First World Problems...

SpongeCrisis25.jpg

I don't mind that sponges wear out. I guess it's the circle of life and all that.

But stop cutting them up with knives! Why is it that my training sessions and continuing education and interactive videos have no lasting effect?

Maybe sponge use should be in the curriculum of our nation's public schools!

34 Greetings Everyone

In last week's FWP thread I posted the following problem as post #136:

"My FWP is a ceiling mounted bedroom fan which operates only off a remote. No switch. Now it stopped responding to the remote.....etc"

There were a number of responses including killing power to the fan to see if it resets.

I wanted to report success. After a period of trial and error (see below), I located the breaker which controls the fan. After switching power off and back on the fan now once again responds to the remote.

Thank you to everyone for the insightful and helpful responses!

Now a new question presents. The breaker box is new in the last 5 years and is 200 amp service (I think). Breakers 1 - 20 are 15 amp breakers. BUT...it seems to shut anything off I have to kill BOTH breaker #1 AND the breaker I want to kill.

How can this be? How can the whole house seemingly run thru breaker 1 (15 amps) AND another breaker?

Any electricians can explain this?

There is also a notice on the box saying breaker #1 is reserved for solar power - how can that be if it's only 15 amps or so marked?

Thank you again.

The four large ones are at the bottom and are marked '200'.

There might also be a large 'main' at the bottom.

The top one, #1, is marked '15' and is sized and shaped just like the other 20 or so 15 amp breakers. But to shut anything off, I have to shut #1 off and the breaker controlling the area I want to shut off. Shutting off number 1 doesn't shut off the house, but it has to be off for anything else to shut off.

We looked closely at Wyoming for tax reasons (converting large IRAs to Roths) but we are firmly attached to southern California for family reasons.

But that could change - both sons are mostly out of California, last of the parents passing away, etc.

But I'll never sell the California house. A mile from the beach in 'Surf City' ? Are you kidding me? LOL!

Water table is too high to go underground. Besides you have to go up to Haight-Asbury to 'go underground' old-school style. If you're over 29 you'll know what that means....

87 The top one, #1, is marked '15' and is sized and shaped just like the other 20 or so 15 amp breakers. But to shut anything off, I have to shut #1 off and the breaker controlling the area I want to shut off. Shutting off number 1 doesn't shut off the house, but it has to be off for anything else to shut off.
Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at June 01, 2025 02:47 PM (QGaXH)

You say that breaker is marked "solar". But does the house have solar panels? And an inverter?

The way those breaker boxes are built, each breaker is connected to one of two bus bars that form rails in the panel; one on each side of neutral. IIRC, panels are built such that adjacent slots connect to opposing sides of the line, so that a double breaker can switch both sides for load like a range or dryer that uses 240 volt power.

Are you sure the #1 breaker is not a double one, with the toggles joined by a link?

89 On square riggers, we have a sponge system. New, cleaner sponges have all 4 corners. As they get a bit grubby, you cut off one corner to signal it's for countertops only. Two corners off, cabinets and such.

Four corners cut off, use only on the floor.

That way, the crew can keep track without having to ask.

Not just Roads on Islands, but Dullware and Connect-a-butt as well.

They should all be combined with Massoftwoshits.

There's an idea. If they want to add states then combine some of the blue states into one so the overall number remains '50'.

You know, I should have made that connection myself. Riley Gaines once spoke at my church, and while I think she is a long-overdue voice calling BS on men competing in women's sports, it would be interesting to see whose heads explode if she were to call for similar respect for men's sports (and by extension, men's spaces)..

We can start with splitting Western Colorado off from the Communist Republic of Denver, and then maybe northern Cali combining with southern Oregon. There's two states right there.

Identifying which circuit controls what
========
Greetings, Weak Geek ... You might want to consider a Klein Tools Digital Circuit Breaker Finder, which makes identification an easy task for homeowners ... Even easier if you and another person team up with cellphones ... One person inserts a "plug" into a single outlet while the other person moves a "wand" in front of the column of breakers ... The wand will flash when it reaches the breaker linked to the plug ... When we did this at our house: (a) the person at the breaker box communicated (by cellphone) the corresponding breaker numbers to the person inserting the plugs; then (b) the plug person wrote the breaker numbers on small pieces of painter's tape and stuck these on the outlet plates; and finally (c) it was fairly easy to go room-by-room to compile a list identifying which outlets were controlled by which breakers ... There are various models based on your needs, with the basic kit well under $100.

I dimly recall, at the time, they sold it as 'fairness' in employment, business. Apparently a lot of 'important' deals and decisions were being made that the 'ladies' were missing out on....

172 41 Greetings Everyone
Now a new question presents. The breaker box is new in the last 5 years and is 200 amp service (I think). Breakers 1 - 20 are 15 amp breakers. BUT...it seems to shut anything off I have to kill BOTH breaker #1 AND the breaker I want to kill.

Maybe a stupid question but, why don't you simply leave breaker #1 OFF all the time?

There are no stupid questions.

It was originally in the 'on' position so I left it on. The problem is - breaker 1 being 'on' should in no way prevent any other breaker from shutting off power to it's own circuit. Plus - if - indeed - breaker 1 controls the house - how can it not overload all the time? It's only 15 amps. A hairdryer plus tv should be enough to pop it yet we have no such problems.

You know how you can spot their awareness of the BS? Imagine a girl athlete breaking records in the same manner these men are. There would be articles and profiles, featuring interviews of every trainer and and coach that nurtured and witnessed their progress. When Venus and Serena Williams turned pro, their father became a mini-celebrity due to their dominance in tennis.

Where are the coaches and family members behind these phenoms that have come out of nowhere to explain how they helped, or at least witnessed, their dedication to excelling in their sport? Why aren't sports journalists (spit) suddenly incurious about a particular track star's rise to dominance?

Want to put an end to this crap? Give these men the Caitlyn Clark treatment. Confront them with cameras and microphones. Plaster their names and faces across every sports page and website. Give them every serious consideration and press them about every detail of their personal journey...

Did mine, a bit bigger than yours with trex a year ago. Full teardown and rebuilb. $27k
