The Hyperemotional Left VS. The More Rational Right

We have all seen it, ad nauseam. The ardent leftist screaming and ranting and raving about the topic de jour, because the left has convinced its shock troops that emotion and feelings and simple volume, complete with weird body language and gestures is a perfect replacement for considered, rational argument.

Sadly, that is not limited to the rank-and-file of the progressive movement. I's political leaders are long on emotional appeals and very, very, short on logical arguments to buttress their political philosophy. For instance, it has become axiomatic, and a meme, that any Republican or conservative policy will hurt women and children!

What is really telling is that they have extended that into their personal lives, because the line between their political philosophy and their emotional lives simply does not exist. Many of us have liberal friends and family, and I am willing to wager that most have not cut off contact with them, absent some ridiculous and ghastly emotional scene in which their sentiment and passion overwhelms their sense of family or friendship. I have family and friends who are on the left, and while we have disagreements about most of what is going on in the political world, it is beyond my understanding of the human condition how someone can reject people who really matter simply because of politics.

And there's the rub! It is not simply politics for much of the left; they have internalized their politics so that it is part of their emotional well-being, and has become a part of their psyche. When one can't differentiate between the personal and the political, that's a problem!

Dennis Prager has written and spoken about what he calls "The micro and the macro." Simply put, he does not allow his political philosophy to intrude upon his personal relationships. That is wise.

For instance, in my life, the macro would be the horrid stances that Homosexual Inc. take about marriage and promiscuity and adoption and Gaza and on and on. But I have homosexual friends, and I cannot imagine attenuating our relationships because of those politics.

But the left is different. They will happily demonize anyone who is not rigidly in step with their stances on...everything!

Who knows...maybe there is a physiological difference between conservatives and leftists. Is there some brain chemistry that allows us to make those delineations, and leftists do not have the biochemical capacity to differentiate between friend and foe, because their politics are the only thing that matters?

Hi CBD.

I as a rule fall with nurture over nature in most things. To me it's a generally learned issue where a person doesn't have the internal ability to conceive of any ideas or concepts different than his own. I don't think it's biological. I think it's that being brought up in safe spaces coupled with mass media reinforcing one particular viewpoint is what's damaging.

Posted by: WitchDoktor at June 29, 2025 12:10 PM (IcEkX)

16 Nice take CBD. I don’t understand it but the situation you’ve described is clearly real. I’ve noticed a gender gap… women who are by nature more emotional (and that’s a good thing BTW…. I’m very grateful my wife is more sensitive and caring than I am)… they’re also more susceptible to arguments from lefties like “we can’t throw grammie over the cliff”

Another related thing I don’t understand: TDS… I think Trump broke a lot of brains. Why I don’t know…. But it seems to be incurable and it makes smart people stupid and nice people mean (I stole that from Mark Davis)

Posted by: LinusVanPelt at June 29, 2025 12:10 PM (WnEm5)

17 A larger percentage of the liberal left is certainly more socially and emotionally maladjusted.
Is it because of their politics, or are their politics such because they're maladjusted?
I vote for the camps they all seem to fear so much! We can help them!

20 This is because the left uses their ideology as their religion. They're obviously very passionate about it. Passionate to a fault. There are so many similarities with the jihadi's running around beating and killing "the infidels" who don't bow to their ideology and the left.

Read the articles pro and con about this. Some of it is beyond me but Musk isn't stupid.

And Musk doesn't need our money.

Musk is also pointing out the concerns that the US cannot tolerate the continued spiraling debt and he doesn't believe that the BBB will down the road lead to the deficits demise.

I'm on the fence because there are 2 people, Trump and Musk, each very smart in different ways, who are drawing opposite conclusions.

Posted by: free tibet at June 29, 2025 12:21 PM (1wtUm)

47 Their politics are their religions.
The long march brought it into churches, then turned churches into skin suits.
Government schools always taught conformity, but about 30 years ago they began teaching depression, anxiety, and self-hatred through "environmentalism" (also an end times religion).
That was not successful in pitting everyone against each other (ALL humans are the enemy), so they turbocharged the racism and sexualization.
Now we have a culture of zealots who have as their raison d'etre a constant parade of public masturbation, which is all these people are doing: the yard sign Calvinism and the polemics correcting speech and screeching about those causes du jour.
All the virtue-signallers and the screechers are doing is jerking off, and demanding an audience and applause while they do, because it has been "normalized".
And it is every bit as attractive and enjoyable as when any other mental patient does it in public.

49 Blue states have much longer longevity
Have higher incomes - taxed at European rates
Are better educated - credentialed, maybe. Educated, no
Have lower rates of suicide - so?
Have lower rates of crime/incarceration - because governments in such states want crime to be legal

Have higher housing costs because people want to live there - people who want to live in such places acquiesce in the destruction of their liberty, and are unfit to be free, and are incapable of self-government. (h/t, TX Dec. of Ind, 1836)

72 I worry that raising the limit on SALT to $40,000 gives states a target. They want to help us all become itemizers.

73 Every child in school in our state gets free food regardless of income.

+++
In my state they also force every child to have a fruit (of the grows on trees type). Then they look at all the untouched fruit and lament the tons they throw out. Recently they "solved" the problem by collecting the fruit and shipping it off to shelters. Maybe they eat it, maybe they don't but they no longer see the waste so they feel good.

76 The only breaks oil and gas get are depletion allowances.
Wind will never be viable.
Solar is only viable on small scale.
We only have a few hundred years of fossil fuels we're told... until the next big find.
If you throw out the CO2 and anthropogenic global warming crap, then there is no reason to even look at "alternative" energy, except on a very small scale (e.g. a lumber mill burning scrap wood for fuel).

78 I've lived in Democrat dominated states most of my life. It would be next to impossible not to have a few Democrat friends.

But what the Democrat Party is turning into with this next generation is not something I can tolerate. People like AOC and Mandimi are not Democrats, they are Communist wearing a skin suit. They hate everything about this country and are determined to take away my rights and freedoms.

I have no problem cutting this trash out of my life and doing what I can to oppose them at every turn.

79 Leftists don't have anything else in their lives. No families, no hobbies, no sense of community. No religion, but if they do it's just an extension of their politics.

Conservatives have things that stabilize their lives so that not everything is some kind of cultural and political struggle. It's good because we're more sane. It's bad because we're not always scheming.

It's healthy - and demanded of a free people who engage in self-government - for people to engage in politics. What is unhealthy is when politics becomes everything, and usurps religion, relationships, and much else besides.

88 Communism (which the "The Left" has adopted) is actually an inversion of the Judeo-Christian Ethic. Thus, it is a religion that masquerades as compassion for the poor, but since Communism only focuses on the material, it does not recognize the value of personhood: people are only things to be used to achieve "Heaven on Earth (tm)". It also requires the commission of the Sins of Pride, Envy, Theft and Anger.

That's why True Believers have such an emotional reaction to attacks on Communism. Since it is a religion, utilitarian arguments are going to fail.

147 107 I have no data on this and am wary of bringing up the larger subject, but here goes.

The US Civil War. I am told there were families where members fought on opposite sides.

Did they generally unperson each other?

Honest question. My instinct says they didn't, perhaps because battle and war were both viewed differently, but I don't know.
Posted by: WitchDoktor at June 29, 2025 12:45 PM (Mmf4/)

My Father's Family were Virginians... one of the Brothers went North at the start of the War... was a school teacher... rest fought (5 Cousins were in Mosebys Raiders, 1 Brother in 1st VA Cav)...

After the war he apparently tried to move back to VA, but after only a couple months, he moved to Iowa... and the Family was never really together again as far as we can find.

Found out when a guy from that part of the Family, got in touch with my Dad... was an Old Retired guy, and everywhere he went he kept his ears open for our last name (not a common name).

Well what do you need to do psychologically to kill former friends, family and other people?

Ken Burns was on Rogan promoting the American Revolution series that is coming in November as the first civil war. One story he told was of a man that killed his best boyhood friend in hand to hand combat. I expect if you really want answers you would have to dive into situations and correspondences like these. There are people that study civil wars, genocide, war and such. I believe dehumanizing (unpersoning) is one of the steps in the pattern. Good luck researching if you really want to go there.

151 Reconciliation has nothing to do with appropriations, CRs are just (well, used to be) short-term placeholders that straight-line prior FY appropriations until the current/new appropriations bills are passed.

Of course like everything else CRs morphed into a crutch/dodge/device for avoiding discussion/debate, or accountability from votes on amendments and individual bills.

So there's no effect on likelihood of a CR because the BBB passed - every cycle has reconciliation and appropriations (since 1974).

And speaking of appropriations bills, the House Appropriations Committee mark-up of immigration-related stuff that just happened is pretty much a trainwreck. Voice votes (no accountability), adopted what were literally policies under the vegetable.

152 It's multifactorial, but I think these are the lead suspects:
1. Those without God trying to fill the hole left in their souls with anything resembling a belief in the transcendent, that reinforces their need to feel virtue.
2. Those rendered anxious, alienated and confused by ADD modernity (social isolation, constant media streaming) who become susceptible to leftist propaganda, as a means to focus their anxiety on the hated out-group, which is created by a narrow, more cynical class. (Mattias Desmet's theory)
3. Those insecure about their social status (not wanting to be the Omega monkey) who find a way to lie to themselves that status doesn't matter and/or (quite inconsistently) to increase their perceived social status through a sense of pseudo-virtue.

157 We have all seen it, ad nauseam. The ardent leftist screaming and ranting and raving about the topic de jour, because the left has convinced its shock troops that emotion and feelings and simple volume, complete with weird body language and gestures is a perfect replacement for considered, rational argument.

Its been estimated that one-third to half the population does not have that "inner-monologue" that lack of verbal stream of consciousness handicaps them from decision-making , self-reflection, emotional regulation and task planning.

They tend to "think" in images, abstracts (CT, DEI, etc), and emotions.

I hear war is hell. People do things in war that go against their souls, and nobody who survives it is unharmed.

Regardless of who it is, if you take a human life, and you weren't a sociopath going in, you killed your brother. You can tell yourself all the things you need to, to be able to live with your actions, but you still did it.

204 When you entire political party is made up of cliche groups singularly focused on a single issue, the only influence you can generate is by allying with other cliche groups singularly focused on another single issue.

This creates a problem in that the fundamental basis of their strength in numbers is totally predicated on a non-substance oriented alliance. So, without substance, they are forced to approach issues from an emotional point of view. This leads to hypocrisy, and non-sensical stances. It's, also, a fertile field for spite against their opposition whose display of universal critical thought and substantiation belittle their current status.

It's how you end up with gays (who are routinely persecuted by Muslims/Arabs/Persians) joining their cause without substantiation. It's not about the issue. It's about relevance. It's about the spite. It's about joining a large group knowing those same players will support your message when it comes center stage.

That is more a leadership strategy where the elites of these groups decide coalitional strategy than of their component members. Not much different than coalitional governments in parliamentary systems. This is very common, and goes back long before social media. The guy's out there hustling and doesn't have a lot of time to maintain his social support system. Soon his social network is actually his wife's social network, and when she goes, so do all his "friends." And it happens so gradually you don't even see it until the trigger get pulled.

232 I'll have to respectfully disagree with at least part of this post. I believe that a conservative maintaining friendships with people on the Left is a terrible idea, akin to a battered spouse defending her abuser. Remember the goals of the modern Left, and what your "friends" vote for and want to see happen: your property seized, your country dissolved, your wealth redistributed, your children and grandchildren mutilated and sexually assaulted, your religion defiled and destroyed, and more. They vote for this, and work for it to happen. They do not deserve friendship, or even common decency. To say that their political beliefs don't matter and to consider them "friends" is suicidally naive.

It all leads to the same place: "No, mama. He's really a good guy. He just gets mad once in a while. It was my fault for not being supportive enough. I know he really loves me and won't do it again..."

251 I'm starting to think that John Cornyn won't be running for re-election either, although he hasn't said anything along those lines. For one thing, he's 20 points behind Paxton in the polls; but I think people misunderstand the actual reason. What voters are most pissed off at Cornyn about is that after he went to DC, he's never showed his face in Texas again, and seems not to give a damn about what any of his constituents think or want. Sure Paxton is a populist conservative, but even more importantly, he's in the state, traveling around, and talking to supporters and voters *every* *day*. While Cornyn sits up in DC and obviously does not give a damn.

If Cornyn cared, it's way past time for him to start putting some serious time into reconnecting with his state - but so far he hasn't made even a glimmer of an effort. Which leads me to think that he never will.

Binary thinking is part of what got us to where we are now. I would recommend reading Candide by Voltaire (I think actually his greatest work btw). The title character goes on adventures good and bad through the world and the book is filled with allegory to existing social and political unrest in pre Revolutionary France.

At the end, Candide, like Voltaire himself actually, decides to focus on tending his own garden rather than trying to be the philosophical light to all others. Healthy attitude.

The problem is that they cannot ever be wrong, or their ego will dissolve and they will be crushed. It is an entirely emotional way of defining themselves.

Therefore, they have very short memories, they work only in the here and now, so that they won't ever have to face the consequences of their past decisions for others or themselves. Things "just happen." None of them are ever their fault. If something bad happens, they are quite sure it is because of those nasty conservatives being mean.

They are, developmentally, either toddlers, or psychopaths. Always self-serving, hedonistic, with no moral compass outside of their own need to feed their egos.

I don't have homosexual friends, I don't see how you end up with them unless you are way too tolerant of bad behavior. I did have one friend (not close) who got into a throuple with a guy and his wife...yes, both...and he got cut out of our circle pretty fast. I do have homosexual relatives, not much I can do about that.

==================

I don't understand the rationale here, but according to someone who knows, in his county you can get "indigent status" -- which he applied for and just GOT -- which qualifies you for a private attorney who volunteered (or will be appointed) and whose fees will be set and paid by the court. This RATHER than a salaried public defender.

So he qualifies for a private attorney paid by the taxpayer rather than the county employee whose turn it was.

But the bottom line is, he is now officially indigent.

Gross exaggeration on the part of dead Taliban or Iraqi. Wiki has the numbers if you care to look for both. At the high end, about 460k from a disreputable Lancet study where AP, no fan of the war has about 100k which directly include insurgents. Afghan war which ran longer was about 176k total, most of which were combatants.

U.S. military 7k.

And you have the subtract how many Kurds, Shia, etc. that Saddam would have slaughtered had he been unhindered with possibly the more homocidal sons of Saddam inheriting the family business. Then you have the Taliban famous for all sorts of slaughter of minority groups like the Northern Alliance which was interrupted by the US occupation etc.

So one cannot say how many Iraqi or Afghan deaths would have occurred if the US had not invaded because my guess is that the distribution would simply be non Sunni deaths in Iraq and non Pashtun deaths in Afghanistan instead of Sunni deaths in Iraq and non Taliban deaths in Afghanistan.

294 259 Since the Fall of Man, it’t been good and evil. No other explanation.

Actually, there is: There is no conflict among those who
do not desire the unearned. Ambitious Men will NOT be Ruled. Productive Men will NOT Stagnate.

TRUE. A free and productive people have nothing to gain from war, and, in fact a great deal to lose.

Does that mean we should not only sponsor our Adversaries but ACTIVELY DEFEND THEM AS WELL?

Is there a wall high enough, an island remote enough to dissuade a people who have been lied to and cheated out of a future worth having. Guess we are going to find out!

Precisely Trump's point lost upon the purposefully ignorant world: You think you are alive because you can fight? You are alive because what I've done for you -- Vlad Drakul.

Evil is never defeated in a direct conflict -- especially if convention mandates it to be so.

The Deliberately Evil will never conceive that The Good can (and will) employ their own tactics upon them, to defeat and destroy evil via a different Kind of Evil. Like it or not, the world is not ready for such a demonstration -- but in retrospect only too obvious.

History will not miss them when they are gone. PERIOD.

I'm cool with that. Maybe you weren't as much of a dick about it as I was.

If I was really convinced that you and I both really, really mattered, I might not be cool with it. There was a time when my ego was big enough to tilt the world on its axis, and I would furiously debate anybody over any little thing. I wasn't exactly a superstar when it came to emotional self-regulation, and I could rationalize some shit in ways that haven't held up well.

It's not the same as being a leftist, but it's similar. With me, it was an individual thing, with leftists it's more of a group dynamic.

I have no regrets about leaving all that behind.

297 293 Plus, millions of people in the region who wouldn't be dead.

People, under the sway of the libs, Liars, and LOOTS are OK with the 'plan' no matter how horrific and devastating. Because behind it all, all three of the aforementioned are raking in cash upon the piles of bodies.

But if just one person dies, that's not part of the plan: PEOPLE JUST LOSE THEIR MINDS.

Why? Because LIBs hate the man who has a Dollar more than them, that that dollar belongs to them, and someone, somewhere, made money off something they were unaware of.

viz.
"Every aspect of our lives must be subjected to an inventory" -- Shameless Politico THUG, Nancy Pelosi'09 in Red China.

LIBs plead for a Morality which holds COMPROMISE as its standard of Value, making it possible to judge Virtue on the basis of the number of Values which one is willing to Betray.

What price their Vision? Yeah, just a 'little' bit more...

300 I'll have to respectfully disagree with at least part of this post.

Well said Pennsyltucky. I agree. The divide with the Left goes far beyond mere differences of opinion. It is unbridgeable in my opinion and only one side can win. And that's our side. Their side winning is national suicide.

Yes, its the reason why good relationships have to have boundaries. You can usually tell during courtship whether a prospective partner is willing to work with you towards that, or whether they're "fiercely independent".

Posted by: Cow Demon at June 29, 2025 05:58 PM (vm8sq)

309 The left rejects the existence of God; to them, there is only the material universe which they believe can be controlled to make anything real if power is applied. Thus, politics is everything to them. There is only power, nothing higher. And so there is nothing but politics. And politics can make Utopia (or whatever they want) real.

Those who disagree are therefore preventing the achievement of the Utopia they imagine. Their solution is to use power to suppress others.

Meanwhile, those who disagree generally accept humans as flawed and unable to even correctly imagine a perfect world. So they are able to get along with people better even as the left seeks power over others.

310 This is not hard. Ask a Conservative what is ultimate. Ask a Liberal the same. Odds are the latter will say "the party" or the like. Whereas, the former will hold that his Conservatism is to conserve something more ultimate than the party. If it's deity or the traditions that inform his decisions (answers crowd-sourced from our ancestors).

If you attack Conservatism, you just attack a 2ndary thing standing before the God of our Fathers. If you attack Liberalism, you attack the very golden calf they bow before.
