Six Secret Service Agents Suspended Due to Failures at Butler Assassination Attempt

Finally.

They're being suspended without pay. They're not being fired, but when they return to work, they will have "diminished operational responsibilities."

Six members of the Secret Service have been suspended for failures related to last year's assassination attempt against President Trump at a rally in Butler, Pa.

The suspensions for the six agents ranged from 10 to 42 days, and they won't be paid while on leave, Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn told CBS News on Wednesday.

The agents will not be fired, but upon return to work, they will be placed in roles with diminished operational responsibility.

"We aren't going to fire our way out of this," Quinn told the outlet. "We're going to focus on the root cause and fix the deficiencies that put us in that situation."

I think you're giving up too quickly on "firing our way out of this."

...

A scathing Senate report on the assassination attempt released in September determined that "multiple foreseeable and preventable planning and operational failures by [Secret Service] contributed" to Crooks' ability to carry out the deadly shooting.

"These included unclear roles and responsibilities, insufficient coordination with state and local law enforcement, the lack of effective communications, and inoperable [Counter-Unmanned Aircraft] systems, among many others," the damning report read.

A second assasination attempt against Trump took place two months later at the president's Palm Beach, Fla., golf course.

Quinn insisted that the Secret Service is "totally accountable for Butler."

"Butler was an operational failure and we are focused today on ensuring that it never happens again," he said.

7 As I said at the time, we really only have two conclusions to draw here:

1) the secret service is nowhere near as "elite" of a protective detail as is claimed, and it's just been blind luck (and lack of attempts) that have kept (most) presidents from being shot or killed

or

2) The events of Butler PA were a huge aberration from normal procedures, in which case, it looks like the secret service was trying to get Trump killed.

Both scenarios have some pretty huge implications.

I hope those "diminished operational responsibilities" include washing Dan Bongino's car, petsitting for Stephen Miller, and fast food takeout service for any cabinet official who wants some at 2 am.

Both. Obammy years and DEI caused a lot of problems for the agency as well as moving the agency to the blob Homeland Security under idiot GWB.

Second, the order for Trump to get the third rate protection detail occurred suddenly after one of the Bidens (Jill mebbe) demanded top level security which caused Trump's normal team to be reassigned.

A lot of the Deep State are Dems/commies in the agencies and my guess is that whoever told Jill to go somewhere had the clout to likewise ensure Trump not to get good protection at Butler.

If we view DC as typical monarchies (albeit elected), the amount of money and power is easily worth killing people in order to retain those. And often the monarchs are reluctant to pry too much into those plots because it would end up destabilizing the government (see the Poison plot by Mdm Montespan in Louis XIV's reign).

Agreed. I think it is well within the realm of possibilities that someone maneuvered this scenario. (ie: putting the most incompetent / DEI hires in charge of this event, knowing that they'd fuck it up. Then when Trump survived the attempt, going in to CYA mode.)

But, for the same reason we'll never know the full story of Epstein or JFK, RFK, etc., I think we will likely never know the full story of what happened in Butler. As you say, too much power and money at stake.

There are several protection companies that also provide training for the protectees. The one I heard about also shoots the protectee with wax bullets if they get it wrong, just to drive home the point.

Employee disciplinary files are exempt from FOIA. And suspending them is actually a good precursor to firing them later for bad performance reviews. Other than Reductions in Force like in other agencies, if you want to fire a federal employee, they have substantial due process rights, even more if the firing 'stigmatizes' them (that gives them liberty due process claims as well as property). So it ain't as simple to fire ground level employees as those primarily involved in upper levels under Humphrey's Executor or Myers cases.

Posted by: nerdygirl at July 10, 2025 12:24 PM (0Htd1)

This is true. As a former employee of a federal contractor I worked with government personnel that routinely exceeded their statutory authority and interpreted contracts in an extremely dubious manner (always to the government's benefit of course) They were eventually caught and called out on it by their superiors-- after our company took several expensive hits of course. The folks that were caught were allowed to retire or jump to other agencies where I assume they continue screwing over contractors to this day.

To defend the Catholic church here a bit -- it was not THAT widespread, and the church treated the, ahem, incidents as moral failings, rather than legal failings.

The priests confessed their sins, did penance, and were absolved. The Church tried to move them to places where they wouldn't be tempted to sin again.

Not GREAT, and not how the church treats child diddling now, but it's not like the church was purposely trying to protect child molesters, even if that ended up being the outcome.

Unlike the government, who does purposely try to protect all kinds of miscreants and criminals, including the child molesting teachers who make up a not-insignificant part of the Dem Deep State through their very powerful unions.

I still cling to my completely amateur theory based on what i've seen the secret service do previously to the lapses at Butler; it is so outside what they've allowed, it had to be deliberate. My pet theory is the advance agent was in on it as was Mayorkas. People who play video games could have secured that perimeter better.

168 One of things that annoys me about the Butler PA incident is that the SS refuses to provide the name and background of the individual who was in charge of the detail that day. They consistently say Curran was there that day, so all responsibility would fall to him. I see Curran as a figurehead and an administrator. His presence could run interference on an Agent in Charge responsible for the specific protocol and application.

That's the person who would make the strategic calls on the ground. And, that person would have quite a bit of influence on whether certain steps were taken to assure safety of their charge. It is conceivable that a single person in such a position could purposefully ignore all the warnings, and actually enhance the potential for an assassination attempt like the one that occurred.

One could make the conjecture that these suspensions reflect peon agents merely did what they were told instead of doing their jobs...allowing whoever was in charge to run the show in a negative fashion.

10 years ago, I'd chastise myself for coming up with something like this. Pure fiction. Would never happen. Now, I think it's likely.

Both scenarios have some pretty huge implications.

A third possibility is their bench is shallow. Maybe they have two or three teams that are really good, but the benchwarmers like agent FUPA are terrible.

It's entirely possible the top brass at SS knew this and were intentionally putting their good teams on Jill and Joe and others, ensuring the benchwarmers would be put on Trump's detail.

It should never have been possible for some guy in Pittsburgh to fuck up that badly, if that's truly what happened.

If the SS is truly as incompetent as they were that day in PA, and the only reason all of our presidential candidates haven't been assassinated is due to blind luck and the fact that there aren't that many potential assassins living amongst us, then the entire organization needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

We're supposed to just accept that it's normal practice that blindingly obvious places for snipers to hide aren't covered, SS agents don't go on sloped roofs, SS and local police aren't able to communicate with each other, there is no coordination between and amongst agencies, SS agents need to call tech support to use their drones, and local cops (who have the manpower) are told to watch the traffic or sit in an office instead of covering the crowd, etc. etc.?

What if an actual foreign power wanted to assassinate our leaders? Seems like it would be incredibly easy to do.

Instead, they are being suspended for following the Agent In Charge's direction at the scene without question despite it being beneficial to the individual attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate.

About 2 months ago, there was a rumor going around that Trump had hired Christian Craighead, "Obi Wan Nairobi", the SAS guy who saved hundreds and smoked the Somali terrorist cocksuckers who attacked the DusitD2 complex in Nairobi a few years ago. All without orders or permission from the Limey government, which pissed them off enough that they threatened to court martial him, and wouldn't sign off on the book he wrote about the incident.

Personally, I doubt that it's true, but I can see Trump going that route.

A lot depended on when it was. When I started on October of 82, it wasn't that bad. The line went out to work the fields and came back in in the afternoon tired. By summer of 83, it was fights daily. They were hot, tired and poor impulse control. By '85, they had pretty much done away with the inmates working the fields growing crops and weeding. Fights went down to a couple a week. Stabbings were usually over a big rift between gangs and were rare. Rapes were few. Most was consensual. I caught more consensual than ever a rape.

Biggest reason why prisons ran smooth? The powers that be could really fuck them up.
FAFO.

24/7 lockdown in your cells & sack lunches & dinners. Same as after riots. My first day on a new unit, they'd had a gang fight/stabbing the night before. Unit stayed locked down for 45 days until they figured the bad blood between the two Mexican gangs burned out.

I've never seen CBD chide anyone for this particular delivery of unshortened links, only those that blow the margins.

Kinda missing the point here. Not functionality but blog policy is to use tiny url, or some other link shortener to avoid problems like blowing out the margins. Easy enough to do with links.

380 24/7 lockdown in your cells & sack lunches & dinners. Same as after riots. My first day on a new unit, they'd had a gang fight/stabbing the night before. Unit stayed locked down for 45 days until they figured the bad blood between the two Mexican gangs burned out.

381 I'm less sympathetic to Agent FUPA. While I can sympathize with, perhaps, being a junior agent or a primarily administrative employee suddenly shuffled into a critical position because of someone else moving pawns on a chessboard, the appropriate reaction to that is to protest to management that you're being put in an impossible position. My job is nowhere near that critical and more than once I've avoided being fired because there's a paper trail that says "I told you in advance I wasn't qualified for this, and that it was well outside my job description".

That's the incompetence she should be fired for.

I suspect that was the director of the SS who did that, and she resigned soon after it happened.

386 It should never have been possible for some guy in Pittsburgh to fuck up that badly, if that's truly what happened.

If the SS is truly as incompetent as they were that day in PA, and the only reason all of our presidential candidates haven't been assassinated is due to blind luck and the fact that there aren't that many potential assassins living amongst us, then the entire organization needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

Its even worse that that. Lets just grant that the SS at the time was a clusterfuck. This should still have been fully unknown to a potential assassin, especially the noob with no contacts Crooks. But he came the same day that the A team was pulled off the case? The chances of a shooter at a rally is low, since in all his other rallies they haven't seen or caught one.

So we have to buy that the shooter managed to noodle about with a scope and weapons on the site for hours without anyone seeing him and acting on it. The crowd noticed him, many times over. But the SS and LEO did not?

The other half of this equation is that some person neutered the SS AND another person vectored in Crooks.
