In western liberal democracies jailing or shooting the opposition candidate is quickly becoming the preferred election strategy

CNN claims she's just a "figurehead" so this isn't an attack on democracy, you see.

French far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen has been banned from running for political office for five years after being found guilty of embezzling European Union funds, in a politically explosive ruling that has shattered her hopes of winning the presidency in 2027.
A Paris court also handed Le Pen, who was the frontrunner for the next election, a four-year prison sentence with two years suspended, to be served under house arrest, and a 100,000 Euro ($108,000) fine. Le Pen will file an appeal, her lawyer said.

The imprisonment is on hold. The thing they really wanted- - banning her from running -- is imposed immediately, even during her appeal.

Europe is a totalitarian hellhole and we should no longer spend a dime defending it.

Her party, National Rally (RN), was ordered to pay 2 million Euros in fines for the 4.1 million Euros that it was accused of embezzling.
The court's presiding judge, Bénédicte de Perthuis, said Le Pen's actions amounted to a "serious and lasting attack on the rules of democratic life in Europe, but especially in France." She said Le Pen's immediate ban on standing for office was tied to "democratic public unrest" that would result from the election of a person convicted of embezzlement.
But the decision itself looks set to spark significant unrest. Jordan Bardella, Le Pen's protégé who succeeded her as RN's president, said it was not only Le Pen "who is being unjustly condemned: it is French democracy that is being executed."
Marion Maréchal, Le Pen's niece and a Member of the European Parliament for a rival far-right party, said her aunt had "led our side on the path to victory. This is her only guilt, and that is why she is condemned."
Calm and composed as she entered the court on Monday, greeting supporters, Le Pen grew increasingly agitated, shaking her head as the court president spent more than an hour detailing the embezzlement scheme.
"The question therefore arises in a singular way in this criminal case which makes its decision 'in the name of the French people.' The court must not ignore the requirement to seek a social consensus," the presiding judge said.
De Perthuis said her fellow judges had weighed the "two risks" in their sentencing: the risk of a person convicted for embezzlement being elected for political office and the "major risk to public order" if a likely presidential candidate was banned from running.

Le Pen had branded the case against her a "witchhunt," mirroring language that US President Donald Trump used against legal proceedings that targeted him.
Her right-wing European allies also quickly rallied to her defense after the decision.
"Je suis Marine," Viktor Orban, Hungary's prime minister and a champion of socially conservative politics in Europe, posted on X following the conviction, with Italian far-right leader and Matteo Salvini slamming the decision.

I think the only way to "force" America into a fight with Russia is to get Ukraine added to NATO.

NATO powers attacking another country doesn't initiate Article V (otherwise, Iraq would have been a NATO action). NATO soldiers being shot at and even killed in non-NATO countries doesn't initiate Article V (Article VI is explicit in that).

It is not unfortunate because they have become lords of misrule rather than judges based on law. Quite a few royal judges in France during their Revolution ended up headless because they viewed their jobs as royal sinecures instead of basing their rulings on the law. Their English judicial brethren did the opposite by often checking the king and his related influence peddler courtiers.

More, all the Power that Judges are supposedly using to over ride the President on Policy matters, come from the Rules of Civil Procedure, which is written by the Supreme Court... Congress delegated them that authority in 1934.

But, under Chevron... the Courts can't use rules or regulations that are not stipulated and empowered, by law... ergo, the Supremes themselves, giving the ability to do Contempt of Court and TRO powers to lower Courts, have broken their own Precedent under Chevron, as there IS NO specific law giving this power to the Courts.

This is an example of why Breitbart's maxim that politics is downstream culture always seemed questionable to me.

There were strong majorities against gay marriage almost everywhere, even in leftwing areas. Then the left rammed it through illegally and that opposition disappeared.

For a non-trivial number of people what is good and right is determined by what the government endorses. So contrary to the maxim if you change the laws the culture will change.

IIRC, there used to be a limit on consecutive terms as President so Putin couldn't run in 2008. Instead, he held some other office and, during that time, it held all the power. In 2012 Putin ran for President again and they removed the rule regard consecutive terms.

Yeah, I've seen stuff about Putin being less of a hardliner than the alternatives but a lot of it seems like speculation.

Absolutely. I think a big flaw in my thinking on the subject was projecting my own motivations on to politicians / "leaders" / whatever.

For example, thinking their decisions had to do with things like ideology and making a positive impact on the world and trying to give back to the country / community and all of that. Maybe they're misguided, but their intentions are good.

Then during COVID, I realized -- oh, right, they don't give a shit about any of that stuff. It's all about personal money and power. They don't give two shits about America. When this country starts to crack around the edges, they'll up and move to Europe or Thailand or whatever. Once I realized that, then everything they do came in to focus.

I installed OpenVPN on it as the sole external entry point to my network.

I installed No-IP updater on it so I could use a dynamic DNS service because I don't want to pay for a fixed IP.

I set up OpenVPN so it only takes cert logins, no passwords. I setup Fail2Ban so anyone who tries to login gets insta-blocked.

I setup Nextcloud so I can access files from my server from anywhere. It's kind of like a self hosted OneDrive. Nextcloud is only accessible if I'm on the local network or through the VPN.

So far everything is working well.

Exactly. I think people are missing the big picture here. Yes, obviously, there is a massive, mind blowing amount of corruption in DC. On that, we can all agree.

But USAID was spending taxpayer dollars to actively go against the interests of the American middle class and were actively doing the opposite of what our elected leaders claimed the government was doing. For example, they were funding the mass influx of immigrants in the last 10-20 years.

Also, USAID is a CIA slush fund.

So in essence, the CIA has been running a color revolution operation against this country. Probably for decades.

That should be the real story we're all focused on. People should be in prison for that. Forget the corruption for now.

That certainly played a role.

But I think (and I might be being naive here), that most of the robber barons truly thought of themselves as Americans and that their role in life was to help their fellow citizens.

I know Henry Ford is a bit controversial now, but he actually spoke / wrote a lot about this subject and how being ultra wealthy was a responsibility. Some of that was marketing, I'm sure, but I think he also truly believed in "giving back" to his fellow Americans.

I don't think our current class of CEO's / tech bros / whatever feel that way at all.

All of those injunctions, etc. come from Equity Courts. These were first ecclesiastical in nature but their ability to fix problems created by the common law reliance on precedent and ability not to have to wait for the injustice to occur but stop it in its progress are some of Equity features.

All of this existed before the Founding and are part of the judicial power of the US--e.g. the power to run their own show.

The problem is not the power per se but the use of it. Just like the US Congress has the spending and taxing powers that are subject to abuse (aka Obamacare for example) and the President has the power to hire and fire that could be used to hire only cronies to staff government.

What will inevitably happen in the case of multiple district courts is some will be dismissed by appellate courts, others will go to Scotus, and all of those decisions risk that the other players--executive and legislature along with the people don't want ignoring judicial orders.

Depends on the issue. You cannot murder an illegal for example and an illegal being prosecuted for murdering someone else still gets std. constitutional protections as if they were a citizen.

On staying here, the question is how much procedure do they get. Under law including Scotus case law, foreign (alien) enemies defined by the executive get deported period. Any procedure offered is purely minimal as in using dossiers rather than court proceedings to separate the sheep from the goats. Outside that act, defined by existing immigration law.

Because I have to say, that's not the system of laws I live under. If I forget to renew my car registration, the cops aren't reasonable. I get a ticket.

I'm with you on this one. However, we've already had a test case regarding how to handle legal disputes regarding violent non-citizens: Gitmo. White-shoe lawyers (Eric Holder among them) couldn't wait to represent terrorist non-citizens against the USA. Scotus overreach in that particular case based on misreading old historical habeas cases (Hamdan v. Rumsfeld). The problem was that Bush brought them into US held territory by bad legal advice instead of keeping them abroad.

In two companion cases where one guy was held in Iraqi prison and others held at Bagram AB in Afghanistan, Scotus punted as neither were considered American in sovereignty so no judicial oversight.

The investigation has largely been initiated and completed.

A bunch of administration officials were communicating on an approved app, somebody inadvertently added someone to the conversation that shouldn't have been on that conversation, the person who shouldn't have been on the conversation leaked the contents of the conversation to the public.

The only thing left is conclusions and corrective actions.

My conclusion is Mike Walz is a rat and the fact that the government does not have a mobile communication platform for it's high level officials to communicate on with user authentication and security and instead relies on consumer social media apps, is beyond ridiculous.

That would not be Mexico. It would have to be a neighbor of Venezuela, not the US. The only applicants for asylum that could apply for here would be Mexicans and Canadians. Or maybe Russians with an ocean border?

Tariff issue has to be forced now--hurts the investor class somewhat, consumers very little so far when inflation is abating, and hurts foreign lands a lot. Most recalibrations of markets occur in the relative short run as in months rather than years which is why Congress with its antidiluvian economics always does the right thing too late and the wrong thing at the wrong time when trying to regulate.

In most cases, if you are not an expert in public opinion surveys and relying on media reports, please drop the cherry picking of dimly understood data and simply posit your own reactions.

I've done public opinion research as in polling plus had the grad classes, etc. for it, had friends who are professional pollsters, etc. That being said, I rarely comment anymore about polling as simply few, if any people, look at its empirical underpinnings but jump to the part that confirms whatever opinion makers put in their head at the time.

It takes deep understanding to read polling and by the time you understand what one poll says, you are six months down the road in real time and often you find out those results were worthless in hindsight. But, it does allows one to chatter about shit.
