How, exactly, do people "disagree better"?

There was a big fight in Utah over "modernizing" the State Flag, which used to resemble the State Seal. Candace Owens has added some new dimensions to the conflict which I don't think have been completely thought through.

Anyway, a little over a year ago, I wondered how the electorate in Utah could have chosen both Senator Mike Lee and Governor Spencer Cox. Our own commenter Bonhomme answered some of my questions.

Spencer Cox has made a name for himself with his "Disagree Better" campaign. He has enlisted other governors in this program. It generally involves giving in to "the other side", but he has sometimes "circled back" to more conservative positions under pressure. And there is something to be said for the idea that government officials working at the state level are forced to be somewhat more practical than the feds, because they "have to fix the potholes". Though he also has some big ideas, like the Olympics, that involve compromise with, well, you know who.

After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, Cox did a pretty good job of keeping people informed of the actions of law enforcement and of the plans of the State of Utah. Many people were impressed. This brought new attention to the "disagree better" idea, but there seems to be more rancor, anger and disdain than ever in both the legacy media and social media. Strange.

The Atlantic turns its attention westward

I was already trending in this direction but I, for one, am grateful I never have to pay attention to Thomas Chatterton Williams again.

The Atlantic also published a piece by a McKay Coppins, about a warning from Trump to Spencer Cox. Link is to Instagram.

After Utah Governor Spencer Cox pleaded for calm in his address to the nation yesterday, Donald Trump called him with a warning. McKay Coppins spoke with the Utah governor.⁠

“You know, the type of person who would do something like that to Charlie Kirk would love to do it to us,” Cox says Trump told him. Trump went on to recite statistics suggesting the presidency was “one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet.” The governor understood Trump’s concern—“after all, the president had narrowly escaped assassination himself just a year earlier,” Coppins writes. ⁠

Cox told Coppins that although he was relieved an arrest had been made, marking the end of a 34-hour manhunt, he also seemed unnerved by the alleged killer’s identity: a 22-year-old man who’d grown up in a Mormon family in the southern-Utah town of Washington. During his press conference, Cox admitted that he’d been quietly hoping for a different outcome. ⁠

Yet, “Cox made clear that he wasn’t ready to let go of his Utah exceptionalism,” Coppins writes. “Maybe, just maybe, there’s a path forward for our country that comes through the great people of Utah,” he told Coppins.⁠

They really seem to be lionizing Cox for some reason . . .

Glance through the comments for "different" points of view.

CBS News is also laying it on pretty thick in support of Spencer Cox. "A lonely voice rose above the rancor". . .

Listen carefully to what Cox says, especially in his opening. Think about how his words might actually be applied in real life, in comparison to, say, reining in the SPLC's labeling of Turning Point USA as a hate organization.

Did you notice how the assassination of Charlie Kirk prompted a flood of attacks on his character?

Did you notice how a mass killer (apparently upset over a failed relationship years ago) who murdered several LDS people, injured many more and burned down an entire church triggered a social media firestorm over their identity as Christians, rather than over the terror attack?

Have you noticed that the terror attack in Manchester has triggered protests in support of other terrorists? How do you "disagree better" when these are the inclinations of society?

For those who are unaware, after a terror st*bbing by a Muslim man at a synagogue in Manchester today, Britain has broken out into nationwide violent pro-Palestine protests in solidarity with the terrorist.

She just has a much bigger platform to broadcast the information, and of course she is always spoiling for a fight so that adds to the drama.

I was looking at an Israeli guy's video who showed how after prodding and demands by Candace to release CK's letter to Bibi in its entirety, her CK killed by Mossad theory was blown to bits. There was a clip of Candace where she looked seriously disturbed, I mean DSM-5 level disorder.

Her speech patterns, the way her face contorts...George Farmer is a level headed guy. How tf is he dealing with this??

I believe Chevron is Jewish Lightning in that California punishes employers for laying off people - not sure if Acts of God making a plant unusable exempts Chevron. No one wants ot make any investments in expensive refineries when the government has promised to close them in a few years due to regulation.

Gasoline will be $8/gal. I'm more concerned with jet fuel since California is the gateway to Asia and fuel will get expensive as and additional 40% (Chevron's contribution) will need to be imported.

Dallin H Oaks will be the next prophet, and as befits a man who was a judge, he wants the conference to proceed in order, following the program for the weekend that our now deceased prophet had approved.

All of these talks were written and approved months ago. God knowing when he would call his faithful son back home, I'm interested to see what messages the Lord inspired our leaders to tell us during conference.

If anyone thought we would get messages of bitterness or retaliation for the shooting, the opening talk by Gary E. Stevenson is a salvo across the bow: blessed are the peacemakers.

The opening talk's all about Jesus' messages for us to be peacemakers, start that in our hearts, spread that to our homes and families, and then spread that to our communities.

It's a balm so far, and it just started. Looking forward for even more inspiration and spiritual healing this weekend.

Candace Owens is perfectly able to say whatever she wants. But, conjecture is damaging when 1. It is not proven 2. Proven wrong. The individual establishes a reputation for those missteps. She can say whatever she pleases, but that doesn't guarantee agreement.

Unbalanced? Sure, absolutely. But I'm also not going to "diagnose" her, for several reasons.

My personal opinion is, I wish she would tone it down. She's very angry. Whether she has a right to be or not, that's not for me to say, but I do notice that people who were previously acceptable to the so-called right, as soon as they question anything Israel does, they get attacked.

How she has responded to those attacks, it's probably not good for her in the long run. But that's just my opinion, and I, like everyone else, could be wrong about it.

Turning in to drop off my laundry, a young lady, talking on her phone according to witnesses, slammed into me, moving the car about 10 feet. I'm OK, with a little soreness from the shoulder harness. Poor little KIA is going to get a write off. Cops gave her a ticket, gave me the number for the incident to call on Monday providing me with her insurance (that's how they do it) and AAA towed it to the local shop where it will be totaled. Housebound for the weekend with plenty of grub, booze and smokes so it's a blessing with nobody hurt. I'm going to make a few phone calls Monday AM and just go buy another car.

I wish I could remember who said it! But someone said recently that after a certain number of times someone willfully violates the law, they are making it very clear they have no desire to participate in civil society. And therefore they must be removed from society for the protection of the 99% of the people who do properly participate in society.

6-7 times breaking the law shows a willful disregard for the law.

That criminal that was let go 100 times...there are no words. That shows that the judicial system has actual contempt for the lawful members of society, to keep putting them in harm's way. And the law is broken at that point, not merciful.

You know, I would have possibly respected Kamala for once if in that terrible interview with Rachel Maddow, where she said she couldn't pick Bootyjudge as VP, if she had called out her own side. Well, I think about the FBI framing Richard Jewell as a model. Based on "psychological profiling" and "trial by media". Law enforcement at any level is still susceptible to corruption, but Candace has been leaving a trail of people in her "witness tree" behind her whom she has subjected to forms of profiling and "trial by media". Small example: she couldn't find anything on Phil Lyman's parents (in Wikipedia?), which apparently helps make him a worthy subject for investigation by her audience for involvement in Charlie's murder. He could be part of a family conspiracy! (Lyman was raised by his widowed mother). And why did some "software engineers" at UVU speak to reporters but not to her? One said he got to the shooting site late and really didn't see anything. Coverup!

Before going off on these kinds of irrelevant tangents which undermine her credibility, why not do a little bit of actual investigation?

The irony is that by casting daily aspersions on witnesses like Lyman (who also thinks that the suspect did not act alone) she may damage their ability to persuade others to take more discreet investigative actions.

No one should be surprised when people she has contacted about things they know in this case scrub their social media accounts, as some already have.
