< Della's on the chair - somehow Sammy didn't notice her, so there was no confrontation. Sammy's the stray we've been feeding; so far he's not allowed inside. We're making a winter shelter for him on the back porch. Two other strays are attempting to invade our Circle of Trust - another black cat, and a mostly white tailless calico that I call Bunnycat. Beautiful black cats.
The dog Ralphy rolled off the bed yesterday morning. I thought he broke his hip. I gave him a pain pill and Ralphy's limp cleared by nightfall. I gave him a pain pill today but he seems fine. At some point there are tough choices but ha manages the house fine and the vet feels he is full of life. Which he is. The pain pills are for his bad days which are still vastly outnumbered by his good days. Still. Afternoon, Pet Folken,
The physical resemblance between cats and owls has been remarked on for centuries. See Lear's "The Owl and the Pussycat." But I don't think anyone has ever linked up owl hardware and cat software before. That's genius. The one being petted at :15 looks very much like Linda's late Angelique the Psycho Siberian. We've been dogless for years, but we do dog sit for the kids occasionally. He's not bad, but he's still young enough that he's "throw the ball, chase me, play tug, pet me, pet me, ima climb on your lap, c'mon, c'mon" all the time. It's tiring. My two furry thugs: Stirling the great black is curled in his usual spot on the living room floor, at the far end of the couch and nearest the door. Baby Dagny is curled on the bed. I found them both napping with me when I woke, and she simply relocated but stayed.
At Petco this morning, there were three young shorthair cats for adoption: Jasmine, a black-and-white; Sage, a vigorously playful calico; and Sadie, a brown tabby with a good deal of white. They all seemed about the same age, as if they might have come from the same litter. Sage is clearly going to be two handfuls: As I drew a finger across the cage plexiglas, she leaped at my hand as if it were prey. There's good reason why they tell you not to use any part of your body as a toy for a cat. As a boy, not knowing that advice, I used my hand as a toy for our kitten Rusty. Fortunately he liked other toys even more. When he grew up, he was smart and good-natured, and if you told him "No claws!", he'd actually hold back when he played with you. Iive been very careful since then to follow that advice, though. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 25, 2025 04:02 PM (omVj0) 22
Chihuahuas are funny. Some are skittish and others are friendly.

Wolfus - my doggo (130 lb GSD) gets a fist-full of sedative pills 2 hours before the visit. They usually have zero discernable effect. Then I muzzle him and hold him in place while they poke his leg. The final step is they hit him with a big syringe of propophyl (sp?) And he finally goes nite-nite. They do all of his shots, tests, cleaning, etc while he's out. When I drop him off or retrieve him, there are no other animals loose in the office. He's quite the terror when he doesn't feel comfortable.

With the neighbor here, I would have taken a can of wasp spray, the kind with a 30' range and sprayed in the alley behind their place. The smell would discourage most cats from going up to be trapped. They were dumping the cats in smaller towns 15-20 miles away.

Black cats: My mother had a black with tiny hairs of white on his chest named "Sparky," after her brother's boyhood nickname. In one apartment she lived in before she met my father, she would loan the cat out to the photographer upstairs for mice eradication. In return the photographer took a studio portrait of Sparky, sepia-toned. Darned if he didn't look as if he were posing for a magazine cover. I know, because Mom kept the framed portrait on a shelf in the living room for the rest of her life.
That portrait is among the many things at her place I wish now I'd kept after she passed. (Others included a blond chairside table, and the stuffed Mattel Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent I got for Christmas when I was nine.) Posted by: Thanatopsis at October 25, 2025 *** She'd have been about twenty-one then, in 1946, I think. She was the third to play the mother in a Lassie family on TV. Her predecessor, Jan Clayton, was mom to "Jeff," Tommy Rettig (who later went into computers and was instrumental in the creation of DBase III). Anybody remember Jan's predecessor? I wish I could remember her name - and her owner's name - but if I haven't personally had a conversation with a Moron at at least 2 (sometimes 3) MoMes (and seen a nametag), I am hopeless putting a face with a name 🙄🙄🙄 (Mind you, I recognize both the face and the name separately, but that does me no good when face to face with said Moron...) Not offended being compared to a young Janis Joplin, but I can't see it. Sometimes I really miss the West Valley Bird Society. Good speakers, great raffles, seeing other parrots. It was barely hanging on when covid bullshit kilt it.

I grew up in Sleepy Hollow, NY (the REAL Sleepy Hollow) and my HS was Sleepy Hollow High. Mascot? The Headless Horseman of course! So, I doubly liked the little snippet of my buddy the Hessian!

Keep trying to get a picture of our new dog that an old lady had to surrender due to new living quarters. But the velocirapor, disguised as a German Shepherd, keeps photo bombing my pictures.

Posted by: Josephistan at October 25, 2025 *** Midnight was my cat Wolf's name when he lived with his previous "family" -- the people who left him behind when they got evicted, without even trying to find him a home. He didn't seem attached to the old name and swiftly learned to respond to "Wolf." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at October 25, 2025 05:28 PM (omVj0) 84
And just like that, we see why it’s important to guard privacy like an absolute maniac. We aren’t alone on the blog.

Qdp asked if the list of momee attendees would be available. Why he wants it I can only imagine. He was told no. He knows the rules here. Be very careful here. Posted by: fourseasons at October 25, 2025 05:51 PM (3ek7K) 92

The one I cropped has a little bigger smiles, but no other faces. If you want more elbow, I'll put in the other one after I get hubby back from the hospital.
