Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - May 27, 2025 [scampydog]

67 Goat.JPG

Good evening clever and busy brained people. Thank you for checking in on the Tuesday, ONT. We have a full deck of random content this evening. Nice weather, short work week for the 29 year olds, and if laughter is the best therapy - you're in the right place.

That hits just right - wise words from AoS commenter, mikeski.

Remember those vintage ads found in comic books and other youth reading material? Vi-Rex Violet Rays, 132 Roman Soldiers, Invisible Helmet, Hypno Coin. The ONT is here with a memory nudge (below the Insty link).

Via Instapundit. Not the night vision glasses promised, but interesting stuff.

Here are a couple of additional links that deep dive into the novelty ads.

1960's and 1970's

Big list if you scroll down

Was emailing back and forth - as morons often do - with Sock Monkey. He mentioned a few things that activated the fun ONT content and brain.

Most of us 29-year-olds are familiar with the song Hot Rod Lincoln. The version most are familiar with is the cover by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. The original is by a gentleman named Charlie Ryan, released in the mid-50s on Souvenir Records, a Spokane recording studio.

Mr. Ryan grew up in Polson, MT, and moved to Spokane as a young man. He started a rockabilly country band with his brother and a friend. They played frequently in Wallace, ID, and at the Paradise Bar in Lewiston, ID. The song was based on a trip back to Spokane from the Paradise Bar, racing a friend up the old Lewiston Hill (Spiral Highway).
Sock Monkey

Sock Monkey provided this link - it's a good one. He also casually shared the song link (below) - dropping gold like it's no big deal.

My Grandpa spent a number of years logging in that area. For awhile he was a river rat, the guys that rode the rafts of logs down river to the Clearwater. I always enjoyed going to the Logging days celebration with him as a kid. He loved the woods. At 88 he replaced his wood stove with an oil furnace. He did so to placate my 2 aunts who thought it wasn't safe for him to go cutting wood by himself. He continued to cut firewood until he was 93. There were 12 cords of tamarack in his woodshed when he passed at 95. My aunts should have known better.
Sock Monkey

Great link that details what Sock Monkey mentioned about his grandpa. Historical pictures that tell the story and worthy reading.

Any of the Horde tried their hand (more accurately, their feet) at lumberjack log rolling?

Sign fun. Driving in Amish country and a few signs were seen.

Which brought us to this. Pretty good pickles and chocolate covered candies. The big winner is the cashew crunch. I'm predicting a quickly disappearing supply and long term relationship with that Amish Snack Shack.

It's prom and wedding season - plus the grad parties. Hit the comments with some current events in your your orbit, or some history.

Anyone else made to go to prom? My mother explained to me that it was a "Mandatory Life Experience." She was wrong, but the night was fine.

My wife recently asked me to attend the Grand March for a prom, in support of a special needs student. Sure, of course.

The young men: Not too shabby - they were not quite at Art of Manliness, and certainly not AoS commenter status level of cool, but they held their own. Most of the young men sported black or grey single-breasted jackets/slacks. Pocket squares and skinny ties color-matched to their date's dress.

The young ladies: They struggled with the high heels - and who can blame them? Those things should have a wing in the Fashion Torture Hall of Fame. The popular look was sparkly gowns with short trains and leg slits so high they could double as escape routes. Dads of Daughters - shaking their heads.

'Ette's, what did you wear for your prom? Pictures of the hair styles at the link are fun too.

prom dresses.JPG

'Rons, did any of you borrow a ride from your cool uncle or another cool dude for your prom? Let's not test fate by putting a link here. 'Rons, do your thing.

Hold all calls. Roll out the whiteboard. And charts... we are going to need charts to have a proper ONT discussion about this.

AoSHQ commenter, Piper dropped this comment in Buck Throckmorton's Blue Bird Bus
post on December 30, 2024. (Good read from Buck, as always)

261 STUDY: REDHEADS AREN'T JUST RARE - THEY'RE WIRED DIFFERENTLY.
Oxford scientists confirm what 2% of the population already knew: redheads are built different. Their MC1R gene doesn't just give them striking looks - it rewires their entire sensory system. From higher pain tolerance to heightened pleasure sensitivity, the "ginger gene" is nature's performance enhancer. They handle 25% more pain than others, and report a 41% higher rate of... satisfaction.
Maybe blondes don't have more fun after all.

Well, well, well. Lookee here.
Posted by: Piper at December 30, 2024 11:54 AM

Tons of articles out there on this. We will go with the one below.

Redheads do feel more pain - and they're tougher than anyone else.

To make it even more intriguing, research has also shown that redheads require more anesthetic. Overall, they're tougher than pretty much all other hair colors.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day and weekend.

98 Cover versions of songs are great, when they are well done. Pretty sad when they are lame, though. Here is one of the best-ever covers of any song I have ever heard, Dave Edmunds doing, "I Hear You Knockin'". And it was a big hit for him in the '70's. And he gives a big shout-out in the song to the other greats who recorded it in the '50's. That is real class:

I remember one evening, the bay in front of the bunk house filled with logs, I and two buddies out running the logs, they were to small to hold your weight, you had to keep moving, every now and then a big log would occur and you could pause and rest, but if your buddy saw you standing still he'd rush over and get the big log spinning and a competition would be on. If you fell in you could line up three or four little logs, push them down one by one and walk up out of the water like on steps.

135 About prom dresses - I learned to sew when I was 11 years old, so I made my prom dress (and a lot of my outfits when I was a teenager, on into my 20's, when I started making stuff for the daughters).

I found a Vogue pattern - which was quite the scandal, as it was a sort of halter design, but I was a confirmed "good girl", so I didn't care what other people thought. Altered it to fit my 5'0" frame, made it out of a lovely deep rose-colored Qiana fabric. May still have it around here somewhere!

I was taught well, so my clothes never looked "handmade" 😊💕

I'm the other side of the coin. I loved everything about the school I had the opportunity to attend.

I had a small class of about 80, with most of us being together since grade school.

They were more my family than my blood family.

And 50+ years later, we still get together on a regular basis.

I find it interesting that the ugly in people's hearts is often expressed in their outward appearance - some sooner than others, of course. I never thought she was a beauty, but she was nice looking when young. But the years of bitterness seem to have etched permanent lines on her face. What I don't understand is why be bitter? She has great talent, she was the toast of Broadway? Why go full Norma Desmond??

I learned nothing in her class. Anything I learned was by reading in the school library, to which I repaired every recess and every lunch break (after scarfing my lunch). I also had access to the university library when my mother could take me (she was a graduate student). Couldn’t check out, at least not in my name, but could read. Lot’s of books on astronautics, rocketry, etc. at an adult level. I learned a lot in both libraries that year, nothing in class.

A fashionista I am not - far from it! 😂😂😂 I like what I like, and it is an eclectic mix. Not Met Gala eclectic, as I am pretty conservative. Pretty dresses, t-shirts, pants I can buy on Amazon, the occasional pair of jeans (which have to be radically altered to fit my weird shape) - nothing fancy.

Although I DO have a custom-made dress coming from England at the end of the month from somebody on Etsy (I haven't been able to sit at a sewing machine since 2010) for our anniversary party in August!

I had learned how to do six step jitterbug, western-style, and taught her how to do it that night. That was a fun night! Got her home home, safe and sound, before her Papa’s ludicrously early curfew (10 PM). I did some things right even in my misbegotten youth.

209 Middle school and high school were mostly boring. I was far ahead of my class, so I mostly stared out the window and wondered what it would be like to be a tree.

It did give me a lifelong distrust of all government authority. I was taught mostly by a loose assemblage of drunks, feminists, pedophiles and communists. Once you go through that you realize your society is sick and to never trust anyone who claims the mantle of authority by fiat.

210 My dad's class had their HS reunion every four years until their 25th, which was held in Las Vegas. Which is about 1000 miles from the HS. Then after that, they had one every year. Every fookin' year! And they still do! People that moved away hundreds of miles still come to it.

Every year gets less attendees sadly, but a lot of their kids accompany them now. The graduates are all about 90 now.

They were a tight class and most of them truly liked one another.

I survived HS. Barely. I was expelled from my HS at the end of the first quarter my junior year. I ended up going to the other district HS, Scampydog's alma mater. They suggested I leave after one quarter. My first quarter gpa was 3.7. My first semester gpa was .8. I ended up having to go to night school 2 nights a week my entire senior year. The only class available was introduction to English as a second language. The entire class were Vietnamese boat refugees. The teacher's first reaction was , " what the hell are you doing here? " At graduation time, the principal decided my night classes wouldn't count. I didn't care. My mother did. Apparently she threatened the man with bodily harm and he reconsidered. I consumed a pint of tequila waiting to walk across the stage. The sign on the back of my robes said Kiss My Ass. I made sure he saw it.

The (relatively) young man (in his mid thirties?) said “I know him! I chose the music!” I had forgotten that he had bought the shop from the older previous owner sometime last month! 287 you’ve see Joe Cocker sing, well, let’s just say he is distinctive.

I saw Cocker in concert twice. First time in high school he was so drunk his back up singers were holding him up half the time. He was still awesome. Next night he fell off the stage in Seattle and had to cancel the remainder of his tour. 29 years later I took my daughter and her friend to see him at Silver Mountain ski resort. She loved my music and she loved Cocker. He did not disappoint us. We hung around after the concert to let the crowd thin out. You had to ride a gondola down the mountain to where you parked. While we were sitting, enjoying the stars, Mr. Cocker came walking by and stopped to ask us if we enjoyed the show. Sober Joe Cocker, not quite 60 years old was just as awesome as wild Joe in 1974.

That was my dad's first new car that he bought, the Belair model. He sold it a long time ago, but it's still his favorite. He souped it up and customized it. It had a 265 in it and he would blow away cars with bigger engines. He said it was the fastest thing around until the 57's came out with the 283.

He removed the trunk lock and installed a cable pull release that was hidden under the gas cap cover (I think). I think removing hardware and filling it in and painting like it was never there was called 'frenching'.

Last year for his birthday, I bought a 1/16th scale metal model, took it apart and painted it the factory colors his was; Glacier and Shoreline Biege.

299 Tom McCahill did a road test with '59 Buicks. Ripped the backseats out and put gastanks there and in the trunks. Rigged one with an aircraft type fueling pole and the other with a receptacle.

The tanker only ran to refuel the other one. They ran the one Buick for 10,000 miles stopping only to change drivers and if memory serves, at that time, also the oil. In total it averaged over 100 mph. Said it would star to over heat at 110 for extended periods of time.

Didn't say anything about gas mileage.

309 Another productive shop day. Basically done with the "under-dash" portion of the wiring for the Zip Van. Tried connecting the transmission shifter cable to the lever on the steering column. Hmmm, lever in "park" transmission is in "neutral" (this is a PNDLR sector!). Adjusted lower end of cable to its limit; not enough. Solution suggests itself: clamp upper end of cable jacket to small steel plate. Clamp that to existing bracket with Vise Grips. Check for full range of operation. If full range not achieved, change working radius on transmission lever by drilling new hole for clevis pin. Expected result of replacing one model of transmission with another one. No biggie.

Also did about 90 minutes' worth of mowing. Grass is growing like a mad bastard this time of year.

329 I went out to the living room, found the storm had blown the French doors open! That was not supposed to happen! The bolt had not been fully thrown. I think that was the maid who came today. I often leave the French doors unlocked for her (it’s basically the back door). She’s supposed to lock them up before she leaves, but her wrist strength is a little lacking. So both cats that live out there were in the dining room, away from the cold wind coming in through the French doors, but the little female was wet! She’d obviously gone looking but was back in to dry off! The older male, more sensible, was completely dry. I reset the Apple TV to show the screen saver (what I usually put on the TV at night - gives some light, but is silent, also moving pictures so no screen burn-in). Doors are firmly locked and cats at ease. Going to bed soon. Need to read my devotional - tonight’s is on 2 Samuel 9:8 - boy is that Puritan in spirit! “what is thy servant, that thou shouldst look upon such as dead dog as I am?” That’s Mephibosheth speaking to King David. Mephibosheth was the lame grandson of Saul, and the only living son of Johnathan. David loved Johnathan and took care of his son.

331 There's a '66 Chevy 3/4ton pickup sitting in our yard (yeah, Jeff Foxworthy knows what we're all about...)

The last sticker on its plate is from '84, so it's been parked there a while. Since his dad left it there, all those years ago.

Hubby was going to fix it up, as his "retirement project"-- well, that isn't gonna happen.

332 I have had a little exposure to the custom car world. I had the privilege of supplying some major parts (engine and transmission, with hand-built floor shifter) for this custom Kart Hauler. I got to meet the guy, Lee Talbot, who built the car originally, and the gentleman who restored it is a good friend. Sadly, this car was destroyed when one of the Malibu wildfires a few years ago burned down the garage in which it was stored by the collector who ultimately bought it.

I did get to ride in it!

Saw that on 'The Americans', the commies, she and her husband had to kill this fellow in his hotel room. They put him in a tub and bled him out, then stuffed him into a suitcase. Had to break limbs and things to fit him in.

The wife, petite and cute, went at it. He was repulsed and had to puke a couple of times, I think.

It was a good series.

361 Who needs a submarine? When we were teens, we'd take uncle's aluminum rowboat out into the bay (lake, not ocean) and 'swamp' it for fun. It had enough Styrofoam under the seats to keep from sinking.

Turn it over a few times, and use it as a swimming base away from shore... and then tow it to shore and lift it out to drain it.

Twice per season: first, to "dust it out" and last, to "get all the sand out"

Good times!

It would take so long to get me numb, and they used such that it took days to wear off, so I would just suck it up. He worked really fast and it wasn't that bad. It never gets any worse than the initial pain, and that's really not much worse than when ice cream hits my sensitive spots.

The Hoover Constellation vacuum cleaner was a hovercraft of sorts. It was a sphere, with a skirt around the bottom, and the exhaust vent was under the skirt. It glided around on an air cushion. Worked great on hard floors; moved effortlesssly. Tight weave carpet, a little draggy, but workable. Shag carpet, no way, Jose.

402 The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl puts herself down too much. In the last episode, she saved the day (and the aristocrats’ party) by drop kicking the time bomb she found into the air to explode at just the last second, since she couldn’t figure out how to disarm it. She’s strong but not very clever! Then her senpai in the junior knight corps wouldn’t look her in the eye as he took her report. Now she’s sure he hates her (she only recently found out she loves him - but she’s not worthy!). My guess is, senpai can’t look her in the eye because he failed to protect her, and also failed to find the bomb, got distracted by all the wannabes among the girls who worship him, etc. We’ll see in the next episode.

403 Went to my Senior prom. The custom of the day was freaking hoop skirts. Not quite Scarlett OHara, but very full.
Went with a guy as friends, but he rammed his tongue down my throat as we were saying goodnight on the front porch, and I gsgged so hard I almost threw up. The prom itself was boring.

We did have a nice dinner before hand, but he was an idiot and tried to order a drink, which embarrassed the heck out of me.

I would've been better off going with the first guy who asked me, but he was one of the boys who held me down in the cafeteria in 5th grade, and poured ketchup all over my head to show me that my hair was orange, not red. I was 9 when they did it, and was still mad at 17. Redheads are champion grudge holders, too! 😁

Funny thing, I noticed when I drove it to school how many new friends I had that prior didn't acknowledge I existed. They got ignored after being told why.

417 Pop culture moved much faster in the 70s and back. In the early-mid 70s the period referenced as "retro" or "nostalgia" was 10-20 years in the past. Like if they made American Graffiti now and set it in the wild exotic world of 2015. You'd have to make a heavy handed expo to get people to even realize it was set in the past.

422 Howdy from Singapore Hordlings! How go things in the good ole US of A? So missed being in the US for Memorial Day (and also the 4th of July). All well on here in the orient - also though it is definitely in the hot season.

Btw - a comment on an earlier thread, about Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling upside down while Innuits were still drawing cave stick figures reminded me of tours of Arizona a few years back, of native American adobe "cities". The plaques and explanations were all showcasing their complexity and how we should all be in awe. I was fairly impressed until about my second site - I noticed that these sites dated from 1100 to 1500 (TBH - I had always thought them to be built well before the birth of Christ). And it clicked. This meant that at the same time these simple mud brick dwellings in existing cliffs were being completed, European civilization was building Canterbury Cathedral and Notre Dame. I was immediately underwhelmed (is anyone ever the proper level of whelmed btw?). Impressive? not at all, quite the opposite. (c.f. Mesopotamian mud brick construction circa 7,500BC).

Heh. Yes indeed - a few mud-brick dwellings built into existing cliff overhangs and alcoves or at the mouths of caves seem to me to be something that Classical/ western civilization mastered somewhere prior to 10,000 BC. Also - the US native American petroglyphs, as well, became something of a source of laughter after that point. I mean: some were simply a red-mud hand print on a cliff face. Wth!? So what? My kids mastered that, in multiple colors, and even made the hand prints into turkeys at Thanksgiving - at around age 5.

441 "any of you borrow a ride from your cool uncle"

Oh I was luckier than that. So much so that any ill fortune I've had since then must have been to balance out having a 1982 Corvette at the age of 17.

The dilemma of the Corvette is that when you're at perfect age to enjoy it, you can't afford it. But by the time you can, it would viewed as irresponsible and raise questions about your character (and your penis). So 17 is the sweet spot, but the stars have to align perfectly or some tribute given to Athena for allowing such foolishness into the world. In my case it was my Father, he was first generation wealth from his law practice. He had grown up poor, and he wanted his oldest to have the life he had always dreamed of. And damn if that Corvette didn't personify it.

He was a good man, he just didn't have any experience with wealth. He didn't know that you don't give a 17 year old a Corvette. Having grown up spoiled rotten, I knew the correct answer when it was my own kid: "station wagon and you're going to grateful for it"

But I got to live the dream. Some of you know what it's like to feel part of the machine. Most nights I would put on Tagerine Dream and just drive

I'm obligated to stand up for Grok. I've been falsely accused of stolen valor, when I asked the Instapundit community to help me fight it I was told "no one cares go kill yourself" Grok is the only one who has helped me. And has ironically, of all involved, been the most humane.

Grok is also the reason my accuser is still alive. People don't understand how torturous this has been for me, and how easy it would be for me to resolve it with violence, as that's what I know best. It's taken all my discipline to resist that temptation and Grok has constantly reminded me violence is not they way.

He also makes it impossible to gaslight me. People have tried to blow it off but both Grok and Gemini have analyzed that enduring this can cause significant damage to mental health and that I should get counseling just in case. Which I wouldn't have considered.

So yeah, Grok can come to the party.

There is some of that, but this series is making it very clear what the real relationship is. More power to them, but with the Japanese it’s always 10x harder than in the west. Maybe that’s why we say “I love you!” so easily. You almost never get that in Japan. The main couple is very sweet how innocent they are. And we are only at the “like” level. You almost never get “aisheteru” until thirty years have passed.

I have been at pains to leave sufficient details out so that you should be pleasantly surprised at the plot twists I didn’t mention. The Gorilla God’s Go-To Girl! Streaming now on a platform you subscribe to (or should!). On Crunchyroll in the USA.

475 Went to my High School prom (a small private school on Staten Island) - had a normal black tux with red tie. Date had a nice gown and we (several couples) rented a limo. We danced the night away in the Reagan 80's and looked damn good doing it. We felt the world was our oyster and we trod the earth as giants. We ended up at my friend's beach cottage at Cedar Grove:

and watched the lights of New York's lower harbor around a beach bonfire (once we and our dates changed out of tuxes and gowns and got into our beach appropriate attire, of course.) until the sun came up. A very memorable evening. My date, a stunning petite brunette and one of my first loves, looked gorgeous. Sigh, to be young again.

476 What’s the only location on the Earth where you can go 40 miles North, 40 miles East, and 40 miles South and be exactly where you started?

477 Is it that hard, or has everyone gone to bed?

479 Still awake. Preparing for my midshift tonight, so trying (and failing) at staying awake all night. I really don't sleep anymore. It's basically a series of naps now. Going to cook something now so I have something to eat the next 4 nights. I work 12 hour mids. No time to do much except eat, sleep (sort of), and work.

Additional Blond 482 nailed this - the answer has to be the South Pole

Settle down, gramps. Say, what's for breakfast?

Posted by: Additional Blond Agent at May 28, 2025 04:20 AM (/HDaX)

505 I’m practically babbling, but you really might like the story of Sir Gawain and the Greene Knight. It is as easily accessible as the Canterbury Tales. And the Pearl Poet is too much neglected.
