On July 2, 1776:
July 2, 1776: The Second Continental Congress voted to adopt Lee’s resolution for independence. This is the day that John Adams thought should be celebrated with “Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” (John Adams to Abigail Adams, July 3, 1776). Between July 2 and July 4, Congress argued over every word in Jefferson’s draft of the declaration, making numerous changes. On July 4, Congress voted again – this time to approve the wording of the Declaration of Independence. They didn’t actually sign the document that day. After New York’s delegates received instructions from home to vote for independence (they had initially abstained), the document was sent to Timothy Matlack to be engrossed (handwritten). Fifty of the 56 men signed the engrossed Declaration of Independence inside Independence Hall on August 2, 1776.” Posted by: Cheri at July 02, 2025 10:01 AM (oiNtH) 126

Posted by: Pinhead at July 02, 2025 09:56 AM I'll just leave this very, very short story here: Nicholas Was… by Neil Gaiman Nicholas Was…older than sin, and his beard could grow no whiter. He wanted to die. The dwarfish natives of the Arctic caverns did not speak his language, but conversed in their own, twittering tongue, conducted incomprehensible rituals, when they were not actually working in the factories. Once every year they forced him, sobbing and protesting, into Endless Night. During the journey he would stand near every child in the world, leave one of the dwarves’ invisible gifts by its bedside. The children slept, frozen into time. He envied Prometheus and Loki, Sisyphus and Judas. His punishment was harsher. Ho. Ho. Ho. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at July 02, 2025 10:02 AM (dPfyF) 129

254 The Balkans War was basically a war of three religions.
Posted by: polynikes ======= True but hidden behind those three religions was a lot of history of bad blood caused by the Turks. Croats and Slovenians were Roman Catholics that were on the front lines of the Hapsburg fight with the Turks, Muslims in Yugo land by and large were in cities and converted. They both attacked and oppressed their fellow ethnics on behalf of the Turks. Essentially they were viewed as traitors by the Serbs and the Croats/Slovenes. Then you have the Serbs who fought endless battles, mostly losing, to the Turks and ended up being slain in mass, wives, sons, and daughters sent into sexual slavery and the rest oppressed by the Turks so Turkey could have a foothold into Europe. Putting all these people after Versailles into a country filled with ethnic hatred was a silly idea. And WWII made it worse as ancient hatred came alive again with new grievances between the groups. Posted by: Smell the Glove ======= Depends on how the deal treats the trans shipping goods from China. For the most part, Vietnam (and Canada/Mexico) has become a conduit for scrubbing the Made in China label by adding bit of assembly or packaging then sending it on to the US. There are some wonderful books about Eastern Orthodox Spirituality including "The Way of a Pilgrim" and a book about an Eastern Orthodox priest sent to a Soviet Prison camp. I think his name was Fr. Arsenal (?) and he brought great comfort to the other prisoners.

Diddy is a disgusting pervert.
But the people who participated in his freak off parties did so knowing what was going to happen. Or what was likely to happen. There is a racial aspect here. The whole Epstein thing was deeply secretive about the details and the participants. Diddy got all the sordid details thrown out there. I don’t care. Some People are disgusting perverts and if you choose to be associated with them, that’s your choice. But don’t come crying to me when disgusting shit happens to you. Posted by: nurse ratched at July 02, 2025 10:55 AM (/3Exi) ___________ Agreed. Diddy’s lawyers want him to just be able to walk out of courtroom even though he’s facing a possible (ha ha) 20 years for the transporting prostitutes across state lines charge. Government lawyers pointed out to judge that when Diddy was arrested, there were drugs in his hotel room even though he knew he was facing these charges. Judge wants letters from both lawyers, explaining their reasoning for either releasing him on bond or keeping him in jail.

314 Whatever became of the Whigs?
Posted by: Boss Moss ====== The Compromise of 1850 undid the Whigs in very short order. At that point, the South became run by the Dem fire eaters who wanted the spread of slavery to new states and secession if the North tried to stop it. So Southern Whigs faded away politically--they were older, more unionist in sympathies, and became a rump faction of moderate Dems in the South preaching caution. The Northern Whigs, after the Compromise, imploded into a mass of minor parties--Free Soilers, Anti Masonics, Know Nothings, etc. These minor parties were largely single issue types and regional which caused a rapid consolidation after the Republican Party got started in WI so by 1856, they ran a CA John Fremont, a military hero who did credibly against James Buchanan for prezzie. By that time, all the minor parties in the North consolidated into the GOP, the Southern Whigs were now moderate Dems and served as a brake on the fire eaters for a time. Putting all these people after Versailles into a country filled with ethnic hatred was a silly idea. And WWII made it worse as ancient hatred came alive again with new grievances between the groups.
