Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Art Thread![]() Rosebud Cottage Thomas Kinkade Part of me thinks that Kinkade was a technically skilled artist without an ounce of talent, and he leveraged his skill into a multi-million dollar industry producing pablum that caught the eye, but was devoid of exactly the sort of stuff that makes people stop and stare at a good van Gogh or Caravaggio. But part of me thinks that the pompous art assholes who criticize Kinkade's work are smug elitists whose ideas about art have plagued us with the current modern art that makes many people want to grab a rifle and go up into a tower. And the idea that Kinkade is somehow diminished because he was commercially successful is an arrogant, disgusting, self-important reflection of their own failings, and a not-so-subtle call-out to socialism, and the thoroughly discredited image of the starving artist. Nobody can tell me that Caravaggio or Gentileschi or Vermeer would have remained true to art for art's sake and wouldn't have cashed in on making millions. Some of the world's greatest artists were commercially successful, and many painted stuff expressly for income. And it defies reality to assume that nobody else ever laid a brush on Raphael's or Michelangelo's or Rembrandt's work. Yes... art, at least to me, can be proof that God works through the hand of man. It can also be pretty pictures that please some of us. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I used to run a fine art gallery. We had a lot of high-end fine art, and a good good swath of what I deemed suburban sofa hangings. Kincaid is schlock, but pretty good schlock, his use of light, and the corny turn-down-the-ambient-light to see the internal illumination from the graphic is so hackneyed, I couldn't do it anymore.

Why is it that the modern "art" world scorns people who could actually draw and paint realistically, like Norman Rockwell and Robert McGinnis, or draw and paint idealistically and romantically like Mr. Kinkade here? And if I may add, CBD, I think the same sneer between high and low art applies to music, as well.
Bach is hailed by musicians aq a master, but was little appreciated in his own time and, IIRC, there wasn't a real review of his work until the early 1800s (spearheaded by Mendelssohn, I believe). Arthur Sullivan was feted in his day as the foremost of English composers, he grew rich off the success of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, but his music is dismissed as either candyfloss tune or (his 'serious' works) plodding, four-square 'churchy' echt-Victoriana. But I'm just an asshole commenter on a Smart Military Blog. I'm sure the rest of you can come up with better arguments. Kinkade is kitsch, and kitsch is as American as apple pie.
I'm 100% in agreement I don't like his style, or that it took over the zeitgeist for so long. But I've circled around to reflexively defending him against the art snobs, since they are so, so awful about condemning him. Screw the pretentious elitist art snobs that live off a trust fund, so they don't have to live by their art to feed themselves. Don't have to take the time and effort to research what art the masses want and make art to appeal to them. These are the same art snobs that refused to see that Norman Rockwell's illustrations were art, even if he did them for commercial purposes to pay the bills. First impression: scorn. Some relatives owned a fer real signed Kincade. I wouldn’t have nor hang it. Total kitsch. Yet, on the Wiki, he had a hard early life, some real talent and lots of drive. That he drained money from nice people with middle income, with art flooding the market, making it a non-investment- so it goes.

Good point about the greats possibly cashing in, if they had been presented with that devil's bargain.
I read a biography about Poe recently, and it posited the theory that had he gotten all the desires of his heart, we wouldn't have the brilliant literature from him we have today. And he might be forgotten, instead of one of the most celebrated writers of all time. He was a foster son/ward who hoped to inherit the Allan estate one day. (It's why he changed his middle name to Allan, to appeal to the patriarch. Incident work.) He wanted to be a southern gentleman. Allan refused and left him nothing. Poe realized gothic horror was the craze, and wrote a lot of gothic horror the masses would like. He made art for the masses. But he's such a genius he captured the themes and fears of humanity so brilliantly, and he wrote it so beautifully and skillfully, that those stories have captured our imagination forever. The book posited that had he gotten the soft life he craved -- inheriting a plantation and living the cushy life of a southern elite -- he would never have had to sink to the depths required to wrestle out his best work. I think they have a good point. Posted by: LizLem at July 22, 2025 09:58 AM (yq1WW) 143
I don't give a hoot in hell about art critics and their disdain for Kinkade's art is only one reason for my attitude. CBD's post about the reality of critics and commercial success is on the nose. The painters of the past that are considered masters were using their talents to make a living not for acclaim by people a century or two later.
I never had a problem with Kinkade's popular paintings. They are romantic, pleasant, relaxing, and nicely colorful. Yes, they are predictable but that isn't a crime. I've seen a lot of his earlier works. The man had talent. Posted by: JTB at July 22, 2025 09:58 AM (yTvNw) 144
It’s safe to say that a lot of today’s great musicians, both popular and classical, revere and are inspired by Bach, even some artists you may prefer over Bach. See some of Rick Beato’s interviews with great popular musicians. Bach keeps popping up as an inspiration for them.

Long time ago when I was taking art classes and otherwise developing my skills in llustration, I found a book by Kincade and a childhood friend, James Gurney, a record of them tramping around the country sketching. I eventually stopped pursuing my art goals, and not until I read his obituary did I realize who the famous Thomas Kinkade was. I didn't like his painting style and didn't pay that Kinkade much attention. But I sure love both guys' sketching styles. Gurney is still with us, and I think many of the Horde will be familiar with his work.

Random thoughts -
Interesting how snobbery and elitist attitudes emerge from all of us in some facet of our lives, even though many of us despise such attitudes when we see it in others. The disdain for Kinkade among some is a great example. So what if this isn't "fine" art? If people like it, then let them! I am guilty of this when it comes to some things (such as music, food, bourbon), and I am really trying hard to stop doing it. You want your steak well done with ketchup on it - go ahead. It doesn't make my preferred way any less enjoyable because of how someone else wants theirs. You want to drink Jim Beam white label mixed with Diet Coke? Have at it! And if you want to hang a Kinkade in your house - don't let anyone else make you feel bad about it. More importantly -- I saw some mentions of Bach. You can have J.S. Bach and Sebastian Bach -- I'll go with late 70s Catherine Bach, thank you very much! Posted by: Doof at July 22, 2025 10:10 AM (XUX2Y) 195

Money. Today we are awash with people that create all type of works and never make a dime. I am pretty sure 99.99% of us (yes, I am in this group) would jump at the chance to make Led Zeppelin amounts of cash at what we love to do. That Kincade made a boat load of cash as the painter that made shopping malls great is a non starter as a discussion point.
Great art is like porn, I know it when I see it. The reality is most work is not great; and yes, I am this group. Great artists change the discussion about what is Art: Louis Armstrong, Cezanne, or Shakespeare, and they manage to do this forever. Often, 50 years on the cream has come to the top; for me Kincade curdled on day two. Art snobbery. At the core of this is people trying to fill a void in themselves by often behaving like louts when it comes to their opinion about what is important art. There is two parts to art: The Art and Art Snobbery. The magic of Modern Concept Art is it has managed to do both of these at the same time; that is something. One of Kincade's hallmark features is the art snobs love to hate on his work; it is all tedious. Like what you like; in the end great art is what floats your boat. The Globe watched the Misrepresentation Middle School movie as well. It’s a documentary, but it hammers strong feminist and “gender justice” messages for school kids ages 11-14:
Women as sex objects Women/girls “in a disempowered position” Few female protagonists in movies women/girls portrayed as only seeking men, husbands, marriage, pregnancy boys should be trained to not be “hyper masculine” or “misogynistic” Middle school children are served images of upside-down strippers with little left to the imagination the “genderbread person,” who aims to show children how biological sex, “gender expression,” “sexual attraction,” and “gender identity” exist on a spectrum, which can be mixed and matched. The movie is not age appropriate for Middle Schoolers, and really should not have any place in school curriculum. It is pure propaganda. Posted by: SMOD at July 22, 2025 10:45 AM (RHGPo) 346

Thanks for the heads up. Turns out a new edition of 'The Artist's Guide to Sketching' came out a few months ago. About $13 at Amazon with a lot of 5 star reviews. Just ordered a copy. Posted by: JTB at July 22, 2025 10:55 AM (yTvNw) 391

Anna Puma - I am not the respondent you are asking, but I thoroughly enjoyed the first three episodes of My Dress-Up Darling Season 2!
The animators keep returning to the theme of acceptance. In Wakana’s case it’s acceptance that he loves cute things like the doll heads he is learning to paint. He finds cuteness all around him in the cosplay world and is learning, slowly, to accept that about himself. The love story is progressing as well, it’s just that Wakana thinks too little of himself. The latest episode with the cross dressing beautiful young man was all about acceptance. That young man was risking his place in society by doing what he does. I don’t think Westerners realize how un-Japanese this acceptance is. The people participating in cosplay are depicted as far more open to all the weirdness than a typical Japanese person would be, I think. Also the first episode opening with an entirely different anime for the first two minutes threw me. I thought I was watching the wrong anime! Auburn, N.Y. — A landmark rail-car diner that has sat perched over the Owasco River in downtown Auburn since 1951 will need to be relocated due to safety concerns.
The Hunter Dinerant, which closed for business on Dec. 31, was seized by the city of Auburn for back taxes in May. But city officials have determined it is at risk if there were to be a breach in the city-owned dam upriver from its location at the point where Genesee Street (Route 20) crosses the river. ----------------- I used to eat there when visiting my in-laws. Its owned by Biden's first wife's family - thus the Hunter. Posted by: pudinhead at July 22, 2025 11:04 AM (W3T6M) 426

She thought I was absolutely crazy for telling her to put salt on her watermelon. But she finally gave in and tried it and she couldn’t believe how good it was with salt. Kincaid's paintings were ok...but in the 30's there were artists who did similar also for profit. The prints were used for ads, calendars, etc. And they were affordable during the Depression for homes.
Many homes then had prints of Robert Atkinson Fox's paintings of cottages and English gardens. He also went by other names such as William Thompson. I know this because one of my grandmother's left me a large cottage/garden print after she died. Which then led to me collecting from eBay or antiques stores in the 90's. I have a large collection in original art deco frames. Some frames are chipped or worn, but I don't care. I used to look at this print at my grandmother's as a child when I was supposed to be napping (even then I did not like naps). The colors and light are often surreal, as are Kincaid's...but I think they are lovely. https://tinyurl.com/y278yw5m Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at July 22, 2025 11:13 AM (6PCLE) 430

I was listening to Dr. Drew on Michael Malice's podcast last week and he noted that modern woke society is set up to maximize the impact of people with personality disorders, especially narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). The way you break them out of it is to not affirm their bullshit and instead counter it strongly. His commercial success is what really pissed of the UN-successful ones. Yes, I think his art is … umm … 'nice'. It's certainly not Da Vinci, Braque, Cezanne, Van Gogh or any of the other luminaries. OTOH, it's nice to look at, well-executed technically, and is genuine professional-level artwork. Kincaid is certainly a better artist than any of the producers of so-called "modern art". Having dabbled a bit in landscape painting for the backdrop of my model railroad, I can sincerely appreciate Kincaid's use of light and shadow, the detailing in the flowers, and the portrayal of the clouds in the setting (or rising?) sun.

Fun fact: art throughout history has almost always been commercial, and the whole 'starving artist' cliche comes from a handful of artists in the 19th century who didn't work commercially. (Much of what you find in museums were commissions done by entire ateliers with the master's name slapped on it.) Commercial artists (Glasgow Four, Mucha, Warhol, etc) practically required an entire subgenre due to their commercial successes even as they have commanded respect as great artists. ("Graphic art" is grudgingly a thing)
