Sommer is credited with bringing European Modernism to Ohio. He should have left it in Europe. No depth, no detail, no emotion, just squiggles of color and rough brush strokes. It looks like a rejected Arrow shirt company ad or a bad illustration from The Great Gatsby. Another case of 'modern' art that leaves the public saying 'So what' no matter what art critics declare.

He managed to make watercolor look like oil pastel. I guess that's a novel technique, but it seems a waste of more expensive materials. Sadly, this appears to be one of his *better* works. Most of what the online art sellers are selling look like studies for real paintings.

I looked at some of this artist's work, he seemed to be all over the place, adjusting his style to meet the demands of whichever early 20c treatment was in vogue.

My besties retired a couple of years ago. Sold the business and moved to the Keys. They were back last week for a visit and he told me of the torture he was going through building shelves in the garage and other Herculean tasks that used to take an hour and now last for days. We used to get up a 4 am, go fishing for a couple hours and then go to work. And then put up shelves in the garage.
