Gun Thread: Easter Bunny Edition!

042025 Hair-Hare-In-Scope-Optics scaled.jpg
A Gunthread Easter favorite!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! Happy Easter everybody! Has everyone bitten the head off their chocolate bunny yet?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
Fundamentals of pleasant interactions with the po-lice, that is.

OK, so summer is nearly upon us which means summer road travel with firearms. Let's review some fundamentals with our pals the Armed Attorneys.

Federal Safe Passage Act

Here's the text of 18 U.S.C. section 926A

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

So theoretically you're protected as long as you follow three key provisions; the weapon is legal for you to possess in both the beginning and ending jurisdictions, you don't stop along the way, and it's properly secured in your vehicle.

Q: Weasel, are you a lawyer?
A: No, no I am not. Please pay no attention to anything I say.

Q: Are you sure?
A: Yes. Absolutely.

See that giant gray area of quoted text just up above? There is stuff in there that can get you in big trouble, as opposed to saving your ass, if you aren't very careful. What constitutes stopping, for example? A pee break or to fill up with gas? How does one define "readily accessible?" Floating around on the back seat cool? Whose definition matters? Yours? Hopefully you get the idea.

I think the sensible thing to do is to know the law in the jurisdictions you will be passing through, and plan accordingly. "Planning accordingly" can easily be interpreted as avoiding altogether. Here is a good website from USCCA with an interactive map of gun laws in the 50 states (and territories, in the event you are driving to Puerto Rico). Another good resource is the CCW app which I have on my phone for easy reference.

Next, how to act during a traffic stop.

and...

Just be polite and be respectful. If you think the cop is wrong about something, the side of the road is not the place for you to seek a redress of grievances. If the cop asks for your license, give him or her your license. If him or her ask you to take it out of your wallet with your toes, then take it out of your wallet with your toes. I am not saying the cops are correct even close to all of the time, but by being polite and respectful, you at least have a chance of not making matters worse.

So how do all y'all feel about intrastate travel with firearms? Does it make you a nervous wreck or is it no biggie? Whatever the case, I hope you all have a safe and trouble-free summer of Happy Armed Motoring!

NoVaMoMe 2025!

042025 hello-moron scaled.jpg

The official date is Saturday, June 21st, so mark that on your calendars. We will again have a sign-up process but have decided to forgo the pre-paid buffet in favor of just having people order for themselves from the casual cafe-style menu. We'll have more exciting news and specifics to share soon!

As I mentioned last week, bluebell and I sincerely hope you can join the festivities. We promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes us happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone and we will have strategically located potted plants for you to hide behind. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and come meet your pals!

Remember last week when you thought you heard me say that actual updates were coming soon, possibly as soon as this Sunday? Well, you were obviously mistaken.

Details coming next Sunday. Swearsies!

Cigar of the Week

042025 san-cristobal-standard-band-a scaled.jpg

This week our pal Marty reviews the San Cristobal de la Habana

Slavyanka is the observant one. Yesterday I went to an Eastern European grocery (what a zoo! - Orthodox peeps really go all out at Easter) and picked up a bunch of meat, cheeses
and other things that will go in the Easter basket to be blessed at midnight mass tomorrow. I'll go with her but she's been 3 times this week already.

I busied myself putting together a shelf for my cordless tools, making some char cloth, changing the brake fluid on my ATV, tuning the new carb on the rototiller and making basil pesto and cod for dinner.

Now I'm relaxing with a San Cristobal de La Habana a friend brought back from Cuba. A really nice smoke, paired with some 15 year old Dawhinnie. The cigar had an excellent draw, burned clean and was just the perfect thing for a very mild spring night.

Thank you, Marty! For those interested, The San Cristobal cigars start around $20 each, and up (way up).

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

21 There are some significant non-free states and some that use aggressive police search tactics.

First, never consent to having your vehicle searched, personally, I will not consent either to field sobriety tests as these are subjective searches that physically impaired or old people often have difficulty to do.

Personally, I would never mention using various legal prescription drugs either as police are now aggressively looking for revenue and often will turn that admission that you are using benedryl etc. into impaired driving charges.

Be nice, be pleasant, but refuse any attempt by police to prolong the encounter-take your ticket, etc. and get the heck out of there. Highway patrol have specific training in getting you to admit things on the side of the road to permit them to search the vehicle, impound your car, test you for impaired driving (not just DUI anymore), and if your car is impounded, they can do what is called an inventory search without a warrant.

Kansas State Police just got busted for their attempts to prolong ticket stops just so they can get drug dogs out to search your vehicle. TN had a problem with people getting unjust impaired driving charges.

They use vegetable oil rather than cocoa butter is my guess. FDA allowed that shit years ago when candy mfgs argued that high prices of cocoa at the time should allow them a cheaper alternative.

Some of it is also loaded with food additives such as preservatives.

36 That P365 shoots when you shake it video is very clickbait-y as that is not the problem described. I think this guy has a bit or beef with Sig for whatever reason (I believe I have seen a P320 video by him that also seemed to overstate the P320 issue.)

At any rate the "shoots when you shake it" only applies with the trigger depressed. Something seems wrong with that particular pistol as the slide seems to be hanging up a bit and the striker will not strike as in the intro he shows depressed trigger does its job when you push on the slide some.

It's like saying that there is a serious problem with the 1911 because someone had one go full auto at the range.

The new chassis system has its virtues but so far not great triggers. Polymer frames generally have poorer triggers (if glass rod snapping is your criteria) than metal framed firearms.

Polymer frames deflect and move more during firing and that includes the pins through the frame to hold the trigger in place which can subtly change trigger geometry. That same issue can hurt accuracy a bit also compared with metal framed pistolas but at the same time have less felt recoil due the frame flexing.

So, people improving polymer, if not chassis types, triggers rely on aftermarket kits for the most part where key parts are polished, replaced, etc. to get the best trigger to be had from it like APEX for the M&P, and several options for Glocks.

Metal framed pistols, generally rely on gunsmiths carefully polishing certain surfaces and changing out springs.

To do that with a chassis fired, you have to replace the 'gun' aka chassis.

Somewhere about 600 or so in the last two years of wrongful charges of impaired driving. TN now requires blood tests (due to dope smokers) instead of the older breathanalyzer tests to catch impaired drivers and excessive reliance on dubious field sobriety tests. Backlog of blood tests at labs is months because they check for all substances to back up their charges.

52 Since Weasel has introduced the po-lease into this week's GT, I shall relate an interesting happening about two weeks ago.

I was gassing up at a local stop-n-rob. The printer on the pump wasn't working, and I was making my way inside to get a receipt, when I noticed a fairly tatted-up woman filling up, while talking into a phone, and with a lit cigarette in the other. There were a couple of cops fueling up as well.

Just as I was egressing, the woman squirted gas on her arm as she was trying to return the nozzle to the pump. A second or so later, it caught fire from her cigarette. She jumped back and started waving her arm back and forth vigorously. The cops ran over to her, and helped her get it out. An ambulance showed up and checked her out, but rather than go with them, the cops arrested her, and put her in their car.

As I returned to my car, I asked one of the cops what they arrested her for. He looked at me like I was slightly retarded, and said "Brandishing a fire arm."

True, when you depress the trigger safety, you have circumvented the firing pin block in that design and thus shaking it could cause it to discharge at that point whether from completing the rest of the short trigger stroke or because with the firing pin block moved out of position, the sear slips a bit.

Not crazy about that particular design but if it was particular unsafe, the military would have had multiple issues with Private Pyles at the gun range already.

Revolvers are one of the few examples (outside of purposeful match built semi autos or those worked on by master gunsmiths), that can have that glass rod breaking trigger, at least in single action, straight from the factory if made by a good manufacturer.

The rest generally require monkeying around with and in some cases, can make them unsafe. Almost always, never try to 'improve' a single action trigger pull by stoning the single action notch on a double action revolver. You will likely create an unsafe firearm. Usually better to replace the hammer or something else if the single action notch is messed up.

66 I’m gonna call bs on the sig 365xl issue while I’m waiting to eat my second desert. Sig has been very responsive to any reported issues, especially if you’re .mil. They’ve have addressed a lot of these cases in detail and it’s beating a dead horse at this point. Their people are always on top of these things to the point they’re practically eating the food out of your fridge. Now, there isn’t a stock trigger on a single pistol I have that hasn’t been worked, bar none. I don’t like any of them because I’m picky about a single feel across all my weapons. But enough already.

“ To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless.”

67 Took my new H&K CC9 to the range this weekend for the first time. My first rounds fired were Federal Syntech 124 grain ammo. Recoil with this round was a bit more than "mild," but still definitely controllable. But for reasons still unknown, the rounds impacted a bit low on a 10 yard target. I did manage to get a decent group. I also tried shooting one handed at 7 yards. The rounds weren't tight, but it wasn't bad considering that it was one hand only.
Next up, 124 grain frangible +P ammo. This ammo shot to point of aim, but felt recoil definitely entered what I'd call "significant" territory. It's still controllable, but I tired quickly when shooting this round. Interestingly, I shot a tighter group at 10 yards with the +P rounds than I did with the normal pressure Syntech ammo. One handed with +P ammo is quite a handful.
My LGS only had Federal 147 grain HST on hand for defense ammo, so I tested some.in the CC9. Again, felt recoil was fairly stout, but I shot a pretty tight group at ten yards and one handed at 7 yards. Total rounds fired: 50 rounds. No malfunctions of any kind - you expect that out of an H&K. (1 of 2)

If you are unfortunate enough to have a fire and your firearms are in a gunsafe. Break into that safe asap as when gypsum is exposed to a fire, it creates steam which then accelerates rust on the firearms with. Flooding via waterhoses putting out the fire can make it even worse.

Quickest way from pristine to rusty you can get.

Also avoid those that end up getting a really dark bluish shiny surface after a fire (usually stocks and other wood/plastic parts are charred or melted in the safe as well.

It is essentially a variant of fire bluing but unlike Colt did back in the day, uncontrolled temperatures basically ruin the steel temper to teh extent these can be dangerous to fire. Get a master gunsmith to look over these if that happens as they might be a display piece from that point forward in time.

79 So, range report: The ugly. First off, the 06 has seen its last match until the new barrel arrives. From the way it's acting, I believe it's basically a smooth bore for the first few inches before the round engages the rifling.

With that, I hit the 1,000 yard match and shot every bit as well as I thought I would. Not to mention not keeping down on the rifle, following through the shot, etc. It was just bad. The only up side of the match was, I did catch the wind shift. In a matter of just a couple minutes the wind completely shifted from left to right to right to left. But, I didn't compensate enough, as it gusted up far more than I compensated for. I managed to shoot myself to a last place finish of 70. I've been running very middle of the pack but yesterday just was not my day.

Eh, other than DEI types, my father was an Army Officer (Ordnance) in the post Vietnam end of the draft era before the Reagan revival. Some units had their officers be escorted by MPs if they had cause to visit enlisted barracks. Stripes (movie) was the funny side of it but Army in particular was desperate for warm bodies and enlisted a lot of people that should have never been admitted into the Army.

Three up, three down summary:
Pluses:
- Trigger is good (reported at about 5 pounds).
- Uses lever to disassemble pistol. No need to squeeze trigger as part field stripping.
- Good ergonomics. Fits my hand well, especially with 12 round magazines. 10 round magazines are OK.
Minuses:
- Cost ($699 MSRP - expensive for its class)
- All controls and the slide are really stiff right out of the box.
- Felt recoil might be uncomfortable for some, especially when using defensive loads.

I bought this old flail mower that had a Wisonsin v-twin engine on it. I couldn't get it to crank and went through several things that should have fixed it. Still nothing, not even a cough out of it. I finally reached a point of realizing that life is short, and even if I got it running, its still a 50 year old engine with expensive parts and little support. I am going to repower it with a cheap Chinese Honda clone with more power and half the displacement and plenty of parts availability. The vintage engine still impresses me - the quality of the metal is different from back then, and it isn't like the 70s were the glory days of US manufacturing. I will still keep it as a project.

Ed L. From what I've read, the H&K CCP weighs about 18-19 ounces. That is subcompact in weight and physics dictates that felt recoil is going to be an issue with that light of a weight. Same issue with Airweight or lighter snubbies firing +p 38 Special.

Folks, that is the general issue with small and light firearms, easy to carry but a lot tougher to shoot. I've found that at 28-29 oz, 9mm, even +p is not bad in recoil, as you go lower, felt recoil increases and as the frame shrinks in size, all that recoil is focused on a smaller sq area of your hand accentuating the recoil.

So always try one of these small firearms before you buy one especially if you are new to handguns. Same thing goes for light plastic stocks in rifles or even felt recoil in pistol caliber carbines (they often use a blowback mechanism to eject and load a new round) which makes felt recoil impulse heavier to the arm or shoulder than you would otherwise expect.

Military (and some cop departments) use a 55 gallon barrel up in the air that is filled with sand usually. When you are removing active ammunition from the rifle at the end of your shift, etc., you then dry fire the weapon after you have removed the magazine and the bullet in the chamber (which not everyone checks). Thus, if you missed the live ammo and proceed to 'dry fire', the gun will go boom safely in the 'clearing barrel' with the bullet safely contained in the sand inside teh clearing barrel.

128 So always try one of these small firearms before you buy one especially if you are new to handguns. Same thing goes for light plastic stocks in rifles or even felt recoil in pistol caliber carbines (they often use a blowback mechanism to eject and load a new round) which makes felt recoil impulse heavier to the arm or shoulder than you would otherwise expect.

It's generally a 55 gal drum full of sand and propped up at an angle. You're supposed to:

1. Clear your weapon

B. Drop the hammer on an empty chamber with the weapon pointed into the barrel.

People often forget to do Step 1. Hilarity does not ensue.

At every military base overseas where everyone is armed at all times, you had to clear your weapons when re-entering the base (or a building) after a movement/patrol by removing the magazine, pulling the slide/bolt to the rear, checking the chamber to see it was really empty, dropping the slide/bolt on an empty chamber, and dry firing the trigger while pointing the muzzle at a clearing barrel (a 55 gallon drum filled with sand set in the dirt/ground) to render the weapon safe. However, not everyone followed the by-the-book procedure I described. If you forgot a step, that's when you could accidently/negligently chamber a round and shoot the clearing barrel.

Nope. Nada nichts nothing. The new magneto fires and I get spark on the plugs, and after I rebuilt the carb it gets gas in there and the fuel pump works. And even spraying starting fluid I get nothing. I was thinking with spark and starrting fluid it should at least cough. But not a thing.

Posted by: fd at April 20, 2025 08:15 PM (vFG9F)

138 Anyone know from personal experience (or studies) the effect of heavy felt recoil in an actual self-defense situation?

I have NEVER felt the recoil on a deer rifle shot, or from my 12 gauge when bird shooting. I am too focused on the shot and what is behind the target.

I don't even have any adrenaline in those situations.

Is the problem that you train less with your EDC when you have heavy (uncomfortable) felt recoil?

Personally, I would rather have a small EDC piece that I was more likely to have on me 100% of the time, than a larger caliber/heavier gun that I might leave home due to carrying discomfort, chance of exposing, etc.

Any thoughts from the actual experts?

140 I bought this old flail mower that had a Wisonsin v-twin engine on it.

Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at April 20, 2025 07:57 PM (QfvaV)

Does the Wisconsin engine have an external magneto on it? Quite common on twins and fours. Some of those may be "impulse magnetos" that aid in starting. Cranking the engine winds up a spring in the magneto, which then suddenly releases and spins the magneto armature rapidly, ensuring a powerful spark. If the magneto is gummed up or rusty inside, the impulse feature may not work, and the engine will be very hard to start.

The P365 is much better to shoot, but it is not quite like a full size.

Yessir impulse magneto. When I acquired it had the wrong magneto (one for a TF engine not a TJ) so $250 later I had a complete one from ebay vendors. It is correctly timed (cog mark in peep hole when flywheel at TDC) and the points correctly spaced - it sparks by itself and grounding the plug on the head will spark across the gap.

Posted by: coyne
======
Small guns can be as accurate as large ones regardless of your hand or arm strength, but in practice, most people (male or female) cannot fire a smaller gun more accurately than a bigger one.

Part of it is physics--like a short grip means that you have less leverage when the muzzle goes high so your recovery to back on sights is slower. Light weight does something similar.

Another issue can be a short sightline. You have a shorter sightline with a 3 inch barrel than a 5 inch pistola and yes, you have red dots, etc. nowadays that use a single sight plane but that introduces new problems in concealibility, relying on an electronic device that could fail, and so on.

I am a big burly guy that is a passable shooter of firearms before becoming riddled with arthritis but while I could shoot a steel framed snubbie quite well, I could shoot my GP-100 4 inch barrel better and faster on targets even shooting lighter 357 Magnum rounds.

Small and light has its place generally where you need a backup firearm or a well concealed one.

For the wife and daughters, I have found target ammo with the same bullet weight and muzzle velocity as their expensive self-defense rounds.

We are working on lots of practice with the really cheap ammo, a little practice with the affordable ammo that matches their self-defense ammo, and then they rarely shoot the expensive stuff to check their aim, felt recoil, etc.

-------
Go to a range, rent a small gun and a bigger one of the same mfg and style. Shoot them at speed doing something like the Bill Drill. Ceterus paribus, you will shoot the bigger gun faster and better.

Recoil makes a difference on followup shots and all handgun rounds are poor stoppers in the first place. Shorter barrels decrease the velocity needed to expand hollow points further.

Same thing goes for long arms. Try shooting your 12 gage with buckshot at multiple targets. Now repeat that using slugs. You will definitely shoot quicker and probably more accurately with the buckshot load. Very different than single shot or even two or so. Firing at humans that are moving and dodging uses more shots than most people think.

As I said, there is a reason for small and light firearms but being easy to shoot rapidly and accurately in a combat scenario is not necessarily one of them.

At one time, I carried a steel framed snubbie with +p that weighed about 22.5 oz. Due to the increase in goblins and arthritis for the last ten years, I no longer had confidence in using speedloaders fast enough to stay in a fight so moved to a 28 oz XDS in 9mm. Recoil is less than the snubbie and I carry 9+1 on board or 8+1 with an extra mag. About the same concealibility.

But, an older and heavier P6 aka P225, has about the same barrel length and add about 6 more ounces to weight. And it is easier to shoot than the XDS. Less concealable and magazines are unobtainable (no Pro Mags period).

Last, is my house gun, it is a Smith and Wesson 3rd Generation 5946 with night sights. It weighs about 40 oz with a full steel frame. Firing 9mm, even the +p feels like shooting wadcutters. Not the most concealable but not needed for home defense. About as accurate as any other police service weapon, I've fired in semi auto.

A 1911 in 9mm would be close to the same weight in steel and have likewise minuscule recoil from weight.

Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at April 20, 2025 08:39 PM (QfvaV)

But is the tag attached to the block, or to the fan shroud? Or somebody could have put a THD crank and camshaft into a TJD block. It's 80 year old farm equipment, and farmers can be frugal.

You can do this at home when dry firing. A book shelf full of paperback or hardback books can work. Some people buy old police bullet resistant vests (they deteriorate over time) for clearing at home by point the firearm at the old vest. You can now buy panels for backpacks, etc. that are bullet resistant as well to do safe clearing at home.

Don't use metal plates or hard surfaces to clear with as if it fires, then often bullets will fragment or richochet in unpleasant ways. Even good ole Mother Earth, if you point downwards into soft dirt can serve to safely clear a weapon if a bit awkward.

Posted by: whig at April 20, 2025 08:49 PM (ctrM5)

197 My Ruger LCP Custom (a short-lived model introduced after the original LCP, with *much* better (and actually usable) sights) is too small for me to shoot well. A Hogue overgrip makes it shootable. It's DA only, so I have to remember to 'roll' the trigger to get a decent grouping.

Personally, I wouldn't want .22 LR in a defensive handgun unless that's all that was available. I consider .380 ACP the minimum. You might want to look at a Glock 42 instead of a LCP, it's much more shootable.

.380 ACP is approximately 60% of a 9mm, and if you're going to fool with a G42, a P365 isn't that much bigger, but has 9mm with higher capacity.

It all depends on which variables you need/want to optimize for, and, as always, TANSTAAFL.

205 Okay you had me questioning myself so I went out to check - the engine data plated is clearly stamped TJD. It is affixed to the shroud and not the block, but the paint and patina of the whole engine, shroud and all are consistent, and consistent with the flail mower it was mounted on. I pulled it off and I think it has never been removed. I do not think it is likely that this is a swapped in TF.

Also it is possible that there are stuck valves - from the spark plug hole I can see one valve on each cylinder actuating - I can't see the other. I will see what the compresion gauge says. @AOP is there someone in our mutual orbits with your IRL email?

Oh I know. This engine should fire. I can see the fuel flow through the filter bowl (it has the original glass bowl) and I can see the sparks. Why it doesn't at least create some smoke is puzzling. I was feeling pretty optimistic about it after I got the right mag on it, and again when I got the carb rebuilt.

And still nothing.

All of what you say are good points. I've carried a 380 long ago (original pre 68 Walther PPK) but never felt secure with it as I did with the later P6 or 38 Special snubbie with +p.

But premium self defense ammo in 380 is a lot better than it was in 90's plus the PPK was picky about hollow points back then.

I would though go to Lucky Gunner Labs to determine what they said about 380 best self defense loads.

209 Daughter definitely not looking at .22 caliber for her EDC, that is just her current range weapon.

She does not like to shoot my S&W M&P 9mm with even regular loads, but that is still only a 21 oz pistol, so it is pretty light (and snappy).

She is a very new shooter, so perhaps I can eventually work her comfortably up to 9mm. However, I still think that shooting 380 with expensive defensive ammo is probably going to be her best match.

212 RI Red,

Is your LCP in 380? And that is not comfortable for you to shoot?

I have one daughter that weighs 102#. I was looking at a small 380 for her. (Right now she trains with a 22 revolver with a 6" barrel and loves that thing.)

Do you think I need to go smaller than 380 for her?
Posted by: Pillage Idiot at April 20, 2025 08:39 PM (HlyYF)

PI, I put some Hogue grips on it that made it much better. I also put pearl white fingernail polish on the sights, although the newer sights are much better.
I look at as a challenge to shoot. .380 is better than .22. Although I’m not averse to carrying .22. 10 rounds accurately placed should be effective.
But carry “all of the time” is the key. Get everyone used to it.

Glock's 380 ACP Model 42 pistol might be an excellent choice. Smith and Wesson Bodyguard II in 380 ACP is supposedly rated pretty good.

A good local range that rents guns might have one or the other as a rental (probably the Glock because that has been a popular seller for them).

Outside carry, as rare as it is for me to go into public nowadays is an owb Springfield XDS nowadays with std. pressure ammo. More concealable than a double stack as very thin in width.

I have a 6946 Smith Third Gen but magazines are expensive enough to stick with my XDS. I haven't practiced with the 6946 other than dryfiring as no range time at all due to med issues in the last several years.

I think MAE and Blaster have pretty extensive experience with them on pistols. I have used them for years on ARs but not other rifles. Personally, haven't fired shotguns enough to need them in recent years.

On shotties, a bead night sight works ok for me as my shotguns are home self defense only nowadays.

I used to be "dot all the things!" but now I have settled into a "dot things made for dots" position. As weasel might say, nothing makes up for fundamentals. After a few years of bi-weekly shooting I think that I am as accurate with iron sights as with a dot on handguns, but can acquire the shot more quickly with the dot. On PCCs (and large format pistols) definitely. For an AR depends on how you shoot.

For shotguns they are milling those receivers for dots now so in that case, yes. Whatever you do, don't do what CBD did with his. Speaking of food thread.

Curious, is it the red dot itself or is it the model you have? Back in the day, I could not pay the freight for Aimpoint or its competitor so I got a Primary Arms for my home defense AR. Worked pretty well for what I paid because I was not going grubbing in the dirt with it.

266 Military (and some cop departments) use a 55 gallon barrel up in the air that is filled with sand usually.

275 I know I've talked a lot about fitting the firearm to the person and how one that naturally 'points' for someone is the one to prefer. In my case, I only keep firearms for social occasions that 'point'. I should be able to repeat time and again raising the pistol to a natural point and being bang on with the sights. I can do that with a Springfield XD but not a Glock, with a Browning High Power, but not a Sig P238, and so on.

Where I can see red dots/etc on a handgun as very useful though is when you start getting into off kilter shooting positions and shooting while moving or perhaps at night.

It's special sand. Military specification, requires full paperwork from the original sand supplier, verification of sand composition and characteristics from the sand vendor, must be able to trace each grain back to where it was dug up, must have been stored under controlled conditions, with full lifecycle documentation, must be correct density, correct moisture content and grain size.

Symptoms are the engine does nothing. It is a hand crank start, and turn it and nothing happens. Magneto is correct, points gapped, timed with the flywheel according to procedure in the manual. at least two of the valves are moving I can see them with hte plugs out. I have a compression gauge and a borescope so I can have mroe info tomorrow.

It sparks. it sparks when it is supposed to. It doesn't do anything even with starterfluid sprayed in. Compression is the only thing left, really. The motor spins and pushes air through the valves (I can hear it and feel it) so the gauge will tell me whether its enough.
