Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Mid-Morning Art ThreadMona Hatoum Referencing both the human body and rigid systems of abstraction, the installation Current Disturbance 1996 is made from an immense grid of over 200 cages, light bulbs and the amplified sound of electric currents. As the bulbs light up and fade out at irregular intervals, they sporadically illuminate the surrounding gallery. Inside each of the cages rests a single lightbulb, all interconnected via a central convergence. Another single bulb is suspended inside the structure, illuminating the junction box at the centre. The grid of metal cages sets up a contrast between the sense of systematization and the chaos of randomised flashing lights and the mess of wiring covering the floor. The tension arising from this juxtaposition of elements serves to intensify the feeling of suspended energy and instability, inspiring a certain discomfort in the viewer. There's more at this link, but even I am not cruel enough to subject you to it. This would be a mildly amusing installation if it were not taken so seriously. The description is laughable, using the post-modern technique of obfuscation by vocabulary. None of those descriptors make any sense in the real art world of evocation of beauty and emotion! I could see actual art created by using lighting but this is not that.
Hell I've seen examples where you set up lighting in such a way that you can play out a scene through shadows created by your lighting. It does seem that in the past ages that art became famous for beauty and technical talent and in the modern era it becomes famous for ugliness and a lack of technical talent. I suspect the answer to that for most people will be something from 50 years ago or more. Perhaps something from hundreds of years ago like the Sistine Chapel, the Mona Lisa, or a Rembrandt. Wife and I went to NYC for one night last week. One of the places we went was the Guggenheim. The current installation is modern and some of it was decent. A lot of it was inscrutable to me. (wife is an Art Historian, she seemed to get the gist). But, apart from the current show, there was the Thannenbaum Gallery which seems to be permanent. That was very cool. I actually recognized the names of all the artists. Quite an assortment. Picasso, Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, Renoir, etc. Made the 30 dollar ticket worthwhile.

Trying to be somewhat serious which is f'ing impossible.
Classical music went through something similar to this f'ing retarded concept art. After Beethoven every composer, to prove their artistic chops, kept pounding at blowing up tonality and harmony until they reached peak absurdity with the 12 tone system that essential had no tonal center. It is f'ing unlistenable. This is when God got pissed off and gave us 20th Century American Music and the backbeat. There is plenty of modern art (or art from that last 100 years?) that has artists producing solid works that communicate something about a certain time, place, and subjects that make your mind and heart go somewhere; that make you stand in awe at the originality, the singular vision of a particular artist. This whacky concept art has no discernable artistic center that I can find. It is goofy public masturbation. It is the visual art version of the unlistenable 12 tone music. I make my case with this 12 tone composition. https://youtu.be/uKakP5yMfsY Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at July 21, 2025 10:05 AM (NXz8h) 148

The key to solving Rubik's cube (without looking up the solution) is recognizing that the center tile on each face does not move. That tile defines the color for the eventual surrounding tiles. Experimentation then allows you to find strategies to move the specific corner and edge tiles to position them on their corresponding face.
