A little history of self-assuredness in mass media

I ran across an interesting thread on X by Mike Nayna, the Australian cinematographer and writer. Timely given the Trump Administration's efforts to shake up the self-assuredness of places like Harvard and Columbia:

In 1922, a journalist by the name of Walter Lippmann published a book called Public Opinion where he explored the limitations of the liberal democratic order in the burgeoning era of mass media. 1/n

nayna prop 1.png

This was a time between the world wars when innovations in radio, the telegraph, industrial printing, & cinema were being honed as powerful tools for propagandising the masses. 2/n

He argued that the public doesn’t have direct access to objective reality due to limitations in knowledge & access to information. Instead, they rely on heavily mediated info & simplified constructs to create a distorted image of reality that he called a ‘pseudo-environment’. 3/n

Lots of people adopted his ideas, including mass murderers like Mao and self-assured westerners.

The information landscape we now inhabit is full of meticulously contrived messaging that’s distributed at mass scales to elicit pre-determined behaviours from you. The practice is so commonplace that complaining about it is like yelling at a cloud. 7/n

Throughout my time wandering the halls of many cultural institutions I’ve been struck by a consistent observation - The liberal principles around free speech & an informed public I assumed governed these institutions aren’t widely believed or practised. 8/n

Was there a time when you had similar assumptions?

Instead, a broad range of people employed by the media, arts, & academic institutions of the West are guided by a vision closer to the refined democracy that Walter Lippmann outlined in his book. 9/n

mass media charrt.jpg

The Woke have had an easy ride among the students of Lippmann.

The public these neo-Lippmannites purport to serve isn’t conceived of as rational agents able to interpret reality for themselves but as a dangerous, racist, sexist, homophobic, infectious, & polluting collection of nodes that ought to be managed into better decisions. 10/n

Sounds sort of like The Horde.

He has a Substack essay, too:

351 320 It's like machinists. Folks don't realize it's mostly CNC machines, which require the machinist be able to program them. This whole argument also ignores all the illegals currently in this country. They won't go away immediately. If this was a real issue, they would be creating guest worker programs, to get people here legally.

I saw an interesting video about Foxconn moving all its phone-building machines out of China. Truck after truck had been loaded with them for a month. The Chinese authorities were trying desperately to slow the exodus, but it was a foregone conclusion. l believe the destination was Vietnam or India.

17 Nailed it on the head about emotive journalism.

Used to be a news story would be “these events happened at this location at this time and the people involved were X and Y.”

Now that same even is reported as

“Due to the actions Of X, Y has been affected in this way. And now let’s get an opinion from an expert telling us how awful X is and how congress can create a new law to help Y.”

X is automatically the bad guy and Y is automatically the victim. And this news story is seen as objective and true by most consumers of that reporting.

Thanks. It was actually appropriate because I did turn into Cristina Amanpour last night. She had on the governor of Massachusetts.

Yes, but the information market was much more fragmented and decentralized. Every town had multiple newspapers and a reporter getting a 'scoop' wrong got fired instantly.

That persisted for a long time. Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair come to mind.

The difference now is the concentration of media and its open indifference to truth. Name a single reporter who got fired for being wrong about Trump? How can Jake Tapper still be employed after a painful defamation suit?

29 The Left have no problem in lying because they truly believe the ends justify the means.

There is no moral prohibition to lying. If you believe that information is power, then telling truth is the same as sharing power.

If you live in a world of delusion and projection, then lies, by necessity, are the vessels of communicating your world view - other wise it would be cognitive dissonance if you believe that, after you weaponized government, that Trump is weaponizing government, then saying that he isn't would be, in your mind, lying.

Those who reject God and adopt a fully materialistic and nihilistic world view do not have a conscience and what replaces morals and transcendent values is fealty to process and procedure. Its the defiance of the Rules Based Order that is the sin, not any moral violations.

Lies are the tools used to communicate procedural "values" over moral values. The left doesn't have the vocabulary to understand morality.

Depressions had come and gone before and still do as it the nature of a free market economy, swings both up and down as it should be. I've read Lippmann's book, he wasn't arguing that any of this is a good thing.

What's funny is, there's something of an update to Lippmann's thesis, and it was written by.... drumroll please...

Douglas Murray!

The book, The Madness of Crowds essentially updates Lippmann's perspective, and gives example after example of ways the public is manipulated by mass consumption of the same narrative.

It's a terrific book. Everyone should read it. Douglas would benefit from reading it, again.

I've heard it said Ho Chi Minh had never been a communist, until very late in the conflict (from their perspective, not ours), when the commies decided to fund and supply him.

Then he adopted their language. I always got the impression, after we left, Vietnam just sorta went to doing their own thing, not really caring what the commie line was.

Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at April 19, 2025 11:28 AM (a4flb)

With the Large Language Models' theory, I have come to the conclusion that it is "tokens" and that culture is actually a shared consensus of tokens.
Tokens being a mental analog for what is understood as discrete portions of reality, codified for ease of use, and of differing levels of granularity. We don't perceive reality, we assign tokenized concepts for what we perceive, so we can shuffle and mentally manipulate what we perceive to extract meaning.

Reality without context, without understanding, is just pretty lights and sounds.

For those who are going after Trump for deporting illegals, claiming this is a FUNDAMENTAL change in how the U.S. handles these cases, it was... wait for it...

Obama who put this policy into place. You could deport illegals without going to court, you just had to accuse them of being terrorists.

Now, I do think there's a problem with it, in that you COULD end up deporting the wrong guy, but of course, this guy the left is all up in arms (figuratively, mostly) about does not appear to be "the wrong guy," and frankly, those arguing the Supreme Court said Trump MUST return him are wrong. The court only said they should try.

111 Explains why the media wing of the commicrat party is so seething mad at Trump and Musk. Having convinced the feds to help squelch pesky dissenting facts on SM they had huge influence on what people thought. Then with Musk buying twitter and turning it into X, and now with DOGE limiting the federal funding for propaganda and censorship, the FNM lies are exposed more easily and quickly. I think it's accurate to say he had access to good drugs. I would suggest he had a good mind, and was a fairly deep thinker, but there were times when he was off the grid, precisely because he was physically impaired.

So when you see him in public, those are the times he was feeling better, or the meds he was on didn't affect his ability to speak.

Require all vendors who sell smartphones to provide Google-free operating systems to be installed on demand.

I think this is a tipping point. He is the president, the chief executive. As such, I would like to see prepare the way for nullification of certain court rulings in the name of his Constitutionally sacred obligations to the nation. I would like to see a careful plan assembled by his team of lawyers with outside help from distinguished Constitutional law scholars, followed by a national address, and complete with a challenge to the legislative branch to proceed with impeachment if they come to decide it is necessary.

In Mexico in the 70's when the government allowed a free press but had a monopoly on the production and sale of newsprint paper, it had both an over view of what all got printed and got to provide articles on demand. As a simple example of this - imagine taking a group of voters from say 2005. How would they vote on child sexual mutilation, importing rapists and gang members and putting them on welfare, and the semi-legalization of pedophilia?

95-5 or more against right? And while I do acknowledge our voting tallies are corrupted, I think its fair to argue 30-40% of the country now votes for the things a generation ago they not just overwhelmingly opposed but would have claimed no sane person would ever support.

You only get to that point via massive propaganda.

The more I read about A.M. Rosenthal, the executive editor from 1977-1986, the more I wish that he was able to extend his leadership over the newsroom. He was a complicated individual, but he despised the shifts into outright liberalism that the reporters were increasingly demanding, and struggled to retain some semblance of objectivity at the Times. After he left, the deluge of liberal dreck really started in earnest. Fell off a cliff after that.

The court will suggest an amount of notice required for habeas while being very vague so as to stay in their lane, maybe two or three weeks or up to 30 days will be the agreement with DOJ, and then an appearance before an Article II Immigration Judge, in Texas, to order deportation, a quick appeal, again in Article II court, that will be denied, and the big flight home, or to prison in a third country if Venezuela won't take their citizens back.

Lets see... Fed Res System created in 1913...

Depression caused by Banks crashing... 1929... just 16 years later.

2008 Economic crises... caused by banks playing with large groups of mortgages and treating them as tradeable resources... without keeping good track of who owned which mortgage... and using those as part of their bank reserves (which was fine with the Fed Res, until it wasn't).

Inflation... flat out caused by the amount of money created by banks via Fractional Lending... they literally create money, taking away the value of your money...

Sounds like we have a banking problem to me.

214 The Court is taking more power unto itself. It is a blatant power grab outside its own authority... but then... that is what happens when you have the Courts and ONLY the Courts, defining what powers they have.

Exactly so. Until they are curbed they will push as far as they can.

216 Remember that 'due process' is just the process that is due. In the illegal's case, he's had boatloads of process in the form of his prior hearings, notice, and an opportunity to be heard. The court (twice, I think) found him to be illegal and a member of a violent gang.

217 Can't say know much about Israel but the little I do read it appears what has happened to our courts taking over is what has already happened to Israel

218 Oh, and "without evidence" has been moving up quickly in the rankings.

I'm right here.

But when I say "I'm right here," people take me at my word and ignore me.

* sigh *

219 SCROTUS is trying its damnedest to make Dredd Scott relatively trivial in setting the stage for a civil war.

Next step - Trump cannot repel an invasion because the invaders were not as well organized and armed as SCROTUS deems required for a real invasion.
... wait, they just did that.

During Covid, the Supreme Court stated time and again they were AOK with taking away Natural Born Citizens Constitutional Rights, because there was a National Emergency.

Trump has already declared Illegal Immigration to be a National Emergency.

So the Courts will intervene on the behalf of those who should not even be here, but will not intervene for actual Citizens.

OK then.
