The Highs and the Lows Cafe

underwatercliff.jpg
from Scuba Diving Lover

Prolly some kind of weasel.

Raising a baby quail... and then the next generation.

This bird is unflappable.

It annoys me that anytime I see a neat video my first thought is "probably an AI cheapfake."

Proud mama.

This bird.

Golden retriever puppy growing up.

A cat-and-mouse game played by dog-and-squirrel.

Stella the leaf-pile-jumping dog is still giving those leaf-piles a splash at the ripe age of 11 years old. Reached for comment, Joe Biden said, "Mmmghno lurger Trumpalinizaure kids like my hairy legs nnnyenhigguruff."

Squirrel picnic.

If you're not herdin', you're not livin'.

Hippo chases three adult male lions out of his watering hole like he's shooing three tweens out of a 7-11.

Have we been the victims of anti-river-otter propaganda?

29 ‘No More Guns. Gone’: Why Gabby Giffords Isn’t Giving Up
https://t.co/EmnduEa3ys

...As we wrap our interview in her office, I ask how she keeps coming back to a challenge so deeply ingrained in politics. She pauses for 12 pregnant seconds.

“No more guns,” she says.

Ambler, her aide and adviser, tries to clarify that she means no more gun violence, but Giffords is clear about what she’s saying. “No, no, no,” she says. “Lord, no.” She pauses another 32 seconds. “Guns, guns, guns. No more guns. Gone.”
An aide clarifies that she’s talking about Australia, where gun sales were outlawed after a mass shooting and existing weapons were purchased by the government. Giffords nods in the affirmative. It’s an idealistic goal, for sure, and one perhaps mismatched for the moment in this country. But Giffords has an answer for that: “Legislation, legislation, legislation.”...

I dove it, you get in the water, depth is 3 ft, then 10, then 20, then 30, then it goes 2 miles down, at a very steep angle. The temperature of the water changes as does the color. 83 If your life’s pursuit becomes focused on trying to accomplish the demonstrably impossible, it’s time to reflect on your life.

Murder is as old as recorded time, and guns had nothing to do with it. You are never going to eliminate guns in our country, and that pursuit alone is insidious given a momentary reflection on those in history who tried to accomplish it. Somewhat ironic is that in your reflection, you will discover the reason we have a Second Amendment in the first place.

Our founders and framers saw tyranny as the antithesis of liberty. Modern liberals see it as a tool by which their wildest, most oppressive fiats can be achieved.

An aide clarifies that she’s talking about Australia, where gun sales were outlawed after a mass shooting and existing weapons were purchased by the government. Giffords nods in the affirmative. That apparently was the thing when first trying to breed cats...they could be difficult. A queen meeting a tom might just tell him to piss off, even when in heat. We managed to make wolves into tiny bitty dogs and huge dogs but a cat is pretty much a cat. Even the huge Savannas seem to be converging closer to normal cat sizes in just a few generations.

OMG. It's like watching a high school JV game. Two-hand push shots. Guards drive to the hoop at the speed of Joe Biden. Dunks? Get real.

Clark only had 4 points when she came off the bench with 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd. Don't know why she was off her game before I began watching. She scored 2 on a layup while I watched. She is a world-class flopper. Pretended Greiner elbowed her and drew an offensive foul. I didn't see Greiner do anything but set picks; she was called for another offensive foul on Clark for not being set on a pick. Legitimate call.

Anyhoo, it's much less exciting than watching a pro darts match.

Best wall dive ever, Sipadan, small coral pinnacle off of Borneo. Could walk around the island in 10 minutes. Middle of the Celebes (?) Sea. Totally protected. 1,500-ft walls all around. They didn't mess around with "don't touch shit". Local (Malaysian) guy grabbed the wall to steady himself at one point, was gone at lunch (back to Borneo).

Southern China has a year-round growing season and can turn in three crops per year. North China can sometimes eke out two.

Intense cultivation, a family ethic build on ancestor worship (the more kids you have, the better your afterlife will be) led to massive populations. China in the 1800s lost more people in the Taiping Rebellion than the Unites States' total population. They recovered that in about ten years.

Post 1949, they continued to grow, and Mao famously did not fear nuclear war because China could outbreed anyone. The One Child Policy has finally taken cultural root, and babies are now a hindrance. There's a gender imbalance and male culture is about gaming and threshing the rice.

A lot of people think that the KMT and Chiang Kai-shek sat out the war with Japan, waiting for the Americans to win it for them. That is Communist propaganda. It was Mao and his buddies who sat in caves - did bandit raids and let the KMT do all the lifting.

Some of the most eye-opening research I did for Walls of Men, my military history of China, was about the brutal, hard-fought battles in China and the fact that the KMT actually won a few rounds. The decisive factor was China's poor industrial capacity and isolation from the Western Allies.

167 I just saw the behemoth in charge of CEMA that neglected to sound the tornado warning in St. Louis. But, she got those they/them pronouns out there. Coddling and showing special treatment to these attention seeking idiots is starting to pile up the bodies.

Anyone remember Rocket Pants?
Maybe their wacky aunt would wear Rocket Pants in the 60's?

They were kinda the spandex prototype, no?

Women apparently know more about all aspects of home repair and improvement. If my wife was like one of those in the commercials and started telling me how to do things, I'd happily let her deal with it. She's the expert, after all.

177 The US State Department has determined that the Muslim Brotherhood-connected Sudanese government made the Sudanese Armed Forces use chemical weapons in the battles against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last year.

The U.S. will now impose sanctions on Sudan

Sorry to sound obtuse, but what does Sudan produce that we want? Sand? We have lots of that.

There have been too many disappearances of Xi Jinping’s loyalists in the military to think Xi is fully in control of the People’s Liberation Army.

@jenniferzeng97 May 21

...Less than a year ago, Xi Jinping personally presided over a promotion ceremony for General He Hongjun, vice director of the CCP's Central Military Commission Political Work Department. Yet, just weeks after his arrest, he reportedly "committed suicide."

What's going on with the CCP military?

Wikipedia says oil, although a lot of that is in the now-independent South Sudan.
