Mangy Foreign Rat Jon Oliver: Nuts to Jay Leno, Comedy Is All About Political Partisanship

He's so repulsive.

John Oliver doesn't care about Jay Leno's opinions.

The "Last Week Tonight" host, 48, responded to Leno, 75, recently criticizing late-night TV hosts for alienating half their audience with one-sided political jabs.

"I'm going to take a hard pass on taking comedic advice from Jay Leno," Oliver told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Tuesday.

Jay Leno was one of the most successful comedians in world history. He never even touched his Tonight Show salary, living entirely on his comedy show income, which he continued doing well past the Tonight Show gig.

He made the brilliant calculation to never do a comedy show for broadcast, figuring, correctly, that his act was worth tens of millions of dollars over a lifetime, whereas releasing a DVD would net him maybe $100,000.

He made so much money from his road gigs that it was nothing to him to give up $10 million per year of his NBC salary to keep his entire staff on without any firings or salary reductions.

I'm a mid-tier fan of Leno's comedy. I never had any interest in his Tonight Show stuff, but as an actual working comedian, there are few in history who have made the fortune he has just standing on stage, one man one mic, telling jokes he wrote.

How snotty and overly fond of oneself do you have to be to proclaim that Jay Leno has nothing of value to say about comedy?

The British comedian also defended sometimes upsetting viewers with jokes on his show.

He literally never insulted viewers. He's a coward who only placates and flatters his leftwing audience.

He insults non-viewers.

...

"I guess I don't think it's a question of what you should do because I don't think comedy is prescriptive in that way," he added. "It's just what people want. I think our show clearly comes from a point of view, but most of those long stories we do are not party political. They're about systemic issues."

"Systemic issues" like racism and transphobia. Totally not "party political."

In addition, 90% of his "stories" end in an explicit activist call to action. John Oliver's gimmick was to rouse the audience to join in some stupid hastag or internet trend to push certain political outcomes.

But not "party political" at all!

Oliver, who has hosted "Last Week Tonight" since 2014, pointed out that he doesn't only discuss divisive political issues on the HBO show.

The British comedian defended sometimes upsetting viewers with jokes on his show.

"Our last few shows were about gang databases, AI slop, juvenile justice, med spas, air traffic control," he said. "I'm not saying that these don't have a point of view in them. Of course they do. But I hope a lot of them actually reach across people's political persuasions."

These are his examples of stories he does that might upset liberals? He knocks air traffic controllers (almost certainly in a story attacking Trump for defunding the FAA or some nonsense) and he wants us to believe his braindead liberal clapping seals are really "upset" by jokes about air traffic controllers?

Hey, if you really want to be edgy and rile up your viewers, tell jokes about airplane food. Have you tasted it?! It's not very good at all!

Zing! Got 'em!

"You want people to at least be able to agree on the problem," Oliver added, "even if you disagree on what the solution to it is."

LOL. We just want people to agree that liberal panic issues are real stories -- global warming, "white supremacy," Israel's "genocide," Trump's "authoritarianism," six year olds unable to receive "gender affirming care" -- while agreeing that things conservatives care about like uncontrolled immigration and unpunished violent crime are "fake issues" that Republicans make up to divide us and push their racist agenda.

...

Oliver said after Colbert's show was axed that the decision was "terrible news for the world of comedy."

What a surprising opinion that is sure to upset many of John Oliver's viewers.

I wanted to update the Howard Stern story: Many people are reporting he's been "cancelled." He hasn't been. There is merely reported to be talk that Sirius doesn't want to pay him any longer, and Stern is meanwhile claiming he may retire.

I now realize that all of this talk is happening around a contract renegotiation. As a longtime fan of James Bond since the Roger Moore years (wait, how can I possibly be 28 years old?!), I remember well the dance that Roger Moore and Cubby Broccoli would do every couple of years. Moore would say "I'm thinking of turning in my Walther PPK" and Cubby Broccoli would say he's ready to go in a new direction and leak to the media that he had screentested actors to replace Bond. (Like... American actor James Brolin?! In the scene, he and First Tier Bond Girl Maude Adams play out a key scene from From Russia With Love. Adams would impress them so much that they'd just cast her, for the second time, as a Bond girl, this time in Octopussy.)

And then they'd come to terms. Broccoli would give Moore a raise and he would sign on to do another Bond film. (And he agreed to do one more Bond film too many.)

I just wanted to point this out because people are psyched that Starn is being cancelled. He may be. But Sirius might just be saying they don't want to sign him to get Stern to reduce his demands.

And they may be the ones who leaked his current (alleged) ratings of 125,000, down from 20 million.

I do think he might well end up being cancelled because there just may be no number that the perverted narcissist Howard Stern is prepared to swallow his pride and accept, which Sirius could also agree to.

But he might not be. Unfortunately.

Other news going around that is, sadly, Fake News is the claim that The View has been cancelled.

theviewcanceled.jpg

Clickbaiters are claiming that Rosie O'Donnell "confirmed" that the View had been canceled.

Well:

1, Rosie O'Donnell was kicked off the show long ago

2, Rosie O'Donnell is an idiot who has a general expertise in being wrong about everything

3, Rosie O'Donnell is mentally ill and hysterical

4, Rosie O'Donnell routinely makes hysterical claims WITHOUT EVIDENCE to feed her obsessive hatred of Trump

She doesn't know anything. I think this idiot was taking The View's hiatus -- a summer break from taping their idiot carny show -- as a "cancellation."

Don't fall for the clickbait. This show may be cancelled down the line, but Rosie O'Donnell's claim is premature and simply more conniptions from a hateful, hysterical madwoman.

Jimmy Kimmel lacks all self-awareness. He says that "loud," "repulsive" voices of the intolerant left are pushing people out of the Democrat Party.

He has no idea.

Oh, and both he and Sarah Silverman are finally fixin' to leave the country. Because Authoritarianism. I'll believe it when I see it.

One more stupid thing: The producers of The Office (US version) have a new show.

It's about a local newsroom.

No, it's not about how stupid "journalists" are.* It's about how vital they are.

Pass.

* In fairness, you can't do a show about people you despise. But of all the people to valorize -- the news media? Are you kidding? How out of touch do you have to be?

I'd read, probably here, the story that he gave up part or most of his NBC salary to keep his show staff from taking a cut in pay, but not that he made so much from his stand-up that he didn't need that salary at all.

After he left Tonight, he took a recurring role on Tim Allen's conservative sitcom Last Man Standing. Just to keep his hand in? Or because Tim is an old buddy? Or both?

49 In a climate where journalists are being dropped at a faster rate than Pinochet's private helicopter. And, a climate where "Hollywood" holds the same prestige of that homeless guy camped out in front of the liquor store, you have to admire the optimism of creating a television show that highlights journalism, and thinks that the subject and medium will serve to take two massive negatives and create a miraculous positive.

I hereby label this the "Magnet Approach ™ " to entertainment.

Me also, preferred his kind of comedy to the sort of "play it safe", paint by numbers boomer lane Leno was in.

Very clear though, Letterman was an asshole his whole life and he stopped being really funny in the 90's.

Leno seems a standup guy, even though he himself is an old school liberal Democrat. He at least has manners.

I met him in a closed off event where it was only "non-famous" people around him, and he couldn't have been more gracious to "flyover country" type people.

91 as an over 29 year old during Barky's tenure Jay Leno's comedy was on my wavelength. After Leno retired I would watch Kimmel once in a while, he actually did some tame humor about the Obamas but my interest in late night comedy show was waning anyway.

Then Trump won on 2016 and it seemed every major comedy person was hit with horrible TDS. I think Fallon was the least so, but I didn't 'get' his younger comedy at all. So it was either Gunsmoke reruns, or just read the ONT to wind down when I was up that late.

My dad watched Jay's car show sometimes. It was okay but Leno let his liberal side out more doing that show and I'm not really a car person so for me it was just ok, if there was nothing better on.

104 Jon Oliver always struck me as the guy who handed out towels at a gay "bathhouse" to our 1st Power Bottom President.

My take on people that do daily shows and are successful for years have a knack for never wearing out their welcome. Carson, Leno, and Limbaugh were the masters of the skill.

While harpy bitches like Oliver, Griffin, Lemon, or Madow seem to think the whole point of their "shows" is to exhaust their audiences with their endless propaganda and faux genius at destroying their perceived enemies. Or in more scatological terms, what they do is a lot like them coming to your house, storming in, and then shitting on the floor before leaving immediately afterwards.

I also share Leno's love for cars, and look forward to seeing him this weekend in Pebble Beach for the Concours d'Elegance. Yes, but she's a woman, so you can see his hands were tied. he was a complete shitweasel and bashed her constantly. He owes her an apology and owes us a muzzle. Go away.

Leno would be the late night host with no balls to address current events in any meaningful way. Just deliver a nothing-burger of an anecdote that vaguely touches on the issues of today while still proclaiming that ultimately everything is still great, and that would always keep his boomer audience complacent.

Leno only wants comedians to avoid politics because it's his politics that are a joke. Leno who was all over the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal.

200 A few points on the comedy stuff:

1. Supposedly American comedies and romcoms don't sell well overseas, because foreigners don't get or like our humor. (which is why Hollywood's push for international blockbusters and woke killed off the comedies.) So let's import John Oliver, a Brit, and Trevor Noah, a South African, to do comedy for Americans. Sounds business plan. (To be fair, Craig Ferguson worked, but he wisely never took the job seriously, and entertained first.)

2) Gutfeld was brilliant on Jimmy Fallon's show. Kept it off kilter the whole time he was on (jumping into his arms, then the crazy story about their meet cute at an illegal speakeasy when they were wasted, then how his getting fired and having his mom on were the best things for his career. Very fun and non political.) It was a great first impression for people who have been conditioned to believe Greg is a Nazi. Well done.

3) John Oliver isn't worthy of wiping dog poop off Johnny Carson's shoes, and Carson managed to survive and thrive among the most politically divisive eras of his time. He explained why on 60 Minutes: it's not his job to politicize or tell people what to think.

248 >>> Comedy Is All About Political Partisanship

To be correct, partisanship can be a subset of comedy.

Say that the small cabal that conspired to imprison hundreds of J6 people - hundreds of consecutive four year sentences for the cabal (deprivation of civil rights), and they suicided in their cells. That would be a comedy for one, a tragedy for the other, but objectively, hilarious.

I always loved his turn in Affair to Remember, and it was more poignant knowing he filmed it right after his own love affair with Sophia Loren, whom he desperately wanted to marry, ended, and she ditched him to marry her wealthy husband. He poured all his feelings into the role, and it's so powerful.

I'm not sure how being a gang member (native or imported) makes sense as a comparison but ok.

I am guessing DIL became a US citizen by becoming DIL, and Japan and the US mutually do not require someone to choose. It's not a bad thing to have an escape route in the event of a commie takeover, but it the difficulty I've had with something like that is, if *this* place crashes, there really isn't any other place like it.

Dyan Cannon was Cary's last wife, and the one who gave him a child, actress Jennifer Grant.

The LSD story, I've heard, was from very late in his life, when he experimented with it under medical supervision -- before it became illegal, I think -- and found it therapeutic.

277 Louis CK has talked about being a writer for Leno. He would tell some somewhat offensive jokes/bi-lines to his guests and then have them edited out. He knew what his job was, to appeal to as many as possible. He also knew his main competition, Letterman, was much more acidic in his humor style so why not provide a stark choice?

Leno had Kathy Lee Gifford on. She talked about how they built her son a stage. She said “what kind of kid doesn’t want to perform on a stage” Leno said “the straight ones.” He edited out the joke.

As for Oliver, well, you can just tell about him, too.

297 Leno was a top tier comic. He wrote his own stuff, and never resorted to cheap tricks (swearing, ridicule, political bs) to get laughs from his audience.

And miracle of miracle, after 40 years of admiring his work, I have zero idea what his politics are - although I suspect he leans to the right.

Plus he seems like a damn nice guy.
