Sunday Overnight Open Thread - August 10, 2025 [Doof]

Greywolf Golf Course - Panorama Mountain Resort - British Columbia

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday ONT! It is so nice of you to stop by here to end your weekend. The gray boxes await - you know what to do!

Florida Memphis Man

H/T to Mister Ghost in last night's Club ONT:

Memphis man shoots wife then drives her to hospital — but stops for beer along the way

A man in Memphis shot his wife in the gut and then drove her to the hospital — but stopped to pick up a beer along the way, according to local officials.

Decarlo Pitchford, 51, pulled the gun on his wife when they got into an argument on July 19 at their Tennessee home after the woman threatened to leave him, Law and Crime reported.

“I told you stop playing with me,” he allegedly said before pulling the trigger of his Ruger handgun.

Be honest - How many of you are thinking "he probably wouldn't have been able to stop for a beer had he used a .45"??

Sunday Night Retro Corner

In case you have not have heard, I will be taking on an additional night as ONT host starting this week. Weird Dave has passed the Thursday night torch to me, and he will now only be doing his Friday night meme night ONTs. As such, I will likely be revamping the Sunday night ONT to set it apart a bit from the two weekday ONTs that I will host.

One concept I'm mulling over is a recurring section of retro-related content. And it starts tonight!

Here's a cool article with some really cool retro photos. 17 Things Every Kid Looked Forward To In The Summers Before Screens

Before phones fit in our pockets and entertainment was a tap away, summer was spent a little differently. It was the season of dirty feet, bike rides with no destination, and staying out until the sky turned pink and the streetlights buzzed on. You didn’t need much to have a good time. A garden hose, a handful of fireflies, or a few friends with nothing better to do. Fun was something you made, not something you downloaded.

Back then, the days felt endless in the best way. You planned your adventures face-to-face, with nothing but a snack in hand and a head full of ideas. Boredom didn’t bother us; it pushed us to build, explore, and imagine. From running after the ice cream truck to turning cardboard boxes into rocket ships, summer was pure magic. Here are 17 things every kid looked forward to in the summers before screens took over.

3. Using sidewalk chalk until it ran out
doof-sidewalk-chalk.jpg

12. Building forts
doof-forts.jpg

One of my favorites is 15: Making up games with your friends that made no sense to anyone else.

You had rules. You had a strategy. You had fun. And you’d forget the whole thing by the next day and invent something new.

In my 'hood, we had games called "Box Catchers" and "Paper Chasers". Catch me at a MoMe and I'll tell you all about them!

Definitely check out the whole article. What other things along these lines did you do back in the day?

This commercial has been stuck in my head for 45 years. Yes, I'm serious.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

‘Fit for a Queen (see what I did there?)

Get ready to curtsy to style, because in 2026, The King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace is throwing open its doors for the most dazzling fashion exhibition yet: Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style. Marking the centenary of the late Queen’s birth, this show promises to be the largest and most comprehensive display of her wardrobe ever assembled. There will be over 200 items on exhibit —half of which have never been seen by the public. Grab your fascinators and let’s take a stylish stroll through the Queen’s wardrobe!

From princess to queen, from diplomatic dazzle to countryside chic, Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion was as legendary as her reign. This exhibition, running from spring to autumn 2026 (exact dates TBD, tickets on sale November 2025), will showcase pieces from every decade of her life. Imagine the sparkle of a silver lamé and tulle bridesmaid dress, designed by Edward Molyneux, that an eight-year-old Princess Elizabeth wore in 1934 for her uncle’s wedding. It’s one of the earliest surviving pieces from her wardrobe and a total time capsule of royal childhood glamour.

IMG_4816r.jpg

Then there’s the big-ticket items: her 1947 wedding dress and 1953 Coronation gown, both crafted by the legendary Norman Hartnell. These aren’t just dresses—they’re history in fabric, dripping with intricate embroidery and regal elegance. The wedding dress, with its romantic ivory silk and pearl details, was a post-war beacon of hope, while the Coronation gown screamed sovereignty with its golden shimmer and symbolic Commonwealth emblems.

Wedding dress:

Coronation gown:

IMG_4819r.jpg

Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t just a fashion star; she was a master of sartorial diplomacy. The exhibition will highlight how she used her wardrobe to send messages on the global stage. Take, for example, a stunning white gown from a 1961 State Banquet in Karachi, designed by Hartnell with a dramatic emerald-green pleat cascading down the back—a nod to Pakistan’s national colors. Talk about wearing your heart (and politics) on your sleeve… or rather, your skirt! This show will also feature never-before-seen notes, sketches, and letters from the Queen herself, revealing her hands-on role in crafting these diplomatic looks.

IMG_4818r.jpg

Nobody rocked a headscarf and tartan skirt quite like Queen Elizabeth II. The exhibition will showcase her off-duty style, which became just as recognizable as her glittering gowns. Think impeccably tailored riding jackets, cozy tartan skirts, and those silk headscarves that screamed “I’m at Balmoral, darling.” These pieces, many displayed for the first time, show a Queen who could go from state banquets to muddy fields without missing a beat. And honestly, her practical yet posh countryside vibe is still inspiring designers like Richard Quinn and Erdem today.

IMG_4820r.jpg

Curated by Caroline de Guitaut, Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art, this exhibition is more than a walk through a wardrobe—it’s a celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s enduring influence on British fashion. “Her distinctive style became instantly recognizable around the world, bolstering the British fashion industry and influencing generations of designers,” de Guitaut says. And she’s not wrong! From her lifelong partnership with Norman Hartnell to her championing of British couture in the 1940s, the Queen’s fashion choices put the UK on the global style map.

No visits to London in your 2026 diary? Good news! A companion book, Queen Elizabeth II: Fashion and Style, written by de Guitaut with contributions from fashion experts, will be available. It’s the perfect gift for fashion nerds and royal fans alike.

Speaking of fashion queens, there was a Melania sighting in Bedminster. She looked amazing, as usual, in a Rachel Comey Delirium dress in black polka dots from 2020. Her shoes were absolute fire - Christian Louboutin Dolly Mules in Bianca patent calf leather.

IMG_4813r.jpg

As this dress is a rewear, we can’t run out and purchase it. Fret not! I found two options at Neiman Marcus. The first is by Jacquemus, a Rita polka dot off the shoulder maxi.

IMG_4823r.jpg

Or, consider this Merlette Loris embroidered ruffle midi dress.

IMG_4822r.jpg

Happy shopping!

Thank you, Piper!

Panorama Resort is southwest of Invermere, B.C. in the Purcell mountain range. I remember being on a mineral property high up on a mountain above Toby Creek, and seeing Precambrian stromatolites in dolomite there. Structures made by living algae more than 600 million years ago. It was George W Bush who first suggested NATO membership of both Georgia and Ukraine in 2008. Putin said no and to prove he wasn't kidding he invaded Georgia.

Early in his term, whoever was writing the words for Joey to speak, he and his ludicrously incompetent administration once again suggested the Ukraine should be invited to join NATO. Then Putin invaded Ukraine. NATO expansion toward Russia is what started the war.

I don't think Trump has any plans to put NATO membership for Ukraine on the table.

128 As I mentioned earlier today, I'm watching a hilarious anime called "Nyaight of the Living Cat." Anna Puma was kind enough to point out that "nya" is the Japanese version of "meow."

It's a parody of zombie movies, with cats carrying a virus. Only this time, when a human is scratched by a cat, they are transformed into an adorable housecat.

It's hitting all the zombie tropes. Trapped in a supermarket and the cats break in! An evil corporation created the virus! The Government is helpless and hapless!

It would.make a great live action show, with hordes of cheap looking CGI cats defying all efforts to hold them back with water spray bottles.

Posted by: runner at August 10, 2025 10:43 PM (g47mK)

It was avocado. I still have nightmares about that. When I first started learning the kitchen renovation thing from my father it was around 1980, and all the Kitchens we ripped out were either avocado, that shit brown, or harvest gold. Anything that was white was usually something soooo old it was from a time before I was born. Right at that time the color almond was trendy. Dishwashers at that time used to come with 2 door panels, and each side had its own color. Almond, white, black, and one throwback color. Sometimes it was harvest gold, sometimes avocado, or the shit brown. I swear it was the industry trolling us.

165 Alone Again Naturally is one of the saddest songs ever. I remember in 1972 it was such a huge hit, I think it made it to #1 on Billboard hot 100. It was played frequently on AM radio top 40 stations. And it had crossover appeal as the older generations liked it too. My mother actually bought the 45 rpm single.

That is the first time I have seen the music video....thanks Doof..

193 I was born in the last year of the Truman administration. I'm old enough to remember Sputnik and the Kennedy assassination and the Salk vaccine. And your piece on what kids used to do really resonated with me. We rode our bikes all the hell all over the place. We'd go to the beach when the weather was nice. We'd go to an empty lot and play softball - no adults, no uniforms, just us and a bat and a ball and cardboard for bases. We'd play hide-and-seek well after dark, around the factory behind my house. Each spring, my mom would buy me a new pair of canvas gym shoes, and by summer's end they'd be tossed into the trash, worn out wrecks. We'd have killed for the tech kids have now - but it would have taken away so much of what made my childhood memorable: the things we did, rather than the things we consumed.

She also had a like cabinet set of ovens though (maybe 2/3 the width of the big oven) with a warming oven underneath.

The cabinet ovens I think either came with the house (mid 50s) or they had put in in the 60s. So that would have lasted into the 00s.

217 All sorts of speculation about the Putin-Trump summit. Some of it might even turn out to be true.

Things we do know:
1. J.D. Vance floated a proposal at an EU conference to "allow" the Russians to keep the territory they now occupy. EU and Zelensky immediately rejected it.
2. Tactically, the Russians continue to win on the ground. They keep pushing forward and there's not much the Ukrainians can do to stop them.
3. The Russians are poised to cross the Dniper River and start retaking the southern city of Kherson. This would be one Hell of a fight, so they may not actually do it, but the threat is undoubtedly enough to keep Ukrainian troops stuck there when they could be fighting elsewhere.

I dated a chick with that color in the bathroom of her parent's house, and somebody dropped something in the bowl and broke a small hole in it, so her father repaired it with some bolt and a rubber washer. I told them I would bring them a bowl when I gutted a bathroom with that color. Well she was long gone by the time the next pink bathroom came into play, so none were saved. lol

I had the best parents any kid could ever ask for. Came home from Kollige after my sophomore year and told them I was thinking of taking a year off and going diving in the Caribbean. My dad called me a dumbass, my mom said do it. They were both right.

Somehow, we all survived.

338 The kids before the 70s had even more freedom, judging by how far they were allowed to walk to school. Circa 1910 it was many miles. I was allowed, as a young child in the 1960s to walk about a mile on my own with school crossing guards on busy streets. Today kids don’t walk at all: the school bus let’s them off at their home or they are picked up at school. I’m talking about grade schoolers here. In high school a lot of kids seem to have their own cars today.

And likely very accurate, too. Simple zero crossing counter of the incoming AC waveform. It's time keeping is as good as the grid's, which is pretty impressive over the long term. There can be short term variation with load changes, but over the long term, dead accurate clock.

Something else you can't find anymore is the old PM synchronous motor clocks. They were grid accurate as well, and cheap.

384 One of our underground forts we built the summer of 83 still exists. It's in a field by the cemetery here in town. It's mostly filled in but the railroad ties we covered it with are still there and it's about 3' deep now where when we dug it it was 6' 4" as that is how tall one of my buddies (RIP Rick) was and he could stand up in it.
That whole neighborhood where I spent 6 to 16 is loosing people quick. Lost 4 in the last year. I'd bet about half of us are dead at this point. I'm starting to wonder about that dirt we all munched.
The hood was fully free range back in those days. We stole beer and cigarettes because, well, they were close to the door at the store. Pranked everyone. The more pissed they got the better. Toilet papered the houses of our enemies. Rode miles and miles on our bikes.

Whenever I see canned corned beef on sale, I buy a can or two. I don't know what you do with you corned beef but I make hash with potatoes, onions, sweet peppers. Add the corned beef at the last minute just to warm through. Economical. Just add egg(s). Two or three meals out of that.

407 I once built a 3-story tree fort in this massive Olive Tree...
Posted by: Nightwatch at August 11, 2025 12:27

My tree fort memory is a bit different, but we had a blast. This was when I was maybe 7-8, we had this big elm tree that was configured so it was easy to climb, best in the neighborhood.

So a bunch in the neighborhood used to climb it with me. Maybe I asked Dad if he could build a tree fort, don't recall. But he put a simple platform way up there it seemed. We had a blast.

I had a lot of conversations over his last few months, couldn't leave to be there because Jules was sick. I wish I would have thanked him for that tree fort.

410 I grew up the only white kid in my hood. We played hide and seek only it was called hidenbebo.

If you were the seeker you would yell hidenbebo are you ready and then start the hunt.

Wasn't until years later as an adult I asked a black friend if he ever played a game Hidenbebo. He looked at me and said ' are you saying hiding people? ' . For 20 years I had no clue that was being said.

Posted by: polynikes at August 11, 2025 01:12 AM (VofaG)

411 No tree fort. We did have a giant weeping willow tree with a swinging rope tied 20 or so feet up or so. We would swing out over the above ground pool and into the water.

I did not feel old after watching that quiz video.

I did feel old describing my jiurney through the generations of calculating, computing, and programming to my two gKids on our ride up from Sussex County this afternoon. From slide rules to smart phones we went and I doubted that they might ever grasp the magnitude of the changes involved.

Teach them a bit about the slide rule, then watch Apollo 13, for pleasure, together. Then, very briefly, mention that they made precise computations with no computer, only a slide rule.
Then let it go. Years from now there will be an event that triggers memory. It will be an 'oh, shit' moment.

I had forgotten that it was Jim Lovell who was paired with Buzz Aldrin on the Gemini 12 flight, for which and during which Buzz worked out how one could perform actual work in weightlessness while outside a spacecraft.

That this problem was only solved during the last Gemini spaceflight showed how compressed the time span was and how resourceful and intelligent our earliest astronauts were. They truly were giants. It is easy to understand why Buzz punched a moonwalk sceptic when confronted by him some years back.

When asked why I never caught the dinosaur craze as a kid, I reply that I had something better to capture my imagination then -- the U.S. space program of the 50s through 70s.

Besides that, Buzz's doctoral thesis was entitled "Line of Sight Guidance Techniques for Manned Orbital Rendezvous". They got to calling him "Dr. Rendezvous" after that.

Aldrin's immortal quote when he first stepped foot on the Moon was "magnificent desolation."
