Speaking of Rubins, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is now online and going to town. Down at a high peak in Chile, they've released some of the first images:

Among other things, one of its missions will be finding more earth crossing asteroids, potential SMODs out there. It will also likely be able to find any suspected "Planet X" lurking way out there, but don't hold your breath, it will take a few years.

Heh! There was a pub in Oxford that catered to the rather large Spanish speaking kids that went to school there. I went with a Tex-Mex friend, Puerto Rican dude, and a few others. Obviously, the Tex-Mex and PR were the only Spanish speakers in the group. You'll be surprised, or not, to learn the the Spanish are hated by all the other Spanish speaking countries. Apparently treating others as peasant scum is tiresome. It was an interesting observation.

I took a Spanish class in college, and the teacher was a nice lady from Venezuela. she point blank said that she does not teach Spain Spanish because there's like 40 million of them (or whatever), and a billion Spanish speakers in the rest of the world.

If you look at Orbitviewer, you'll not some clusters right round Jupiter's orbit. Those are dubbed the Jupiter Trojans, and occupy the L4 and L5 regions. L4 is leading, and those are dubbed the "Greeks", while the trailing L5 cluster is dubbed the "Trojans". They name the biggest ones after Greeks and Trojan figures and names.

It looks like Rubin has discovered a whole bunch of new Greeks. They're gonna need a lot more Greek names.

Someone did a study back in the day and discovered that overall, chemists tended to have much shorter lifespans than other scientists (I think mathematicians lived the longest). Of course, that was back before modern lab safety. I'd guess that chemists today have comparable lifespans.

We call it "Worcestershire sauce" today, essentially.

Vinegar, onions, garlic, and anchovies, fermented for a couple of years.

Good quality garum was supposed to actually smell good. Cheap garum was reportedly vile.

Even the cheap stuff had tons of tasty glutamates (also found in soy sauce).

Going by my organic II lab, I can see why.

1) Guy managed to get chemical burns on his forearms because he spilled (phenol, I think) inside his fumes hood. Did not notice and went to write in his notebook and put his forearms in it.

2) I was making an amine derivative and the instructions said 'pour slowly' which i thought i did. Not slow enough. HCL gas filled the hood. Slammed the door down and waited it out. Melted my mechanical pencil to the hood tabletop. Also bled all the carbon pages in my notebook.

There was a huge USDA project in Panama that dealt with screw worm eradication. The Embassy ran it, and they had a German Short haired pointer (Casanova) who had been trained to sniff out screwworm infestations. He had an embassy badge and came to country team meetings with his handler, and was by far, the best behaved member of the embassy staff.

Got hit by a redlight runner on the way home from work tonight. Kid ran a six second stale redlight going >405mph, plowed into the left front quarter panel of my 2016 chargwr r/t.. i am okay, but i da,m near cried over my car being hurt. Kid's 1990 chevy 1/2 t9n pickup will be fine with a new radiator, bumper, headlight, and grill.

Dash cam for the win. Shows my green light, inside cam shows ,e checking the intersection to be clear, i proceed...then wham.

My poor nuclear blue baby. We'll see if the shop totals it or repairs it later this week.

At least i wasn't on my motorcycle. I probably would have gunned it across given when I saw the kid. If I hadn't stopped, he'd have driven that truck into my seat and trapped me under his leaking radiator.

No license. Truck was insured to his dad, not the kid. Bet USAA is gonna have fun with this one.

Mexico uses a lot of slang, has a lot of Indian inclusions, and treats almost everything as an obscenity as it is inappropriate. "Cogeme fuerte Chilango" does not mean hold me tight in Mexico city, unlike the rest of the world, for example.

Yeah, i may have a soft tissue injury in my middle back. I told the police and the emt medic i was in mild pain at the time. Took some inuprofin. Told the cop and the emt that because of the mild pain, i was not going to male a statement one way or the other about any injuries.

I'll wait to pull the trigger on a lawyer to see how badly the car is, and how cheap USAA is gonna be.

When I was in grad school, I had promised to accompany an old friend on a summer vacation touring Mexico. Before I left, I reviewed my grasp of the language with my office mate’s girlfriend, who was a grad student from Colombia. At our first lesson I began to read the material in my best Mexican accent. She stopped me, then said “Oh, I guess they do speak like that in Mexico!” I guess the Colombian accent is a little purer. I am given to understand that the Mexican accent is that way due to the influence of the Aztec language, Nahuatl, a tonal language. Thus all the ups and downs of the Mexican accent, in Spanish or English!
