Trump Announces "Massive" Tariff Deal With Japan, Cutting Rate from 25% to 15%

The deal includes an investment package of $550 billion.

Auto stocks soared on the news.

U.S. President Donald Trump struck a trade deal with Japan that lowers tariffs on auto imports and spares Tokyo from punishing new levies on other goods in exchange for a $550 billion package of U.S.-bound investment and loans.

It is the most significant of a clutch of agreements that Trump has bagged since unveiling sweeping global levies in April though, like other deals, exact details remained unclear.

As part of the deal, Japan will buy 100 Boeing planes and hike defense spending with U.S. firms to $17 billion annually, from $14 billion, a White House official said.
Japan's auto sector, which accounts for more than a quarter of its U.S. exports, will see existing tariffs cut to 15% from levies totaling 27.5% previously. Duties that were due to come into effect on other Japanese goods from August 1 will also be cut to 15% from 25%.
...

The announcement Tuesday evening sent Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index climbing almost 4% to its highest in a year, led by stocks in automakers with Toyota (7203.T) up more than 14% and Honda (7267.T) nearly 11%.

Wall Street opened higher on Wednesday, shoring up expectations of further agreements ahead of the fast-approaching August 1 deadline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 158.7 points, or 0.36%, at the open to 44661.12.

"I just signed the largest TRADE DEAL in history with Japan," Trump said in announcing the deal on social media.

How Trump's Economy Continues To Defy The 'Experts' And Shock The 'Panicans'

For the "experts," the rapid pace of the administration's economic agenda has been shocking. For President Trump, this was all a part of the plan.

By Zach Jewell

In the first six months of President Donald Trump's second term, one major theme has defined Trump's economic record thus far: success that surprises the people who are paid to predict it.

...

The latest numbers on the U.S. economy fly in the face of the naysayers, branded by Trump as "panicans." Late last week, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that June retail sales were up 0.6% from May and up 3.5% from last year. Food service and drinks sales jumped 6.6% from June 2024. Those numbers were, of course, better than what economists had predicted -- a phrase that has become a monthly tradition since Trump stepped back into the White House

According to University of Michigan surveys, American consumers expected prices to rise 6.6% this year. But so far, there's been no sign of inflation jumping through the roof, and even CNN had to admit last month, "Love tariffs or hate them, there's no denying inflation is lower now than when Trump took office."

The numbers don't lie: inflation under Trump has defied economists' predictions in nearly every month the president has been in office. In April, year-over-year inflation came in at 2.3%, its lowest annual rate in more than four years. The Consumer Price Index rose to just 2.4% in May compared to last year, which again was lower than what the "experts" predicted. Meanwhile, the Producer Price Index, which measures the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers, had its biggest drop in five years in April, falling 0.5%.

As inflation numbers continue to look good for the Trump administration, U.S. job growth also beat expectations in May and June while unemployment ticks down.

"During his first six months in office, President Trump has repeatedly embarrassed the panicans who predicted doom and gloom, from inflation to recession. Under President Trump, Americans have seen an end to Joe Biden's inflation crisis, multiple expectation-beating jobs reports, record tariff revenue collection, bond and stock market rallies, and historic investment commitments worth trillions that will cement America's dominance in cutting-edge sectors," White House Spokesman Kush Desai told The Daily Wire.

You won't be surprised to learn that that rule has been repealed.

yes and no. I think -- I don't have the numbers but let me just freeball it-- that we had very low standing tariffs on Japan. We imposed this 24-25% tariff as bargaining leverage. We've now settled on a 15% tariff, which will be permanent (or until we're fool enough to let the neoliberals back into power).

So yeah, this is lower than the temporary previous level but higher than the longstanding level that existed before that.

Trump is aiming for a baseline of 10% (or, I guess, 15%) tariffs on ALL foreign goods, while the neoliberal corporate cabal has fought to make it 0%.

From something called "Variety":

Jeff Daniels recently appeared on MSNBC's "The Best People" podcast, hosted by Nicolle Wallace, and expressed his wish for Donald Trump supporters to lose their money for forcing the country to endure a second term of Trump as U.S. president.

"I hope you're losing tons of money, those of you who thought this would be OK," Daniels bluntly told Trump voters. "My question is, what are you guys going to do about it?"

I get it, the economy is a powerful electoral force, Obama is the only president in my lifetime who managed to weather a bad economy and get reelected (although I am convinced he lost, in a real count).

So they want to lie people into believing the economy is bad, but that does not work. People don't react to things like that based on information, they react based on gut feeling. I am paying more for stuff, economy sucks. Claiming its bad won't change minds.

That's a game the left often plays, they'll ignore inflation and debt when talking about growth. Well, if their claims of "multipliers" to government spending were true you should see that in the after inflation/debt numbers right?

The Biden years were basically taking out trillions in loans to generate billions in economic activity.

Yeah, they made actual lists of people and families who were unclean based on criminal pasts or occupations. I've heard those lists still have some influence, even today. The vast majority of Yakuza came from families who were on those lists and had no legitimate way of becoming successful. Though to be fair, that's sort of a chicken and egg problem. If your family are all Yakuza, and your culture puts criminals on lists, then your family is going on the list.

WW2 they were every bit as evil as the Nazis, and every bit as murderous and brutal, they were just less efficient because they weren't German. For some reason (probably because Jews weren't involved and they dominated news and popular media) they were kind of given a pass.

___________________________

Go back a few months and you'll see what's going on here. Nippon Steel "acquired" US Steel in a very unusual agreement that allows US Steel to continue operating in the US with investments from Nippon...making the entity the largest steel manufacturer in the world. That pops up about 100,000 new jobs on its own in the US. Now, for financial reasons, the Japanese auto manufacturers will be making their vehicles here in a dramatic increase. More US jobs as a result. And, it's not just the auto business that gains from this. It's manufacturing in general.

Simply put, Japan doesn't have natural resources, so they need a proxy location to manufacture. The US is wealthy in resources. And, cutting out the resource import cost cuts their prices. Does the UAW get slighted in the process? Yes and No. It forces them to drop that EV nonsense and get back in the car business.

And both Japan and the US can counter China's effort to solidify South Amer. and Canada.

I find it fascinating that the Druids were a high ranking group of priests, judges, political advisors, etc, but they didn't keep any written record. Julius Caesar wrote they were literate in Greek, so it's not like they didn't know how. So they intentionally made no records, supposedly to keep their secrets. 184 Trump has done an amazing job in a very short time resetting the global trade table but it also makes you wonder what the hell have previous presidents been doing?

He has a completely different philosophy of foreign relations and economics than they did. They saw the tariffs and economic status quo as a way of influencing other nations and using US power and riches to shape the world into what they wanted.

Perhaps this was wise and it worked, perhaps not, we'll see. But what Trump sees is that this is not helping the USA, and is bankrupting us. So he wants to fix things so that the USA is benefitted and the world has to work out its problems on its own.

This horrifies realpolitik and American Economic empire guys, who see our efforts as what is causing global peace and spreading democracy. I think that they clearly have failed, but again, we'll see.

What is funny is that the same foreign people who screamed and hated American economic empire hate this even more.

If any other country did what the U.S. is doing, there would be a significant problem. But EVERY COMPANY in EVERY COUNTRY wants access to the American consumer. Now wants, NEEDS.

India has more people, but they have a protected market, and more importantly less money. Same with China.

If getting access to the American market means you have to prefer American goods over other countries...so be it.

And each domino that falls puts more pressure on India, China and Europe.

Imagine India saying, fuck this, opening their market to the U.S., in exchange for access to our market? China is then...dead. And India doesn't like and fears china.

The ground floor was gutted, but the mob didn't enter the second floor. They found a crate of Rolexes, saw Imelda Marcos' shoe room, and saw their room filled floor to ceiling with pictures of the Marcoses with every political leader and celebrity of the time. He told me they had separate bedrooms and they were labeled the King's bedroom and the Queen's bedroom.

When Marcos fled to HI, they flew out of Clark AFB. One entire C130 was filled with their loot. A second C130 was filled with their family members.

253 In fact, if we REALLY wanted to get the economy booming, we should enact a 100% tariff on all goods not made in the USA. We'll all be rich!

Posted by: Lamont Cranston at July 23, 2025 02:58 PM (w6p9p)

Reductio ad absurdum.

The trick is to balance tariffs against imports for each country.
You don't want to go too hard one way or the other in a perfect world.

Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, China, all use tariffs, but we can't?

Are their tariffs on imports damaging their economies?
They don't think so, obviously.

But somehow it's going to kill ours when we're the one doing all the importing?

This isn't that hard.
We don't live in any economist's perfect theoretical world.
We live in this one, with lots of tariffs to go around.

The legal eagles can weigh in on that, but I'm thinking that this was always going to be a heavy lift. Grand jury transcripts are very hard to release anyway, and any info from those proceedings don't have any defense rebuttals in there, so it would show the evidence in the worst possible light (even though it's probably pretty bad already). I always thought that this was a stalling tactic by Trump to get the pesky headline off the front pages. There's still nothing bad for Trump there, but I simply thought he wanted to move on to other matters.

(Guess how many cases he lost in his own courtroom)

and that was legal under Italian law.

This is, in effect, what Japan did: biggest example I can think of the old saying: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!

I'm of two minds on the Japanese Meiji Era stuff.

It's...really appealing visually. The banners. The clothes. There are admirable things about honor.

But, it's an outright tyrannical system of oppression that kept the low classes enthralled to the shogunate and its lieutenants without any recourse at all. The extended peace was accomplished through a very heavy application of a police state that kept the country from progressing beyond the medieval period for something like a century.

So, I'll play Ghosts of Tsushima and enjoy it while knowing I probably shouldn't.

Well, not really. The story of Japan pre WWII was full of the armed forces ignoring, defying, can couping the authorities. But the swords were cool.

Culminating with a border clash with Russia in 1939 where in the end Zukhov was sent out to organize a several hundred mile march across roadless terrain to destroy the Japanese forces in the disputed area. Thus a waning of the desire to expand in Asia versus against the US and European held areas.

It's all about transferring heat. As air is pulled from a conditioned space and pulled through the evaporator fins, heat from the air is transferred to the refrigerant circulating through the passes in the evaporator coil. The heated vapor is pumped through the compressor to the condenser, where the heat picked up in the evaporator plus the heat added by compression is rejected into the ambient air.
