked.

I am thinking about building a 4x4 "crate" and treating her like a dog.

Anyone have any better ideas?

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at November 01, 2025 03:51 PM (HlyYF)

17 Pillage Idiot, have you tried changing the type of litter you use?

The concept was mine, the execution my brother's. I realize that we should have made an extended plexiglass balcony, so Sammy can see down the walkway behind the shelter. His head's on a swivel most of the time.

But there are limits.

Last night Purry discovered, to his chagrin, that Sammy had returned. There was a tussle with some yowling and Purry shot down the walkway to disappear around the garage. Sammy strutted around with a ridge of fur along his back, tail a bit fluffed out. Did I mention he has a 13" tail? Yes, I measured it. There's something about a long-tailed cat.

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at November 01, 2025 03:53 PM (w6EFb)

20 Pillage Idiot, sorry. I see you have tried that. Try sand.

Posted by: Ben Had at November 01, 2025 03:54 PM (E6fZE)

21 I bought a plastic cat shelter last year. It's stackableand has built in insulation. I put a heating padin it for the old stray Hank and he seemed to enjoy it. I have a cute wooden A frame one that nothing uses. May put it out where I feed the birds for a little shelter.

25 Afternoon, Pet Folken! My long exile from the 'Net (not self-imposed, not the fault of my equipment) has been resolved!

No, Stirling the Great Black Cat did not take advantage of Halloween last night to scare anybody, or even sit in the window with a light behind him. This cat has no sense of the dramatic. He and little Dagny were just sleeping with me during my nap. She is doing well too.

Miley, I'm glad to hear Sammy is okay. He looks great with Della in your pic.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 01, 2025 03:59 PM (wzUl9)

26 I've never measured Stirling's tail. It might be a little longer than average. Dagny's, I know, is sort of stubby -- but apparently that is not considered a fault among Siberian breeders, as her mother had the same trait.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 01, 2025 04:01 PM (wzUl9)

27 Pillage Idiot, Della has also become disfunctional vis a vis the litter box. I'm ready to tear my hair out.

I now skim the box twice daily, which helps somewhat. I laid a giant doggie pee pad underneath it. She pees on that sometimes.

I've heard that excretion issues are often emotional (like a strange black cat that stares through the window at you). Any new stresses in your house?

Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at November 01, 2025 04:02 PM (w6EFb)

28 Allie has now migrated to my lap while Jasmine is dozing on her cat tree by the window.

The other three are still in their same locations.

Right now, he's happily laying on our floor.

Sue, out of curiosity: Is Duck enough of a Mastiff to think that he's a tiny little lap dog?

Posted by: NR Pax at November 01, 2025 04:08 PM (7xrfc)

34 When Tux quit using the litter box I eventually figured out it was because it was hard for him to get in and out of it. He would use litter that just put directly on the litter mat, and eventually I cut down the opening on a litter box. They sell litter boxes with lower step ins but they were still fairly high so I just cut down the entry on a cheaper regular box to only be maybe 1.5 inches high and melted it a bit where the cut was sharp or or rough. The people I got Tux from had said he needed to not have stairs because of arthritis, he would still climb stairs at that time but wouldn't step into a litter box. Anyway, its probably worth trying putting some litter on a mat and seeing if the cat will use the litter and only minds the box.

35 Della is the Naughty One. Purry's graceful, for the most part. Della was clumsy even as a kitten. Broke a beautiful blue planter with an African violet in it, the only plant I kept from Tim time. I remember the day we went to the nursery and picked it out. A bit of a splurge.

She also broke the amethyst geode he gave me.

Now she's trying to kill Publius' mama by chewing on her oxygen line. It's become covered with duct tape patches.

43 We may or may not be taking in a kitten. A coworker of my sister's were out doing the downtown trick or treating and a kitten cried at them from underneath a car. It went running to them when they called it.

Unfortunately, the guy is afraid that their big Maine Coon will hurt it, so he asked my sister if we would take it. All our rescues and county shelter are full.

If the guy decides to keep it, great! If we end up taking it, the kitten will have two other kittens to play with. My sister did tell the guy that it can take a week or so for cats to adjust to each other , so I am hoping he gives the two a chance.

It can take a while. My late Arizona and the cats he reluctantly lived with never did become more than barely-tolerated, distant acquaintances -- Arizona's fault. On the other hand, Wolf and Chekov, when introduced, sniffed each other, walked in diminishing circles around each other, and then in an hour they were sitting the window together watching birds.

Yeah, I really hope he gives them a chance to maybe become the best of friends or at least tolerate each other. At least he knows we will take it if it doesn't work out. Our shelters are so full, our cat only rescue ended up taking in a dog. They are also full, but the situation was so heartbreaking, they couldn't say no to the owner who was desperate for help.

59 There's a feral cat colony I've been feeding and watering for about 4 years now, and the shelter I built is very warm. I just got one of those medium size heavy duty storage crates with the lid that snaps on tight from Sam's, cut a hole in the front, got a big piece of styrofoam from Home Depot, cut it to fit the top, bottom, and sides, glued them in, then got straw from the feed store and put in it with a little flannel blanket. I change out the straw every spring and when it starts to get cold, but it works very well.

Yes. Clumping, non-clumping, scented, unscented.

She is a sometimes outside cat. I will let her in, and then find a piddle in the house 30 minutes later.

I think her preference is smooth floor.

I have even put two ceramic floor tiles in a flat tray, which she used a few times and then stopped.

I think she is operating on a random number generator, and I can't break the code!

69 Well, late to but didn't entirely miss the Pet Thread. Fortunately, Daisy, the loudly barking Malinois, roused me from my nap.

That looks (and sounds) kinda like a Malinois pup with that baby. We didn't get to enjoy Daisy as a pup; she was found running down the highway as, about, a teenager, not a puppy but not fully grown (as we found out).

In fact, none of our dogs has been a puppy; they all were found or wandered up as m/l adults. Never had to do any house-training, but miss having had a pup.

Here's another baby-and-critter vid I just happened to find on my way here.

We have no new stressors (that I know of), and moved our oldest cat (17 y.o.) to my son's house for extra TLC in a lower stress environment. The peeing cat occasionally bullied the older cat, so I don't think she misses her - and the poor toilet behavior started before then.

I will keep trying.

Hah!

I have so many photos (and videos) of our pets since I last sent some in for the pet thread. Not hard but I have to go through and find them, crop them, send them (or upload the vids) — and I'm so busy lazy.

Son and daughter have been bringing their two (each dogs by for visits frequently lately. Daisy gets so excited when they show up, and she has some fellow creature to roughhouse with (Ony the old black cat not being much fun). When all five dogs are here, it can get wild. Daisy actually went over the line to almost-fighting a couple of times the other day. Nobody severely injured, but it sounded bad.

Strangely she doesn't tangle with son's gigantic Alaskan Malamute, about twice Daisy's weight!
