The Hyperemotional Left VS. The More Rational Right
We have all seen it, ad nauseam. The ardent leftist screaming and ranting and raving about the topic de jour, because the left has convinced its shock troops that emotion and feelings and simple volume, complete with weird body language and gestures is a perfect replacement for considered, rational argument.
Sadly, that is not limited to the rank-and-file of the progressive movement. I's political leaders are long on emotional appeals and very, very, short on logical arguments to buttress their political philosophy. For instance, it has become axiomatic, and a meme, that any Republican or conservative policy will hurt women and children! What is really telling is that they have extended that into their personal lives, because the line between their political philosophy and their emotional lives simply does not exist. Many of us have liberal friends and family, and I am willing to wager that most have not cut off contact with them, absent some ridiculous and ghastly emotional scene in which their sentiment and passion overwhelms their sense of family or friendship. I have family and friends who are on the left, and while we have disagreements about most of what is going on in the political world, it is beyond my understanding of the human condition how someone can reject people who really matter simply because of politics. And there's the rub! It is not simply politics for much of the left; they have internalized their politics so that it is part of their emotional well-being, and has become a part of their psyche. When one can't differentiate between the personal and the political, that's a problem! Dennis Prager has written and spoken about what he calls "The micro and the macro." Simply put, he does not allow his political philosophy to intrude upon his personal relationships. That is wise. For instance, in my life, the macro would be the horrid stances that Homosexual Inc. take about marriage and promiscuity and adoption and Gaza and on and on. But I have homosexual friends, and I cannot imagine attenuating our relationships because of those politics. But the left is different. They will happily demonize anyone who is not rigidly in step with their stances on...everything! Who knows...maybe there is a physiological difference between conservatives and leftists. Is there some brain chemistry that allows us to make those delineations, and leftists do not have the biochemical capacity to differentiate between friend and foe, because their politics are the only thing that matters?Comments

Only recently started hearing from my brother. This is since the whole COVID dust up. We keep the conversation confined to sports and family. If politics even gets sideswiped when we talk, I shut it down. It's better this way.

Nice take CBD. I don’t understand it but the situation you’ve described is clearly real. I’ve noticed a gender gap… women who are by nature more emotional (and that’s a good thing BTW…. I’m very grateful my wife is more sensitive and caring than I am)… they’re also more susceptible to arguments from lefties like “we can’t throw grammie over the cliff”

Nope, haven't cut off any friends, or family. Some of the family have chosen to not attend family events because of politics. Discussions can be animated, but, measured not personal. Still, some, a few, have chosen to not attend. They're still welcome and informed, but..... I just accept it.

Suppose I went to an astrophysics convention and proclaimed that the sun orbits the earth, and I had unwavering belief of that based on science that I'd read or had been provided.
At first the other attendees would patiently explain that my view is incorrect and show that it's an absolute fact that the Earth orbits the sun. Do I listen to any of that, having been so thoroughly indoctrinated, or do I get emotional about all of the wrongness I'm being told and just call it some White Power Conspiracy, demand to "be heard," then cut off all of those horrible people?

No. Musk is complaining that fossil and coal are getting perks but not alternative energy solution, especially solar. Musk and many others have pointed out that China is making a major successful transition to national solar power.
Read the articles pro and con about this. Some of it is beyond me but Musk isn't stupid.
And Musk doesn't need our money.

I have relatives who supported Dems many years ago because of union-related issues, but there really hasn't been a dime's width of difference between my family members politically despite marriages, children and deaths changing the membership over time. Political discussions are mostly affirmations of each other's viewpoints.

What I imagined upon hearing those words was some leach illegal taking more of what is not theirs and making their kid collateral damage to their illegal entry, along with all the grift going to the NGO and back to the DNC. I will also say that everything has gotten more political in the last 20 years (especially the last 10 years since Trump came down the escalator)
For instance, my very best friend has been my friend for 30+ years. Our friendship is based on work (where I met him) and very similar personalities and shared sense of humor. We’ve never really talked politics and yet always have plenty to talk about. It turns out that he’s Muslim… he knows I’m a committed Christian. It’s never once been an issue… we have a mutual respect built over decades.
Sadly I’m not sure that a friendship like this could even begin in this day and age

Because Saudi Arabia benefits from having an active subduction zone conveyor-belting organic sludge down into the oil cooking zone. Most North American fields are relics of when that part of the continent was a plate margin. Gulf of America may be an exception.

My Father's Family were Virginians... one of the Brothers went North at the start of the War... was a school teacher... rest fought (5 Cousins were in Mosebys Raiders, 1 Brother in 1st VA Cav)...
After the war he apparently tried to move back to VA, but after only a couple months, he moved to Iowa... and the Family was never really together again as far as we can find.
Found out when a guy from that part of the Family, got in touch with my Dad... was an Old Retired guy, and everywhere he went he kept his ears open for our last name (not a common name).

Ken Burns was on Rogan promoting the American Revolution series that is coming in November as the first civil war. One story he told was of a man that killed his best boyhood friend in hand to hand combat. I expect if you really want answers you would have to dive into situations and correspondences like these. There are people that study civil wars, genocide, war and such. I believe dehumanizing (unpersoning) is one of the steps in the pattern. Good luck researching if you really want to go there.

I'm starting to think that John Cornyn won't be running for re-election either, although he hasn't said anything along those lines. For one thing, he's 20 points behind Paxton in the polls; but I think people misunderstand the actual reason. What voters are most pissed off at Cornyn about is that after he went to DC, he's never showed his face in Texas again, and seems not to give a damn about what any of his constituents think or want. Sure Paxton is a populist conservative, but even more importantly, he's in the state, traveling around, and talking to supporters and voters *every* *day*. While Cornyn sits up in DC and obviously does not give a damn.
If Cornyn cared, it's way past time for him to start putting some serious time into reconnecting with his state - but so far he hasn't made even a glimmer of an effort. Which leads me to think that he never will.

The title character goes on adventures good and bad through the world and the book is filled with allegory to existing social and political unrest in pre Revolutionary France.
At the end, Candide, like Voltaire himself actually, decides to focus on tending his own garden rather than trying to be the philosophical light to all others. Healthy attitude.

BBB was the last bill of any consequence (good) that will pass the Senate this Congress. That was true before Tillis' announcement (and Cornyn's seemingly likely announcement). That was kinda the whole point of trying to use reconciliation for as many policy changes as possible (which is not new, just a more stark situation now).
All of this is pretty much unsurprising. Trump will have to do any good he can do solely within the confines of executive authority (which of course is being wildly assaulted by the "judiciary").

This RATHER than a salaried public defender.

Gross exaggeration on the part of dead Taliban or Iraqi. Wiki has the numbers if you care to look for both. At the high end, about 460k from a disreputable Lancet study where AP, no fan of the war has about 100k which directly include insurgents. Afghan war which ran longer was about 176k total, most of which were combatants.
U.S. military 7k.
And you have the subtract how many Kurds, Shia, etc. that Saddam would have slaughtered had he been unhindered with possibly the more homocidal sons of Saddam inheriting the family business. Then you have the Taliban famous for all sorts of slaughter of minority groups like the Northern Alliance which was interrupted by the US occupation etc.

There was a time when my ego was big enough to tilt the world on its axis, and I would furiously debate anybody over any little thing. I wasn't exactly a superstar when it came to emotional self-regulation, and I could rationalize some shit in ways that haven't held up well.
It's not the same as being a leftist, but it's similar. With me, it was an individual thing, with leftists it's more of a group dynamic.
I have no regrets about leaving all that behind.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with at least part of this post. I believe that a conservative maintaining friendships with people on the Left is a terrible idea, akin to a battered spouse defending her abuser. Remember the goals of the modern Left, and what your "friends" vote for and want to see happen: your property seized, your country dissolved, your wealth redistributed, your children and grandchildren mutilated and sexually assaulted, your religion defiled and destroyed, and more. They vote for this, and work for it to happen. They do not deserve friendship, or even common decency. To say that their political beliefs don't matter and to consider them "friends" is suicidally naive.

Whereas, the former will hold that his Conservatism is to conserve something more ultimate than the party.
