First World Problems

Screenshot 2025-06-21 at 7.23.55 PM.png

The past three summers have seen me falling behind on yard work. And oh boy do I have projects planned. Both on paper and in my mind.

My current project is to clean up stepping stones. I'm also planning on installing several new 4"x 4" x 8' for bird feeder stations. Although I have a fair number of lawn and garden tools I do not own a post hole digger or a lawn edger attachment.

So I called the local company whose name is, "Owner's Name Rentals, Sales & Service". I asked if I could rent a lawn edger and power auger. Well unless I had a tractor with a PTO they didn't have an auger for me. What about an old fashioned post hole digger? That wasn't there either. So I decided the bird feeders can wait.

The sidewalk edger? It is an item that may or may not be on their Wish List. I then asked where I might find such equipment. I was advised of a national chain hardware store approximately 45 minutes away that has an outstanding rental outlet.

Hmmm 90 minutes of drive time? I don't think so. So with a couple of shovels, some elbow grease and sweat, I was able to save a few bucks, keep the earth green and clean up those dang stepping stones.

Right after we moved here we told the guy at Home Depot's rental center that we wanted an auger. He asked what for and we told him we were digging holes to plant several vitex (chaste tree) plants. He asked where we lived and when we told him he said, "Auger won't do it. You're going to need a jackhammer."

He was neither kidding nor exaggerating. It's the only way you can dig any deeper than 2 or 3 inches in our yard.

There is now only one place that still offers those thin plastic bags we used to find (for free) at the store. They are perfect for dumping my vacuum debris into. The alternative is using the ones they charge 9 cents for and I for damn sure don't want to pay for those damn bags.
Happily the one place is the Class VI store on Ft Lewis. (Military liquor store) Thus, supplies are sufficient the next month or so.

54 I had an old "brick" path out in the back yard that was a broken ankle breaker, so I pulled it up and relaid it with salvaged concrete paver tiles. I found out later, when I made a smaller path that the best thing to do is make sure there is a 1/4 or 1/2" space between all the pavers tp sweep in crushed limestone or crushed limestone mixed with sand as a sort of crappy mortar. It keeps the weeds and grass down.

I am going to have to dig up the first walkway and reset it since the grass is coming up from the tight joints, and it is really hard to pull.

134 "What about an old fashioned post hole digger? That wasn't there either. So I decided the bird feeders can wait."

If you are looking to put in top mounted feeders, I use black Iron pipe. I use 3/4" or 1" depending on size of feeder, three sections of pipe, two couplings and a flange to attach to the bottom of the feeder. Attach the coupler tightly to the pipe to be buried so the threads are not damaged by the hammer blows. Set the second coupler fairly high so squirrels can't aim for it to get over the squirrels guard, but low enough for ease of detaching the feeder for cleaning without fiddling with the flange.

Setting the feeder this way makes it easy to move occasionally around the yard.

In new subdivisions contractors will use the whole area as a dumpsite thinking they can bury everything deep enough. Broken equipment, generators, whole vehicles. One problem is giving food to termites, when they dump a bunch of lumber, depending on how it was treated. Also as stuff rots it can start the soil caving in.

My neighbors and I dug up all sorts of junk, along with giant rocks typical of around here.

I've let it go for too long and I can't take it anymore (not going to blame my wife, not going to do it...) We moved from a house outside the city limits to a house just a few blocks from downtown. We can hear city parades and festivals from our porch. We have great neighbors (helpful but non-intrusive) and we are enjoying being able to walk to church, the library, parks, and restaurants. It's been a good transition for us, especially having a smaller yard as our yard work ambitions have decreased.
