38 The Portrait of Bindo Altoviti is a painting finished around 1515 by the Italian High Renaissance painter Raphael. It is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., United States. Bindo Altoviti, a wealthy banker born in Rome in 1491 of Florentine descent, was a cultured man with a strong appreciation for the arts. The subject's graceful, almost effeminate pose, combined with the pronounced contrast between light and shadow, is atypical of Raphael's portraits of men.

Is that how we create nation-states? Is it merely an exercise in negative reinforcement? A sibling of mine has a dog that chews socks. Should I tell her to try recognizing Palestine, so the ’doodle knows she’s serious?

“Recognizing Palestine” has indeed become some sort of standing threat, which I assume bothers Palestinians greatly. We’ll give you self-government, but only if the Jews make us so angry we don’t know what else to do.

Does the reverse work as well? Will Sir Keir welcome Israeli annexation of the West Bank if the Palestinians bother him enough?

This Raffaello guy, if he doesn't up come up with a case of syphilis and a drinking problem, has a shot, a real shot at dethroning that Kincade guy as the #1 shopping mall artist.

This painting is a mind blow. Such control over the dynamic range of the light, high and to the left, and how it plays out across Bindo's face and clothing. Never harsh, detail where it must be, shadows that make those details essential. The composition places the chin dead center and in immediate tension the right eye. Such subtlety, serenity. Great pick CBD. I can only partially imagine what it would be like to see this painting in a museum.

That's what my high school told guys in the late Sixties and early Seventies. No mustaches or beards either, and we all had to dress like young ladies and gentlemen -- dresses or skirts and blouses, khakis and collared shirts, no T-shirts or jeans at school. I kinda miss those days.

Sharp-looking car -- like a Jaguar E-Type's younger brother! I'd buy one myself, but the roads here are too lousy to drive a sporty small car on comfortably. Maybe someday . . .

I had two of the 2001 SEs (long story involving a semi.) The gearbox on the first one (only 6k miles when I got it) was smooth as silk. The 2nd one (like 29k miles on it when I got it) was ... notchy between 2nd and 3rd. Still better than most but just a bit off.
