(Mystery click dust warning)

Howdy Hordelings! Happy Mother's Day to all the mama 'ettes! Or is it Mothers Day? More on that later.

If your mom is still around, did you call her today? If your mom is no longer with us, The ONT calls for raised glasses in honor of her and all dearly departed mamas. Step on in, and let's talk about moms (and whatever else is on your mind).

***

Moms Can Relate

Boys doing boy things - with boy results

Toddlers - If you know, you know!

Awesome moment for Mom!

A hack for moms (not sure when every good idea became a "hack")

From X account "Today in History" @historigins:

5 years old - Mom, I love you.

12 years old - Mom, I can't stand you.

16 years old - My mother is very annoying.

18 years old - I'm leaving this house.

25 years old - Mom, you were right.

30 years old - I want to go to my mom's house.

50 years old - I don't want to lose my mother.

70 years old - I would give up everything to have my mom here with me.

You only have one mom. Take care of her while she's still alive.

'Ette Couture (Courtesy of Piper)

It's once again that time of the week to turn the ONT over to our good friend (and mama 'ette) Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------

The Met Gala had us buzzing throughout the week, mainly wondering if anyone had mirrors in their homes. Ever since Cher scandalized the world in 1974 with her Bob Mackie naked illusion dress, attendees have tried to make their outfit the most outrageous, and therefore discussed, of the night. Did anyone buck that trend and look good? Yes, a precious few.

Zendaya looked stunning in St. Laurent, a beautiful blend of Dandy and Disco. The hat was perfect.

IMG_4012r.jpg

Monica Barbaro (I don’t know either) also looked great in Dior. Her pose is…what it is. 😂.

IMG_4010r.jpg

So many people wore Thom Browne. Wendi Deng Murdoch was one of them. The buttons on this are truly incredible. She is paring her dress with illusion heels.

IMG_3939r.jpg

This is the dress from the back. It’s very…unfortunate. The person in the front is Grace Murdoch, someone else had the same purse in black as well. Oops!

IMG_3940r.jpg

The 2025 Country Music Awards happened. I don’t listen to Country. I am not aware who most of these people are, but their looks certainly weren’t topping any charts!

Starting with someone I do know, Nicole Kidman. Y’all. She is giving Hey Arnold right there.

IMG_3997r.jpg

IMG_3998r.jpg

Jessie Murph accessorized with a pig, which is the least problematic part of this outfit.

IMG_3992r.jpg

Bunny XO and her song writer husband, Jelly Roll.

IMG_3995r.jpg

This could have been so much better. she has an hourglass figure that should have been highlighted in many different ways except this one!

Did anyone wear something that wouldn’t make us scratch our head in befuddlement? Yes.

Megan Marony wore this butter yellow satin dress. It has a little fringe on there, but this was not in your face country. It fits her beautifully. You have to be careful with this fabric, it is not forgiving at all, but she looks incredible. Whoever she is. 🤣

IMG_4003r.jpg

We were also treated to our First Lady unveiling a Barbara Bush memorial stamp this week. As always, she was stunning. FLOTUS wore an oversized virgin wool and silk grain de poudre blazer from Christian Dior and a Hervé Pierre leather pencil skirt. The shoes are Louboutin Kate 100s,

Thank you, Piper! Hope you had a fantastic Mother's Day!

Yes - I Looked It Up (My mom should be proud!)

doof_mothersDay.jpg

“Mothers Day” Vs. “Mother’s Day”: What’s The Correct Way For Celebrating Mom?

As we all know, Mother’s Day is the holiday where we let our moms know how special they are. But do you know how to correctly punctuate the name of this day? The apostrophe can be the mother of all hard-to-use punctuation marks, and it seems to be hanging around the wrong place.

Why is the apostrophe so often up to no good? Didn’t it listen to its mother growing up—wait, does an apostrophe have a mother?

***

Mother’s Day, as with other such holidays as Father’s Day, New Year’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day, places the apostrophe before the S. Mother’s Day is an interesting case, though, because its creator Anna Jarvis actually insisted on this particular punctuation placement. Jarvis wanted the day to use a singular possessive to highlight that the day should be dedicated to each family honoring their particular mother.

The apostrophe placement we use signals exactly what Jarvis wanted. If the holiday was instead called “Mothers Day,” it would imply the day was dedicated to celebrating all mothers or motherhood in general. If the day was called “Mothers’ Day,” it would mean the day belonged to all mothers—and you would need to buy a lot more gifts! By using the name Mother’s Day, the holiday indicates that it belongs to each individual mother, just as Jarvis wanted.

1 Happy Mom's Day to all the Moms.

It's funny what memory does. Not long ago, when washing up in the morning, I remembered standing at the green pedestal sink in our bathroom, and Mom telling me to be sure to wash behind my ears.

Which I dutifully do and regularly think of her. Miss ya, Mom. Gone too soon at 101.

The mom from Home Improvement was pretty funny too. (I never thought it was an anti dad show, or if it was written thus, then Tim Allen made him likeable. Same as Family Ties probably didn't mean to side with Alex Keaton but Fox made it happen.)

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump said he will sign an executive order that institutes a "most favored nation" policy for drug pricing, reviving a plan from his first term that he said will reduce prescription drug and pharmaceutical prices "almost immediately, by 30% to 80%."

The order, which Trump plans to sign at 9 a.m. ET on May 12, is expected to direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to adopt the policy, which would set prescription drug prices to match those of comparable countries.

The other night, I mentioned this fascinating anomalous discharge event *inside the house* during some little thunderstorms that went through.

This has got me really intrigued, and I was emailing with one of my late cousins buddies at GSP NWS. Also, had Grok in EM Theory mode posing questions.

Most likely explanation is a rare, crazy field focusing event. Now, if I get some "experts" interested enough, we might get some fancy $$$ meters and instruments out here and see if we see any weird fields during a T-storm here.

The equipment necessary to take the kind of measurements needed gets expensive, we're talking $10Ks of fancy shit.

75 My mom passed away just over 7 years ago. I'm actually ok with that. She wasn't great.

I did get to have a great lunch with my MiL who is super awesome and my smokin' hot wifey and 2 of our 3 kids. It's been a really nice day overall, even if I did have to help my son fix his car.

Hope everyone has had a great Mom's day!

I was saving the part where my dad adopted her two sons from a previous marriage for Father's Day.
They then had a child of their own, so they had five children under the age of six.

Stranger than Fiction- nearly thirty years later, our oldest brother met and married the daughter of the lawyer who handled our adoptions.
She remembered her dad talking about the interesting case he had...

According to Grok, sepsis can indeed go from zero to full-on in as little as 6 hours in people with compromised immune systems and other health problems that mess around with. Also, blood thinners and heavy bleeding can indeed make it worse, which I wouldn't have thought.

And cat scratches can introduce some nasty bacteria that can run amok given the above conditions. Little cat claw pricks and scratches can really turn red and get sore, which does indicate the immune system has to fight something there.

88 When my old friend T was returning from his HS 50th reunion, he and his wife stopped to visit my Mom — their final visit, as it turned out. MiladyJo and I were there.

We were reviewing family members, where are they, what are they up to. T's wife K talked about their youngest son's suicide at 19. We talked about my eldest brother's then-recent death.

And we talked about my other older brother's decades of estrangement from our Mom, and the rest of the family, including his own children and grandchildren. K asked Mom how his estrangement made her feel. Mom paused for a moment of reflection, and said, "I've learned there's more than one way to lose a child."

I'll never forget that moment, K and Mom, two deeply-hurt mothers.

Hard to express how wounded MiladyJo has been, cut off from not only her precious son, but unable to enjoy her grandchildren's babyhood. I try to subsume my resentment in prayer. And take joy that our other two have stayed close.

Lost time is not found again.

It was the craziest thing. It was around 1AM give or take, and some little thunderstorms were rolling through. Nothing to bad, but lightning all around.

So, I'm sitting here at the computer, hearing thunder, and then all of the sudden I hear the strangest sound. It was a sort of crack/slap sound, and it sounded like it was inside the house. Miley heard it too, and we get to looking. Her brother was in bed reading his phone, and comes out all spooked.

He said there was a bright blue flash right in the middle of that closed bedroom, about 3' off the floor, right in the center of the room...

Now, I'll admit had I heard Miley's brother describe that, I would've just assumed it was a close lightning strike, and the blue flash light coming in through window reflected or something and he just thought it was inside.

But I heard it, and it sounded like it was inside the house. I wish I could've seen it myself. I was trying to get him to explain carefully what he saw, but it's still sort of vague.

At first, I was getting excited, was that perhaps a storied ball lightning type event? But nope, he didn't see any spherical ball or anything that persisted, just a blue flash, with the discharge/arc noise.

104 The reflexive Mother's Day fawning is vomit-inducing. If you're a good mother, an actual mom, then God bless you. If you give your kids the love, support, warmth, stability, protection, empathy, encouragement, affection and compassion they need then you are a good mother and should be celebrated. But the mere fact of getting impregnated and birthing offspring just makes for a biologically reproductively functional female mammal just like all the rest.

Yep. I saw a "man-made" plasma ball once, at a wellsite. A 480 volt 3-phase plug on one of the rig electrical panels shorted out to the shell of the plug. There was a loud bang, and this golf ball-sized glowing sphere came bouncing across the lease in my general direction, and simply winked out before it got near me. Fascinating.

If government could just dictate prices by fiat and the market would comply, it would have been done as soon as the first government was formed.

I fail to see how Big Pharma isn't going to test this by pulling out a full media press and embargoing pharmaceuticals while making Trump fully responsible for the millions of people dying because of the lack of meds.

Ball lighting is a real thing, but it is not really understood at all. There are several theories about what it is, a self-sustaining plasma ball set of by some exotic EM behavior is one. Then there are chemical theories (ball of burning something or other set off by lightning current vaporizing the right compounds in a ground channel) among others. Then others I forget.

There have even been some lab set ups that have created something similar.

But the thing, while these theories can explain *some* of the observed behavior, they can't explain all, and worse, contradict some subset of the behavior. For example theory A might explain behavior X and Y well, but would preclude behavior Z. Theory B explains Z, but precludes X.

That leads to speculation ball lightning may be more than one phenomenon.

Simultaneously, we heard a scream from the kitchen, on the opposite side of the house from the tree. Mrs. R, family helper, had been washing dishes and had just taken her hands out of the water when sparks flew across the top of the suds.

Mrs. R was okay. The tree didn't survive.

155 When I was a child I remember helping my mother bring in groceries. Since I was very young I wasn't so much helping really as just following her around. As she reached into trunk I was looking towards the road and I remember seeing a bolt hit the ground maybe 10-20 ft from me.

It wasn't a stormy evening and my mother didn't react. Childhood imagination perhaps but the memory feels real, like other memories I have from this age range.

156 Broadcaster Brian Sussman tells the story of living in Florida when a thunderstorm blew up, as they do in Florida all the time. He went to close the windows in the sunroom when lightning hit close enough to energize the aluminum window frame just as he was touching it. Threw him backwards across the room, he slammed into opposite wall and was knocked cold. When he came to, his toddler son was standing over him saying- Daddy, do it again!

157 My mom passed a year ago. She had no idea who I was, but she was quite sure she didn't want me around. That all started when I took Dad's car keys. He told my husband that I was not to contact them again. As he put it, he was removing me from their Christmas Card list.

Aging and cranky parents are a trial.

Mom always told folks that I was the dumb one. She was quite sure I couldn't make it through college so she didn't send a single dime to support me. She said I was on a fool's errand.

She also never bothered to get me braces when the dentist said she should. She said it would be a waste of money. I have awful teeth that have cost me thousands of dollars over the years.

I was the fourth girl, the last one before the desired boy. I should probably never have been born, but here I am.

I loved my mother, and I really don't know why. I still pray for her, because I am supposed to. That's about all there is to it.

158 I don't think Gaza is going to be a Palestinian State but it's possible for West Bank.
Israel has burned a lot of goodwill. Not so much for Gaza (fuck Gaza) but because too many proIsrael voices have been doxxing antiIsrael commenters and generally playing the bully. I've seen this on Jihadwatch, what with Skrbina / "Dalton". (And they probably doxxed the wrong doxx.)
Not to mention that House bill which would have made a boycott illegal.
It's been adding up, as Cernovich has documented.

162 Mom also hated my kid. I expect it was because my son is adopted from Guatemala, and wasn't my bio kid. She and Dad were both somewhat racist. They said he couldn't hang out with them because they didn't trust him. They extolled the virtues of my sisters' kids constantly, but they wouldn't spend time with mine.

I have racked my brain to figure out what I did to deserve the kind of dislike and indifference my mom dished out. Oddly, she thought my husband was wonderful, but me? Not so much.

It isn't like I didn't get anything from her. She taught me to garden, to cook, to can, to sew, to knit, all sorts of productive things. She just made it clear that she didn't care for me or mine.

Maybe I came out sidewise when I was born. No idea.

163 I recall there was a series of UFO sightings in Scandinavia. The leading theory was ball lightning/piezoelectric effect caused by large quantities of quartz in the region.
Posted by: 18-1 at May 11, 2025 11:33 PM (t0Rmr)

As an explanation, that ranks right up there with swamp gas. One: there are large quantities of quartz in the ground nearly everywhere. It's a very abundant and widely-dispersed mineral. Two: the "piezo" part of "piezoelectric" means "pressure". Quartz (and many other things) develops an electric charge on certain crystal faces when the crystal is bent. (or the crystal will bend if an electric charge is applied to it) For a current to be generated, quartz would have to be under an oscillating strain.

The argument here was that it was a tectonically active region and that's what was causing the stress on the quartz.

TBH, whether this answer is accurate or not, I think there should be more study along these lines. I've mentioned before I don't believe there are aliens visiting the earth (I think it is clear we are the only intelligent life, at least in our own galaxy) but people see and rightly would like to know what they saw and want answers .

Anyway, the "working hypothesis" on what this was is some sort of rare (million to one shot, doc!) field focusing effect. Somehow, someway, we got a high E field in a small region high enough to ionize air.

Is that possible? Yep, but it would be a rare thing for some ambient conditions to be able to do that naturally. Lightning has high frequency components (100 kHz - MHz components), and with RF crazy shit can happen.

Now rock. That came up talking about this. Turns out here the bedrock comes close to the surface especially right here at the house. Less than 6'. I forget the types, but what's important is it be conductive.

"Conductive veins" as Mrs. Duke's engineers have called it have given them fits with stray voltage around here over the years (think this "vein" is transmitting neutral voltage drop over the distribution line run from Point A to point B, bringing ground potential relative to power line neutral high enough to cause shocks to people).

That has lightning current ramifications, channeling ground currents.

There was a lightning story my father told when he was a young man. He had his father, and some other field hands were out hoeing in a patch of cotton. Thundercloud came up, but still far away, but they were watching it. Then, they felt the hair standing up on their arms and heads. Heard some hissing. They threw down their hoes and ran like hell. Boom! Lightning struck right there in that spot.

That was an encounter with a local "ground streamer" forming. Basic mechanism of lighting. Thundercloud is a charge separation engine (and that is not completely understood). Top of cloud (usually) gets positive, bottom gets negative. Now, bottom of cloud is closer to ground than the bottom to the top. Cloud to ground lightning is transferring negative charge to the ground. Finally, it has to balance out, and that's the positive stroke lightning, which is usually much stronger.

Now, high E field on bottom of cloud. Random ionization starts. A little fractal-like jagged "finger" of ionization starts working its way from the bottom of the cloud towards the ground. This is dubbed a "stepped leader". This is conductive, and brings the charge closer to the ground. E field gets stronger closer. Ground starts to respond with charge building up underneath. Ionization starts to happen there. This is a ground streamer.

Now, when the stepped leader and ground streamer meet, the circuit is closed, and Boom, you get a discharge. Current is typically around 30 - 50kA. And it's RF, and sort of pulsing.

What you feel, with the hair standing up, and the hissing and popping is the charge build up and ionization of the ground streamer around you. If you notice that, it's time to act, right then.

Running is the optimum thing to do. There's a chance you could run into it, rather than away from it, but that's the chance you have to take. Just standing there, even hitting the deck and balling up is less odds of survival.

234 The air battle between India and Pakistan sounds fascinating from a military standpoint. Reports are that there was a “dogfight” involving about 125 aircraft; and yet neither side ever left its own territory, the fight being conducted by both sides shooting loads of long range air to air missiles at each other, from distances up to 100 miles apart.

So it will be impossible to confirm what was shot down, if any were lost from either side they would have fallen into their own territory.

241 My electric death story.

Summertime thunderstorm, me at home as a young Count. Had opened the front door to watch through the screen door. Saw a squirrel scampering along the power line / telephone line across the street, close to the transformer can.

Suddenly, there was a blue ball of light surrounding the squirrel. Then immediately, a tremendous clap of thunder. The blue light stayed visible for a few seconds, traveling back to the transformer, which then blew, darkening the street.

Just a few glowing cinders of the unlucky squirrel fell to the street.

They’ve been using some; but neither side appears to have gotten into that tech as much as they should have.
Read a great thread on X about the rapid drown development; both sides (although the Ukes are better at it) are now neutralizing air defense systems by sending large numbers of cheap decoy drones near a target, with only a few deadly drones mixed in with them.

She hardly seemed to know me when I called her today. My sister who has guardianship over her says that sometimes she doesn’t even know her own daughter, despite my sister seeing her almost every single day. Even though she lives halfway across the continent, I need to go see her in person soon, not that she will know me or remember my visit 5 minutes after I leave. At least we saved will all be restored eventually in Heaven. God bless you all, and if the Holy Spirit has not come to you, I pray He will soon, so that you may believe and be saved.
