Shy Blondes Meet-Cute Cafe

stonehengemilkywayMadsPeterIversenPhotography.jpg
Mads Peter Iversen Photography

Golden retriever puppy growing up.

German-engineered technique (of course) allows roads to clear tons of rain water, letting the water drip down to under-road pipes.

Dog was fascinated by seeing a dog on a trampoline on TV, so its owners bought it one.

I know a lot of these "bush-build" videos are fake in the sense that they have a pickup truck with a generator and lots of power tools just off-screen, but this is neat.

Seal has massive crush on a diver.

The bestest fetch-dog in the world.

ICYMI: Camel just wants to make friends with horses, who are skeptical because he's so weird-looking.

Big snake. So it's an AI "Cheapfake," as Cheapfake Tapper would call it. But it's a visualization of a legend about a giant snake, that legend also being pure bullshit. But this post nevertheless illustrates an important point about... something.

The Pete "Maverick" Mitchell of drone operators.

Sea otter (?) pops up in a vent in the ice.

Dogs that talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

Huskies start their Drama Classes early.

Summer's coming.

Dog enjoys the water slide.

Goofus and Gallant.

Spare a thruppence for film with added color and ambient sound of Victorian London in 1901, guv'nor?

And without that Aussie's incomprehensible anime Tech thread, the ONT could run longer.

And if we folded the gardening thread and the pet thread and food thread together…

Oh, never mind on all of that. Wouldn't be prudent to mess with the Ordained Order of things.

What happens if water freezes in the porous road structure? Does it crack the whole thing apart?

And, does the porosity make it clog with particles eventually?

Also, there is a increasing problem with streams and rivers flooding in regions where a lot of pavement has been laid down. Dropping the water into pipes doesn't fix that. It was already going to pipes.

117 >>They make shears that can cut steel I-beams. Ought to be possible to make one that could shear strips off windfan blades.

They've been making boats around here out of carbon fiber for years. Virtually every high tech racing sailboat is carbon fiber and not just the hull but pieces like steering wheels and rudders and lots of other bits and pieces.

Cutting it isn't the hard part. Removing the resins and other fibers and then reshaping it has not be solved yet. It's amazingly strong, in one direction anyway, but also brittle and not easy to repurpose cheaply.

Lots of people are trying to find the solution but so far nothing that makes market sense.

120 Those porous roads don't work. The don't last because they are very intolerant to freezing and high pressure loads.

They say granite makes it stronger, but I am betting they are only talking about abrasion and not load. The granite will have the same problem as all porous surfaces with the reduced bonding area between the grains of aggregate making them both weak, and non-robust. That is, when they start to crack they just fall apart.

We need to go back to cobblestones -- Roman tech was peak roadbuilding.

You can't "unbuild" a fiberglass or carbon-fiber layup. Once the resin has cured, it cannot be remelted or dissolved. But it will burn, and burn very well indeed. All that needs to be be done is to break it into pieces small enough to blend with the coal feed going into a power plant. Might also work to fuel a cement kiln; not sure about that, but might be worth a try.

This is obviously because there is no market for used glass fiber waste, nor resin waste. In fact, both become hazardous waste once de-constituted.

The highest form of recycling would be to chop them up into little pieces and burn them.

Burning. this is a poor option because the glass chews up chopper blades, and then mostly just makes ash when burned. You end up paying for a bit of fuel 3 times over. No sane powerplant would want that crap. Bury it. Or better yet, don't make it.

Boat building has been a thing in Rhode Island since the colonies. Some of the most well known sailboat builders in the country built them here. And then Democrats decided that we needed a luxury tax to punish rich people forgetting who built those boats. It devastated the boat building industry here and sent some builders who survived to places like Taiwan where the tax didn't apply.

John Kerry, who voted for the idiotic tax, had $4 million dollar sailboat build in New Zealand to avoid the tax. Because he's a leftist scumbag who is not just stupid but doesn't give a shit about what his policies do. Also, scumbag. That can't be emphasized enough.

The very worst part is that in the GND and previous, the tax credits were for 10 years after being built or "renovated." So the windfarms have been replacing turbines and blades that are only 10 years old, even though they should last 25 years or more depending on design and use. The tax credits are worth more than they cost so we are just paying them to make scrap at this point.

They last longer, but not really since the manufacturers understand this so why bother? 20 to 25 years used to be the standard, but much longer than that gets hard just due to stress cycles, etc.

Posted by: eleven at May 16, 2025 09:13 PM (0HaGk)

208 JackStraw: at least we got to learn about "inertia". Not being an energy buff I didn't know what that meant, but apparently it's a thing with steam (that is, heated from coal or gas - or nuclear) turbines.
Turbines spin. When heat goes out, they still spin - that's inertia. This offers a little bit of time before the workers can turn the heat back on (preferably without blowing everything up like at Pripyat but that's another story).
When the wind no blow, and the windmill stops - that's all the inertia you get. The electricity turns off IMMEDIATELY.
As Abbott's serfs learnt in Texas a few years back.

One of my favorite place on the planet is Block Island.

Don't go there. You will hate it. Seriously, horrible place. o somewhere else.

The island used to get virtually all power from an undersea cable from the mainland and had some of the highest electricity rates of anywhere in the US. A few years ago they put up a few turbines east of the island right in the middle of some prime fishing and sailing ground and it did bring down the rates a bit at the expense of fishing, sailing and beautiful views. Bad trade. And that's one of the instances where someone can even attempt an economic case.

I hate offshore wind turbines with a passion. They are a blight and an economic boondoggle.

Almost as if - go with me here just for a second - these things are completely artificial creations of government activity and distortion?

And of course they meet none of the criteria of an actual "public good" (a key distinction that's apparently some kind of classified thing, as not even "skeptics" of guvamint boondoggles seem to use it or understand it). So histrionic government manipulation and subsidy have no defense of any kind.
