As an American citizen myself, and considering that these largely outdated and bankrupt élites in France had nothing legitimate to say on the subject, I asked myself this question. To take France as an example, French graduates of theThe French have actually tended to have more competent bureaucrats than we have (but competent at what?) because they are trained to be good bureaucrats and have been tested in a meritocratic system. But they mostly all think alike: 1. Trump is the antithesis of their mental software 2. The French state, over-administered, is slow, procedural, and inflexible. There are others in France who warn that the French should prepare for an expanding U.S. economy. Several examples are presented in the piece linked above. France followed up Rousseau with postmodernism which is at the heart of our current socialist infestation - Derida, Foucault, etc. Yeah, the French have a lot to answer for. A guy pulls into a gas station. The attendant pumps his gas and looks into the back seat of the car. He sees a penguin sitting there. The attendant comes around to the driver’s window and says, “Did you know you have a penguin in the back seat of your car?” The driver says No and turns around and looks. He sees the penguin and asks the attendant, “What do you think I should do with him?” The attendant says, “If I were you, I would take him to the zoo.” “Good idea,” the driver says, and drives away. A couple days later the driver pulls into the same gas station. The attendant pumps his gas and looks in the back seat, and there is the penguin. The attendant comes around to the driver’s side and says, “Hey, that penguin is still in the back seat.” The driver says, “I know.” The attendant says, “I thought you were going to take him to the zoo.” The driver says: “I did, and we had so much fun, today I’m taking him to the beach.” ![]() ![]() 204 They're building an LA to Vegas line now, which will be the real test. I do not think Trump values might over law. He works within the constraints of the law and respects law more than just about anyone else in power. His opponents are quick to dispense with law whenever it obstructs their plans, i.e., they play Calvinball.
But Trump leverages anything he can to achieve his aims, including law, and he will not let fake Calvinball rules stand in his way. I think what his opponents are seeing is persistence in the face of their obstruction. They don't understand that approach. The French, like their fellow Europeans, dislike Trump mainly because he sees though their technobabble/ideobabble, nonsense and hits straight at the core of the issues.
And if there's one thing a technocrat hates it's getting to the core of an issue to solve a problem, without their input and approval. Because: #1 If you actually solve the problem they'll be out of job. #2 How can this uncouth, ruthlessly individualist, American dumbass know more than me, be better at things, then me, the highly-educated, cosmopolitan, humble civil servant? Impossible! Sacre bleu! Not only are all French ideas are bad, but so are German ideas. This is the main reason they hate each other so much. elite who still believe that legitimacy comes from education and abstract reasoning.
This is Progressivism. For the French it goes back before Marx, to the time of the Revolution. It's why they wanted to throw out measurements based primarily on the human body (self-referencing) and make them based on some strict outside, "natural" standard* (starting with the kilometer as a measure from the earth's circumference). The goal was to destroy Christianity once and for all (or to 'evolve' away from it) and to make human "reason" into God. (BTW, this has always been a more Parisian thing than a French thing.) All of that (from the Revolution) gets picked up by Marx and made even worse, becoming ultimately communism. And, Progressivism here in America. (* Ironic, IMO, that the French measurement folks decided "decimal" was so important to the system, as the ease of using that is based entirely on our having 10 fingers and 10 toes. And ignored reason, which finds it much easier to do things in halves and thirds than decimals.) Posted by: GWB at April 05, 2025 11:49 AM (XR+2F) 78

Now do Ukraine. Our bipartisan foreign policy elites have been pedaling this bullshit for years. We've been bullied into supporting war after war, expansion after expansion for no reason other than to enrich the ruling class at the expense of the American people. Nobody can give a good reason for why we have spent $200 billion in Ukraine because there isn't a good reason. Nobody can tell you why hollowing out our manufacturing base for cheap shit from China is a good thing because it isn't. We are a country with an economy. The elite no longer believe that. It's not just the French. That's how the American "elite" think too. Our system...Ivy Leagues, war colleges...is sloppily and less honest than the ENA system but it produces roughly the same kind of creature. Trump is anathema to their entire worldview. And those institutions don't teach or encourage broadmindedness and the ability to recognize, if not credit, alternative approaches to politics and conflict resolution. It's a sealed, protected intellectual system. They can't understand Trump, they can't deal with him, and like all humans when faced with something they can't understand or deal with, they'll sooner or later resort to violence.

I read about an example of this earlier - if you import any tropical product into the EU (tropical hardwood, tropical plants, tropical whatever), you have to provide a certificate certifying that the area that you took your tropical product from has not been clearcut in the last five years. Multiply this by 10,000, and you get a sense of how much bureaucratic red tape there is producing anything in the EU. Posted by: The ARC of History! at April 05, 2025 12:00 PM (xTIDn) 99

No, this is different. Trump isn't just throwing tariffs on countries to even the stakes in the current trade environment. He's tearing it up and changing how the game is played. The Trump administration has already taken in $5 trillion in foreign investment. Biden got about $1 trillion in 4 years. Trump is not tariffing foreign countries if they make their products here. He's ending foreign wars and all the multi-culti bullshit and focusing on strengthening the American worker. When Trump first ran in 2016 the Republican Party hated him almost as much as the left. Now he is the Republican Party and it doesn't resemble the Republican Party of the Bushes at all. He's taking a chainsaw to the bureaucracy and every other corrupt institution in government. I would like to see all the women refuse to compete. That would stop this foolishness.
So far the left has won by working this way - complain and they destroy you. This woman isn't just kicked out of fencing, which she probably dedicated her life to, she's also going to find it hard to find a corporate job, and if she lives in a blue area ANY job. And they'll do the same to the second woman that fights back. The obvious answer is some sort of collective action right? Oh but not only will they destroy the first woman to do that, they'll find an excuse to have her arrested. Posted by: 18-1 at April 05, 2025 12:23 PM (t0Rmr) 165

I spent some time in Europe when I was a younger lad. Worker and lived there on and off for a few years.
They do not understand Americans. They get their knowledge from movies and the BBC. Every silly stereotype is what they think is reality. It’s the equivalent of us thinking everyone in France walks around with a beret and baguette all day long. And then the ones who travel here are shocked to learn it’s all bullshit. But they still can’t let go of it. And another thing is they cannot comprehend how big US is. remember this so visibly, discussing driving distances. I was like yeah I’ll drive 5 hours each way for a weekend. That’s unfathomable to the average European. Because 5 hours is driving 1/2 way cross country for them or in some cases the entire country. Whereas for us it’s maybe a couple of states, more of them than not, not even leaving our state. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 05, 2025 12:24 PM (4La0r) 175

Its not just the Frenchies. Its all of Europe. They can't understand someone who doesn't have the right pedigree. I posted this in the coffee clubhouse....
These countries put enormous tariffs on American goods along with onerous regulations and restrictions but expect us to just let them send their crap here free of charge. They expect us to bend over and take it. Trump says nope! You want in our markets you will allow us in yours. You won't just bend over for us, you will kneel and open wide. Europe is still smarting from the fact that we saved/kicked their asses twice. They want daddy to protect them but can't forgive him for making them admit that they're weak and stupid and need his protection. The tariffs and NATO are pissing them off because they know it means they are surrendering to daddy again. And daddy is a big orange bastard that doesn't have the right pedigree. The “free” health care govt provides to counties is a tariff on a sense. If a US company has to pay $10k a year per employee while an EU company doesn’t that’s a huge competitive advantage. It has the same effect as a tariff on US good that corresponds to the cost of that $10k per employee.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 05, 2025 12:13 PM I don't think a US company "has to" pay $10k a year per employee for health insurance. Most, if not all, of them do in order to attract the best talent to their company. If I remember correctly, US companies started these benefits -- paid healthcare, 401(k), etc. -- in order to attract the best people to work there. But they are under no obligation to do so. But American working public is so used to that now being the norm, that if a company does not offer it, they will not be competitive with those who do. Then of course there are the companies who don't give a shit anymore, like Stellantis, who just fire all their local engineers and transition to 75% of their workforce as contract workers and remote BCC (Best Cost Country) cheap labor workers in India and Mexico, none of whom receive benefits from Stellantis. They found out when the IRS agents called up and said: ‘You guys have this free program in your family, did you know you have it?’” - Fun fact: Almost the entire selling point for Obamacare was the "uninsured, can't get coverage because of preexisting conditions" talking point. When the law was pushed through over Christmas and the window of time opened for those "uninsured, can't get coverage because of prexisting conditions" Americans to sign up for coverage, 107K people enrolled. When I was a kid in kindergarten and my dad was fresh out of the military after serving his commitment that helped pay his way through college, he and my stay at home mom bought a 3 bedroom house in a suburb of NYC with a garage for the family car. He had an entry level sales job with IBM and that supported a family of 4 in a very average middle class lifestyle. This was the norm. Even accounting for inflation that doesn't happen today. I know young people in their 30s who think the idea of home ownership will always be out of their reach even though both husband and wife are working. I'm so old I remember when Nixon was president and opening China to trade. And both parties have been on this train ever since. That's what makes Trump different. My son turned30 in February. He's married and just a week ago their first child was born. They are in the process of putting a manufactured home next door to us. He has gamed out the finances down to the dime. He figures they can handle their financial responsibility on just his salary so if his lady decides to stay home with the little full time they can afford it. If she wants to maybe work part time it would make some extra walking around money for them but they would have to pay a babysitter (me). These kids are making smart decisions based on existing facts not on maybe this or maybe that. I don't see that with a lot of people their age.

- Did your dad buy $7 coffee every morning? Did he DoorDash dinner every night? ... -- The trick is recognizing that they're connected. Lately there have been some interesting discussions noting that in the 60s we got abortion and not too long after that no-fault divorce, and - similar to how the workplace doubled and halved wages - this allowed corporations to sell twice the stuff. Two times the homes, two times the apartments, two times the cars, food, TVs, etc. The "freedom" didn't have anything to do with freedom, but almost everything to do with corporatism. Move forward a bit. Children are raised in homes by single women with innately worse financial ability. This isn't "you're a h8r" nonsense. This is data. Women are worse with money. And they've raised 50 years of children to be worse with money. And we're seeing it now with your doordash and other examples. Family is and always has been key. It was actually a luxury house because it had a one-car garage, and we were a small family. One of the neighbors had the same house, but 11 kids. They turned the garage into a bunkhouse. Nobody thought any of that was weird. We did move into bigger digs when I was a teenager, after saving up the money to do so. It ain't rocket surgery. — Yes! This is never discussed when people talk about “the housing crisis”. In 1970 the median home size was 1500 sq ft. And that was when the median family size was much bigger than it is today. Was pretty common for siblings to share a bedroom. Today that would be child abuse. Brooklyn not only needs her own room but also her own bathroom and a playroom. While AWFL mom needs a craft room and dad needs a man cave. With of course an 4 car garage. Anything less than 4000 so ft is off the table. More demand = higher price In my town the population doubled in 20 years. The number of houses/apartments did not. So the prices went up. This is Econ 101 stuff. Want to stop the price increases? End immigration. The alternative is that prices will continue to skyrocket and more and more people won't be able to afford anything better then a tenement. If you got a raise back in the day, it would actually amount to a pay cut because all of your money got taxed at the higher rate. __________________________ I travel quite a bit to the UK (and periodically Aus.) for work, and my line of work has me bumping into conservatives there (as conservative as they are allowed) sporadically. And, remarkably, they eventually bring up the true factor that scares them about their own country. The Common Law basis of their entire legal and govt. system doesn't have the same safeguards that we find in our Bill of Rights. And, granted, our Constitution is abused, and our Bill of Rights constantly under "legal" review. But, it's a safety net that rationalizes a defense of those pieces of paper. In the UK and Aus. they don't have that fundamental starting point to be able to stand up and say..."FU, I'll say and think whatever I want to say and think." Those smart enough to understand in the EU and Aus...realize just how more beneficial to the people our form of government happens to be. They're getting examples locally and a daily basis. For a number of years I did the same international traveling. I know work with an Aussie who I was originally introduced to by a mutual friend in the UK. We've often spoken about the differences between those who adopted the British norms and those, us basically, who rejected much of it. Nowhere was it more apart than during the virus. French fries. Duh.
Seriously, though, there are some interesting things about French food simply because it's such an old place. There's a regional soup that can't be made anywhere else because step one is to go scoop up a bunch of stuff out of the water from under the dock. Those particular creatures don't live anywhere else in that combination in France, much less in Europe, and certainly not in America. So you can buy something that is named that soup in French restaurants in America, but it's not and never can be. It can only be that soup if you're eating it in this particular province, similar to Champagne. There's no legal regulations on the soup so far as I know, though. I remember telling that penguin joke in 1981, only it went like this:
A man sees a refrigerator truck stranded by the side of the road. The driver is madly waving him down, so he pulls over and asks what the problem is. "I've got a penguin in here that's supposed to go to Sea World, but the truck has broken down. Do you think you could transport him for me?" The guy says "Sure, I'm headed that way anyway." He loads the penguin into his car and heads south. Three hours later he's still waiting for the tow truck, when he sees the guy coming back - and the penguin is still in the car. He waves him down a second time. "I thought you were taking the penguin to Sea World!" he exclaimed. "I did, and we had such a good time that now we're going to Disneyland." My favorite penguin joke involves the penguin needing some repairs on his car. The mechanic tells him it will be a while, so the penguin goes to the ice cream shop next door to get a snack. He come back and the mechanic tells him "it looks like you blew a seal". The penguin quickly wipes his mouth and in total embarrassment says "No! No! I just had an ice cream next door!"
