Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Piper - 1 m.jpeg

Meet our one-year-old Australian Cattle Dog mix (Red Heeler variety) who was named Piper by our granddaughters. She came to us at three months of age after having been found abandoned at about 6 weeks old on the nearby Navaho Reservation in Utah. A rescue group called Underdogs took her in, fostered her and rehabbed her for several weeks. She has fit in well with our senior citizen Australian Shepherd Buckley who showed up on the Pet Thread some years ago. They spend a lot of time rough housing and play fighting.  He teaches her all his old bad habits and she teaches him a few new ones of her own.  All in all a positive lift for the old boy.

She stands about 16 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 50 lbs. She has freakishly long legs.  She is not the smartest dog I've ever had but the d'awwww cuteness factor is off the charts. Who's a good girl?regards, muldoon

Wow. You're right about the cuteness factor. That portrait is remarkable.

This is the last entry we received for the Pet Thread from jewells45 (November 2, 2024 post). She sent us information on rescued dogs at:

Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary in Independence, MO

Making jewelry, often for members of The Horde, was one marvelous connection Jewells had with AoSHQ, but it certainly was not the only one.

She was also remarkable for her dedication to senior dogs in need. Many of us looked forward to her updates.

From Jewells:

Brody.jpg

This is Brody, a rat terrier we rescued from the Independence MO animal shelter. He's 15 years and is a cuddle bug.

It felt like things had stagnated at Sheps's over the past year or so but I think things may finally change. JJ finally got adopted and was the reason we could never bring a small dog into the mix. He found the perfect home. Then sadly Roscoe and Hope both crossed the rainbow bridge. They were our 2 invalids.

We have also begun earnest fund raising to make big improvements to Shep's including an expansion of the original building. The cost is $900,000 and we have raised about $200,000 so far. I'm hoping to sign up to volunteer very soon.

Jewells was thinking about the future of Shep's Place and the dogs served by the volunteers there even as her health declined. Donations from members of The Horde have been suggested in several posts here at AoSHQ. Check in the comment thread below for specific information on donations already underway.

Jewells has introduced us to quite a few loveable senior dogs at Shep's Place over the years. We're going to miss you and the sweet dogs, Jewells.

Here are a few more, from July 6, 2024:

3 doxxies.jpg

From Jewells:

These three cuties are the newest addition to Shep's. Again, they went straight to foster so I'll never get to meet them darn it! Maudie is 12, Augie is 11 and Chug is 8. Their owner passed away. We are hoping to adopt all three out together.

What adorable doxies! And they are not all the same. Thanks for sending the great photo, Jewells!

And we also met her own grand pup, Moose. He knew when she didn't feel good and tried to make her feel better. Good boy, Moose.

crows r ravens.jpeg

We call them crows although they may be ravens. Picture is from my car going down my driveway. They landed about 20 feet from my car. I stopped and took pictures because one was playing with a stick and one had a piece of bread, which means a neighbor is feeding them. I hate them!

NorCal Sierra Foothills Lurker

So, to the rest of The Horde, what are your thoughts about crows and ravens? Like them around? Wish they wouldn't scare off other birds? Do they ever intimidate your pets?

Why do you think the neighbor is feeding those crows?

We get crows, along with other birds, in our yard. The crows are usually the boldest birds around the garden kitties.

This morning, on the day she was to be shown in Best of Breed competition at our National Specialty, hard-luck Diana came out of the RV awkwardly, wrenched her back and lamed herself. Her Majesty couldn't do anything but pull her from the competition. It's a great disappointment for us, but we hope she recovers quickly and fully.

9 so my first ever cat has been an education. first dealt with food and environmental allergies (a whole lot of them too) and that was two years or so of weekly immunotherapy injections for him

now just a bit ago he went a bit crazy around bedtime, trying to pee and just squeezing a bit out, I called the 24 hr ER vet and they told me to get there ASAP

his ultrasound and X-rays were clear of a blockage or anything obvious so I chose not to have him admitted for further testing/procedures and treat him with some meds and take him to the normal vet yesterday.

that's going ok but the meds really knock him out and it's a little scary. that said right after his first dose he peed like a racehorse so.

I'm too nervous still to sleep I just check on him constantly the poor thing! hoping we'll both be calmer after the 10 days of medication ends, I dunno.

I'm a little freaked out by this. allergies sucked but they weren't going to kill him or anything.

11 I watched nature in action a couple of years ago in the Pentagon courtyard. A squirrel had gotten himself a tasty Baby Ruth candybar wrapper with some leftover candy still on it. A couple of Ravens were ganging up on it but the squirrel fought back, hard. It had acquired that Baby Ruth wrapper and it wasn't giving it up for any critter. Not sure the outcome as I went back inside. The only thing that was missing was National Geographic theme song playing in the background.

19 My sister's dog saves her not only from delivery trucks but *also* low-flying aircraft. And birds. We're working on reducing the threat level from Defcon-Eleventy but it's a slog. (He's a good boy. Just needs a hobby.)

I have an extended family of crows I feed peanuts, but only on request--no piles of food. For one thing, rats. For another, it gets me interaction. They call each other when I give the signal. Right now it is baby time, so all the adults are off busy dealing with nests and hatchlings. I sometimes get the moody teenagers showing up, one or two at a time, to complain that nobody is feeding them and everything is boring.

23 I sometimes get the moody teenagers showing up, one or two at a time, to complain that nobody is feeding them and everything is boring.

We had a baby crow in the driveway that had been booted out of the nest because apparently crows do that to their youngsters. I went to the garage, grabbed a handful of kibble and left it close by while the parents were yelling at me.

Fast forward a few months later and we had close to forty crows in the trees in our house. Word gets around.

Our dog ignores most birds but she HATES vultures. (We Texans call them all buzzards.) They periodically land on our roof and she goes berserk barking at them until they fly off. I have no idea where the hate springs from, but it's been consistent since she came to live with us nearly 4 years ago.

Well, Miss D is not yet three years old. Her mother Delilah was almost 6 when she won the National in 2021 and her grandmother Lacey was 8 1/2 when she won it in 2006. So Diana has lots of time.

Borzoi are slow to mature and she won't be really competitive for at least a year. Her sister Rosalind is returning with HM and we'll be showing her to her championship. If Ros and her half-brother Zeus finish, their dam Delilah will have five champion offspring to her credit.

32 Precious the Bichon is feeling her 17 years with some limping and slower movements. But she still wags her tail when we go for (slow) walks and prances a bit when we get home. And she has no problem waiting at the top of the stairs when one of us comes up from the 'salle de fromage'. That's the cheese room for non-Frogs. Most people call it a kitchen.

Actually, she is handling the aches of aging better than I am. At least she is quieter about it.

When we got her, we were told that ACD's are in fact very popular on the reservation, but that usually males are preferred, and females will often be abandoned or dropped off anonymously at homes of families known to work with Underdogs, knowing they will be picked up.

News to me that red heelers are also known as Queensland heelers and were originally a cross between a standard collie and a dingo.

She doesn't nip at heels but she will do a gentle bump with her snout on the back of my ankles when we are out walking.

38 Ravens have a great purpose. Clean up crew.

Last fall a grouse splatted itself against our big picture window. The hit permanently etched the glass, wing pattern and all.

Grouse died on the roof outside the window.

Before we could clean up that sorry soul, the ravens took care of it.

Much obliged. Now who's gonna replace my window? Dammit.

48 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

Yes, little Bro did look almost like a puppy after his shearing. Does the hair on certain dog breeds continue to grow throughout life? I thought not, thus the term "fur." Certainly my cats' fur grows only so much and then stops. When Chekov D. Siberian was sheared in '21 to remove some clots and mats in his fur, the fur grew back to where his coat had been before the shearing, but no longer.

50 I have a question. Our cat , Pynchon, is training for the "Door dash Olympics" and wants to go out at any opportunity. I think I asked this last year. We need to get a good flea collar. Whatever we had last year we needed to replace because it made him really uncomfortable and he scratched a lot. I can't recall what we ended up with .Is there a good collar to get in a pet store or is something I should get from the vet? Thanks.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 26, 2025 04:21 PM (E+ZXg)

51 Black Orchid, you mentioned your Bengal cat earlier this morning. I'm glad he's doing well. My recommendation of a water fountain still holds, if you didn't see it earlier: the sort of thing that you plug in, fill the reservoir with water, and then the water recirculates through a filter. You have to replenish the water every day or so. The moving water seems to attract a cat and get him to drink more often. Not expensive either in purchase price or power consumption. Even so, it'll be worth it if it prevents kidney or urinary problems.

56 Decades ago the vets' thinking about urinary blockages in male cats was that ash content in even wet food could lead to problems. I carefully selected low ash % canned food for big red tabby Arizona. He still developed the problem when he was about six, but it never recurred. He always drank from a bowl of fresh water.

UTIs are another story. As I mentioned earlier, big black Stirling developed just such a case when he was about six months old. (I asked him where he'd been partying to pick up such a thing, but he declined to answer.) He's been fine since.

60 Come to think of it, Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat (RIP) suddenly developed a blockage one day when she was about six. I'd seen the symptoms and rushed her in, even though she was a female cat and this was supposed to be a male cat problem.

It turned out Marie was way ahead of her time: a gender-fluid cat. *She'd been born male* but her little batteries had never descended, and so all her vets in the past had mistakenly "assigned" her as female.

The blockage was cleared up and never recurred. But we couldn't change her name. What were we going to call her, "Murray" Antoinette? And to this day we still call her "she."

73 Tough crowd. I like crows. They have personality.

74 Wolfus, giving them a pill is not that difficult. Cats are much more sensitive to topicals than dogs. Will your cats let you pick them up?

75 >>>NR Pax:
On the left is our dog Kroger on the right is our guest Shanti. As you can see, Kroger was sharing his bed under protest. Thankfully, no squabbles broke out from it.

From just the photo--not looking at your description--I don't see clues about who is the bed-owner and who is the guest/interloper.

80 Wolfus,
Lucy gets oral medication every day twice a day.

I pick her up, put her next to me, pry her mouth open and drop a pill on the back of her tongue.

Not difficult.

Sure; Stirling is big but lets me hold him for a time, and Dagny kicks sometimes but frequently holds still. My experience with cats and pills has been unfortunate. If there were a way to wrap the pill in some food they like -- but I've tried those pill pockets, and they don't work easily.

83 nurse, yep. If I have to deal with one that is fussy I just wrap them in a towel, put them head facing away from me in my lap, open their mouth from the interdental space and place the pill far enough back they have to swallow

84 Used to have a kid's book, Little Bird Tweet, with illustrations. Would "read" it to my Senegal. He would go Wheee! for every page except the crow page. Then he would blow raspberries and say Arrrgh. Crows were mean to him that time he ran away from home.

85 Little tuxedo cat Oreo had to take pills once. I'd get it in her, I'd think she'd swallowed it, and then p-tooey, out it came. It took three tries to get it actually down her gullet. And she was a very placid cat.

I'd hate to buy $40 worth of pills and find it impossible to get them down the cats.

88 I had to give Lucy iv fluids twice a day for months after her acute kidney injury.

We wrapped her up in a towel, one kid held her, we hung the iv bag on the door and I poked her. We had to keep her still for 7-8 minutes while she got her fluids.

After that, pills are easy.

90 I love crows and ravens. At our place in Florida I feed the crows in the morning. They sqawk and then fly in and eat and chat with each other. They left me a shiney penny on the step of our rv. At least, I want to think it was them. They have never bothered our pups. In Utah, the ravens would land in our daughters yard but their doberman would chase them. I also love the magpies we saw in Montana and Wyoming. I would love to get to know them.

Oh, she'd help. I'm not sure a squad of Green Berets would be enough, though. I tried gently prying Stirling's jaws open just now as he lounged on the counter top, and he resisted.

Is it possible to crush these Capstar pills up and put them in the cats' food?

Perhaps Kroger's annoyed expression does not come through well on the picture. But at least he shared.

94 Wolfus, there lies the problem. You have to firmly hold the cats head and raise it and do it the attitude that this is going to happen.

This is exactly it. Approach with the attitude of, “hey dude, this is going to happen,” and they sense it.

Ben Had, I didn’t have to find a vein, it went intradermal at the nape of her neck. Pretty easy actually.
