Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - July 16, 2025 [TRex]

20250716-SB091417 OKTdrone 3554.jpeg.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

[Top photo: Little Sahara State Park, Oklahoma (bet ya didn't know that Oklahoma had sand dunes!)]

***

I know what you're thinking. "I have been waiting since last Wednesday for another edition of the Wednesday ONT! But I can't remember whether ONT rules require pants?!" Fortunately, the Wednesday ONT has a libertarian streak and is reluctant to issue pant-related mandates or guidance. However, the Wednesday ONT would be concerned if you were trying to fit your pets for pants - especially if you had a pet centipede.

But whatever you do, don't leave your pants behind:

20250711-PghPolicePants.jpg

If you're in a part of the world where it is neither Wednesday nor overnight, the Wednesday ONT appreciates your indulgence and patronage.

A special hello to the lurkers - otherwise known as "emerging commenters." Glad you're here. Walk towards the light (of the computer screen). Happy reading!

Darth Vader's Main Lightsaber Set for Auction in Rare Opportunity for Star Wars Fans

20250716-Propstore-Darth-Vaders-Lightsaber.jpg

The character's screen-matched primary dueling lightsaber that was used in the films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi is set for auction from Propstore this September in Los Angeles. The item was held on-screen by Star Wars actor David Prowse and stunt double Bob Anderson and has a pre-sale value estimate ranging from $1 million to $3 million.

This lightsaber is said to be the only hero lightsaber from the original Star Wars trilogy to ever hit an auction.

The same auction will be selling Indiana Jones' Bullwhip, Whip Holster, and Belt,
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989 (Estimate: $250,000 - $500,000), a neuralyzer from Men in Black, and Sauron's helmet for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Beaver news:

Bear-Sized Giant Beavers Once Roamed North America, and They're Now the Official State Fossil of Minnesota

20250715-GiantBeaver.jpg

The giant beaver's journey to becoming Minnesota's state fossil has been a long and winding one. The saga dates back to at least 1988, when a group of third graders first proposed making the massive mammal the official state fossil, according to Minnesota Star Tribune columnist Jennifer Brooks. Since then, the proposal has come up again and again. Each time, lawmakers have said no - but that changed this year.

I'm torn between making beaver jokes and noting that the State of Minnesota must have solved all their other problems if they're worrying about state fossil designations. Why pick? Both are viable.

Old news:

Anyone remember this story?

In March 1999, a Waffle House patron in Mobile, Alabama gives a Florida lottery ticket to a server as a tip instead of cash. Patron often gave lottery tickets to the servers.

At this time, Server was a 28 year old divorced mom. She split from her husband in 1997.

Server wins a $10 million Florida lottery jackpot!

Server elects to take $375,000 a year for 30 years instead of all of the winnings at once.

Server forms a corporation with family members to split the winnings and avoid gift taxes.

Server's co-workers claim they had a verbal agreement to share any lottery ticket winnings and sue Server. After only 45 minutes of deliberation, jury finds for the Waffle House co-workers.

Server gets a new lawyer and appeals.

Server wins appeal, arguing the verbal agreement was invalid since the lottery itself was illegal in Alabama.

Patron who initially gave the lottery ticket filed suit, claiming there was an agreement for Server to buy him a new truck if there was a winning ticket. The suit was eventually dismissed.

Server's ex-husband decides he would like a share of the lottery winnings. He kidnaps Server and threatens to kill her. He takes her to an isolated boat launch in Mississippi. Server pulls a .22-caliber handgun from her purse and shoots ex-husband in the chest.

Ex-husband gains control of the gun and threatens to kill both of them. Server advises ex-husband to get medical treatment. They drive to a hospital for treatment. He survives and neither is charged with any crimes.

The IRS reviews Server's corporation and distribution of lottery proceeds. Because Server gave so much of her money to family members, the IRS determined that she owed a gift tax of $770,000. A court agreed.

Server reportedly lives in Biloxi, Mississippi. She remarried and works as a poker dealer at the Golden Nugget Casino.

The end.

(Facts may or may not be correct. You'd be amazed how many slightly different versions there are of the same story on the interwebs. Well, maybe you wouldn't be amazed...)

"This post is useless without photos" department:

Did you know that Playboy's Miss September and Miss October 1967 and Miss January 1969 were along for the Apollo 12 moonwalks?

While Gordon orbited in Yankee Clipper 60 miles above the surface of the moon, Conrad and Bean moved gingerly in their bulky space suits over the Ocean of Storms. Bending to pick up rock samples. Flipping their cuff checklists for the next instruction. Setting up the solar wind spectrometer. Check the list. Securing the seismometer. Checking the list. And... whoa!

Tossing her head and smiling was the stunning bare-breasted Angela Dorian, with the caption, "Seen any interesting hills and valleys?"

"It was about two and a half hours into extravehicular activity," says Bean. "I flipped the page over and there she was. I hopped over to where Pete was and showed him mine, and he showed me his."

Conrad had been joined by the charming and equally nude Reagan Wilson, her hair tousled, reclining against a bale of hay with the caption, "Preferred Tether Partner."

Just how did these lunar lovelies get by NASA? Easily. "It was part of the game," says Conrad. "Guys doing joke things. It probably goes back to Mercury. The pad leader, Guenter Wendt, always had some gag thing. So did the crews. I think Dave Scott was the first to think of doing something on the cuff checklist."

"It was a family thing," confirms Scott, backup commander for the Apollo 12 mission. "We spent a lot of time going through the checklist to see where we could insert something humorous. We got that centerfold off the newsstand. Then we had to get it printed on fire-proof plastic-coated paper."

For historical and academic purposes, full story and black and white photos here.

I've been listening to a lot of Randall Carlson's podcasts, and I learned about the giant beavers that roamed NA in the before time, which was just before the Younger Dryas, a mere 12,000 years ago roughly.

IIRC, they were big in the Southeast. So, around here 15,000 years ago, there would have been giant beavers.

The "megafauna" here in NA before that Younger Dryas extinction event was something. We had lions, big cats, elephants, even wolly rhinos. Not to mention the Dire wolves.

You know, I've been pondering this, thanks to listening to Randall Carlson's stuff. The current geological epoch is dubbed the Holocene, which translates sort of as "whole new". It's only about 12,000 years old, a twinkling of the eye in geologic time.

That's how much the earth changed from the end of the Ice Age and the Younger Dryas. It's a whole new world, and one that is very climatologically stable. It was an entirely different world when the mammoths, giant beavers, and dire wolves roamed NA. And the Clovis culture, which got wiped around the Younger Dryas, along with all those megafauna species.

63 Back when they finished the transcontinental railroad, nattily-attired tourists would ride across the plains shooting down the beaver-bears wherever they stood. They left them in bloody heaps across the prairie as far as the eye could see. Sometimes they took only a tongue.

And here's the thing, in the record they're finding things the climate idiots don't like to talk about. Erf's climate can change fast. Rapid changes during the previous interglacial periods. Our current Holocene is a stable period.

This shows that human influence on the climate is nothing compared to what natural processes, not well understood, on this Erf can do. This business that we're in a period of unprecedented global warming is just flat out bullshit. We're in a very stable period.

Lol. $2m. If you've got the kind of scratch to piss away $2m on a bauble, and *that's* the bauble you buy? Of all the baubles in the world?

Wow.

$2m could buy an entire supercar, or any number of precious works of art, or a golden toilet, or... anything besides a plastic and pot-metal dildo for hypernerd fan boys.

If a family member of mine paid $2m for that, I'd kick him square in the nuts just on GPs.

I've been searching on and off for a weeding tool I used as a kid when I walked beans. Since errant corn was one of the weeds, I used corn hook as a search keyword. I used a lot of other keywords but could never find what I was looking for. I would even look at the tools in farm stores, but with no luck.

Well, just tonight I tried again. And I'm talking using stupid long phrase to try and find it, like "long handled hand tool to cut weeds close to the ground" etc...

I found it, but only because I finally put "walking beans" in the search, which I stupidly hadn't done before.

It's called...duh duh duh...a bean hook. Wow, all this time and it's that simple.

So now that I found what it's called and where to buy them, I think I'll try to make my own.

96 Per Brave search (and likely "AI"):

"A widow's walk is a railed rooftop platform, often featuring an inner cupola or turret, commonly found on 19th-century North American coastal houses.

The term is believed to have originated from the wives of mariners who would watch for their husbands' return from the sea, often in vain, as the ocean claimed many lives.

In some coastal communities, these platforms were also called captain’s walks, as they were used by ship owners and captains to search the horizon for ships arriving in port."

Watching the IERS data of the saga of Erf's rotation. It sped up pretty good the last few days, but has now slowed back down. While the excess length of day figure is a day behind, the DUT1 values look like it slowed down today, the 16th, to a smidge of microseconds longer than 24 hours, and will be a little longer tomorrow.

Then it's predicted to go another tear, peaking around the 22nd. And a final speed up tear around Aug. 5th.

Imagine my surprise after watching a short documentary about it today and finding out that my memories of it were not inflated in the least. What the crew did to pull off that film was nothing short of a miracle and it still holds up perfectly today. Greatest racing film ever? YMWV, it deserves to be stand there with Ford v. 223 There would have to be multiple pairs of ruby slippers. Very essential to the plot. That's what the continuity person is in charge of.

224 Good old Oklahoma to start and end the post. Nice work, TRex. Yes, there are dunes here, but they're on the opposite side of the state from me, practically a different country.

The video had scenes, I'm presuming, from the Twister remake? Been close to several whirlwinds, including the one in Tulsa that confirmed for me that it sounds like a train rolling over your house. Lots of stories from that wild night.

My favorite, though, was shortly after we moved back to Oklahoma three decades ago, when a small dust devil was slowly going down the drive, and our 9 year old son got right in the middle of it, grinning and spinning.

To be clear it would not be in her interest to do so. Arguing that she pimped kids to Epstein AND Bill Clinton, for example, doesn't help her legal case.

And there is plenty of evidence - some of the girls have come forward with abusers outside of Epstein and we have the flight logs.

It's called...duh duh duh...a bean hook. Wow, all this time and it's that simple.

So now that I found what it's called and where to buy them, I think I'll try to make my own.

303 That is exactly what happens when someone is obviously going down for a crime. Offer evidence that there was something bigger going on to lessen thier sentence.

She didn't then and hasn't since. That's just a fact.

Was there something bigger going on? Maybe. Seems propable. But so far there is ZERO evidence and without evidence there is no case. That's how it works.

Well, she trafficked underage girls to Epstein, and he trafficked them to his "guests", no doubt after having had his way with them. Epstein was already dead when Ghislaine went to trial, so there was no value to her in trying to implicate him. And I am sure Epstein's runners had already told her to take the rap, and keep her mouth shut, or she would get what Epstein got.

We were promised everything. We were promised many things that have not come to fruition BUT Bondi made a production of the file release. All eyes were on Bondi and the release of the Epstein files and she blew it. The DOJ has continued to blow it.
Bongino's ready to leave because he doesn't want to lose credibility. Trump is handling this in the clumsiest manner since he was elected the first time.

If Bondi had Epstein alone it would be on the back burner with a half dozen other things. They brought this on themselves. If you had read Flynn's letter you would know that he is not trying to burn Trump but help him understand the mess and a way out.

Milankovitch cycles explain most of that, but there has to be some feedback mechanism that makes it happen very quickly, otherwise it would be too slow a change. It appears to snap back and forth.

IIRC, Green Sahara happens when perihelion occurs during Northern hemisphere summer. That is, earth is closest to the sun when the north pole is tilted toward the sun. As it is now, perihelion occurs in winter, around Jan. 4 give or take a day or two.

I don't think so. Trump knows who got him here and he knows the only way forward is to put these lizard commies down for two generations.

He is about bringing people in, and at the moment, it seems *everyone* is coming together to demand answers about Epstein.

If Trump was "attacking his base" over abortion or the border, that would be one thing. But he's not. He's busy trying to defund PP, restrict abortion, and close the border. Something else is going on.

364 I recall reading in Geology texts there have been incidents of some sort or another, instant ice age. Something about the remains of large wooly mammoths found in the tundra of Siberia and such, clearly flash-frozen, no mean feat for something weighing thousands of pounds. They are still edible, although historically fed to dog sled teams. Contents of stomach include flowers, buttercups and such. That’s a fast change in the weather. Maybe a large meteor strike or something like that.

The Younger Dryas Impact was probably a comet. A big comet that fragmented in several pieces, and produced a series of air burst impacts, maybe over several years (could be part of the Beta Taurid stream, which comes at us from the sun -- it would make it very hard to spot it coming at us).

Low density comet material (dirty snowballs, or maybe snowy dirtballs) don't make it to the ground. They make huge airbursts -- think Tsar Bombas going off, a shit ton of them, and don't produce craters.

There is evidence of this right here in SC, as well as Louisiana.
