Dentist Who Caddied There as a Kid Just Qualified to Play in the US Open on the Same Course

doof-Dentist-US-Open.jpg

As the emotions were about to erupt from his eyes, Matt Vogt tried not to cry.

Matt Vogt (pronounced ‘vote’ ) grew up outside of Pittsburgh and spent his teenage years working as a caddy at the famous Oakmont Country Club. That course is hosting professional golf’s 125th U.S. Open next week. And thanks to a sequence of events that seems stolen from Hollywood, Vogt will be playing in it.

Ranked way down at 1,173 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Matt works as a dentist in Indianapolis—but he shot 8-under par to win the U.S. Open’s Final Qualifying tournament in Washington state last weekend, earning himself a trip back to his hometown to star in golf’s national championship.

***

Vogt, who played college golf at Butler University in Indiana, advanced through local qualifying earlier in the spring, then won this year’s Indianapolis Open.

Read the whole thing. Cool story.

Caddyshack quotes welcomed and encouraged in the comments!

Happy Anniversary, Secretariat
(H/T to Cheri in comments from this morning's Art Thread)

June 9, 1973 – Secretariat wins the Triple Crown at Belmont Stakes.

doof-secretariat-1973.jpg

Wikipedia article

Secretariat (March 30, 1970 – October 4, 1989), also known as Big Red, was a champion American thoroughbred racehorse who was the ninth winner of the American Triple Crown, setting and still holding the fastest time record in all three of its constituent races. He became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and his record-breaking victory in the Belmont Stakes, which he won by 31 lengths, is often considered the greatest race ever run by a thoroughbred racehorse. During his racing career, he won five Eclipse Awards, including Horse of the Year honors at ages two and three. Widely regarded as one of the greatest racehorses of all time, he was nominated to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974. In the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century, Secretariat was second to Man o' War.

The legend of Secretariat was on full display at this year's Kentucky Derby

Florida Man Woman
(H/T to Anonosaurus Wrecks in comments from last night's Gun Thread)

Gainesville woman charged with rape after allegedly buying drinks for victim and manipulating him into returning to her apartment

Eryn Michelle Lane, 25, was arrested yesterday and charged with sexual assault after allegedly buying drinks for a man and manipulating him into returning to her apartment.

The victim told an Alachua County Sheriff’s Detective that he was friends with Lane at the time of the incident, and he was aware that Lane was interested in a romantic and sexual relationship with him, but he had made it clear that he was not attracted to her and had no intention of being romantic with her.

In early January, a group went out drinking, including Lane and the victim, and the victim said Lane picked him up in her car; at the bar, he said, Lane bought him shots and drinks, and at one point, he reminded her that he was not interested in her and she reassured him that nothing would happen between them.

The victim said that when the group left the bar, Lane refused to let their designated driver drive her car unless the victim agreed to come to her apartment; the victim said she threatened to drive drunk and crash the car if he did not agree, and he gave in after an argument that lasted about 30 minutes. He said he continued to drink at her apartment and then woke up next to Lane in her bed. He said Lane asked him if he wanted to go “round two,” and he demanded that she take him home.

Several witnesses corroborated the victim’s account of the evening, and one friend and one ex-boyfriend reportedly said that Lane is a “pathological liar.”

Post Miranda, Lane reportedly confirmed that she had intercourse with the victim but said he initiated it; she said she told him he was too drunk, but he insisted, which reportedly contradicted her statements to other friends immediately after the incident. She initially denied buying drinks for the victim but later changed her answer when confronted with statements from other witnesses. She said she wanted the victim to come back to her apartment for his safety and that everyone involved was “conspiring against her and this is why her statement is different than everyone else’s.”

The remarkable thing about Big Red's victory in the Belmont is not the 31 length margin he won by. It's that he shattered the time for a mile and a half by more than two seconds. No horse has come within two seconds of that time since then.

Hand ride all the way. Turcotte never even showed him the whip.

Just as amazing to watch the Preakness. Secretariat is last going into the clubhouse turn and going to the outside just blows by everyone in a few seconds.

Individually the musicians of Rush are fantastic. But every song I've ever heard from them is a tuneless showpiece for their skills. The drummer goes crazy for a bit, then the guitar, etc. It never comes together into anything resembling a tune. They really needed someone to rein them in and lead them in a common direction.

Oh, they knew exactly what they were doing..

Going to disagree with this to an extent.

The people directing the activities knew what they were doing that I agree, but the people breaking the fences down generally did not.

As one current example, I know plenty of LIVs upset about ICE/deportations. Do they actually care about the "immigration rights" of the invaders? Oh hell no. They want cheap nannies/gardeners/whatever. But these people, unlike the ones leading the NGO/and office holders aren't doing this because they want to break America they just want cheap services.

And you can see this dynamic in any number of cultural changes over the years from abortion, to globohomo, to the war on poverty and on and on.

The leadership of the enemy come up with attractive ways to sell poison to people, who then eagerly swallow it thinking they are getting candy.

107 Clips from an insane substack DU is discussing (Newsom is mostly not liked):

If Newsom Wants the White House, He Needs to Show Up in the Streets...he should start by walking into the crowd downtown. Face the people. Let the cameras roll. Dare them to arrest you. At this moment, that’s not political theater—it’s leadership the people are craving...

Gavin Newsom doesn’t need another interview or press release. He needs a moment.

Imagine the governor of California—surrounded by National Guard troops and riot police—walking into a crowd of peaceful protesters holding an American flag. Not flanked by aides. Not behind a podium. There with the people. Present. Daring the system to turn its power on him the way it has on so many others...

This is Newsom’s state—and Trump is invading it. These are his people. And if he wants to lead a nation, this is the test. Walk into the crowd. Face the cameras. Dare them to arrest you.

That’s not political theater. That’s how presidents are born.

Steward Copland disagrees with you about Ringo: "Copeland says. “I’m sitting with him at a dinner, and we start talking bass drums”. Copeland is charming, although he gets a little assertive when we ask why Ringo has been underrated by the general public. “He isn’t.” And then Copeland starts again: “At long last, he’s being appreciated for the musician he is. Normally, singers and guitarists just want a backbeat: ‘Give us a simple backbeat, nothing flashy.’ Ringo did more than that, and it was refreshing to hear a drummer who did.”

I've heard it said, even by drummers, that Ringo Starr is a human metronome with the sticks. Ringo was the 'Beat' in the 'Beatles'.

Even though he sounds simple or even basic at first, the more you listen to Ringo, the more amazed you become. What a solid drummer. And as you show, very underrated. Like everything else, flash gets the press but slow and steady wins the race. For all kinds of reasons, Rush will never be listed in the same category of influence as The Beatles. Ringo is one of four reasons why.

The young Vogt bonded with his oral surgeon and determined to help others in the same way. "Nobody should go through life without being able to bite an apple," Vogt has said.

Probably the reason they don't tell that part of the story is because it isn't true. I would accept this as an excuse, except they run not-true stories all the time, and sometimes the stories aren't even very good.

This story about Vogt taking up dentistry because of a freak golf accident and the intervention of a kindly oral surgeon is a good story, and they should report it.

If you're gooing to go with solo careers post-Beatles, you have to give it to Paul. Even a hit with a 'James Bond' film opening theme song. That's pretty diverse. His band, Wings, was a huge commercial success. You have to hand it to Paul for that, and I think he was instrumental (pun intended) in The Beatles' commercial success as well. George had his solo songs, and I had one of his albums (the only solo post-Beatles album I bought) but of the 4, Paul's been # 1 post-Beatles. Him being still alive helps, too.

But Ringo still gets the accolades.

I'm appreciating Ringo's abilities more and more as time goes on. I've been listening to Abbey Road again lately, and Ringo's drumming perfectly complements the other musicians around him. He's solid and steady, but you hear his contributions if you listen closely. I'd switch Bonham for Starr myself, but Ringo just might be more influential than all the others.

224 Newsom attempts to do the "engage with the crowd" photo op, when an errant spark from a burning dumpster lands on his head.
His hair gel instantly ignites, and the world looks on horrified as he runs screaming in the street, trailing flaming gobs of petroleum products.
He is finally tackled by an elderly veteran, who throws him down to the pavement, holds him down with one foot, and calmly unbuttons his fly and proceeds to urinate on the Governor's head with a mighty flow, extinguishing the blaze.
As the shaken Newsom is bundled into an ambulance, the old vet is asked how he had managed to produce such a copious amount of piss.
He shrugs and says, "They got a new Jane Fonda urinal sticker for the restroom in the VFW. I've been saving it up all day, just for her. Now hand me my cane and get out of my way, cause now I need a beer."

235 The solo careers for the ex-Beatles was a mixed bag. They could never duplicate the singular magic. How could they it seems.

McCartney worked and toured regularly and had some hits. Looking back at his book it is all well crafted but meh to my ear. He really came into his own with the 2000ish band he is still touring with. Mind blowing live act.

Lennon was a train wreck in the early 70s - Ono threw him out and he spent years drunk with Nielsen and it shows. After that he mostly retired until Double Fantasy. We can only imagine what would have come next. Imagine is arguably his best album.

Harrison recorded a lot with mixed results until the Wilbury's. What a killer band, Harrison hit his peak there. After that pretty much quit playing and spent his time fussing around the garden.

Ringo, went right to making pop albums and touring. He became quite the front man and his Allstar bands were/are killer shows. He is so unassuming and so great.

The young Vogt bonded with his oral surgeon and determined to help others in the same way. "Nobody should go through life without being able to bite an apple," Vogt has said.

Probably the reason they don't tell that part of the story is because it isn't true…

The REAL story is that once, during a routine bi-annual tooth cleaning during his childhood, his dentist talked his mother into agreeing to an additional set of 360 degree xrays, purchasing a night guard, getting a mouth cancer screening test, a series of teeth whitening sessions, and an extended set of Invisalign (TM) braces, for a total cost of well over $4,000 of expenses—uncovered by insurance—over and above the cost of the tooth cleaning. After seeing the impressive revenue-generating potential of a life of dentistry, he dedicated himself to becoming a DDS.

Unimpressive crowds standing chanting dumb slogans, solos standing close to police line and variously just taking pics, going on what appear to be truly mentally disturbed rants, or lecturing them on whatever. One cop, checked his watch during the worst nutcase rant, hilarious. They've pushed them back in ratchet-fashion once or twice, now slowly shaping the crowd before dispersing it, presumably.

Sheriffs in a standoff at a different spot, even smaller event. Nothing happening, even stupid deranged rants. (apparently Ventura County sheriff's deputies, interesting)

Do you play piano?

Posted by: Moonlight Bunny Ranch at June 09, 2025 11:58 PM (0eaVi)

423 If you want to try sleeping on a train I suggest booking a roomette over either bedroom option (this is on Amtrak of course). The difference is that a roomette has its (single) bunks aligned with the tracks, while the handicapped or regular bedroom has its beds aligned athwart the tracks. So in the roomette you are rocked side to side, which is actually soothing, whereas in the usual bedroom you are tipped head up, then feet up, which is quite unsettling. The family bedroom is a mixed bag of orientations for the beds, so someone is going to sleep the “wrong” way. Also the family bedroom is the most expensive, of course.

FWIW - my 'job ' history - spanning 44 years:

Job 1 - Hired out of college (engineer)

Job 2 - Answered ad in local paper. Laid off after a year, three months before getting married, company subsequently went bust.

Job 3 - Cold called people in local engineering society directory. It actually worked! Helped two others from Job 2 company find jobs there too.

Job 4 - 'Recruiter' called me. Found out years later he was referred to my by one of the Job 2 folks I'd helped

Job 5 - Fell into after friend from Job 4 left and went there as a temp guy and recommended me to them.

Job 6 - Expressed interest in joining company to a friend from there that I was working with. He had his boss open a requisition tailored to me.

Job 7 - Contacted by recruiter. Stayed almost 20 years.

Saw Patti Lupone quite a few times before she went nuts. Saw her in 'Anything Goes' and 'Evita'. Also in 'Witness', with Harrison Ford (non-singing role). Saw her many, many times sing the National Anthem(s) at Rangers games in the early to mid '80s (while she was on Broadway; usually Sunday night games).

When I saw that 'mask' theatrical drama, I just shook my head. Another liberal loonie.

M&C is still an excellent movie, by the way. I rewatched it not long ago and it's held up very well.

They took some Hollywood liberties with the characters (for one thing, Paul Bettany was far too pretty to play Doctor Maturin) but at least the characters were recognizably the same, and the filmmaking itself was top-notch.

So.

The protests in SF are turning out to be essentially a premature elevator fart in an express car to the upper floors, only no on else got on. LA seems only marginally better, only 1 area on 101 was occupied. Apparently, a strong show of force by an authority not of CA is quite effective. Heh.

I heard one news talking head opine that the Mexican flag has become the symbol of the protests. Apparently not a good choice. Deportation is likely even more popular now.

Hang these results on Newsom, Bonta, Pelosi, Harris Bass and every other national Democrat politician.

This leaves the upcoming US Army Parade in DC. Will the fact that it's also Trumps birthday b enough to bring out some of the old old and gray cadre members? It's been many years since I've seen a rifle in your hands...

I told them I won't even complain if you shitcan me in the first 90 days because you won't. 120 days later they're like. Here do all this shit nobody here knows how to do.
By trade I'm a heavy equipment mechanic. I'm too old and beaten up now to do it so I found administrative work which I turned out to be pretty good at. Then I got stupid and quit. Found this place from a temp agency after 9 months of no callbacks. Took a pretty big hit in pay but enough to get by on.
I deal with a lot of the higher ups and got my name out there hoping to show competence at everything I undertake. It worked. A couple of the guys went to bat for me and today I got a $4.50 raise and I'm going to work on pic and place machines.
I get to mechanic on shit that doesn't weigh a ton.

Similar story with how I got my current gig. Managed AV integrations and if a crew member got sick, I had to fill the hole wiring an equipment rack or pulling cable. Local school district had openings for a school classroom tech.

I pulled the A+ computer study guide from the local library and crammed for a week before taking the entrance test. Passing grade was 80%. That got me to the second round of interviews, which got me to the final stage with the department director. He didn't think I had enough practical experience and turned me down. Fortunately, another position opened up a week later and since I was the last one left that had passed the entrance test, he hired me at that point. He did not regret it..

I used the tractor to move a bunch of junk car bodies and frames, so I could mow the tall grass, and eventually move the old motor coach that is full of parts back by its own length. Got in there with the mower, deck set up high, and got it partly mowed, and it threw the drive chain for the right wheel. Put it back on. Threw it again. Put it back on. Threw it again. Gave up. Put it back on, motored gingerly back to the barn. I am hearing a repetitive clunk every time the wheels go round. Sprockets are worn bad. I think this mower needs a drive train overhaui. Will park it, and move battery to to #1 Dixon mower.

Cut the front yoke out of a Lark driveshaft, cut the tube way short, hammered the plug part of the yoke into the cut-off tube, and zapped it there with the stick welder. Looks like it belongs there. Tried to keep everything straight, using Mark I eyeball. Will see if it vibrates or not. It's a slow-moving vehicle, so I doubt a little imbalance in such a short shaft will be noticeable.

Tommorow, Zip van comes down off the blocks, gets water in the rad, fluid in the transmission, and gas in the tank, and I see if it will move itself.

Have you tried maybe looking at you profession as maybe a way to land something totally unrelated. As in "I have a degree. (I'd be working at the state if I had one) I can do this other job"?
For example. Receiving or purchasing. And work up.

I'm not surprised. Californians, no joke, are too laid back for this hard-core Seattle/Portland grunge.

I just got off work a beer ago. Haven't really looked at the news.
This riot season isn't quite like 2020. No really good riot porn.
I did like the dumb asses trying to light the truck on fire blowing themselves up with the gasoline. There needs to be more of that. Stupidity should be painful. Fatal.

Maybe one of the "leaders" has an IQ above room temperature and has realized that the paychecks for the National Guard and the Marine Corps don't get signed by the communist Mayor of Los Angeles, or the communist Mayor of Seattle, or the communist Mayor of Portland, or the communist Mayor of Minneapolis, or... and that therefore, they can't count on any coddling if the shit hits the fan.

569 Stateless, cats are great listeners. Like my coffee cup says:

"Cats know exactly how we feel. They don't give a damn, but they know."

And their soft fur can absorb a lot of tears-- this I know from experience!

570 They have set a random car on fire. Some poor sod will wake up with no car IN LA!!
Now the copter did follow the arsonists and probably has good video so they may get identified and arrested.

Posted by: Ciampino - It's burning at June 10, 2025 02:25 AM (sPQoU)

571 My last cat would follow me around the yard like a dog. The scrub jays knew he was only interested in moles and gophers and left him to his business. He was super chill. There was never a feeding time; I'd just leave a huge bowl of kibble in the utility room and he'd snack on it all week - and never got fat.

Posted by: 13times at June 10, 2025 02:26 AM (h2xys)

572 Waited until it dropped down to 92 degrees. Fired up the riding mower and knocked down the grass in the front yard. All was well until I got a little too close to the chainlink fence and got the grass catcher tube hung up.
Bottom half of the tube assembly popped loose and swung into the spinning blades. It was noisy for a little while.
After I got disentangled from the fence and shut down the mower, I found the bottom tube was very well chewed.
Went to Amazon, ordered what I hope is a replacement.
The Mower of Theseus shall ride again!
