What are you gonna do if you're staying home with the kids this holiday? Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov: Russian Easter Festival Overture This 1888 overture is named for the Svetliy prazdnik or 'Bright holiday', as Easter is known in Russia. An avowed atheist, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote that he wanted to capture 'the transition from the solemnity and mystery of the evening of Passion Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious celebrations of Easter Sunday morning'. The piece paints vividly the explosion of light and colour at the end of a long, hard Russian winter. Religious and pagan themes are entwined at the very heart of the work: Rimsky-Korsakov borrowed themes from the Obikhod, a collection of Orthodox chants that since 1848 had been a mandatory part of the liturgy for every church in Russia. These austere motifs shine through the wild textures of the orchestra, no more so than at 8'35 when a solo tenor trombone ('a piena voce') evokes the chanting of a priest. The only times that Passover and Easter don't coincide closely is when the Jewish calendar has their leap month. We have to adjust our calendar with February 29th every four years too.

Wal-Mart used to be closed on Easter. They don't do that anymore. Although they don't stay open 24 hrs anymore. Open at 6am close at 11pm which is good. They really should close for Easter.
I'm old enough to remember when everything was closed on Sunday. Everything! During the week some stores and gas stations were open from 6am to 8pm. But at 8:30 pm on Saturday night the sidewalks were rolled up and only a movie theater or a bar had any business. People actually survived not being able to buy gas and soda pop at 2am. Imagine! I think Westminster Abbey did a pretty good job explaining Easter honestly My most memorable special Easter was 4 years ago… 2021 in the depths of covid I was fortunate enough to attend Easter worship at Grace Community Church, John MacArthur’s church in LA which was defying the silly state and county no gathering rules. No social distancing… lots of singing… and the best preaching. What a contrast from the year before when I had nowhere to go. I’ll never forget it. Pray for MacArthur as I believe he’s quite ill I’ll most look forward this year to the Good Friday service Posted by: LinusVanPelt at April 12, 2025 11:31 AM (6RwsA) 19

I've often wondered why Easter wasn't a bigger holiday than Christmas.
I have always wondered that as well, and aside from the obvious commercial aspects (Christmas did not used to be such a huge deal before Dickens and the big NY stores making it an event), I think the scene from Talladega Nights where the character says he prefers baby Jesus plays a part. Cute baby Jesus in a manger surrounded by animals and shepherds is a lot more appealing to the general public than Jesus triumphant rising from the grave. One is emotionally pleasing but the other has... consequences. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 12, 2025 12:13 PM (RKzci) 52

Christmas and Easter were about the only times the whole family got together.
My family got together every birthday, 4th of July, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. I grew up just assuming that's how it was: everyone knew each other and was really close, we all got along really well. We'd go to parks 2 hours away just for a picnic together and a chance to celebrate someone's birthday. I've slowly learned that far too few families do anything of the sort and sadly as that older generation passes on, the younger doesn't want anything to do with all that hassle. THE FOURTH CUP by Dr. Scott Hann explains Christ's Paschal Sacrifice on the cross as the fulfillment of the traditional fourth cup used in the celebration of the Jewish Passover ... This is the cup of the Passover that Jesus refused at the Last Supper and later consumed while hanging from the Cross ... In this 55-minute audio presentation, Dr. Hahn (a former non-Catholic theologian) explains how the Mass echoes the Passover liturgy in many ways.

The word "Easter" is in the KJV Bible, but it is a bad translation of "pascha", which is Passover.
Hard to say exactly how "Easter" became standard. There is the sun rising in the East, or a goddess "Eostre" (or "Ostara"). Then there is the vernal equinox marking an end to winter. Most of these can be interpreted as pointing to Jesus Christ being our Passover lamb, and new life for Christians. >>I would not put much confidence in Xi or anyone else in the CCP having limits on fcking with us. They may prefer a different moment, but it will be all about what they can do with minimal consequences to them.
New sheriff in town. And this one happens to love this country as much as we do. That's one thing the left has never understood. But Xi does. Posted by: JackStraw at April 12, 2025 01:40 PM (LkLld) 89

CHANGE: Matt Taibbi: Burn it all Down. Globalization, once hailed as a panacea, has proven to be fundamentally corrupt and needs to be blown to kingdom come. [link] "Everyone who follows this site knows I've always had an uncomfortable relationship with the Trump phenomenon. At the best of times, I find him puzzling and maybe dangerous, even when he's being funny or taking aim at deserving targets. Now he's president and people seem reflexively to want more criticism of him, but on this issue, what choice is there? The global economy created by both parties from the eighties onward was not only designed to be a giant predatory clusterfuck, but nearly impossible to unwind. Forget 'incrementally,' it's got to be exploded. Would more of the same and a slow death be better?" Some things can't be done incrementally. Ah, Notre Dame. I still think the Muslim work crew purposely set that fire. Too many other churches in France were torched in that time frame, never mind priests murdered.
Truly miraculous that more damage wasn't done. Taking down t he world's most famous cathedral would've been quite the feather in the Islamic kafiya. There's an absolutely stunning picture of the main altar, iirc, shining, glowing really, in the aftermath. Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at April 12, 2025 03:33 PM (Vvh2V) 94
20 The Westminster Abbey sure didn't want to intimidate anyone with a guy in clerical garb.

The photo of the stained glass reminded me of a story I heard at one of my local churches.
It seems one of the items killing churches are the stain glass windows. Not directly, but the insurance that churches must have to cover these irreplaceable windows is a major burden to so many churches. Often these windows are worth more than the rest of the property. So the full moon is today, so Easter SHOULD be tomorrow. A few hundred years ago it was determined that the official (Ecclesiastical) date of the full moon is the 17th. I love traditions!
