Uh Oh! A two-parter! At least there is no math!

What is that? That is a electric switch panel. Nice and simple, although why two of them are next to each other and one is larger is a question best left to French engineers, whose idea of efficiency is based on the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a cube.

Maybe the larger one controls both lights (nope)? Maybe it controls the power socket about two feet away (nope)? Maybe it is an extra switch for future lighting needs? Sure, maybe. I don't know. It's France...who can guess why they do things.

And here we have a three-part socket under a desk. Two power outlets, and one internet cable that is unused. It's about 25 feet from the aforementioned switch panel, and hopefully it is becoming obvious what the hell is going on here!

Yup! The large switch controls the right-side power plug. The one into which I had my monitor plugged. And since this is a new place and we were figuring out which switches did what, the monitor mysteriously turned off and on. But it wasn't obvious, because A. no line of sight between the switch and the monitor, and 2) the monitor wasn't always on.

The first electrician couldn't figure it out. The second one did!

I read your essay. Interesting and harrowing. You touched on faith near the end and I think that's really the decisive point. In a world where religion is mocked and marginalized, we lose a vital source of comfort but also reality that can keep us grounded.

There is always a "correct" way to perform an installation. If the worker only had one of the large switches in his truck, then it is much easier to install the double switch into the junction cover than drive back to the shop.

Much better to take off work early and head to the home of your mistress and check off the box that says you completed the required task.

I don't know what gives with the Brits, whether they have that attitude too or how the money flows, but I knew a crew of Yankees who went to London for a year-long gig, had decent wages and lived in nice apartments that ALL had problems, and they could never get a plumber or carpenter or whatever to show up sooner than 2 weeks and make the fix without 4 fails over a period of 3 months. Some of the Yanks gave up and just lived without one of the toilets working or whatever.

There is always a "correct" way to perform an installation. If the worker only had one of the large switches in his truck, then it is much easier to install the double switch into the junction cover than drive back to the shop.

Much better to take off work early and head to the home of your mistress and check off the box that says you completed the required task.

This was discussed during construction.
We had a men's room with one WC. Because of geometry whatever the stall was ten feet deep. Of course thet put the door the usual couple of feet in front of the WC instead of seven feet... The one motion sensor was around the corner.
We figured the users would figure it out eventially and bring two spare rolls of TP in case they cannot make that bank shot on the first toss to trip the sensor.

I was emptying out a closet and found the key shoved into a can of moth crystals. Also found a hundred-dollar bill stuffed into a shirt pocket, presumably for an emergency.

A woman of some infamy also left a monogrammed leather briefcase full of letters, papers, documents, all handwritten and original, in a secret hidey-hole in an old home. A subsequent owner found them, gave them to a friend who was kind of interested in writing, and the friend wrote a book which became a regional bestseller.

Good thing there are many #s. The old vpn would hit bad every day or so the new one has more #s. How do they do that?
