A Political Enigma in Utah

antelopeislandweeds.jpg

Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake

Why did Utah choose both Mike Lee and Spencer Cox?

There are a lot of questions about politics in America that are hard to answer. To me, one of the more striking current mysteries is how the people of Utah could elect someone like Senator Mike Lee, who routinely issues conservative policy statements with some clarity, while also electing someone like Spencer Cox (He/Him) as governor.

* * * * *

Choosing Spencer Cox

The last time we saw Spencer Cox's name appear in a post here at AoSHQ, it was in J.J. Sefton's Morning Report of 4/29. Cox had been beaten out at the Utah State Republican Convention by Trump-aligned Phil Lyman. By a very significant margin.

But there was a catch.

Cox, however, gathered enough signatures to make it onto the primary ballot, according to Utah Republican Party bylaws and Utah state law. Specifically, Utah’s gubernatorial candidates must receive at least 28,000 certified signatures in order to qualify for the primary ballot or surpass the 60% threshold at the state convention. Cox received 28,006 certified signatures, according to the Utah state government website.

People at the convention were not happy with Cox. They were noisy about it. Some people thought the noise level was too high.

But Cox later won the primary election.

Cox does some things that are conservative, but he also promotes a lot of progressive policies. He famously said that he labeled himself as "he/him" in hopes that it would make one young person with an unusual gender identity feel more comfortable.

He gets enthusiastic about a lot of idealistic, sort of utopian big government and public/private projects that seem to lack input from the "little people".

Cox has a big program going to train people to "Disagree Better". Since this program seems to have gone multi-state, I tried to find a written summary of the steps to "disagreeing better", but the website seemed to want to send you through a sample training program instead.

If you are unfamiliar with Spencer Cox, here he is. This video makes my skin crawl, though I have seen other videos of him speaking to which I did not have such a negative reaction:

An example of a successful outcome of the "disagreeing better" program in Utah that I read about online was a rural white conservative man helping a liberal black city woman with some government-involved project she wanted to complete. Don't remember the details. But I didn't see where the rural white conservative guy got anything that he had wanted. I thought that this was probably typical of the results of "disagreeing better".

Bennett's Phylactery is not impressed with Cox. Response in the thread: "The results of his actions / policies are objectively evil but at least he's nice about it".

Incisive Analysis from within The Horde

On Thursday, frequent commenter bonhomme wrote this on one of the threads here:

"Utah Gov. Cox (“R” who put his pronouns in his bio) says he wants his party to win but won’t be voting for Trump."

Over the past few years, I have been sending information from time to time to people (mostly in the West) involved in the struggle to keep the left from overwhelming our educational system. I thought that the people of Utah already knew what bonhomme wrote above, but I was impressed by what he wrote next and I sent it to a woman who has been through the fire. She posted it, crediting "a blog commenter", on her social media.

Bonhomme has received well over 200 "likes", and no nasty faces, on the assessment below:

Utah's a weird place. It was a sparsely populated state for a long time. In the last 30 years or so, a significant number of leftists escaping leftist holes have moved there. Additionally, a lot of the old guard Mormons there desperately want to be accepted by the rest of the world. ProgMos are quickly taking over.

Cox is a squishy ProgMo who has made his past of being bullied a big part of his identity and his policies. He reflexively identifies with people who sell themselves as victims, which makes him easily rolled by Marxian ideology which uses this pathology to gain leverage over the normal majority.

There was a lot of enthusiastic agreement with bonhomme in the comments, and a couple of comments from people who had somewhat differing opinions. A sampling:

Well that's spot on.

I never knew his past. Yet he always struck me as some one who got picked on as a kid! Now he is drunk on power and wants everyone to agree with he/him!

That describes him perfectly and you see ProgMos everywhere!

Wow! Masterfully described!

I agree with the explanation of Cox, but have a slightly different take on the ProgMo. My observation is that Utah is full of some really nice people who are dangerously naive. They are trusting to a fault. When they hear a candidate explain a proposal/issue/program using terms like "loving", "kind" or "compassionate" they're all for it. Never mind even a cursory review that would show it to be something completely the opposite.

Sadly, I feel this is inaccurate. I think his decision-making is far darker and more sinister than this comment would lead one to believe. He’s not just a sad, picked on story. He comes from a family of deep pockets. Let that sink in for a minute.

Bonhomme has elicited quite a bit of interesting thought there, plus some concerns about what conservatives should do next about the governor's race and dealing with the governor and state legislature for the next few years.

Utah also chose Senator Mike Lee

Here's a recent Twitter thread by Mike Lee that I thought was very cogent and worthy of analysis, particularly in contrast to most of the other political dialog going on recently:

Check out the questions about China down-thread.

I'm an outsider, but it seems to me that Utah made a good choice in Mike Lee.

He serves as a stark contrast to Spencer Cox.

Are there any similar contrasts in state-wide elected officials your state?

California Update - A Bad, Bad Immigrant

Too close to us for comfort:

REEDLEY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The man facing a federal three-count indictment for allegedly running an illegal lab in Reedley has filed several motions in court.

One is asking that he be addressed by his American name in his upcoming criminal trial.

This is a gutsy guy. Storing and manipulating multiple deadly biohazards in a warehouse is just the beginning of his crimes.

I think he should be addressed by BOTH his Chinese name and his American alias, so it will be easier to track crimes he committed in other parts of the USA and in Canada.

7 Cox is just the kind of slippery RINO swine that need to be thrown from office. They infest to Old Guard GOP who run State Parties, and must be dragged kicking and screaming from their comfy sinecures. Cleaning out the RINO scum will take time, but it is intensely rewarding to see them leaving in shame.

20 Utah is also a one-party state, outside of Salt Lake City (which has already had its first lesbian mayor).

ProgMos like Cox “compete” with conservative Republicans for the same seats, as wolves in sheep’s clothing.

And the common naïveté of Utahns lets it happen.

That’s what the anger at the state GOP convention was about.

Historically, that's true.

A lot of pioneer types disappeared within never to be seen again.

Once on a visit to Vegas with the delightful and hitting on 16 Mrs naturalfake,

we took a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon.

Wholley Kau! in some areas the cliffs and giant boulders and such form an insane looking maze. No water close-by either.

Chances are pretty good that if you're some goofy shmoe hiking to "touch grass", you're gonna touch Death if you go in the wrong place without water, experience, GPS, compass and a great map.

88 When we were still in South Africa but planning our return Stateside, my late wife and I (both Conservatives) had 3 general locations earmarked as places to settle: Colorado, Washington State and Oregon. One was vistas. We both loved mountains (for viewing, not so much for climbing - copter okay!) and two, we hated hot, humid weather. Well we didn't make it. Family was in Illinois and you know how that sometimes goes.

You might need to recalculate your concept of who the mob is.

It's much much less these days, Italians in zoot suits, and much more Hollywood bigshots. And corporate media types, and leftist politicians, and university perfessers and administrators. Oh, and the Deep State.

There's your mob. Arec Bawwin is a lowlife nincompoop, but he's a prominent celebrity. Who evidently didn't piss anyone off the way Bill Cosby and P Diddy did.

Although I suppose the circumstances under which Cosby got his release are somewhat suspicious. Who did his people have to pay off, and while we're at it, why is no one talking about Diddy anymore? Did Diddy do what he needed to be accepted back into the good graces of the mob?

Funny thing about that. I have a b-i-l who is a lifelong Mormon. He says they have as much of a rate of substance abuse, etc., as everyone else does. Lots of rehabs and halfway houses specializing in LDS recovery. I know I always had the impression that they were all fruit juicers until I went on a trip down the Grand Canyon with some of them as guides and found out they have backsliders and people who aren't quite as observant, just like every other religion.

A little OT, but in Africa I walked through a 100% Mulsim neighborhood and know I smelled bacon cooking, and beer was easy to find, and people used to turn down the radio when prayers came on and keep on doing what they were doing, but everybody dressed up for mosque on Friday. Not unlike most places in America.

There were a couple of spots where canteens could be refilled, so you timed your route accordingly. You never go in without a very detailed plan.

162 Netanyahu is scheduled to hold a presser at the Defense Ministry in 30 minutes.

The prevailing expectation is that he will announce & confirm the death of Hamas #2 Mohammed Deif.

I saw film of the attack on the private residence where Deif was believed to be. It looked like an atomic bomb had hit it.

If Deif was in that house, he's pushing up daisies. Israel merely said it had used "heavy weapons." I guess!

If Deif is dead, that's a major get for Israel indeed.

There are film & updates at Times of Israel (ToI) website.

But due to their nature of wanting control over others, the ability to seize things they didn't earn, their backing by rich elites, and the fact that their lives revolve around their issues, they out punch their size. Their natural opposition , the "right", are inclined to focus on other things, wish to be left alone and leave others alone, are interested in seeing what they can achieve themselves, and don't have a drive to control others.
Posted by: azjaeger at July 13, 2024 01:26 PM (3/XaG)

It's a money thing, and those who sink their money into controlling civilization are inclined to give it over to leftist politicians/causes, because there's much much much more room to control the world through those beliefs and institutions.

Of course, it wasn't THAT long ago when money flowed into and out of the Military Industrial Complex, and other big corps, through Republican pols. Now it doesn't seem to matter to those people... or they're into leaning much further left.

222 But that would involved a lot of killing in places outside Gaza. And they can’t politically do that, for obvious reasons. So realistically speaking you’re right.

I’ve seen much of the same, and these are serious milbloggers who count forces, not partisans. Thanks to Iran’s patronage, Hezbollah now is more powerful than several of the smaller countries in the region. People sometimes ask why the Lebanese Government doesn’t do anything about them; Hezbollah now outguns the Lebanese Government by about a 10-1 ratio.

232 Sorry but I don't buy the "ProgMo" line. Until the 80s, Utah was a very competitive state, what with over 20 years of Dem governors Calvin Rampton and Scott Matheson.

The notion that those fleeing California and the northeast are "blue locusts" bringing their pernicious voting habits is not supported by the numbers. Here in Florida the GOP has opened a 900,000 voter registration gap over the Dems. Looks like those new arrivals from NY/NJ/PA/New England are escapees, not missionaries.

I think its reasonably observable that in the 70s it was decided by the tippy tops that the majority of R&D money should go into IT\computers. Previously it was mechanically based, physical things. We are still building basically the same physical things we built in the 70s, just out of cheaper materials and lighter. Only difference is computer chips replacing as many physical operations as possible. Personally I feel that the tippy tops have a dream of intelligent machines doing all the work for them so they don't have to bother with the icky not thems in any way. Machines don't have to be manipulated, jived, or convinced to do as they are told. Incredibly advanced computers are the only way to get there for them.

Several are actually from Greece, e.g., Herodotus.

The part about defining a free man is on the right track. The key is understanding that to be free is to be responsible for one's actions, and then to realize that it's not an on/off switch. Think of what kind of behavior we give more or less leeway to people, under different conditions. Like how much stress they are under.

-

People don't want to stare at this too long, but - outside of telecoms, which could probably be argued against, too - we haven't invented anything of merit since the 60s and 70s. And "invented" in that usage is mostly pointing at widespread public adoption of microwave ovens, a tech which was invented long before then.

Like you said, everything is smaller, lighter, faster, and cheaper. But nothing is new.

That's not a good thing.
