a pathetic, effeminate, better for teenagers 75 proof. And before you suggest that I shop around; this is a big brand, but the other ones are also bottled at that anemic strength.
Put the vodka in a metal bowl, and place it in the freezer for a few hours. Shave some ice, and drop some shavings in the bowl. Water in the vodka will crystalize on the ice shavings. As a fellow that lives, literally, not too far from the Bourbon Trail ? Its all what you like. Do you like a bunch of corn ? Some wheat ? Some rye, as you say ? It's all about picking some heavy starch grains or grass, and letting it ferment. Some say the water maters. Our water is very "hard" - lots of limestone. But you can do that in any batch process. I am not a fan of Scotch but enjoy Irish whiskey a bit. Yet, aren't they basically the same thing?
Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky, while both distilled from grains, have distinct characteristics due to differences in production methods and flavor profiles. Irish whiskey is known for its smooth, mellow taste, often achieved through triple distillation and a blend of cereal grains. Scotch whisky, on the other hand, tends to have a more robust, smoky flavor, often attributed to the use of peat-smoked barley and double distillation I find Irish whiskey to be kind of bland. 146 Bluing is rust.
They're both oxides of iron, but not the same. Bluing is a metal finishing process that involves creating a protective, blue-black layer on steel, primarily for rust and corrosion resistance, and also for aesthetic appeal. It's a type of passivation, where a chemical reaction with the iron on the steel's surface forms a thin layer of magnetite (black iron oxide), which helps prevent the formation of rust (red iron oxide). While often associated with firearms, bluing is also used in other applications where a durable, dark finish is desired Posted by: Archimedes at July 20, 2025 03:21 PM (Riz8t) 162
Don’t hand me a bottle of French vodka and expect me to thank you.
I’m not hosting a bachelorette party. This is not St. Tropez. This is Manhattan. And I drink to feel something. French vodka, Grey Goose, Cîroc, anything with an accent or a pear flavor, is not alcohol. It’s perfume for the tongue. It’s what people drink when they want to seem sophisticated but are terrified of flavor, consequence, and confrontation. Vodka is for people who fear complexity. It’s a blank slate in a frosted bottle. No finish. No courage. No story. Every sip of French vodka whispers, “I hope you like me.” Meanwhile, American whiskey doesn’t ask for approval. It walks into the room, lights a cigarette, and starts rearranging your priorities. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 20, 2025 03:24 PM (XV/Pl) 163

You think you’re worldly because your vodka has been distilled five times?
You know what else is distilled five times? Mistakes. But pour me two fingers of Booker’s, barrel-strength, 127.8 proof. Suddenly the air gets heavier. The lighting changes. The conversation sharpens like a straight razor against glass. That’s not a drink. That’s a ritual. Bourbon has character. Grit. A memory of fire. It was made by men who built things with their hands and didn’t cry about gluten. It tastes like oak, char, sweat, tobacco, and mild aggression. It is fermented clarity. And what does French vodka taste like? Emotionally neglected limestone. It's bottled for influencers, not men. It’s poured at clubs with LED menus and celebrity DJs whose fathers bought them a MacBook. It’s for people who order bottle service so they can feel something, anything, without confronting the spiritual hollowness of their kale-based personality. Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 20, 2025 03:25 PM (XV/Pl) 167
American whiskey is earned.
It’s not chilled. It’s not mixed. It doesn’t come in flavors. It comes in consequences. You don’t drink it to get drunk. You drink it to test your constitution. French vodka tries to erase you. Bourbon etches you deeper into your own skull. So the next time you think about bringing a frosted bottle with “Parisian notes” and a silk ribbon to my penthouse? Leave it at the door. And bring something that knows what it means to burn. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to sip 110-proof redemption and stare into the skyline until I remember who I am. Tulsi is promising more declassified documents this week and claims that intel whistleblowers are "coming out of the woodwork" because they are so disgusted at what was done. First things first. I want to exactly what happened. I have a pretty good idea but I want to see all of the documents. Bartiromo asked Tulsi today if the raid on Mar A Lago was done to retrieve documents related to the Russia hoax. That has long been my suspicion. The raid happened in 2022. It was made by men who built things with their hands and didn’t cry about gluten. It tastes like oak, char, sweat, tobacco, and mild aggression. It is fermented clarity. American whiskey is earned. It’s not chilled. It’s not mixed. It doesn’t come in flavors. It comes in consequences. You don’t drink it to get drunk. You drink it to test your constitution. Rust Bluing is essentially regular rust except that you boil it in water to covert Fe2O3 to Fe3O4.
That's like saying diamond is essentially graphite. Rust is typically Fe2O3 (iron(III) oxide), often with water molecules attached (hydrated iron(III) oxide) making it Fe2O3·nH2O. It is not Fe3O4 (magnetite), which is a different iron oxide. While rust can contain other iron oxides and hydroxides, Fe2O3 is the most common component Posted by: Archimedes at July 20, 2025 03:38 PM (Riz8t) 184

Interestingly enough, stripping bluing with a chelating compound like Evaporust seems to leave the fine rough surface that retains oil even though the steel will be gray.
I have a Model10 that was so rusted that a friend just gave it to me. I soaked it in Evaporust and got it completely functional again, even though now it looks more like stainless. Posted by: toby928 at July 20, 2025 03:39 PM (Y1Bj4) 187
49 Something seems to be happening with bourbon in the US. Allocated stuff from Buffalo Trace is showing up regularly in my area. I bought a basic Weller off the shelf for MSRP this week. Haven't seen it stocked her for many years. Same with Eagle Rare, which can suddenly be found everywhere here for MSRP. Still no Stagg, but EH Taylor small batch is available now, too.

That’s not a drink. That’s a ritual. Posted by: Thomas Bender ******************************************** Love Booker's! Probably my favorite bourbon. Booker Noe was Jim Beam's grandson, and a Master Distiller at that distillery. They told the story of Booker's whiskey at his funeral. Booker used to bring his friends a small jug of his private reserve at Christmas time. He preferred his whiskey to be aged 6-8 years, and bottled around 125-130 proof. Booker's wife also used to love making him a bourbon pork roast, which she would douse liberally with Jim Beam white label. One Sunday she couldn't find any Jim Beam in the pantry, so she grabbed a jug of Booker's personal stock, doused the roast generously with it, and threw it into their cast iron stove. The resulting explosion didn't just blow the doors off of the cast iron stove. It blew the screws out of the hinges. Posted by: Sam Adams at July 20, 2025 03:50 PM (X+xvk) 203
Yes thermite, of course, but say it was just a truck load of red rust? I ask because this happened when I was in grad school and the highway patrol shut down the road because of a chemical hazard! I got into an argument with a fellow grad student about how hazardous red rust would be. I thought it was already oxidized, so how much more oxidation would it undergo? Of course you don’t want to go scraping it up with aluminum scoops! Mind you, we were physics students not chemistry!

I took a 60-grit flap wheel to my Lodge stovetop griddle. You know what I mean, how Lodge cast iron is all rough? There are online apologists for it, but I finally got sick of tearing towels on the rough surface. I have an old Lodge number 5 skillet that's smoother than glass, but this modern stuff you got to sand down.
Sanding revealed deeper imperfections, which I don't care about. They give the piece excellent character. I did four cycles of seasoning on the stovetop, and my Lodge griddle feels smoother than glass and looks very attractive. The design is elegant and will last forever. I dunno. There's gotta be something to complain about around here. Oh yeah - Lodge apologists. Why do you want traction features on a non-stick surface, Lodge apologists?
