He Traveled 10,000 Miles To Thank The Man Who Saved His Life

In a powerful moment years in the making, two strangers who now share an unbreakable bond finally met face to face in the town of Preston, England—half a world away from where their story began.
Luke Melling, 31, from Melbourne, Australia, had battled Hodgkin lymphoma since he was 16. After several relapses and years of grueling treatment, he was told that his only hope for survival was a stem cell transplant. With no match found in his family or even across Australia, the search went global.
After six long months of uncertainty, the answer came from 10,000 miles away: Alastair Hawken, a father-of-three from Lincolnshire, UK, was a perfect match.

“If I achieve nothing more than just seeing that smile on your face, then I’ve achieved everything I need to achieve.”
Now fully recovered, Luke has even run a marathon and is urging others to consider joining the stem cell donor registry.
Alastair hopes their story inspires more people to register.

Tor Alva – The World’s Tallest 3D-Printed Building

Towering above the rooftops of Mulegns, a picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, the recently unveiled Tor Alva (White Tower) is the world’s tallest 3D-printed building.
Mulegns, a tiny village of only 12 permanent residents nestled at the foot of the Swiss Alps, hardly seems like the perfect place to install the world’s tallest 3D-printed building, but local authorities decided that the unique installation could help revitalize the slowly fading community. Tor Alva stands 30 meters high and has a modular design featuring a total of 32 individually printed columns connected by giant screws and steel cables rather than glued with cement. No steel frame was used when printing the tower’s pieces, but its creators claim that the technological innovations showcased by the tower make it both extremely safe and easy to dismantle and move, if necessary.

Tor Alva was unveiled on May 20, 2025, in front of a crowd of about 300 excited people who were then able to climb the 3D-printed stairs of the tower all the way to the top floor, which acts as a domed theather for various artistic performances, but also as a platform for taking in the breathtaking alpine scenery.

Any of you sufficiently North morons get ready, there's likely a nice aurora tonight, starting about in an hour. We're likely gonna hit G4 again.

Not as spectacular as last May, nothing this far south, and it's so hazy now, it wouldn't matter.

That's due to Canadian wildfire smoke, and also some Saharan dust drifting here. "Seeing" as the astronomers say is piss poor.

good for you for traveling. I'm glad I did a lot of my traveling when I was younger and able to handle a lot of walking. When I was out west, we ran into some Swiss people who were renting an RV and were going to spend a month wandering the western states. That's the way to see 'Merica.

My cousin and his wife died in the Lac Du Bonnet,Mb wildfire. It exploded so fast, the fire rescue knew but were unable to save them.
This year when smoke is in the air I know how fortunate we are that we aren't living in the path of the flames.

We're into the part of the year when it doesn't really get dark here in the 907. I'm not far enough North that the sun stays up, but it just barely drops below the horizon.

1. Ukraine commandos blew up two railroad bridges inside Russia, about 50 miles inside the border, with accompanying wreckage of trains. This may affect Russian logistics for the battles now happening in the northeast for perhaps a week.

Back at "Dingy Harry" Reid Airport after 2 lovely days up at Zion. We rented e-bikes and rode through the park. Hiked a few trails and got lots of great photos.

I saw the request for a Doofalogue -- lemme cull through the photos from 5 days in Vegas along with the Zion photos. Maybe a few worth sharing!

One highlight of the trip -- Kenny Chesney at the Sphere. That place is amazing! And he always puts on a great show!

Jennifer Regan was the first to report a “sky show” over Lawson, Missouri in May 2025. She believes she saw a wormhole open in the sky and then she witnessed a large vertical beam of light with multiple objects ejecting from it. That was in the daytime on May 1, 2025.

Then on May 3, 2025 another woman in Lawson was walking her dog at 4:40 a.m. and saw multiple objects coming down a strange, large, bright beam of light. She counted a total of 38 different objects. Like the first witness, she believes the light beam came out of a wormhole in the sky.

MUFON investigators confirmed that no objects were seen on radar and no satellites were in the area at the times of the sightings.

Curious to know what that age might be. Colon cancer took my father a few months after he turned 87. He had been getting regular screenings but let eight years elapse since his last one due to distractions. My mother blamed herself through her final years for not keeping on top of that..

First off, my comment was about people who have regular colonoscopies. Most people do not. All mine are in the hospital as I have an ICD. My first time was, in my late 50s, when I was in the hospital with something else. Mentioned I needed one. Saw a Doc. Few days later, it's done. But I have to go to the hospital every time. Unfortunately, as a cardiac patient, I'm a big deal.

So I'm not a fair criteria to judge the age by, considering my other major health issue. I was told somewhere in the early to mid 70's for people with no real polyp/issues before. If you have a polyp history, it can get extended. But the problem with the polyp history extension is if you have a certain number of polyps, 5-10, you have to have coloscopies every 3 years, instead of the normal 5. If you have more than 10 polyps, you need colonoscopies every year.

Again the problem/issue my current doc tells me is the anaesthesia. Some people don't react well, and less so with age. At a certain point, do you want to keep rolling those anaesthesia dice?

360 The supervision really wants us to stay until 5am on Sundaynight, but it's bad enough I get home now at 4am and have to leave again at 3:30pm. Staying to 5am could mean only a 9 1/2 hour .

Yes. Some of the parts that are stretched taut when you're vertical can rest when you're horizontal.
