French Elites are extra confused by President Trump
Why does Trump bother the elites in France and in Europe so much? As an American citizen myself, and considering that these largely outdated and bankrupt élites in France had nothing legitimate to say on the subject, I asked myself this question. To take France as an example, French graduates of theThe French have actually tended to have more competent bureaucrats than we have (but competent at what?) because they are trained to be good bureaucrats and have been tested in a meritocratic system. But they mostly all think alike:
École Nationale d'Administration (l'ENA) have feared Trump since his re-election:
1. Trump is the antithesis of their mental software
ENA graduates are trained in
technocracy, norms, collective thinking, and risk avoidance. Trump embodies:
• Absolute individual will,
• Action without safety nets,
• Personal judgment above consensus,
• A logic of brutal disruption. Whether you like that or not, they fear him because they can
neither anticipate nor decode his policies. It eludes their map of power.
2. The French state, over-administered, is slow, procedural, and inflexible. Trump, for his part, acts like a pure capitalist actor:
• He redefines the framework (NATO, WTO, various trade agreements, etc. )

3. Trump shatters their illusion of a multilateral world The ENA graduates live in the De Gaulle-Mitterrand legacy ofHeard recently about a very short-term deployment of a small French military unit in the Middle East. I think they helped locals vaccinate goats or something. It seemed more symbolic than a projection of power.

4. He speaks to the people – not the elites The ENA graduates have rarely boots on the ground,

I think it is more accurate to say that he values reality of ideals. I haven't ever seen him take an action that he didn't believe he was legally authorized to make, unlike some other Presidents I could mention.

I do not think Trump values might over law. He works within the constraints of the law and respects law more than just about anyone else in power. His opponents are quick to dispense with law whenever it obstructs their plans, i.e., they play Calvinball.
But Trump leverages anything he can to achieve his aims, including law, and he will not let fake Calvinball rules stand in his way.
I think what his opponents are seeing is persistence in the face of their obstruction. They don't understand that approach.

Our system...Ivy Leagues, war colleges...is sloppily and less honest than the ENA system but it produces roughly the same kind of creature. Trump is anathema to their entire worldview. And those institutions don't teach or encourage broadmindedness and the ability to recognize, if not credit, alternative approaches to politics and conflict resolution. It's a sealed, protected intellectual system. The “free” health care govt provides to counties is a tariff on a sense. If a US company has to pay $10k a year per employee while an EU company doesn’t that’s a huge competitive advantage. It has the same effect as a tariff on US good that corresponds to the cost of that $10k per employee.

I would like to see all the women refuse to compete. That would stop this foolishness.
So far the left has won by working this way - complain and they destroy you. This woman isn't just kicked out of fencing, which she probably dedicated her life to, she's also going to find it hard to find a corporate job, and if she lives in a blue area ANY job.
And they'll do the same to the second woman that fights back.

They do not understand Americans. They get their knowledge from movies and the BBC. Every silly stereotype is what they think is reality. It’s the equivalent of us thinking everyone in France walks around with a beret and baguette all day long.
And then the ones who travel here are shocked to learn it’s all bullshit. But they still can’t let go of it.
And another thing is they cannot comprehend how big US is. remember this so visibly, discussing driving distances. I was like yeah I’ll drive 5 hours each way for a weekend. That’s unfathomable to the average European. Because 5 hours is driving 1/2 way cross country for them or in some cases the entire country. Whereas for us it’s maybe a couple of states, more of them than not, not even leaving our state.

The “free” health care govt provides to counties is a tariff on a sense. If a US company has to pay $10k a year per employee while an EU company doesn’t that’s a huge competitive advantage. It has the same effect as a tariff on US good that corresponds to the cost of that $10k per employee.

I don't think a US company "has to" pay $10k a year per employee for health insurance. Most, if not all, of them do in order to attract the best talent to their company. If I remember correctly, US companies started these benefits -- paid healthcare, 401(k), etc. -- in order to attract the best people to work there. But they are under no obligation to do so. But American working public is so used to that now being the norm, that if a company does not offer it, they will not be competitive with those who do.
Then of course there are the companies who don't give a shit anymore, like Stellantis, who just fire all their local engineers and transition to 75% of their workforce as contract workers and remote BCC (Best Cost Country) cheap labor workers in India and Mexico, none of whom receive benefits from Stellantis.

I had an ‘04 9-3 and that was still a fun car. Quality was not much to write home about. The dashboard looked like nothing else at the time. Ignition in the center console a Saab thing was also great. It definitely felt different than everything else at the time which was Saab’s thing.

When the law was pushed through over Christmas and the window of time opened for those "uninsured, can't get coverage because of prexisting conditions" Americans to sign up for coverage, 107K people enrolled.

My son turned30 in February. He's married and just a week ago their first child was born. They are in the process of putting a manufactured home next door to us. He has gamed out the finances down to the dime. He figures they can handle their financial responsibility on just his salary so if his lady decides to stay home with the little full time they can afford it. If she wants to maybe work part time it would make some extra walking around money for them but they would have to pay a babysitter (me). These kids are making smart decisions based on existing facts not on maybe this or maybe that. I don't see that with a lot of people their age.

A couple with no kids needs 3000+ sq ft for all of their crap.
Then consider that people buy perfectly fine houses with functional—if dated—interiors and gut them and spend $150k on remodeling, only to try to “flip” the house a few years later.
Cheap housing still exists, but people demand much more, then are surprised they can’t afford it. Add in the fact that your 30-somethings are renting a “luxury” apt in a city for $3200 /month instead of saving for a house.

Even accounting for inflation that doesn't happen today. I know young people in their 30s who think the idea of home ownership will always be out of their reach even though both husband and wife are working.

Two times the homes, two times the apartments, two times the cars, food, TVs, etc. The "freedom" didn't have anything to do with freedom, but almost everything to do with corporatism.
Move forward a bit. Children are raised in homes by single women with innately worse financial ability. This isn't "you're a h8r" nonsense. This is data. Women are worse with money. And they've raised 50 years of children to be worse with money. And we're seeing it now with your doordash and other examples.
Family is and always has been key.

It was actually a luxury house because it had a one-car garage, and we were a small family. One of the neighbors had the same house, but 11 kids. They turned the garage into a bunkhouse. Nobody thought any of that was weird.

Once the boy left home, we sold the four bedroom place in town and moved to the boonies into an almost-one bedroom house. It has outbuildings, but the house itself is very small. I got tired of cleaning three toilets every week, not to mention the floors. Now I can spend about an hour and have a clean house, depending on the status of shedding season. I spend the rest of the time in the garden or reading or knitting. Much better.

I travel quite a bit to the UK (and periodically Aus.) for work, and my line of work has me bumping into conservatives there (as conservative as they are allowed) sporadically. And, remarkably, they eventually bring up the true factor that scares them about their own country. The Common Law basis of their entire legal and govt. system doesn't have the same safeguards that we find in our Bill of Rights. And, granted, our Constitution is abused, and our Bill of Rights constantly under "legal" review. But, it's a safety net that rationalizes a defense of those pieces of paper.

I travel quite a bit to the UK (and periodically Aus.) for work, and my line of work has me bumping into conservatives there (as conservative as they are allowed) sporadically. And, remarkably, they eventually bring up the true factor that scares them about their own country. The Common Law basis of their entire legal and govt. system doesn't have the same safeguards that we find in our Bill of Rights. And, granted, our Constitution is abused, and our Bill of Rights constantly under "legal" review. But, it's a safety net that rationalizes a defense of those pieces of paper.

One thing that always amused me about the Europeans is that they call us "cowboys," meaning that as an insult. Little do they grasp that Americans take that as a compliment.

For a number of years I did the same international traveling. I know work with an Aussie who I was originally introduced to by a mutual friend in the UK.

My favorite penguin joke involves the penguin needing some repairs on his car. The mechanic tells him it will be a while, so the penguin goes to the ice cream shop next door to get a snack.
