Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | You Only Get An ONT On Days That End In YHowdy folks! How is everyone tonight? Whatta You Know, The Market Works Milei’s Man-made Miracle When he was sworn in as president in December 2023, the Argentine economy was a seemingly incurable basket case. In 2023, its gross domestic product had shrunk by 1.6 percent, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Perhaps more strikingly, per capita gross domestic product (GDP) on an inflation-adjusted basis was lower than it had been in 2007. Public finances were in disarray. The last time the government had run a surplus was in 2008. The IMF estimated total public debt at around 90 percent of GDP, but the important thing was how much of that debt—more than $40 billion—Argentina owed to the IMF, the culmination of no fewer than 22 programs. The previous Peronist government’s reckless fiscal and monetary policies had created annualized inflation exceeding 200 percent. Indeed, wholesale price inflation in December 2023 was 54 percent month over month—technically hyperinflation, according to the widely accepted definition. To give you some idea, in 2023 the price of a latte roughly tripled from around 1,500 pesos to around 4,500. For the last three years, Cuervo Café—the coolest coffee shop in Buenos Aires—had to adjust its prices twice a month. After less than 20 months, Milei has eliminated the fiscal deficit, cutting it from 5 percent of GDP to zero. He has reduced the number of government ministries from 18 to 8. (“Ministry of Tourism and Sports—out!” he declared in a campaign video, tearing its name off a whiteboard. “Ministry of Culture—out! Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development—out! Ministry of Women, Gender, and Diversity—out! Ministry of Public Works—out, even if you resist!”It truly is amazing what he's done. I wish politicians up here were paying attention. It's What's For Dinner Is Your “Made In the USA” Beef Actually Made In the USA? When the average American is at the grocery store shopping for beef, you are likely to see labels that say, “MADE IN THE USA.” Sadly, and outrageously, these labels mean next to nothing: The USDA has passed new regulations that won’t take effect until 2026, that are aimed at tightening up the rules around “Made in the USA” labeling on beef and pork. Shockingly, however, labeling the country of origin is totally voluntary! Beef and pork are almost the only food products where country of origin labeling isn’t required:The rest of the article is an ad. But you should do what I do: Buy a ¼ or a ½ from a local rancher. No only do I know my beef is from the USA – I met the cow it came from before it went off to the slaughterhouse. Dance Break — ONT WTF (@OntWtf) July 25, 2025 Taking Out The Trash The Deep State Is in Real Trouble Now Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard just lit a fuse under the deep state—and it’s about time. Appearing Sunday on “Sunday Morning Futures” with Maria Bartiromo, Gabbard dropped a stunning accusation: that Barack Obama personally directed a “treasonous conspiracy” to undermine Donald Trump’s presidency before it even began. And now, according to Gabbard, the floodgates are opening—whistleblowers who were sickened by what they witnessed are starting to come forward. “The implications of this are frankly nothing short of historic,” Gabbard said. She pointed to more than 100 newly released documents that she says show how Obama, just weeks before leaving office, greenlit a coordinated effort to sabotage Trump—after he was elected. “This is not a Democrat or Republican issue. This is an issue that is so serious it should concern every single American.” According to Gabbard, Obama and his inner circle simply refused to accept the outcome of the 2016 election. Instead of stepping aside and respecting the will of the people, they weaponized the intelligence community and pushed a phony Russia narrative to kneecap Trump before he even took office. “They decided that they would do everything possible to try to undermine his ability to do what voters tasked President Trump to do,” she said. “So, creating this piece of manufactured intelligence that claims Russia had helped Donald Trump get elected contradicted every other assessment… that said exactly the opposite—that Russia neither had the intent nor the capability to ‘hack’ the United States election.”I'd like to think there will be consequences, but my hard won cynicism tells me there won't be. Leaping Lizards! Webster officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for a potentially dangerous water monitor that is on the loose in the lakeside town. “There is a water monitor loose in the area of Blueberry lane off from upper gore,” Webster Animal Control wrote on its Facebook page Friday. “If you spot this reptile, please immediately contact animal control or the police department. Please DO NOT approach and let the professionals handle the animal.”Florida man laughs. She's The Worst The Judicial Tyranny of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson How can you tell if the newest Supreme Court Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is an "activist" judge? She admits it. Worse, she appears to think it is her job, if not her duty, to engage in (left-wing) judicial activism. In an interview with CBS News, Jackson explained what she hopes to accomplish in her many dissents. "I just feel that I have a wonderful opportunity to tell people in my opinions how I feel about the issues," she said, "and that's what I try to do." She added, "And I'm not afraid to use my voice." This sounds like a podcaster rather than a judge. You might be forgiven for thinking judges are supposed to interpret the law as intended by the legislature and apply the law to resolve disputes before the court. When even Sotomayer is disagreeing with you, you've got issues. 1. Zelensky made the mistake of cracking down on a couple of "anti-corruption" NGOs. Suddenly, protests are springing up all over the country and some of his former Western backers are expressing their grave concerns. It's almost as if he is being set up to be thrown under the bus. 2. On the ground, the Russians continue to advance. Hulk Hogan, dead! That is unexpected.
Despite being famous - even when at the peak of his fame back in the late 80s and early 90s - he would take his children out places without doing any sort of celebrity BS or acting like an asshole. He was just their dad and could relax back into that role, apparently. Here's a story about that. Once upon a time I had been prevailed upon by my parents, as occasionally happened, to drive my kid sister to Celebration Station and hang around until they got off work and met us there. Said kid sister and friends would try to win stuffed animals and so forth, and while there were much more interesting things like go-karts and the batting cages, I had to be halfway responsible and stuck around in the nearby arcade where I could keep an eye out. Anyways, I'm playing the original Mortal Kombat (or maybe it was Street Fighter II? This was 30 years ago, and I don't 100% remember which it was), and they had this setup where the arcade machines were back to back, so you didn't see who was playing against you in player vs player. I was trying to solo through the game and someone kept challenging, and you'd get the message and have to fight them. (Cont) Posted by: Locarno at July 24, 2025 10:27 PM (wiYsG) 79

When did they start giving hardcore anesthesia for wisdom tooth extraction? When I had mine out, it was just a bunch of novocaine, and the oral surgeon (who was also a substitute science teacher at my high school) went at them with what looked for all the world like a masonry hammer and a mortise chisel. For one of them, I had to hold the chisel.
Posted by: Pennsyltucky at July 24, 2025 10:16 PM (QdGJh) This was what, '67? I had all four wisdom teeth extracted as a prerequisite for braces. I was given a pill to take the morning of (apparently lots of cocaine or variations thereof) and for the procedure itself I was given IV anesthesia. The procedure itself was about a half an hour. A fifteen minute to half an hour recovery time, then a trip to the pharmacy with Mom, where I was too doped up to get out of the car. Posted by: RickZ ********************** I was admitted to the hospital and had all four removed while under general anesthesia. Thank God. I was informed later by one the OR nurses, that it took them 1.5hrs to remove all four since the roots were wrapped around the jaw bone. At one point they considered breaking the jaw..... Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
It is too soon to say the Ukrainian defense is collapsing, but it may not be too far off. 3. The latest round of talks in Istanbul officially lasted all of 40 minutes. The Russians did not demand unconditional surrender. This time. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at July 24, 2025 10:27 PM (3Uvxo) He needs to be removed. One way or another. Teenage me was astonished and thrown off his game a bit; the Hulkster proceeded to button-mash his way through the next fight against me and not need another quarter this time. Anyways, I saw him once or twice later at the same place. I guess his kids liked it, and also no one bothered him there. I never did have another battle against Hogan, though. The issue with buying your own beef is how long can your butcher "hang" or "age " it.
Local butchers have limited space and at most you get a 10 day hang. Demand for space you see. Aging is the key to quality beef. I knew a guy that had a 300 cow feed lot. I asked to buy from him and he said... frankly you get better beef at Costco. That where he bought his beef. It's the aging thing. Posted by: Derak at July 24, 2025 10:48 PM (CIBrX) 125

My teeth were probably contenders for world's worst, and they were giving me trouble, so shortly before Mrs Some Guy retired and bye-bye-insurance, I had the remaining nuisances yanked. General anesthesia, took about 60-90 minutes, and no problems after (though I did use up most of my pain pill prescription during the next several days). Makes chewing certain foods difficult, and shaving's a bit weird because the area around the mouth isn't shaped quite the way it was any more, and I find I can no longer whistle easily. Other than that, it's good. But if I were a vampire, I think I'd have real problems.

States vary on how difficult it is to have someone committed, but I think they all basically follow the same criteria for initiating the process, and it's basically "a danger to themselves or others." Keeping them there is a different story. I assume all states make the responsible mental health team file paperwork with the court, and then have to have it reviewed periodically. Either monthly or longer I guess, if the person is considered to be permanently lacking in the mental capacity to keep themselves safe. I've only ever dealt with shorter term commitments, and where I am now, Arizona, the standard is MUCH harder than other states. Posted by: BurtTC at July 24, 2025 11:22 PM (YpWtw) 187

Dr. could only prescribe a week's worth (or was it 100 pills?) of Oxy's at a time. It took 48 hours to get a refill written, and it had to be presented in-person at pharmacy. Not fax'd. Dad had to *authorize* me, my husband, my brother, to get the printed Rx from Dr. office. Then, he had to *authorize* us to pick up the meds from pharmacy. But Dad kept those pills close by, and wouldn't tell me he needed more until they were nearly gone! I finally had to sneak 2 days' worth out & set aside, so that he'd never truly "run out" of them. On wisdom teefs.. it started so simply. A cracked tooth (stress-grinding, probably). Oragel kept me sane while I arranged to take some sick leave, went to see the dentist. "Yeah, it's gonna need to be extracted, and while we're at it, your wisdom teeth are overgrown by your gums, so let's take them out too. Only.... your roots are so long, you need an oral surgeon, not me."
Only oral surgeon in town on my insurance... wasn't in business. So I ended up scheduling an appointment in the same town as my parents lived, about 4 hours away, for that weekend. Drove up, they drove me in the next morning, I don't remember the rest of the day but apparently I was feeling no pain thanks to the anesthetic. Luckily I recovered in time for work the next week. I remember reading lefty boards after the 2000 election. They were convinced Shrub was going to have them committed to an institution.
Not mind you Soviet style - their concern wasn't so much he'd lock them up over politics but that he would do it because they "saw the world differently then other people". So...they knew they were what would be traditionally considered crazy. Shrub didn't do jack shit about pretty much anything anyway. But perhaps a lot of our modern problems would have never occurred if much of the activist left was getting mental help... Posted by: 18-1 at July 24, 2025 11:39 PM (t0Rmr) 219

I've seen that generally doctors will NOT use general unless they have to. I guess there is a small risk that you won't wake up.
But most people need it with wisdom teeth. I do remember starting to wake up while they were working on me and hearing "he's waking up" right before falling back out of it. Also, when I was in recovery I found myself laying on a bed. My first reaction was to get up as the nurse started telling me "don't get up". It’s rather funny - there were times earlier in life where I drank too much on a regular basis, but I hit the fork that everyone who does that hits - your body adjusts to where you just don’t get that buzz you used to get - in fact it doesn’t do much you at all . And then you face the choice - switch to lots of hard liquor, all the time, and become a hard core ally, or accept that your days of casual drinking are pretty much over, as are you days of easily getting a buzz from anything.
Fortunately I was able to accept that those days were over, and while I like to pretend to drink for old times sake, I rarely drink much alcohol at all anymore. Don’t really miss it either. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 25, 2025 12:53 AM (e2MJJ) 287

Not that IPA crap, but good bottled beer, at least good in the sense of what we can buy here. A favorite in college was a New Zealand beer called Steinlager's. It came in a typical beer bottle with a bottle opener top. The thing that struck me was that each bottle cap was lined inside with cork. I've never seen that before or since. Good beer. Sounded like champagne when you popped off the bottle top. I still love an ice cold Beck's Dark -- for about two sips. Then the gaseous bloating begins. I hit forty and I could no longer drink beer because of that. That's when I became a black russian drinker. No bubbles. Posted by: RickZ at July 25, 2025 12:54 AM (gKDq2) 290

I lost a ton of my childhood this week. I met Terry Bolea at Hogs Breath in key west. I didn't want to go bother him, and my family said go do it. So I went up to him and said "Mr Bolea you mean a lot to me I just want to shake your hand". He said what's up brother what did you like? And we had a 20 min conversation of his bouts etc. Guy always had time for fans.

Wandered off to watch some vids. Wandering back for a moment.
I have my wisdom teeth, with no problems. The kids didn't inherit my jaw, apparently. Feel bad about that. I tell them they should have had a different mother. Ha ha? Genetics are funny. All my life, I've had this small triangular notch in the edge of my right ear. Thought maybe it got nicked when I was small or something. When our firstborn, daughter, was only a day old, I had her in my arms, and noticed she had the same small notch in her right ear. Seeing it, my hand actually went up to my ear, familiar from decades of washing it, to feel the notch, before I consciously thought about it. Amazing. Past my bedtime. G'nite, y'all. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon" Well, the general rule of thumb of drinking is stay away from sweet. But you have to go through that learning curve as a young person. Young people tend to mask the flavor of alcohol with sweet. Which is fine if you don't drink very much, but catastrophic if you spend the whole night on it. My wisdom tooth removal was mostly uneventful- I remember my dad's truck, like a still image, and waking up in my bed with a mouthful of bloody gauze.
What I also remember is walking in. All of the nurses, women 15-30 years older than me, teasing me about being an amorous teenager. I finally got them to tell me- a patient from the week before, a guy my age, went under anesthesia and starting flirting hard with all the nurses there. Apparently he didn't remember any of it and came back for a checkup the week after. He got freaked out when all these women his mom's age were flirting with him. My "lil bro" likes those hard cider drinks. Takes a lot of them to give a buzz, as he's morbidly obese.
Anyway, he came here for a visit & decided to switch to vodka/o.j. to save money. Oh, Lordy! So, he swilled down the screwdrivers like he'd usually do with his cider crap... and got totally butt-faced obnoxious blotto drunk at my house. Great. Couldn't just send him off-- his (3rd grader) kid was with him! Didn't want him to spend the night, so made him quit for a few hours & then go back. Yeah, the dude has a real problem... Of late, I've been following the earth's rotation, getting fascinated with the ebb and flow. The erf has been a little fast tear. DUT1, the difference between "astronomical time" (think of the prime meridian as the hands of a clock relative to the position of the mean sun) vs. Zulu/TAI (ticking at atomic rate), is now +60ms. It's increases a whopping 30ms since the start of June. Here's what DUT1 has done over the last 90 days, with 90 days of forward prediction: https://tinyurl.com/27m7qpuz And the length of the mean solar day over the past 90 days: https://tinyurl.com/2yzt29v5 Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at July 25, 2025 02:02 AM (w6EFb) 329
Interesting thing I've seen some on X claiming some "high sigma" in JPL's tracking of these earth orientation data, meaning the earth is doing something a little unpredicted. This is not to be unexpected, as there is an unpredictable component to all of this. But if true, it means some of those unpredictable factors are kicking in (possible mass moving around, earthquakes, mantle, core, etc, etc). No official word on that, though. I've had some bad hangovers in my time from sweet drinks...I haven't touched Southern Comfort in decades. My my worst hangover ever was from white wine. I put away almost 2 full bottles at a wedding, for whatever reason. I woke up feeling like my head was in a vise, and a stomach full of Drano. A true "praying for death" experience.
