Derangement Under the Sea Cafe

goblinshark.jpg
A goblin shark. A weird creature that lives
deep in the abysses of the sea.

Only living in open oceans with depths of at least 4,265 feet, goblin sharks are rarely observed or recorded while alive. Scientists believe the animal only comes to the water's surface at night and spends most of their life living in nearly-complete darkness.

Goblin sharks are not fished commercially and are mostly captured by people fishing other species.

The only living member of the genus family Mitsukurina, the goblin shark's lineage dates back 125 million years.

Nicknamed the "living fossil," goblin sharks are believed to be on average three to four meters in length, though a female goblin shark measuring six meters long was caught in the year 2000.

A fifteen-foot hurricane storm surge buries a beach town in water.

Puffin enjoys a swim.

Someone's getting lucky tonight.

Hippo wants to meet his admirers like I met Nigel Farage at the Trump Hotel.

Cat dressed up in costume.

Happy mama dog cuddles her puppy.

Dog goes shopping in the pet aisle.

The sassiest bulldog.

Dog fetches a duck for his mistress.

Dog hangs out with strangers in a hot tub.

A belated Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there.

Dogs reach an agreement after a tense negotiation.

An oarfish, a rarely-seen creature that usually lives a mile under the ocean, comes to the shore for some reason.

It's a red-lipped batfish and apparently it's real.

In recent days, amid the conflict with Iran, the IDF's Oketz canine unit has assisted in rescuing those wounded or trapped under rubble at missile impact locations across the country.

The military says Oketz has deployed a team whose dogs have undergone special training to locate trapped people at impact sites. The team is made up of both male and female troops.

Additionally, the IDF says the LOTAR counter-terrorism school has dispatched climbing, rappelling, and rescue instructors to missile impact sites to assist with rescue efforts.

The LOTAR team has used drones to scan damaged buildings to provide an accurate picture for Home Front Command search and rescue forces, the army adds.

Home Front Command troops have been operating at several impact sites in recent days, rescuing civilians and recovering bodies from under rubble.

I once had a similar situation. Mrs. Wrecks and I were returning home in the late evening when we were stopped by a red light on a deserted street. Crazy guy jumps out in front of my 4Runner with a crazy look on his face and begins pounding on my hood. I wasn't going to wait there to get shot or whatever so I disregarded the red light, pulled a hard right, and attempted to get around him. But he held on to the 4Runner and begin approaching the riverside window. Then he wasn't there anymore. Mrs. Wrecks got our and said I had stopped with my tire directly on his leg. I backed off his leg and called 911. As the ambulance approached, he got up and attempted to flee, none to quickly or gracefully. I could clearly see my tire tread on his lower leg. The police came and got him into the ambulance. I wasn't charged because because 1) the cops were well familiar with him and knew this was the kind of thing he did and 2) I had prosecuted a case in which the totally innocent defendant chick had accused one of the cops of all sorts of impropriety and the cop was

The video showing heavy traffic in Tehran appears to be recent, likely from June 16, 2025, based on news reports of mass evacuations due to Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders. Sources like CBS News and Reuters confirm similar scenes of congestion as residents fled. No credible evidence suggests the footage is old or fake, and Iranian authorities haven't denied the evacuation. However, given the conflict's intensity, misinformation is possible, so caution is warranted.

And the people executed by running over them with tanks. And the Kurds who he gassed with the chemical weapons he got to use on the Iranians. And the other Kurds he could catch. And political opponents and assorted minorities that wouldn't shut up and insisted on some sort of political autonomy.

Outside of them, yes it was a shining example of wonderfulness in the sandy hole that used to be the Baathist middle east.

Infamous Dem-run city descends into Mad Max hellscape as streets are filled with apocalyptic races and explosions

Oakland was once again turned into a dystopian Mad Max-style hellscape as cars and fireworks exploded during multiple street takeovers in the Democrat-run city.

At least one person was left critically injured as several major intersections were shut down by street 'sideshows' in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Numerous cars were set ablaze, fireworks were thrown and businesses were vandalized as at least three unsanctioned car shows took over the California city.

Hundreds of feral onlookers cheered and screamed as the city descended into lawlessness in scenes reminiscent of the post-apocalyptic movies starring Mel Gibson.

Estimates of how deep Fordow's main complex is maybe 90 m under rock. That exceeds even the GBU-57's penetration depth. Shockwave damage could get there, but it would be limited.

So, this would have to be a "seal off" type of damage plan. Use these big boys to try to collapse the entrances and access tunnels and all that.

I got interested in the physics of this a couple days ago, and had Grok get on it, doing the various calculations.

On the small scale, imagine what would happen if you tried to drill a hole in the dirt by repeating shooting bullets at the same spot. The first few hits, you're going to make a little crater, and blow out some material, but soon, it all starts falling back in, and all you're doing is just churning loose dirt.

The principle scales up as well in similar fashion.

These bunker busters do two things. One they accelerate to high speed, ~ Mach 1 or so at impact, and use kinetic energy to penetrate the material. Once they reach that depth, a high explosive is detonated. That's sort of a hybrid approach. Pure kinetic energy, then explosive energy. In the limit of more and more energy to get deeper and deeper, there is no real difference between pure kinetic energy and the hybrid.

Within the limits of what is practicable about that, ~100m under solid rock is pretty good protection. In the limit of maniacally throwing, say some hypersonic "Rod from God" at the target repeatedly, you make a big crater, wide but shallow, and all the energy of later strikes just goes to heat. Eventually, you make a little puddle of molten lava in the bottom of the crater.

And it still doesn't get that deep, just radiating heat away fast at the molten rock temperatures.

To get down to ~100 m of rock, you need something really big, initially. Think small asteroid strike. A "mere" 100m diamter chunk of rock moving at 50 km/s would do it. That would make a crater down to about 200 m in solid rock.

It would also have an impact energy of ~380 MT of TNT (~ 8 Tsar Bombas), and wipe out a 100 km radius around the target. It wouldn't be and ELE dinosaur killer, but it would be a Heap Big Nuking.

Think that city had the world's highest per capita income of any major city in 1960. And note: every cent of that wealth came from things produced (not from a foreign company sticking a pipe in the ground and getting oil out, the proceeds from which the government on the site took a huge %).

Lots of wheels turning in Detroit's decline, of course, but the 1960 data point is striking and relevant.

A little trick there. With precise timing, you try to make the second (or third) penetrator hit before the ejecta from the previous blast can settle back down.

That will get more depth for the second and third hits, but after a second or so, the first ejecta cloud starts coming back in. You only buy a little more depth with that. For shallow targets, this can work well, but for deep ones, it doesn't get you there.

Prior to 1942 Oakland was a solid, nearly crime-free, middle-class city.

Then (not to get to racial about it, but reality is reality) tens of thousands of African-Americans flooded in to th ecity to get work in the shipyards and rail yards in WWII, to take the places of the men who had all been drafted and shipped overseas.

Everything was fine 1942-5, with 100 employment--but then after the war, the soliders returned, the military-related port jobs dried up, snd suddenly you had tens of thousands of unemployed African-Americans all crammed into one area. They did not return to the home states (mostly Texas and Louisiana), but stayed in East and West Oakland.

Slums quickly developed, crime rose, and then the '60s happened with radicalization and the Black Panthers. Rioters and looters destroyed the ghettos multiple times, and it's been downhill ever since then.

No, I don’t think we should (or will) but American boots on the ground, or even directly attack Iran ourselves. But we will (and should) contribute intel, arms, and money to destroying a regime that’s murdered Americans, done everything it can to hurt America, and destabilized the Middle East to American detriment. Get rid of these rat fuck pedos once and for all.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that the sudden loss of power at the Natanz Nuclear Facility in Iran, resulting from Friday’s airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force, may have destroyed some of the roughly 14,000 underground centrifuges, which are are fragile and can break if they aren’t shut down gradually. Additionally, an Israeli official said there were indications that the underground portion of Natanz may have imploded, though he cautioned that additional assessments were needed, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

360 New Superman looks gay.

He acts like a kid and gets the hell beat out of him constantly in all the trailers, its a very odd choice of publicity: come see Superman get slapped around like Tina Turner! And there's only one (1) scene of him doing something heroic in each trailer. That and watching buildings collapse... enough of that in Superman movies. For crying out loud.

It might be great but the bits we've seen look too James Gunn-y to me. And that has been my concern the whole time. I can live with the dog and the stupid bots but snarky jokey Superman getting into an argument with Lois and being crushed like a bug just doesn't tickle my Superman itch.

368 AOP, pretty much what you said. The "entombment" option for Fordow would at least temporarily solve the problem, with management change or not. Could be more than temporary too. Without any tending or management, what I'm guessing is in Fordow starts to become a problem on its own after a while. It's not like storing bullets in the garage on the bottom shelf of my tool chest, which I do. Anyway there's a certain elegance to destroying the access. It may lead, over time, to a very bad radiation situation in the work spaces - but they'll be sealed off as well as any planned nuke waste site that exists. And very very difficult to re-enter and make use of anything. Could put a bow on it and move on.

Well, if I were an evil dictator planning an underground nuke lab, I would certainly have it equipped with some escape routes. Man-size tunnels that run maybe a mile or so, and don't quite breach the surface at the remote end. The last two yards of rock are drilled and loaded with a stable explosive. In the event of need, the escaping workers would proceed up the tunnel, take shelter in a side tunnel, and light off the charges. With luck, they break through to surface and make good their escape.

If you want to be autistic about it, I mean President Trump. There's no way that the US Navy has kept sea lanes open for the better part of a century only to have a failing regime in Iran shut them down while he stands around with his dick in his hands. He'll give the order to put an end to whatever they're pulling, partly because it's obviously right and necessary, but also because he just held a celebration for the 250th anniversary of the US Army, and there's another for the Navy coming up, and he's not going to make them look feckless either.

Is that clear enough?

First, you need a rocket powerful enough to do one of two things to enable the Uranal probe to progress to the approach phase:

B. Penetrate the Underwear Barrier.

Next, an active guidance system is needed that permits the Uranal Probe to navigate an approach path through the Hairs of Buttcrack and the very hazardous Dingleberry Belt.

Next, a Uranal Probe Retro-Propulsion System is required that shall be capable of transiting the Probe out of Uranus, through the Dingleberry Belt, the Hairs Of Buttcrack, and penetrate the Underwear Barrier (if necessary).

420 Azerbaijan? Doubt that. But actually it is quite interesting , the question of where would former regime actors flee to. It's not like Baby Doc Duvalier, or any number of African dictators/strongmen, fleeing to Paris in earlier times. The only significant Shi'a populations outside Iran are Yemen, Lebanon, and Iraq (the biggest by far). Hazarra in A'stan are a small and weak group. Each of those destinations obviously has, um, complications.

And that's for top dogs. Rank-and-file thugs of the IRGC will probably face instant justice if things fall apart, and nobody's (willingly) taking those guys.

Moscow would be a funny and delicious outcome for the bigs. They're about as alien and despised a sort that exists for Russia - their relationship has been purely $$ and typical Russian beggars-can't-be-choosers when pathetically trying to imitate a global power.

445 Call me skeptical on the whole "rods from God" thing. Every single erg of energy released when those tungsten rods fall out of orbit was put into them by burning rocket fuel. Plus a whole lot more rocket fuel was burned to lift the vehicle itself, and the yet-to-be-burned fuel. A huge amount more energy expended getting those rods into space, than ever will be delivered by delivering them to a target.

By contrast, Little Boy and Fat Man were delivered to their targets by B29's with a fuel load of only 6750 gallons. And delivered a metric fuckton more of a whuppin' on their targets than a "rod from God" ever could.

457 "Germany, France. Russia and the British all knew the mullahs were bat shit crazy but grab the money while you can" - Ben Had

Absolutely. Our "allies" have been key to enabling/worsening the worst MidEast enemies (Iran and Iraq) at key moments. Iraqi sanctions, in tatters for years, were near collapse in 2003. Among the bonus prizes for others when they did collapse was a French deal for the Majnoon super-giant field, with a % double or triple the historic norm for foreign development/production. An enormous windfall.

The free-rider problem has been among our biggest for decades. The Mansfield Amendment was a thing, and a fight on the Hill, that is older than most of the population. It hasn't been easily solved because there is no easy solution. Side note: pushing NATO members to increase their defense spending is a move that is decades past relevance, and actually ridiculous given the realities of their political will and now even their political cultures.

461 Well, if I were an evil dictator planning an underground nuke lab, I would certainly have it equipped with some escape routes.

462 Russia has been a "special project" of Britain since the Crimean war, and maybe before. Russia has been an economic competitor of Britain, and Britain has funded and fomented a lot of wars and internal political strife against Russia in the Balkans, in Crimea, in the Dardenelles with Turkey, and in and across the Northwest of India and Afghanistan.
A lot of more anglophile American movers and shakers have also had a hard on for Russia starting from the late 1800's, with the attitude that they were a closed economic society that would not allow political or economic change, and worse would not allow American or British goods to compete freely with Russian goods.

One tidbit I only recently heard. Sweeney of course wanted to report back to Tinian about the mission, but initially couldn't get the radio guys at Yontan to let him call home! He had to go to Gen. But that’s not all—this guy didn’t stop there! He also shot State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in a twisted, targeted attack on Democrats.
Here’s the kicker: Boelter showed up dressed as a COP, complete with a creepy silicon mask, body armor, and a black SUV with flashing lights to trick his victims. Security footage shows him banging on doors, yelling, “This is police! Open up!” before opening fire. Chilling, right? He even had a hit list of other public officials in his car, along with an arsenal of AK-47s and a 9mm handgun. This wasn’t random—this was a PLANNED assault on our system!
Now, he’s facing federal charges for murder, stalking, and firearms crimes, with the DEATH PENALTY on the table. Minnesota’s soft-on-crime state laws couldn’t touch that, but thank goodness for federal prosecutors stepping up!

517 Operation Eagle Claw was a Rube Goldberg disaster waiting to happen.

Because the DoD was not willing to fast track a USAF SAR helicopter that had mid-air refueling, the US Navy's CH-53Es were selected.

This forced the planners to select Desert One which the CIA recommended. Ignoring the fact that Desert One was next to a highway.

Even if things had not literally blown up at Desert One, the CH-53Es would have ferried Delta to Desert Two which was closer to Tehran. Then they were supposed to steal taxis and buses to raid the US embassy compound, then while in a fire fight search the compound for the hostages. Use the busses and taxies to exfiltrate to a stadium where the CH-53Es would whisk them away.

Great plan. We were lucky only eight died.

According to the website for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), the FPCON Level was raised for all of its bases on June 14, likely out of a precaution due to the active conflict between Israel and Iran.

You go to war with the army you have, not the army you wish to have.

In 1979, the army we had was just beginning to move forward in a positive direction after the Vietnam 'experience.' The 1975 Mayaguez 'Incident' Charlie Foxtrot may have been worse. Eagle Claw taught a lot of hard, costly lessons, to DoD, not just the US Army. RIP Eagle Claw KIA and those who have since passed.

The energy released by nuclear fission is orders of magnitude greater than the energy expended in mining and refining the nuke fuel.

Tungsten has to be mined and refined, too.

544 Eagle Claw taught a lot of hard, costly lessons, to DoD

Rule 1 - do not make it a multi service affair unless forced to.
Rule 2 - KISS
Rule 3 - be bold.

You had USAF Spec Ops, you had Delta, Navy CH-53Es, Marine pilots for the CH-53Es, late addition of some Rangers, and CIA and Iranian agents.

Except for the Marines and Delta, no one trained together. And Delta did not trust the Marines.
