Elephants have very sensitive skin, which I imagine is the primary determinant in the pain felt by a mammal from an electric fence.

I always hated getting zapped by the fence, although it’s not that painful. More just.. shocking/distressing.

Huh? It’s a few thousand volts to your system. You feel it everywhere. Muscles and all over your body.

Why would an elephant be less susceptible to that? They have high nerve fiber density, despite their thick hide. Their thick hide isn’t going to protect them.

Interesting, thick hair does. Alpacas and sheep require higher voltages because their thick fur insulates them. I imagine that an elephants needs wouldn’t be far from a large, mostly-hairless mammal. Maybe a bit higher than beef bulls.

As a kid I would go with my dad to "walk the fence". Checking for any problems in the electric fence. We were walking along one time and dad kept getting a little buzz of current. Stopped trying to find the problem. Nothing, keep going, zzzzapp, another little buzz. Repeat a few more times before Dad figured out what was happening. I was holding his hand and walking with my hand out just hovering above the wire. I occasionally touched it and didn't feel anything. Current went thru me and zapped Dad. He moved me to his opposite side so he was next to the wire.

I walked away from a cup of coffee. I am now back to it. I can easily heat it up but what is the limit of bugs allowed in it to still be considered drinkable?

Zero. Coffee should have zero bugs in it. My personal preference is that it should also have zero cream and zero sugar too. Whiskey or peppermint schnapps are the only acceptable additives to coffee.

That’s a great story. I know more than once I told my Dad the fence was off when it wasn’t. In my defense we had like five fence chargers scattered all around the barn and it was unclear which went to which section of fence.

Her mom died when she was 8. Then her brother died a few months ago. It's had such a profound effect on her life, I can't really even fathom it.

Little Dagny cat is sitting in the bedroom, in her latest perch, just behind my computer. I'll bet she will love the "overreacted" cat video, and the one of the miniature pony galloping around. Regular horses make her nervous because they're so big -- but this little white one looks like a pet.

A simple modification to First Law would take care of that -- remove the phrase "or through inaction, allow a human to come to harm." Then the robots could stand by and watch people "destroy" themselves.

Asimov had just such a story in I, Robot, called "Little Lost Robot." A classic example of the detective story structure applied to an SF story.

He gave John Campbell credit for outlining the skeleton of the Three Laws in one of their chats in his office when the young Asimov was just starting to sell his stories . . . and the Emerson (?) quote that was the germ of IA's short classic "Nightfall" came, he said, from Campbell too.

"Little Lost Robot" would have made a fine Outer Limits episode, either in the '60s or the '90s. There was a BBC production done in about 1962, and I've watched it on YouTube. It's directed very much like episodes of I, Claudius would be years later -- almost no music and with lots of closeups.

Years ago, I read a short story by one of the SF authors of the day - perhaps Asimov. The plot, as I remember it, was that the robot was programmed to protect itself (of course). I forget why, but the robot needed to be destroyed and fought off attempts to that end. Eventually, a human basically used a laser pointer to flash on the power source that controlled the robot. The robot reacted to that and in destroying the power source, destroyed himself. Does that ring any bells? What is the name of the story.

I'm sorry to hear that Jim Sunk New Dawn has died. He will most surely be missed.

I also have a family estrangement: my mother, father, and sister are now gone, and my only remaining family member is my younger brother, who has walked on the dark side off and on since he was a teenager. Dad made him POA (despite my pleas), and my brother went criminal with the money -- to protect Dad and myself, I had to take him to court to have a 3rd-party conservator appointed.

My brother swore I was dead to him, and has never looked me in the face again: even at our father's funeral. He had also tried on at least 2 occasions to hasten Dad's death.

Now he makes the rounds of the extended family, laying on the oleaginous charm. They know he's a con man, but they fall for it to a certain extent. He doesn't give a damn about them, but he knows I do, so he doesn't want me to even have an easy relationship with my cousins. Of course, he turned his three daughters against me, which is painful.

Only my late sister's kids, now 40 and 37, know the full extent of his criminal acts (five felonies, per the court).

Grief.

The Kirk one is by David A. Goodman, who according to his bio on the jacket wrote for Star Trek: Enterprise among other things. I'd have to look to see who did the Spock one. There is also one each for Janeway, Picard, and Sisko.

The Kirk one at least is pretty well done. Goodman starts with the young Kirk at age nine in Iowa, and gives us context for a lot of the incidents we only heard about in the show. Gary Mitchell's mention of "rodent things on Dimorous" and the poison darts they threw is filled out, and we're shown Carol Marcus and Ruth and Janet and Edith Keeler. The important thing is that "Kirk" tells us how he felt about the important events in his life and career, and the lessons he learned.

You can always get it from the library, Anna. That's what I did.

282 Prayers for all those with family strife. I am the oldest of eight sibs. One of the sisters is an Olympic Level ass and has closed off contact with most of us. None of us can recall any sight or BS that caused her to be so upset with the rest of us. It's a shame but it is what it is.

I don't know for sure, but "Life Hutch" might have been his very first published story. It's kind of a puzzle box tale, very much unlike his later work. You'd hardly think the author of this one could later produce something like "'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the TickTockMan" or "Deathbird."

Yes, Nurse, I usually headed off to bed about 7:45 -- in summer here, it's still light -- so I could rise early, work out, and get to my office around dawn to get a parking place. Now bedtime is around 10 and I crawl out of bed anywhere from 4:45 to 5:30 am, with a ninety-minute nap in the afternoon. Lovely.

It's not a great work, Anna, but it was a fun read. The important thing is that my old buddy, who introduced me to Trek way back when the show was new, would probably get a major kick out of it.

Goodman does bring up one important idea: That when the ship is flung back in time three days during the "Naked Time" incident, they could then go back to the planet -- which had not yet broken up -- and rescue the staff before they died; and "Kirk" tells us they did that. Nice touch.
